MINUTES OF. THE UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE March 19, 1981 The University Curriculum Committee met on March 19, 1981, in Brewster B-103 at 3:00 p.m. Members present: Grossnickle, Boyce, Daugherty, Hamilton, Leahy, Hancock, Broadhurst, Moore, Foley, Holt, and Cain. Member absent: Richards. The minutes of February 19, 1981, were corrected as follows: fifth paragraph, second sentence should read, "It was pointed out that the proposed new program was approved for planning with the request for new faculty and start-up money of $100,000." Paragraph seven, first sentence should read, , In the description of the B.S. degree in Communications, item 5, “electives SPCH 4891 and ENGL/JOUR 4891 were added to the list of other suggested electives and the total number of elective hours was changed to 3-6 s-h." Professor Erwin Hester, Department of English, requested permission to change the prerequisite for English/Journalism 4890 from “Senior standing and permission of instructor" to "Permission of instructor," and to change the prerequisite for ENGL/JOUR 4891 from "Senior standing; permission of instructor and writing program major or journalism minor" to "Permission of instructor." These changed appear on pages 133 and 136 of the 1980-81 Undergraduate Catalogue since they are double listed. Professor Holt moved to accept the changes as amended, Leahy seconded, and the motion passed. Professor Fred Parham, Chemistry. Department, presented a request to change credit hours for CHEM 5350, Instrumental Analysis I, from 2 s.h. to 3s.h. This changes the total hours for the B.S. degree in Chemistry on page 110 of the 1980-1981 Undergraduate Catalogue from 39 s.h. to 40 s-h. Professor Daugherty moved to accept the proposed change. Hamilton seconded, and the motion passed. Professor Odell Welborn, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Safety Department, presented a new course, DRED 5331, K-12 Safety Educa- tion. He stated that present library resources are adequate to support the course and the proposed new course can be supported from the present departmental library budget. Professor Hancock moved to accept the pro- posed course, and to eliminate DRED 5330, Holt seconded, and the motion passed, Professor J. Mitchell, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, presented a request to change the number of semester hours credit from 2 to 3 for SOCI 5336, Sociology of the Aged. Professor Boyce moved to accept the change, Hamilton seconded, and the motion passed. Professor Carl Gooding and Professor Ed Powers, Department of Market- ing and Management, School of Business, presented a new course proposal, MGMT 4492, Personnel Decision Making. Professor Gooding stated that library acquisitions would come from the regular library budget and that no computer usage was planned. He also asked the Committee to approve the addition of MGMT 4262, Small Business Management to the list of courses from which Students in the marketing concentration would choose two of the listed courses. Therefore, the marketing concentration would then read as follows: MKTG 4562, MKTG 4662, MKTG 4732, and select two from the following: MKTG 4352, 4362, 4752, 4772, 4892, 4972, 4262. Professor Robert Muzzarelli, Department of Speech-Language and Auditory Pathology, School of Allied Health and Social Professions, presented the request to remove ENGL 3760 as a cognate, and remove BIOL 2120 and BIOL 2121 as prerequisites for SLAP 2400. Letters in agreement with the proposed change were presented from Professor Erwin Hester, English, and Professor Ryan, Biology. Professor Holt moved to accept the changes, Broadhurst seconded, and the motion passed. Chairman Grossnickle presented the new course proposal format to the Committee for suggested change. After Committee discussion, a revised format was approved ty the full Committee (see attached). This format should be used for all new course proposals submitted to the University Curriculum Committee beginning fall, 1981.
