Dear Tom:

This office approves the appointment of the membership of the Faculty
Senate Academic Committees for 1981-82 as recommended by the Senate. However,
I am asking that the Senate adopt procedures which establish maximum lengths
of service on a conmittee. I think this is appropriate to insure that all
faculty have an opportunity to serve and is in line with the Senate's own
limitation of service in the Faculty Senate. I believe that there also should
be provision for a hiatus from service on any university committee. We number
some 800 full-time faculty and as many as possible should be given the oppor-
tunity to serve the university and to benefit from the enormous expertise of
these people.
