EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY Ey GREENVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA 27834 BOARD OF TRUSTEES September 28, 1981 Memorandum TO: All Faculty Members Received civ: neha eae. OP SEP 2 9 1981 Chairman, Board of Trustees SUBJECT: At-large Faculty Nominations to serve FACULTY SENATE on the Chancellor Selection Committee As you are aware, Board of Governors policy delegates to the Board of Trustees the responsibility to establish a Chancellor Selection Committee with representation from the Board, faculty, Alumni and student body. This is a sound process because it recognizes that each institution has unique needs and programs. Therefore, nom- inations originate from those close to the university and its mission. Within this framework, I will make every effort to see that we appoint a selection committee which is representative of the various interests of the university family. Faculty representation will be vital to the success of the process. In this regard I have asked the Faculty Senate to nominate persons to fill three positions on the Committee. I will appoint one faculty member from at-large nominations. It is my belief that each individual faculty member should be afforded the Opportunity to make direct nominations and recommendations for faculty membership on the Selection Committee. Also, I will appreciate nominations from any faculty organization or unit on the campus. Therefore, I solicit the help of each of you wishing to make a nomination for membership on the committee. Please forward your nomination to the Executive Secretary of the Chancellor Selection Committee, Willis Building, by October 5, 1981. In submitting your nomination, please include a curriculum vitae or other information which summarizes the nominee's qualifications and shows the strength the appointment would bring to the committee. I am confident that the university family will establish a committee fully capable of meeting the challenge of conducting a successful selection process. When the Selection Committee completes its task a recommendation will be made to the full Board of Trustees. After approval by the Board, two candidates will be submitted to President William C. Friday. The President will then make a recommendation to the Board of Governors, and upon their approval the next chancellor will be named. You have my gratitude for your support in this major task and for the many ways in which you provide strength to the University. /al EB cc: Board of Trustees East Carolina University is a constituent institution of The University of North Carolina An Equal Opportunity /Aftirmative Action Employer Recei ceived EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY SEP 2 8 1981 GREENVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA 27834 eB BEAGUL Tir SENATEF Es September 28, 1981 Dr. Thomas Johnson, Chairman Faculty Senate East Carolina University Greenville, N. C. 27834 Dear Tom: It is my intention to establish a Chancellor Selection Committee which represents the fullest possible range of university interests and constituencies. Policy outlined by the UNC Board of Governors stipulates that the Committee wil] be composed of representatives from the Board of Trustees, faculty, Alumni and student body. Faculty input and representation are especially essential for the selection process to succeed. I will be grateful if the Senate will nominate three faculty members to serve on the Committee. Please provide the recommendations to me by October 6, 1981. It will be helpful if the nominations are accompanied by a letter which states the qualities and strengths nominees would bring to the Selection Committee. The Trustees and entire university family are grateful to our fine faculty whose achievements and dedication bring distinction to all who are associated with East Carolina. I look forward to receiving input to the selection process and I am confident that we will succeed. Please extend my appreciation to your colleagues on the faculty. Sincerely, Ashley B.
