Date of reports to Faculty Senate December 8, 1981: Faculty Salary Survey Report Specific instructions given to the committee by the Faculty Senate None A. brief statement of committee organization, subcommittees , research activities The Committee has continued to attempt to improve the annual survey of faculty salaries and to apply appropriate statistical measures which reveal the general trend of salaries by rank, sex, degree, years in rank, and years at East Carolina University. The salary study, through its multiple linear regression to produce predicted salaries and its com- pilation of actual present salaries, can continue to be used to identify those individuals and groups of individuals who may suffer ‘salary inequities. aol gs Report of the Faculty Welfare Committee age May 20, 1982 ) ed The salary survey also contained comparative salary data for all constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina, and for the nation (as reported in Academe, the Bulletin of the American Association of University Professors). It is important that salaries at East Carolina University continue to be compared with salaries of comparable institutions within the state and throughout the nation. The Committee has also endeavored to apprise the faculty of proposed and actual changes in fringe benefits provisions: hospitalization, life insurance, and the assumption and tax sheltering of a portion of each state employee's retirement contributions. List of committee accomplishments including recommendations made to agencies other than the Faculty Senate The salary survey has been improved in terms of its format, the statistical measures utilized, and its degree of sophistication. ~Inclusion of comparative salary data from sister and comparable institutions has provided a global dimension to the salary study. ro Appropriate administrators have been provided salary data which they have long needed. 2 VIII. Proposals and/or business to be carried over to next year There should be a continuing effort to improve the Salary Study. Improve- ment in the computer program can probably be made which will help identify individuals who have suffered salary inequities. It is also possible that additional variables can be introduced into the multiple linear regression which will help to better understand those atrributes of performance which significantly affect salaries. Professor Louis Zincone, School of Business, was asked to make specific suggestions which he indicated ay be beneficial: no specific suggestions have yet been received. Proposals and/or business to be carried over to next year The Student Recruitment and Retention Committee recommends that the Faculty Senate, in cooperation with the University administration, develop and implement the following procedures: 1) Allocate Graduate’ Assistantship funds for the academic year by the end of the preceding spring semester so that departments can compete more effectively for outstanding graduate students, many of whom now receive offers from other state institutions before departments at East Carolina can make a commitment. Fund Assistantships for the entire academic year, using the previous year's allocation as a basis for determining the level of support, to facilitate departmental planning, recruitment, and retention.
