East Carolina University is a constituent institution of The University of North Carolina An Equal Opportunity /Aftirmative Action Employer Dr. Thomas H. Johnson Page 2 April 11, 1980 The following resolution is approved with comment: Ilo (80-%5) The charge to the Faculty Affairs Committee who will report to the Faculty Senate not later than September of 1980 con- cerning harassment of faculty by students. It is true that no task force had been charged with the particular task of reviewing this concern, the General Faculty Task Force is charged with the development or review of faculty life within the university community. This particular concern has been passed along to them for inclusion in their study. I believe that the Faculty Affairs Committee should look into the matter to ascertain how extensive the problem is and cer- tainly to investigate and make recommendations as to procedures to deal with the situation. I must confess that when I saw a "system of redress of grievances," I felt a little like George III receiving a communique from the Continental Congress! I hope you will excuse the historian in me. Actually, I believe that the Faculty Affairs Committee should address the entire question of student academic discipline. I have always believed that matters of academic discipline should remain within the academic division of the institution. If the Faculty Affairs Committee would like, I would be happy to share my views more specifically with them. singgrely Yours, 4 ieee Pe Thomas B. Brewer
