If something seems familiar about today’s game, here’s why. Today’s game marks the third straight season that ECU has opened its home schedule with Syracuse. Unlike the past two seasons, the Pirates have two games under their belts prior to their meeting with the Orange. ECU (1-1) rebounded from its 13-10 loss at Duke on Sept. 10 with a 31-14 road victory over Big East conference member Temple last Saturday in Philadelphia, Pa. Meanwhile, Syracuse (2-1) has already played three games this sea- son. The Orange opened with a 30- 29 loss to Oklahoma on Sept. 3 and since have picked up two wins with a 34-19 victory over Cincinnati and a 37-36 win against Rutgers last week. Today’s game will have many similarities to those of the past but for Pirate fans, there’s one welcome change with a noticeable improve- ment in the ECU defense. The Pirates made big improve- ments defensively from 1992 to 1993 and are continuing to make strides early in 1994. After their first two games, the Pirate defense ranks 28th in total de- fense, 15th in pass efficiency defense, 20th in scoring defense ehayel 1d qh shi rushing defense in the latest NCAA statis- tics. fi In its season Smith opener, ECU held Duke to just 83 rushing yards 2 EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY GAME PROGRAM and 253 total yards while in the Temple contest, the Owls had only 63 rushing yards and 333 total yards. Together ECU’s offense and de- fense have combined efforts to rank first in the nation in turnover mar- gin, a statistical category the Pirates nearly finished last in last season. In their first two outings, the Pi- rates are averaging a gain of 3.0 turnovers per game. Contributing to the effort was a no oops game at Temple. ECU forced five Temple turnovers and had none of their own. It was the first time in 30 games a Pirate team has not hada turnover. ECU’s last “perfect” game came against Akron in 1991. Keep Your Eyes On Two names that remain the same from the last three ECU-Syra- cuse meetings are those of running backs Junior Smith and Kirby Dar Dar. Smith is coming off his fourth highest rushing performance of his career with 165 yards and two touchdowns against Temple. A two-time 1,000 yard sea- son rusher, Smith is cur- rently 22nd in the nation in rushing, aver- aging 117 yards per game. Heis 114 Dar Dar yards shy of becoming ECU’s all-time rusher. An “average” per- formance by Smith today will yield the Pirate senior the ECU record. Dar Dar leads Syra- cuse in rush- ing with 184 yards this sea- son and has scored 30 of Silas 100 points this season. He is currently 13th in the nation in scoring. as Crandell Under Center Eyes will also be on the quarterbacks in today’s games. EeGeUmeis Marcus Crandell makes his return to Dowdy- Ficklen af- ter suffering a season- ending in- jury in 1993 on the Pi- rate home field. Crandell currently ranks 32nd in the nation in total offense since his return in 1994 but has yet to com- plete a touchdown pass this season. The Orangemen’s Kevin Mason begins his first season under center for Syracuse after backing up Marvin Graves for three seasons. The senior has the offense on track with the Orange averaging 33.3 points a game. Mason leads the team in total offense, averaging 158.7 yards a game, has completed 24 of 42 passes with five touch- downs passes and has been pick off three times. The ECU-Syracuse Series Today’s game is not nationally televised, as was last year’s meet- ing, but it promises to be as excit- ing as those of the past. Syracuse Mason olden Corral Steaks, Bulfet & Bakery Today’s Corporate Sponsors The East Carolina University Department of Athletics thanks today’s corporate spon- sors, Golden Corral and Washington Toyota, for their support of Pirate athletics. Golden Coral Corporation, founded by James Maynard (ECU ’65) has capped two decades of expansion by being selected as one of the nation’s “Great Growth Chains.” Selection to the restaurant industry’s “Dream Team” was made by an authoritative trade magazine, Restaurants & Institutions. This same magazine has named Golden Corral the nation’s favorite steakhouse chain two years in a row in 1992 and 1993. Golden Corral’s growth has been dramatic by continuing to expand its operations with 247 company and 172 franchise units. Today, these 419 restaurants can be found in 41 states and Mexico. Total sales continue to rise in 1994 and are projected to reach over $500 million. Growth alone was not sufficient for the awards given to Golden Corral, according to the magazine’s editors. They stipulated that winners also had to score exceptionally well in customer surveys measuring value, food quality, cleanliness, service, convenience, atmosphere, menu variety and overall customer satisfaction in the steakhouse category, traditionally