        <p>Jane Fonda returns to Fayettenam<lb />Friday Nov. 6th at Haymarket Square Coffeehouse<lb /><lb />The War<lb /><lb />In Indochina<lb /><lb />BRAGG BRIEFS is published in the spirit of the Declaration of Independence<lb /><lb />and the United States Constitution.<lb />duty GI's stationed at Fort Bragr,<lb /><lb />It is a free press, published by active<lb />North Carolina and dedicated to eatabli-<lb /><lb />shing responsible aiternatives to the present military and economic systems.<lb /><lb />The United Way?<lb /><lb />_ The United Fund has been with us<lb />for a long time , and probably will<lb />be with us a long time after this<lb />article is forgotten. The question<lb />that comes to mind is how the United<lb />fund is in any way related to G.I.s<lb />or thier cause,<lb /><lb />. To simplify things, General Tolson<lb />feels that there's a relation. On<lb />@ locally broadcast radio station he<lb />urged all Army personel to support<lb />the United Fund "based on the prin-<lb />cipal of voluntary giving" but even<lb />more specifically support for the<lb />local organizations to which most<lb />of the U.F. funds are allocated in<lb />order to "improve the enviorment of<lb />the military and civilian community<lb />in which we live,"<lb /><lb />But let's ask the question; how<lb /><lb />much does this improve the so called<lb />"oenviorment of the military commun-<lb /><lb />ity." Granted the town of Fayett-<lb />ville has a great deal to gain and<lb />rightfully so, for why shouldn't<lb /><lb />their United Fund drive be as suc-<lb />cessful as that of Raleigh, or Char-<lb />lotte, or even New York City, and<lb />Boston? Especially when they have<lb />380,000 troops to give their fare share,<lb /><lb />However, the real question at<lb />hand is not knocking these organi-<lb />zations, for they all have merit,<lb />but essentially appealing to the<lb />people behind them, the citizens of<lb />Fayettville themselves.<lb /><lb />For example, the citizen who owns<lb />the pawnshop and is charging 15%<lb />interest per month (which comes out to<lb />180% ver year); or the citizen who<lb />owns the used car lot, but as soon<lb />as you remove it from his sight he<lb />doesn't want to know you anymore;<lb />the citizen who owns the jewelry<lb />store and is willing to offer you<lb />"a no money down, sign on the dotted<lb />line, pay thru the nosé for the rest<lb />of-your life contract,"<lb /><lb />These are only 4 few of the tech-<lb />niques that are developed to im-<lb />prove your enviorment, Esséntially<lb />you have created an atmosphére where<lb />even the would be creditable buii-<lb />ness man feels the (economic) press-<lb />ure to jump onto the bandwagon. This<lb />atmosphere is truly an unhealthy one,<lb />but unfortunatly one with which the<lb /><lb />Army seems willing to co-exist.<lb />All right, this appeal to the<lb /><lb />civilian community is all well and<lb />good, but with my experience in life<lb />I've become a mild pessimist, espec-<lb />lally when it comes to financial mat-<lb />ters. So let's assume that the good<lb />citizens of Fayetteville have deaf<lb />ears (probably clogged up with dollar<lb /><lb />bills).<lb /><lb />or<lb /><lb />(cont. on page 6)<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />ON<lb /><lb />FREe ~TO §<lb /><lb />CHICAGO CONSPIRATOR, RENNIE DAVIS,<lb /><lb />RETURNS TO FAYETTEVILLE<lb /><lb />Peace<lb /><lb />lnitiative<lb /><lb />by the<lb /><lb />People<lb /><lb />Rennie Davis, of the Chicago Cons«:<lb />piracy and local May 16th Day "noter-<lb />lety", came back to Fayetteville on<lb /><lb />Friday, October 16 to speak to a stan-<lb /><lb />ding room only crowd at Haymarket<lb />Square coffeehouse,<lb /><lb />The main topic of the evening was ®<lb />the United States governments! lack<lb />of effort in ending the war, and the<lb />alternative idea of the people of<lb />this country, themselves, taking the<lb />initiative of negotiating a peace<lb />treaty with the people of Vietnan.