A revised departmental code is attached. This revision was

approved by the faculty of the Department on August 24, 1981.

Significant changes are as follows:

Section I was rewritten to include objectives developed during

preparation of the Department's Task Force Report. The section
on duties of the Director of Graduate Studies was modified to
correspond to changes in objectives,

The code now permits the designation of a Director of Under-
graduate Studies, whose duties parallel those of the
Director of Graduate Studies.

The revised code adds an alternate to the Executive Committee,
which also functions as a personnel committee. The Chairperson

no longer serves as chair of the Executive Committee during
consideration of personnel matters,

An ambiguous paragraph referring to the forwarding of personnel
recommendations has been eliminated,

The revised code provides for staggered terms for members of
the Executive Committee and other standing committees.