one of the most highly contested industry segments. Golden Corral is projecting continued strong growth. With the success of its second generation restaurants, otherwise known as metro restaurants, Golden Corral is intro- ducing two new restaurant designs. The first will be designed for mid-market cities, 25,000 to 50,000 residents, and will seat 350 guests. The second will be placed in smaller, hometown markets and will seat 250 guests. Menu variety will continue to remain broad with the Golden Corral Buffet that offers some 120 to 170 items. The centerpiece of the restaurants in the Brass Bell Bakery where baked goods are prepared in full view of cus- tomers. The CEO of Golden Corral is Ted Fowler, who succeeded Mr. Maynard in 1984. Mr. Maynard is chairman of Investors Management Corporation of Raleigh, the parent cor- poration. For many years Washington Toyota has been a friend to East Carolina University and an avid supporter of the ECU Pirates. Each year they donated two athletic scholar- ships and a courtesy car to the Chancellor’s Society program. “At Washington Toyota, we hold the concept of team spirit to be a working philoso- phy,” said V.P. & General Manager Mark Montenero. “We support ECU’s athletic pro- grams because they unite the state and the community.” Their sponsorship of today’s game continues this tradition of patronage. Since it’s inception, Washington Toyota has grown to be one of the strongest Toyota dealerships in the United States. They are established as a direct factory outlet for Toyota and, as such, are able to provide car buyers with all the discounts, rebates, and financing that comes from this relationship. In addition, their dedication to customer satisfaction has won them Toyota’s coveted President’s Award. leads the series 4-1 and has won the last two meetings but ECU never forgets the 23-20 victory of 1991 in the Carrier Dome. The win was the Pirates’ first-ever victory over a na- tionally-ranked opponent. The Or- ange were ranked 15th in the nation at the time. What a Win Would Mean Each Pirate victory this season brings ECU closer to a berth in a post-season bowl. In August, five NCAA Division I-A Independents, including ECU, formed an alliance that is competing for a berth in the St. Jude Liberty Bowl. ECU joins Tulane, Southern Miss , Memphis and Cincinnati for a berth in the Dec. 31 bowl game. The best over- all NCAA Division I-A record will qualify the school for the berth. Through games of Sept. 17, South- ern Miss leads the races with a 2-1 record while the Pirates are second. Eakin, the terms “academ- ics” and “athletics” are not mutually exclusive, but mu- tually reinforcing. He knows from personal experience. As a Geneva College undergraduate, he majored in mathematics and physics while a member of the basket- ball team. He also served as President of the Student Sen- ate and Class Valedictorian and was graduated in 1960 with the honor summa cum laude. Today Dick Eakin is in his eighth year as ECU’s chief executive officer and his leadership mark is evident throughout ECU, including athletics. He has a vision of greatness for ECU and leads in the belief that the university can build upon and add to its elements of distinction and strong tradition for excellence in teaching, research, regional services, and athletics. With enthusiasm and remarkable stamina, Dr. Eakin pursues this vision around the clock and on-the-road as ECU’s highly visible top ambassador. Strategic planning has been the linchpin of the Chancellor’s administration. From it have evolved new degree programs, new and stronger centers for excellence, campus beautification and modernization of facilities, an emphasis on computer technology for students and fac- ulty, and an energetic, focused fund-raising plan for aca- demics, athletics, and medicine. Improved campus life and stu- dent services continue to be high on the Chancellor’s agenda. Under his direction, the campus has a new state-of-the-art dining hall and is building a student recreation and wellness center, and a $30 million addition to the campus library. With an enrollment of nearly 18,000 students, ECU is the third- largest institution of the 16- campus University of North Carolina system. It has a work force of more than 3,500, a faculty numbering more than 1,100 and a budget of almost $290 million. The campus today is alive not only with the activities of its students and faculty but also with the whir and clatter of construction crews. More than 20 percent of the campus is under construction or renovation or will be in the next few months. Among the prominent projects are the Student Recreation Center, which will be completed in the fall of 1995, and the additions and renovations to Joyner Library, which will be under way