MINUTES OF THE UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE December 4, 1980 The University Curriculum Committee met on December 4, 1980, in Brewster B-103 at 3:00 p.m. Members present were: Grossnickle, Boyce, Moore, Daugherty, Holt, Broadhurst, Cain, Hancock, Richards, Leahy, Foley. Member absent was Hamilton. The minutes of Novenber 20, 1980, were corrected as follows: page 7, MGMT 4242 add to the catalogue description, "May not take PSYC 3241 for credit." It was also noted the Undergraduate Catalogue 1980-81 page 361 should list Music 3357 as corequisite for 3257, 3367 as corequisite for 3267, 4287 as corequisite for 4277. The minutes were approved as corrected. Chair Grossnickle reviewed the revised charge of the University Cur- riculum Committee with the members. Boyce moved to accept the revised Com-~- mittee charge. Daugherty seconded, and the motion passed. The Committee's recommendation is being sent to Professor Eugene Ryan, chairman of the Con- mittee on Committees. Chairman Grossnickle presented a request from the School of Art to remove ART 3750 from the Curriculum Bank. Grossnickle moved acceptance of the request, Boyce seconded and the motion passed. Professor Rick Barnes, Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Safety presented the new course proposal, HLTH 4340, Methods and Content in Health Education. The proposed course is a substitution for HLTH 4348 in the B.S. in Health and Physical Education major but HLTH 4348 will be kept on as an elective. In the course proposal, the last sentence in item E. was moved to the last sentence in F, Catalogue Description. The acceptance of this course changes the revised B.S. degree program in HPERS effecting page 166 in the Undergraduate Catalogue 1980-1981. Moore moved to accept the new course and change in the degree program as amended, Han- cock seconded and the motion passed. Professors Erwin Hester, McKay Sundwell, and John Warren of the Department of English presented new course proposals, ENGL 3430, Mystery Fiction and ENGL 3800,Computing for the Humanities. It was noted that a letter from Glenn Crowe, Director of the Computing and Information Systems supported the course proposal, ENGL 3800. Moore moved to approve the two course proposals, Holt seconded, and the motion passed. Professors Vila Rosenfeld, Joan Cassilly, and Evelyn Settle, School of Home Economics presented a number of proposals. On page 330 of the Under- graduate Catalogue 1980-1981 in the Community Services Option, Home Economics Education major, the cognate course JOUR 2100, Basic Reporting, be deleted and replaced by ENGL 3850, Writing for Business and Industry. On page 335 of the Undergraduate Catalogue 1980-1981 they requested permission to bank the following courses: HOME 2125, Meal Management and HOME 3207, 3208, 3209, Special Problems in Food and Nutrition. On page 337 of the same Catalogue od permission was requested to bank HOME 5343, Food Study Tour. Proposed curriculum changes for the Department of Food, Nutrition and Institution Management, B.S., Food Nutrition and Institution Management Major: Coordinated Undergraduate Program option were also presented. Add the required course, HOME 4328, 4329, Quantity Food. Catalogue copy on page 331 of the Undergraduate Catalogue 1980-1981 C. 2. should include the word, and between (Housing and Management) 2180 and 2181... On page 331, Undergraduate Catalogue 1980-1981 revision of degree requirements for the B.S., Food Nutrition and Institution Management Major was presented. Delete CHEM 1120, 1121, Basic Genergj and Organic Chemistry and add the following cognates: CHEM 1150, 1151, General Chemistry and Qual- itative Analysis; CHEM 1160, 1161, General Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis; CHEM 2650, 2651, Organic Chemistry for the Life Sciences. On pages 331 and 332 Undergraduate Catalogue 1980-1981 proposed revision in the minor degree requirements for the Food and Nutrition Minor: delete CHEM 1120, 1121, Basic General and Organic Chemistry. Add required cognate courses: CHEM 1150, 1151, General Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis, CHEM 1160, 1161, General Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis, CHEM 2650, 2651, Organic Chemistry for the Life Sciences. Professor Moore moved to accept the various changes as amended, Broadhurst seconded, and the motion passed. Item seven on the agenda was withdrawn. Professor Carol Hampton, Department of Science Education, presented two new course proposals, SCIE 3010, 3011, Nature Photography and SCIE 3110, 3111, Scientific Photography. Letters of support for the proposed courses were read from Dr. R. H. Laing, School of Art; Dr. William Byrd, Department of Physics; Dr. Fred Parham, Department of Chemistry; and Dr. C.Q. Brown of Geology. Richards moved to accept the courses, Daugherty seconded, and the motion passed. Professors Melvin Stanforth and Harry Baxley, School of Art, presented a revised BFA, Interior Design major, Information on this new program will appear in the Undergraduate Catalogue 1980-1981 immediately after the degree requirement for the B.F.A. degree in Art on page 284. The Committee revised the proposed program offered by the School of Art by allowing 9 s.h. of Art electives and adding 3 s.h. of free electives for item 4. The word free is substituted for the word general in item #4. The Committee expressed concern that the School of Art had not consulted the School of Technology, School of Home Economics, and Department of Psychology concerning possible overlap of courses presently offered and hereby proposed by the School of Art. The Committee expressed concern as to the brevity of the syllabi submitted by the School of Art. This revised program in Interior Design was presented in an effort to meet accreditation standards by the Foundation for Interior Design. New 2 course proposal presented were as follows: ART 2400, Design Survey; ART 2412, Interior Design Graphics; ART 2421, Design Theory and Methodology ;: 3 ART 2422, Interior Design Studio One, ART 3411 Interior Furnishings and Mate- rials, ART 3412, Interior Design Studio Two, ART 3421, Environmental Factors and Interior Systems, ART 3422, Interior Design Studio Three, ART 4411, Professional Practices; ART 4412, Interior Design Studio Four; ART 4421, Seminar in Contemporary Concepts; ART 4422, Interior Design Studio Five, The following courses will be deleted upon approval of the proposed courses: ART 1400, 2410, 3405, 3410, 3415, 3425, 4410, 4415, 5410, 5425, 5430. Professor Richards moved acceptance of the new degree program in Interior Design, School of Art as amended, Foley seconded. Moore moved to amend the motion by saying ART 2400, and 2410 be approved until the end of the academic term, 1981, contingent upon consultation with the School of Home Economics, School of Technology and Department of Psychology. This motion was seconded and passed. The main motion passed. Professor Hines, School of Business, presented a new B.S. program in Accounting and a new course proposal, ACCT 3581, Intermediate III. This course would constitute an elective course in accounting in the present program in Accounting. Moore moved acceptance of the new B.S. program and the new course proposal.
