Committee organization, subcommittees, activities

The University Computer Committee functions as a body to make recommendations
concerning academic computing to (1) the Faculty Senate, (2) Office of
Information and Computing Systems, (3) the Information Systems Advisory
Committee.

On November 17, 1981, the Chair divided the committee into three sub-
committees to develop Phase II Planning Recommendations for Academic
Computing for the next five years, in the areas of (1) hardware needs,
(2) software needs, (3) development of an administrative Office of
Academic Computing within CIS.

Committee accomplishments and recommendations outside the Faculty Senate

Numerous Hazeltine 1500 terminals were approved for purchase and place-
ment around the campus and in a new terminal room in Austin. These
terminals, purchased at a greatly discounted price through the efforts
of Dr. Crowe, greatly increased student and faculty access to the
Burroughs computer.

As a result of the Phase Ii Planning Recommendations for Academic Com-
puting presented to the ISAC by the Chair on March 12, 1982, the fol-
lowing proposals were passed by ISAC to be implemented immediately:

(1) creation of an Office of Academic Computing to be headed
by an Associate Director of CIS for Academic Computing.
This position is to be an EPA position with academic rank.
Dr. Robert Maier, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
made the commitment to fill this position with the next
available new academic appointment.

(2) The next available new position within CIS will be for an
additional person in the Office of Academic Computing.

(3) All new positions with CIS will be given consideration
for priority for staffing of the Office of Academic Com-
puting. : :

(4) Additional recommendations made by the UCC as submitted
to ISAC in the Phase II Planning Recommendations will be
worked into the change budgets for the next biennium, as
well as budgets over the next five years.

Business to be carried over to next year

Phase II Planning recommendations must be worked into the CIS change
budget requests for the next biennium. Procedures and guidelines need
to be worked out for the Office of Academic Computing.

Plans must begin for replacement of the Burroughs computer sometine
in’ the next biennium.

the structure of the committee is adequate and functional.
duties will evolve to include advising the Director of
Academic Computing concerning student and faculty needs
and setting further policies regarding Academic Computing.
the committee needs increased student and faculty input
concerning academic needs to better advise the OAC, ISAC,
and CIS as well as to better recommend academic policy

to those groups.

the committee is representative of most of the University
community who make use of computer facilities. Student
input into the committee has improved since a member

of the student chapter of ACM has been appointed to the
committee, and it is recommended that this student
representative continue.