for four years. ECU students come from all 100 of North Carolina's counties, 45 states and 38 nations. Of the students, 57 percent are women, 83 percent are undergraduates and 13 percent are minorities. The initial fund- raising drive for the football stadium in the 1960’s and the Shared Visions Campaign of the 1990’s are signs of ECU’s continued dedication to accom- plish athletic excellence. Both events brought together con- cerned East Carolina supporters in an effort to make dreams become realities for Pirate football. As early as the 1960’s, the James 5. Ficklen Family envisioned great things for East Carolina Athletics. A Greenville resident, Ficklen dis- tinguished himself as one of America’s leading tobacconists. At the time of his death in 1955, Ficklen was the Presi- dent and Chairman of the Board of the E.B. Ficklen Tobacco Company of Greenville. He was a close friend of the College and established a financial aid foundation, the Ficklen Foundation, to aid students of the College. “My father was very fond of East Carolina,” said Jim Ficklen. “He was very supportive of the progress that the school was making in such a short time. Continuing Ficklen’s support, his family made a contribution to the foot- ball stadium fund raising drive and their gift led to the naming of the Ficklen Stadium. It was about that time, an East Carolina College student named Ron Dowdy was about to graduate from East Carolina College and he envisioned great things in his future. Great things did happen for him and as a result in 1994, the Ficklen and Dowdy names became forever linked in ECU history becoming namesakes of the football sta- dium, the most visible landmark in Green- ville. In September, 1961 East Carolina President Leo Jenkins made an an- nouncement that a fund-raising drive for the ECU football stadium was beginning. Under the dynamic leader- ship of W.M. Scales, Jr., Chairman of the Fund raising committee, the dream soon was on its way to becoming a re- ality. In December of that year , just two months later, the fund had already passed its original goal. “The committee worked very hard and did a wonderful job that my fa- ther would have been pleased with,” said Ficklen. “When the committee came to my family and asked our per- mission to named the stadium for him, we were very flattered and accepted.” Ground was broken on May 3, Stadium. The building of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in 1963 was the beginning of great things to come for Pirate football. 44 EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY GAME PROGRAM Jim Ficklen and Ron Dowdy, namesakes of ECU’s Dowdy-Ficklen 1962 by Mrs. James S. Ficklen, widow of the stadium’s honoree and on Sept. 23, 1963, East Carolina dedicated Ficklen Stadium with a 20-10 win over Wake Forest. The dedication was the culmina- tion of a dream come true for then East Carolina College and all of Eastern North Carolina. Nearly 17,000 fans were in atten- dance at the dedication game. Among them was Dowdy. Little did he realize the part he would play later in the his- tory of the stadium. In a ceremony held at halftime of the game, then North Carolina gover- nor Terry Sanford, said Ficklen Stadium was a “symbol of the drive and spirit of initiative that has come to represent all the endeavors of East Carolina College.” The original stadium consisted of the permanent stands on the south side, a press box and lighting system. The permanent seating on the north side was constructed in 1968, increas- ing the stadium seating capacity to 20,000. Even at the beginning of the ini- tial stadium project, organizers envisioned bigger and better things for East Carolina football , designing the stadium to be capable of being ex- panded one day in the future. In the spring of 1977, another step was taken in that direction when a sec- ond stadium drive began. This time to expansion would increase the seating capacity from 20,000 to 35,000. By the beginning of the 1978 sea- son , the expansion on all four corners increased the seating at Ficklen Stadium, making it the third larg- est in North Carolina. Progress continued and in 1993 plans were announced for the University’s Shared Vision’s Cam- paign, a $50 million effort which included $9 million for another phase of stadium expansion. The expansion plans call for the addition of a new two-story press box facility on the south side of the stadium, from end zone to end zone. An enclosed, climate- controlled donor seating area will occupy the second floor of the fa- cility. Service to the donor setting area will be via three elevators. Concession facilities and bathrooms will be in- cluded in this club seating area. A major step in the expansion oc- curred on April 15, 1994 when Dowdy, and wife Mary Ellen, who now