Johnson Chairman of the Faculty Faculty Senate East Carolina University Dear Dr. Johnson: With regard to the resolutions adopted at the Senate Meeting of March 24, the following are approved: (80-18) Resolution concerning the University Faculty Research Committee ea The Graduation List (80-20) The 1982 Summer Calendar (80-26) Amendment to the proposed change in the Constitution (80-29) Charge of the Career Education Committee No action was necessary on the following resolutions as the Faculty Senate recommited to the Calendar Committee: 8 (80-21) 80-22 @ be 80-25) (80-27) The following resolution is approved with comment: (80-23) Resolution requiring the Calendar Committee to circulate proposed calendar to the general faculty with a hearing prior to its submission to the Senate. My view is a hearing is unnecessary and time-consuming. The Faculty Senate is the representative body of the faculty and, together with the Calendar Committee, should be able to make this decision without a hearing, which I would predict would not attract more than a dozen people and consume valuable time of the members of the Calendar Committee. The following resolution is disapproved: (80-28) Charge for the Committee on Teaching Effectiveness. The administration's view on the need for student opinions as an additional factor to be used by chairmen and deans personnel actions is well-known. My letter of 1/29/80 to Professor Farr, and to which the Committee on Teaching Effectiveness had access, is clear on how the material would be used. Johnson nae Page 2 MAY (1980 May 5, 1980 FACULTY SENATE I also made clear that last year's questionnaire was a trial run, and we would take as much time as needed to reach consensus on form and method. The Committee and the Senate has rejected this approach and taken a position opposing student opinions in personnel actions. Naturally, I am disappointed the Senate chose to take this posture, which I consider hasty, rather than continue to clarify any confusion or misunder- standings. I regret that I must disapprove this resolution and hope that dis- cussions may continue in 1980-81. Sincerely, 47 4 Vi AL VSAM ale Thomas B. Brewer
