MINUTES OF THE UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE November 6, 1980 The University Curriculum Committee met on November 6, 1980, in Brewster B-103 at 3:00 p.m. Members present were: Leahy, Grossnickle, Broadhurst, Daugherty, Holt, Hancock, Moore. Members absent: Foley, Boyce, Richards, Hamilton, Cain. The minutes of the October 16, 1980, meeting were approved. Professor Tinsley Yarbrough, Department of Political Science, presented the request to remove POLS 3282, East Asian Political Systems, form the Cur- riculum Bank and to place in the Curriculum Bank POLS 3280, 3281, and 4375. The following changes were requested in the B.S. and B.A. Degrees. For the B.S. Degree in Political Science, the Geography cognate requirement should be changed to GEOG 2001 and 2002 (or 1000 and 3003), plus one GEOG course numbered above 2999. Also, the English cognate should be changed to ENGL 2730 (or 2710) and 3880 (or 3810). The number of hours required in courses above the sophomore level should be changed from "at least 23 s.h."' to "at least 24 s.h." For the B.A. Degree in Political Sicence the number of hours for a major should be changed from 32 s.h. to 36 s.h. and the number of hours required in courses above the sophomore level should be changed from "at least 23 s.h."' to "at least 24 s.h.'' Professor Moore moved to accept the proposal, Holt seconded and the motion passed. Professor Caroline Ayers presented the proposal for a B.S. Chemistry minor which is identical to the present B.A. Chemistry minor. It was suggested that it be a minor for any B.S. degree. Holt moved the approval of the proposal as amended, Daugherty seconded and the motion passed. Professors Kenneth Taylor and Robert Weber presented the proposal for the Department of Social Work and Correctional Services. For the courses SOCW 3002, 4001, 5001, 5003, and CORS 3000 add “or consent of the instructor" to the prerequisites. Also, change the prerequisites for SOCW 4002 to SOCW 2001 or consent of the instructor. On page 273 of the 1980-81 Undergraduate Catalog change the wording of the last paragraph to read, "A social work major, with the addition of one or more approved courses from the School of Education, may be certified as a school social worker. Students who wish to be certified shall plan to do their field placement in an approved school setting and shall take Part I of the National Teacher's Examination." Also on page 274 of the 1980-81 Undergraduate Catalog change the wording of the first sentence in the first paragraph to read, "A social work or correctional services major may, by completing a minimum of four courses in alcoholism and/or drug abuse meet the educational requirements for certification as an alcoholic counselor in North Carolina."' In the B.S. Degrees for both Social Work and Correctional Services add under the required cognate courses ENGL 3300 as an option to HIST 2140 so that it will list " HIST 2140* or ENGL 3300°' Professor Holt moved to approve the proposal as amended, Moore seconded and the motion passed. University Curriculum Committee Minutes of November ©, 1980 Professors James White and Elizabeth Sparrow, Department of Business Education and Office Administration presented the request to change BUED 2112, Introduction to Data Processing, from 2 s.h. to 3 s.h. and to change all the affected degrees programs to reflect this change. Professor Broad- hurst moved to accept the proposal, Leahy seconded and the motion passed. Professors Frank Arwood and Peggy Mills, Department of Elementary Education, presented the request to delete ELEM 3220 and 4304 effective fall of 1981 and replace them with ELEM 4301, Organization and Planning in Early Childhood Education and ELEM 4302, Program Implementation for Kindergarten Through Third Grade, 3 s.h. each. These courses are to be required for the B.S. Degree in place of ELEM 3220 and 4304 and on page 319 where the "C" requirement is stated the new courses will replace the old ones. Pro- fessor Hancock moved to approve the proposal as amended, Holt seconded and the motion passed. Since there was no representative present from the Department of Science Education, their proposal was postponed. Designed to teach the student to recognize and appropriately inter- vene in crisis situations. socw 5001 Human Behavior and Social Environment for the Human Service Pro- fessions (3) (F,S) Prerequisite: SOCW 2000 or consent of instructor. Designed to assist the student in the development of a social systems concept of the bio-psycho-social elements of man's being. Emphasis is given to deeper self-awareness of one’s own behavior, attitudes, beliefs, and values as they relate to professional practice. The student is encouraged to enroll in this course during the semester Dd immediately preceding field placement. SOCW 5003 Processes of Group Intervention (3) (S) Prerequisite: SOCW 3003 or consent of instructor. Advanced preparation for practice of social work as a specialized method in the. delivery of social welfare services and program ad- ministration. CORRECTIONAL SERVICES CORS 3000 Residential Instituations (4) (F) Prerequisite: SOCW 20000r consent of instructor. Provides an overview of "total care institutions" - mental hospitals; institutions for the mentally retarded, children's homes and juvenile institutions; prisons and other adult correctional facilities, and other residential institutions. Designed to give the student an understanding of the history and the philosophy of the use of such institutions; their physical design, administration, programs, and staff roles within them.