reside in Orlando, Fla. announced a $1 mil- lion gift to the East Carolina University Educational Foundation, the fund- raising arm for ECU athletics. The gift, a part of ECU’s Shared Visions Campaign, was earmarked for the planned expansion of the stadium. The 1978 expansion of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium increased the seating capacity to 35,000. The expansion included seating to the four corners of the original stadium. Dowdy, who graduated from East Carolina in 1966, followed his college years with service in the United States Air Force from 1966-71. During his tenure, he reached the level of Captain flying over 4000 hours Ronand Mary Ellen Dowdy join Jim Ficklen in admiring the proposed entrance to the Stadium which bears their names. and 232 B-52 Combat Missions over North and South Vietnam during his career. After leaving the service, Dowdy entered the imported fine gift and fur- niture business in Winter Park, Fla. At the peak of his gift shop business, Dowdy had over a dozen ships, han- dling $2 million in sales annually. He also managed the successful campaign of Florida State Senator Alan Trask. “Mary Ellen and I have always had a fond and close relationship with Dave and Pam Hart , “ said Dowdy. tics with Dowdy°Ficklen Stadium “We gave the money to acknowledge and support Dave’s fine job and that of the Athletics department at ECU.” At present, Dowdy is serving his alma mater as a member of the school’s Board of Trustees and cur- rently oversees commercial leases, residential apartments and several other enterprises, a part of Dowdy Properties in Orlando. Dowdy has been involved with many civic organizations, in- cluding the Executive Committee of the Florida Citrus Sports Asso- ciation, the Board of Directors for the Florida Citrus Bowl, the Board of Directors at Humana Hospital Lucerne in Orlando and the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee in Orange County. “The Dowdy-Ficklen relation- ship is just starting to blossom. I am very gracious for the Ficklen family’s kind and generous offer to al- low the co-naming of the stadium,” said Dowdy. “The Dowdy’s generosity graphi- cally represents the new level of horizon we are realizing through the Shared Visions Campaign,” said Dave Hart, Jr., ECU’s Director of Athletics. “The continued growth and the national visibility of our athletics pro- gram is dependent upon a successful campaign. The Dowdy’s have pro- vided us with a very timely, and very gracious boost, and we are most ap- preciative.” It was written in 1963 at the time of the original stadium dedication “the naming of the stadium stands as material evidence of two living facts. First, that the size, scope and shape of East Carolina Col- lege ever broadens. Second, that the people of the surrounding community are actively lending vigorous support to the college as it strides ahead.” The statement still rings true today and ECU fans can celebrate the begin- ning of a new era at ECU, one which sees Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium as the home of Pirate football. In April, 1994, Ron and Mary Ellen Dowdy, of Orlando, Fla., announced a $1 million gift to the ECU Educational Foundation. The gift will go toward the planned expansion of ECU’s football stadium, which will be renamed Dowdy- Ficklen Stadium. Ron Dowdy, who is a member of the school’s Board of Trustees, currently oversees commercial leases, residential apartments and several other enterprises, as part of Dowdy Properties in Orlando. Dowdy, a 1966 graduate of ECU, has been involved with many civic organizations, including the Executive Committee of the Florida Citrus Sports Association, the Board of Directors for the Florida Citrus Bowl, the Board of Directors at Humana Hospital Lucerne in Orlando and the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee in Orange County. The original plan for the stadium was announced on Oct. 7, 1961, by Dr. Leo Jenkins, Chancellor of the College, at a meeting of the Society of Buccaneers. Within a year, $283,387 had been raised, although the goal had been only $200,000. With the funds in hand, Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium was built. The original stadium consisted of the permanent stands on the south side, a small press box and the old lighting system which was removed after the 1974 season. Total cost was $300,000. The north side permanent seating was constructed in 1968, increasing the stadium seating capacity to 20,000. The stadium was named for the late James Skinner Ficklen, a Greenville resident, who distinguished himself as one of America’s leading tobacconists. At the time of his death in 1955, Ficklen was President and Chairman of the Board of the E.B. Ficklen Tobacco Company of Greenville, He