MINUTES OF THE UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE October 2, 1980 The University Curriculum Committee met on October 2, 1980, in Brewster B-103 at 3:00 p.m. Members present were: Boyce, Grossnickle, Broadhurst, Hancock, Holt, Leahy, Daugherty, Moore, Foley, Hamilton, and Richards. Member absent: Cain. The minutes of the September 18, 1930, meeting were approved. Chairman Grossnickle presented a request from Professor Charles E. Stevens, School of Music to remove MUSC 2238 from the Curriculum Bank in order to offer the course spring, 1981. Professor Foley moved to accept the request, Moore seconded, and the motion passed. Professor E. Hester, Department of English, presented a new course proposal, ENGL 3300, Women and Literature. Boyce moved approval of the course, Holt seconded and the motion passed. Professor Simon Baker, Department of Geography presented a new course proposal, GEOG 5085, 5086 Remote Sensing of the Environment. The Com- mittee corrected the number of semester hours allowed for the laboratory segment. GEOG 5085 to carry 3 semester hours; GEOG 5086 to carry 0 hours. Professor Leahy moved to accept the proposal as amended, Hamilton seconded and the motion passed. Professor Muzzarelli, Department of Speech, Language and Auditory Pathology, presented a number of proposals to the Committee. He requested the deletion of SLAP 3200, SLAP 4226, and SLAP 5520 by the end of the academic year 1981. He presented course proposals to be added to the required courses in the SLAP program: SLAP 2500, Introduction to Speech and Language Development which the Committee amended by adding Formerly SLAP 3200; SLAP 3300, Language Disorders in Children: Clinical Methods which was amended by the Committee by adding Formerly 4226. Professor Muzzarelli introduced as new course proposals as elective courses SLAP 3003, Advanced Sign Language (Sign Language III) and SLAP 3007, Introduction to Interpreting for the Deaf. Professor Muzzarelli requested the following courses to be made repeatable from 1-3 semesters SLAP 5510, SLAP 5511, SLAP 5512, Special Problems in Speech and Hearing carrying 2 semester hours of credit each. He said that these courses would allow senior and graduate students an opportunity to explore independently specific areas of interest and the courses would also be used for the continuing education component of the program. He also requested the clock hour description be changed in the undergraduate catalogue (p. 259) as follows: In addition to the following requirements, the student is required to achieve a minimum of 150 clinical clock hours in speech and hearing therapy. Sixty of these hours will be obtained at the East Carolina Speech and Hearing Clinic Page 2 of the October 2, 1980 University Curriculum Committee Minutes during the student's regular academic experience. It is advised that the student allow two semesters to achieve the 60 hours. The Committee decided to consider the various proposals as a whole with the exception of section D., the course sequence, SLAP 5510, SLAP 5511, SLAP 5512, Special Problems in Speech and Hearing. Professor Hamilton moved to accept the various proposals contingent upon approval by the Teacher Education Committee (SLAP 2300 and SLAP 3300) and as amended. Richards seconded, and the motion passed. Professor Boyce moved acceptance of section D. the repeatable courses SLAP 5510, 5511, and 5512. Broad- hurst seconded and the motion passed. Prerequisites: None A study of the theory underlying the operation of remote sensors and a survey of their applications in generating information about the earth's surface. Catalogue Placement: Page 156. SPEECH, LANGUAGE ยง AUDITORY PATHOLOGY SLAP 2300 Introduction to Speech and Language Development (2) (Formerly 3200) (Spring) Two (2) classroom hours per week. Prerequisites: None The acquisition and development of child language including phonological, syntactical, semantic cognitive and progmatic components is discussed to provide a framework for the study of child language disorders. Catalogue Placement: Page 278. SLAP 3300 Language Disorders in Children: Clinical Methods (2) (F)( Formerly Two (2) classroom hours per week. 4226) Prerequisites: SLAP 2300. The evaluation and treatment of language disorders in children is covered in detail. Specific testing and treatment pro- cedures are emphasized. Catalogue Placement: Page 278. Prerequisites: SLAP 3002 An advanced level course in American Sign Language, designed for students who have completed the Introductory and Intermediate courses in Sign Language. Advanced American Sign Language will lead to advanced expressive and receptive conversational sign language skills and will prepare students for an intro- duction to interpreting. Catalogue Placement: Page 278. SLAP 3007 Introduction to Interpreting for the Deaf (3) (F and S) Three (3) classroom hours per week. Prerequisites: SLAP 3001, SLAP 3002, permission of instructor. Introduction to basic theories, principles, and practices of interpreting for the deaf. The course will emphasize development of skills in educational interpreting and pro- vide an introduction to interpreting in the following settings: legal, medical, theatrical, musical, television, religious, job placement, mental health and counseling.
