EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY GREENVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA 27834 OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR June 19, 1980 Dr. Tom Johnson Faculty Senate East Carolina University bewwa.s JeithTE Dear Tom: Lh -3')) I have forwarded to President Friday Resolution No. 4, passed by the Faculty Senate on April 22. It arrived in this office on May 16, after I had left the office until June 6. In my letter of transmittal (copy attached) I have endorsed the resolution with the exception of increases based on longevity. In past conversations and communications with you and the Senate, I have stated that merit increases should be based on contributions to the University in the areas of teaching, creative activity, and service. I also note that the Resolution did not mention the correction of salary inequities, which I am sure is of concern to us all. Sincerely, ad ae Thomas B. Dear President Friday: Enclosed is Resolution No. 4, passed by the East Carolina University Faculty Senate on April 22, 1980. I! endorse the Resolution with one major exception. I do not support longevity as a factor in salary increases; rather, I believe that merit increases should be based on contributions to the University in the areas of teaching, creative activity, and service. In add{- tion, monies should be available for the correction of inequities, an inadvertent omission from the Resolution. Sincerely, Thomas 8.