was a close friend of the College and established a financial aid foundation, the Ficklen Foundation, to aid students of the College. The first major change in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium was the lighting systems, a change that occurred just before the 1975 season opened. The old inner stadium lights on six poles were removed and replaced with six towers outside the stadium. The system is a combination of metallic and incandescent lights. There are 288 fixtures of 1500 watts each on six 162-foot towers. Cost of the system was $450,000. A radical change greeted fans as the 1978 season opened. An expansion on all four corners boosted Dowdy-Ficklen’s seating capacity from 20,000 to 35,000, the third largest stadium in North Carolina. This expansion was made possible with 2!/2 million dollars through a drive in the spring of 1977. In addition to more seats, the current press box with three levels and an elevator for access was built. The press box has space for 92 writers and an entire floor for electronic media. Also, a modern scoreboard with a lightbank message center was placed on the east end of Dowdy-Ficklen. During the summer of 1983, a complete renovation took place on the playing surface. A new drainage system, a new base of gravel and sand, new treated topsoil and a new grass was installed. The new grass, Tifton 419 Hybrid Bermuda was sprigged at the rate of 600 bushels per acre. The 1992 season saw the season attendance record fall in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium as the Pirates drew a school-record 164,068 fans for five home games. Future plans call for expansion of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, with an upper deck. That would add an estimated 15,000 seats, giving the stadium a capacity of 50,000. Also, plans call for a renovation of the press box, enlarging it to include a club seating level. Whether it being named all-confer- ence, all-Ameri- can, or making it tO) athies proLes- sional level of their sport. How- ever, for current East Carolina volleyball player, Carrie Brne, the goal was quite clear and simple: represent the United States in the Olympics. You see, that goal could be classified unrealistic for most. However, Brne had that goal within reach, before giving up the sport she had dedicated herself to for 12 years; gymnastics. She embarked on her gymnastic ca- reer at the ripe age of two, in her native city of Chicago, Illinois. Little did she realize, she would later be in the same gym and training with 1984 gold med- alist Mary Lou Retton and future Olym- pians in Kim Zmeskal, Kristi Phillips and Phoebe Mills. If that wasn’t enough, having world-renowned Bela Karolyi as a coach was a great opportunity to learn from the best. Karolyi first set his mark on the gymnastic world in 1976, coach- ing the highly-prolific Romanian Na- tional Squad and superstar Nadia Comeneci. “T went down to Houston for a simple summer camp, anyone could go,” said Brne. “Someone noticed me. Marta, Bela’s wife, took me out of camp and asked me to be evaluated for their summer camp. I got evaluated and I was asked to stay the rest of the summer.” At first, Brne might have been in- timidated by her surroundings, but then eventually settled down and set out on a conquest to make that goal more of a reality instead of a fantasy. “I was in awe to be in the same gym with the best coaches and best athletes in the nation and in the world,” said Brne. Even though Karolyi wasn’t her group coach, he was very supportive of Brne, during her run at the dream of making the Olympics. By John Gilger, ECU Sports Information “He was very en- couraging tome. When- ever I needed help, he would give me help,” said Brne, who com- pared Karolyi to a teddy bear. “When we did something right, he would come up and give you a great big hug. He would squeeze you to death.” The training in Houston obviously paid off in 1985. The year fol- lowing the camp, Brne captured the state title in the balance beam and finished sixth in the all- around competition in the State of Illinois. However, a year later, things started to catch up with Brne. Her mother was sick and in the hospital and the trips to the gym became less frequent. Her love for the sport began to crumble. “T started so young, I just basically got burned out,” said Brne. “I wasn’t in the gym a lot, but every time I did go, it seemed that everything was harder on me. I personally couldn’t take it any- Brne and Olympic Gold Medalist Mary Lou Retton. Brne receives a “bear hug” from Bela Karolyi. more and one day I just said I quit. There was a lot of pressure on me.” Sure, Brne has regrets when asked her about the decision to give up 12 years of practice and her ultimate goal. She wishes the outcome would have