Minutes Faculty Senate of East Carolina University Organizational Meeting of 1980/81 Academic Year 23 April 1980 The organizational meeting of the Faculty Senate for 1980/81 was called to order by Chairman Thomas Johnson on Wednesday, April 23, 1980, at 2:10 p.m. in Room 221 Mendenhall Student Center. The secretary called the roll. The following members were absent: Spruill (Geology), Mikkelsen (Education), Gulati (Business), Ledbetter (Business). The following alternates were present: Longhiil for Hamblen (Business), Lauffer for Gantt (HPERS). The following ex officio members were absent: Brewer, Maier, E. Ryan, Ferrell. Agenda Item 3. Caroline Ayers, Vice Chair of the Committee on Committees, presented the committee's nominations for committee assignments and explained how the selections were made. Only volunteers were nominated and an attempt was made to maintain an academic and sexual balance of members nominated to the committees. Longhill nominated himself for the Committee on Educational Policies and Planning. Vote was by secret ballot. Daugherty and Hursey served as tellers. BAL LOT | Davis Longhi B Trenton Davis was elected to the Committee on Educational Policies and Planning by the highest majority. Adler nominated John Longhill to the Committee for Teaching Effectiveness for a term expiring in 1982. Daugherty and Hursey served as tellers. John Longhill and Pat Pertalion were elected to the Committee for Teaching Effectiveness by the highest majority. Luquire moved that the Committee on Committees' nominations list as amended be adopted by the Faculty Senate. The motion was seconded and adopted on a voice vote, Agenda Item 4. Bernard Kane, Chairman of the Nominating Committee, presented the nominees for Chairman of the Faculty: Professors Janice Faulkner, Thomas Johnson, and Walter Pories. Vote was by secret ballot with Daugherty and I. Ryan serving as tellers. BALLOT Johnson Pories Ballots Cast oe} Faulkner withdrew after the first ballot. Professor Thomas Johnson (Health; Physical Education, Recreation and Safety) was reelected Chairman of the Faculty on the second ballot. Kane presented the nominees for Vice Chairman of the Faculty: Professors + Caroline Ayers and James LeRoy Smith. Hough nominated Professor Walter Pories. Vote was by secret ballot with I. Professor Walter Pories (Medicine) was elected Vice Chairman of the Faculty on the second ballot. Kane presented the nominees for Secretary of the Faculty: Professors Rodney Schmidt and Rosalie Haritun. Schmidt withdrew his name as a candidate. Hough nominated James LeRoy Smith. The vote was by secret ballot with I. Ryan and Daugherty serving as tellers. BALLOT Smith 20 Haritun 26 Ballots Cast! 46 Professor Rosalie Haritun (Music) was elected Secretary of the Faculty by majority vote. & Agenda Item 5. The Chair opened the floor for the Senate to elect five members to the Committee on Committees for the next academic year. He read the charge of the committee and noted that committee members do not have to be Senators. Grossnickle nominated Robert Woodside; Briley nominated Judith Sadler; Sadler nominated Caroline Ayers; Pories nominated Jack Brinn; Ayers nominated Eugene Ryan’ Longhill nominated Fred Hamblen; Haritun nominated Janice Faulkner; Gowen nominated Bodo Nischan. Agenda Item 6. The Chair read the charge of the Agenda Committee and opened the floor for the Senate to elect five Senators to the committee for the next a academic year. Allen nominated Lawrence Hough; Ayers nominated James LeRoy Smith; Muzzarelli nominated Y, J. Lao; Sadler nominated JoAnn Jones; Luquire nominated Anne Briley; Pories nominated Bodo Nischan; Longhill nominated Gorman Ledbetter. | BALLOT Lawrence Hough, James LeRoy Smith, Y. J.
