I have forwarded to President Friday Resolution No. 4, passed
by the Faculty Senate on April 22. It arrived in this office on

May 16, after I had left the office until June 6.

In my letter of transmittal (copy attached) I have endorsed
the resolution with the exception of increases based on longevity.
In past conversations and communications with you and the Senate,

I have stated that merit increases should be based on contributions

to the University in the areas of teaching, creative activity, and
service.

I also note that the Resolution did not mention the correction
of salary inequities, which I am sure is of concern to us all.

Enclosed is Resolution No. 4, passed by the East Carolina
University Faculty Senate on April 22, 1980. I! endorse the
Resolution with one major exception. I do not support longevity
as a factor in salary increases; rather, I believe that merit
increases should be based on contributions to the University in
the areas of teaching, creative activity, and service. In add{-

tion, monies should be available for the correction of inequities,
an inadvertent omission from the Resolution.