been different. “T wish I would have stayed,” said Brne. “I will never know if I would have made it or not. You never know what might have happened.” A few weeks ago, Dominique Dawes ended Shannon Miller’s reign at the U.S. National Championships. While millions of people watched the event on television, Brne didn’t. Why? “It is hard for me to watch,” said Brne. “I didn’t watch the 1992 Olym- pics because that was the year I would have been in it. I! watch Kim Zmeskal. I trained with her. I watched her on the television and said “why, you know, that could have been me.” Now that Brne’s dreams and goals of making the Olympics are gone, she continues her success on the volleyball court for ECU. “She is like lightening which will strike this year,” said ECU head volley- ball coach Gail Guttenberg. “Her dedi- cation to volleyball has allowed her to become our key in all different types of situations. Watch for her to light up the court this season.” EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY GAME PROGRAM 67 is Today’s Opponent Syracuse Football Facts Head Coach: Paul Pasqualoni (Penn State ’72) Conference: The BIG EAST Stadium: Carrier Dome (50,000) Color: Orange Enrollment: 10,200 Chancellor: Kenneth Shaw Athletic Director: Jake Crouthamel Paul Pasqualoni Head Coach Jake Crouthamel Athletic Director Ken Shaw Chancellor Syracuse is in the 105th season of intercollegiate football, The team began play in 1889 and has compiled a record of 583-3 83-49, 13th on the all-time major college victory list. When it came time for Mason to make a decision, he had knocked his choices down to Vir- ginia and Syracuse. Mason chose the Orangemen in the end. The fact that his parents were just a two and a half hour drive from SU and would be able to see him play quite a bit, weighed into the decision. At least Mason thought his folks would see him play a lot. It hasn’t exactly worked according to play. You see, Mason’s first four years at SU have mostly been from the sidelines watching former teammate Marvin Graves, something he had not planned on when he decided to become an Orangemen. “T thought that I would play after my freshman year after Mark McDonald graduates,” Mason said. “But when Marvin started in his first season, I knew I had a long wait ahead of me.” Waiting for his chance to shine was something Mason was not accustomed to, and for a brief period, he thought about leaving SU. “Not starting bothered me at first be- cause I’m a competitive person. I didn’t come here to sit the bench. I pulled out the card of the Virginia coach who recruited 68 EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY GAME PROGRAM me, but called my parent’s first,” Mason remembers. “We decided that it was best for me to stay at Syracuse and wait for my turn.” The fact the Mason remained an Orangemen is a testament to the type of hard working, team oriented ball player he has been since coming to Syracuse in 1990. “Very few players, in a high profile position such as quarterback, would have been as patient, loyal and productive as Kevin. It’s a great credit to him as an indi- vidual,” SU offensive coordinator George DeLeone said. ‘Many people have not taken advantage of that type of situation, whereas Kevin learned by waiting in the wings. I just hope he can cash in on its.” So do the Orange faithful who came into the 1994 season with a great deal of skepticism about SU’s field leader. The heat was on Mason to perform in his first start against perennial powerhouse Oklahoma, not only in front of 50,000 fans at the Car- rier Dome, but with an ESPN national tele- vision crowd watching his every move as well. Mason did not do much to dispel the doubts of SU fans in the first half against the Sooners. In fact, his opening 30 min- utes as a starter were downright miserable. His first pass attempt of the season was intercepted and his halftime stats read as follows - two completions, 11 pass at- tempts, two interceptions, fora grand to Kevin Mason tal of 13 yards through the air. Oh yea, the score was 24-0 in favor of Oklahoma. “I was getting frustrated because I know I don’t play football that way. Being on ESPN, against Oklahoma, I wanted the show people I earned my job and that it wasn’t handed to me just because Marvin left,” Mason said. As disappointing as Mason’s first half performance was in that contest, his final 30 minutes were every but as uplifting. Ma- son brought the Carrier Dome crowd to its feet with a dramatic comeback that saw SU take a 29-27 lead with 1:01 left in the game. The play that gave SU the lead was a perfectly thrown 48-yard pass from Mason to Marvin Harrison. Earlier in the half, Mason had con- nected the Har- rison on a 78-yard bomb and scored Tony Jones Fr ¢ DB Dave Rebar Jre LB Melvin Tuten Sr e OL on a six-yard run of his own. It’s true that Oklahoma came back to defeat SU 30-29 in the final seconds, but it was Mason who ignited the offense, prov- ing to his skeptics that he belonged as the team’s field general. Now that he has won over many of the SU followers, who had seen the Orange go to six straight bowl games before missing out last season, Ma- son has his sights set on more lofty goals. “Td like to win as many ball games as possible and play mistake-free football,” Mason stated. “I’d also like to be the quar- terback that gets our bowl streak back on track.” Anyone who saw the second half of the Okla- Bryce Bevill Sr ¢ DB if. Money raised through the Pirate Club’s annual fund drive is used to help fund Pirate student-athlete scholarship costs. The Educa- tional Foundation’s goal for 1994 is to turn over a record $1,050,000 in unre- stricted scholarship funds to the University’s Athletics Department. Future goals of the Pirate Club include full-funding of all student-athlete scholar- ship costs associated with ECU’s 18 men and women’s sports programs. In today’s dollars, that translates to approximately $1.7 million in unrestricted scholarship support. The “backbone” of the Pirate Club organization is its thirty-five com- munity chapters located in North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, Geor- gia and Washington, D.C. Each chapter is lead by a local chapter president who implements the fund raising plans for the Educational Foundation and coordinates the annual spring social-where athletic and Pirate Club staff and coaches update each chapter on upcoming seasons and events. A recent innovation started three years ago, is the Pirate Representa- tive program. This program has put nearly 300 committed, well-informed volunteers in the field making solicitations to increase support of Pirate ath- letics. Pirate Reps provide a more personal contact in local communities and assist in keeping Pirate Club donor records updated. In addition to receiving a sense of pride and personal satisfaction from investing in the lives of ECU student-athletes, Pirate Club members receive certain other benefits including priority in purchasing season football and basketball tickets; priority in purchasing bowl and post-season game tick- ets, private and semi-private parking at home athletic contests; access to the Pat Draughon Donor Lounge and the Pirate Club Building during ECU ath- letic events; monthly updates on the Pirate athletics program through the “Purple Report”; and various recognition items. To our many Pirate Club Members, we thank you for your continued support. LIFE At East Carolina University, athletic and academic excellence are inseparable goals for student-athletes. The University is com- mitted to the academic success and graduation of students par- ticipating in its athletic programs. The Department of Athletics supports this commitment with extensive counseling services in order to maximize the success of every student-athlete. “Our mission looks beyond fielding competitive teams and winning games,” said ECU Director of Athletics Dave Hart, Jr. “Winning, while important to all of us, is only a part of that devel- opment. Graduating student-athletes who are responsible for themselves and to our society is our ultimate goal.” Under the direction of the ECU Student Development Staff, headed by Pam Overton, Pirate student-athletes have reached new heights in academic achievement during the past few years. East Carolina has had seven student-athletes become recent GTE-CoSIDA Academic All-Americas, including baseball player Lee Kushner, a second-team All-America in 1993, softball player Laura Crowder, a second-team last year, and swimmer Marc Cook, who earned first-team honors in 1992. Stacey Boyette (softball) was given the honor twice, Pam Young (softball), Robin Graves (softball) and Steve Sides (baseball) have also attained the high honor. Also, this year, the College Football Association recognized ECU for its football graduation rates with an honorable mention Academic Achievement Award. The ECU Athletics Department is committed to its Student Development Program and the understanding that student-ath- letes become well-rounded in all aspects of life. East Carolina University is proud to be one of 47 pilot schools participating in the NCAA's Life Skills Program and one of five serving as model programs. The NCAA and the Division IA Ath- letic Directors Association have developed a life skills program for student-athletes to help them bridge the gap from college to career and in the process make meaningful contributions to their communities. The mission of the CHAMPS (Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success) Program is to provide a personal de- velopment program designed to reach each student-athlete based on his or her individual needs. The focus of the program is on the student-athlete, as a whole person—academically, athletically and emotionally—and on their changing needs and skills during col- lege and in the years after graduation. The CHAMPS Program is comprised of five key com- mitments that address critical areas of personal development: (1) The Commitment to Academic Excellence, (2) The Com- mitment to Athletics Excellence, (3) The Commitment to Per- sonal Development, (4) The Commitment to Serve, and (5) The Commitment to Career Development. Ultimately the CHAMPS Program is designed to help student-athletes realize higher academic achievement, a_ |) higher level of maturity, self-responsibility and greater over- all success. As a participant in this program, ECU is dedi- cated to carrying out all the program’s goals and commitments. The Office of Student Development does this with a staff dedicated to the principle that the development of the stu- dent-athlete is the most important objective. Overton is in her 11th year of overseeing the academic progress of all student-athletes at ECU. The staff is also in- volved in personal, social and career counseling as well as supervising the study center and tutorial program for all of ECU’s student-athletes. Carlester Crumpler, Nita Boyce, and Bobbi Welch also serve as academic counselors while Dana Monson is the office’s aca- demic development coordinator. Among the Academic Development Services available for stu- dent-athletes are tutorial programs, study halls, academic skills development, orientation, and reading and math assessment. Additional programs such as interview skills workshop, tu- torial recruitment and training, leadership development seminars, a speaker’s bureau and community service programs are an im- portant part of the student development program. The athletics department has set up several prestigious awards for ECU student-athletes. For the past five years, Texasgulf, Inc. has sponsored the ECU Outstanding Scholar-Athlete Award. The award is designed to be the most prestigious that is presented annually to a male and female athlete. Last year, Eric Adamski, a cross country runner, was the male recipient, and Cathrine Norstrand, a cross country/track performer, was the female re- cipient. Student-athletes also can serve on the Student-Athlete Advi- sory Council, which serves as an advisory organization for the staff of the Office of Student Development and the Department of Athletics. The council is comprised of two members from each intercol- legiate athletic squad. The primary goals of the council include (1) serving as a liai- son between athletic teams and the Office of Student Develop- ment, (2) emphasizing academic opportunities and responsibilities, (3) encouraging student-athletes to apply what is learned in ath- letics to their course of study and career development, (4) imple- menting orientation programs for student-athletes, (5) encouraging development of leadership skills, (6) promoting positive relation- ships between student-athletes and student body and (7) imple- menting programs that will promote a positive image for intercollegiate athletics and the student-athlete. “College athletics is the natural place to give young people the important opportunity not only to grow in the areas of physi- cal development and athletic ability,” said Hart, “but just as much in the areas of academic, social and personal development.” Adds Hart, “We in the East Carolina program are in the ‘people business’, because after all, ‘People are our most important Wg 4 product’. 1994 Student-Athlete Advisory Council: Front row: (I-r) Stacey Green, Jill Wagner, Eileen Moore, Rhonda Rost, Chelsea Earnhardt, Belinda Cagle, Angela James, Elke Garten, Marvina Hamilton, Tracie Podratsky, Cindy Symanski, Tracey Garrett. Almost every facet of the job — recruiting, scouting competition, making public appearances, etc. — are activities that keep athletic personnel on the move. The “wheels” that keep East Carolina’s athletic program rolling are a group known as Courtesy Car Dealers, and they play a vital role in allowing the Pirate staff to meet their demands. Far more than just a fringe benefit, these cars given by the East Carolina Courtesy Car Dealers are necessities for a growing and successful athletic program. The entire East Carolina staff wishes to thank each dealer providing a car to this fleet of courtesy cars. We hope our fans will look to these fine people for their automotive needs at every opportunity. Thanks Courtesy Car Dealers! You keep the wheels of East Carolina athletics rolling. Thanks also goes to Adam’s Car Wash of Greenville. Adam’s helps keep ECU’s courtesy cars looking clean. S.D.