<lb /><lb />National coordination is now being<lb />set up to start the organizing and<lb />publicity for a direct American-<lb />Vietnamese compact to end the war and<lb />set a June 30, 1971 deadline for<lb />troop withdrawel,<lb /><lb />The work on setting up the negote:<lb />lation teams and the negotiations them-<lb />selves is now starting to take place<lb />with the idea of giving the Nixon ad-<lb />ministration, Congress, the Courts,<lb />or whatever part of the government<lb />structure that wants to take up the<lb />treaty, until May 1, 1971 to impli-<lb />ment it.<lb /><lb />If the Nixon administration does-<lb />n't take action on the Peoples treaty<lb />by then, Rennie said, it will be up to<lb />the people of this country to impli-<lb />ment it themselves, There is a maj-<lb />ority of. people in this country that<lb />disagree with the war and they must<lb />physically begin to "pull out" if<lb />the Nixon administration refuses to.<lb />If, by May ist, Nixon and the Cong-<lb />ress don't agree to pull out by the<lb />June 30th deadline, there will be<lb />international reactions,<lb /><lb />If the government doesn't stop<lb />the war, then the people will stop<lb />the government. There are now plans<lb />being made to mass thousands of auto-<lb />mobileg on the major roadways in Wash-<lb />ington D.C. on May 3rd, and close<lb />down the capitol with a giant "break-<lb />down", if thats what it will take to<lb />get a response,<lb /><lb />The Nixon administration has ignored<lb />the 8 point peace plan proposed by the<lb />Provisional Revolutionary Governments!<lb />representatives in Paris, and he= kept<lb /><lb />the American veeonls uninformed of this<lb />(cont. on page 9)<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />GITs SPEAK OUT<lb /><lb />BROTHERS,<lb /><lb />One day during the month of<lb />Aug. Pv-2 Courson (5th Evac Hosp)<lb />was driving a jeep, while pulling<lb />his duties as staff duty driver.<lb /><lb />It was approximately 1830 Hrs<lb />(6:30) in the evening and private<lb />Courson was stopped at a stop light<lb />when an unknown individual started<lb />yelling at him to put on his hat.<lb />He really didn't see any sence in<lb />putting it on, because he was under<lb />cover while driving the vehicle.<lb /><lb />He then proceeded with the green<lb />light and was told to pull over by<lb />this extremly hostile character-<lb />still unknown by his rank..So<lb />Courson proceeded to pull off the<lb />road...e..then he was ordered out of<lb />the jeep and told to stand at<lb />attention and salute, (in the middle<lb />of the road)<lb /><lb />Courson did what he was told<lb />to do, but thought that this<lb />character was really so far out<lb />that the whole incident was really<lb /><lb />FunNYeceeces<lb />The Lt Col told Courson that<lb /><lb />he had a oAss poor attitude, since<lb />Courgon was a Pv-2 with 26 months<lb />in the Green Machine, and Courson<lb />agreed with him...this made the Lt<lb />Col almost blow up-what a temper-<lb />so he called Coursons unit and<lb />recommended an Art 15-which<lb /><lb />Courson laughed at again, and<lb />refused it; requesting a Special<lb />Court Marshall.<lb /><lb />Well, nothing was heard of it.<lb />The Lt Col waited about ten day's<lb /><lb />later when Courson was put ona<lb /><lb />levy for Europe-he was told by a<lb />very reliable source (no names) that<lb />the Lt Col tried to send Courson<lb /><lb />to Vietnam, but too bad, because<lb />he's a Vietnam Vet.<lb /><lb />So now the brass has once<lb />again solved another problem by<lb />an oversea's transfer and I only<lb />have 9 months until my E.T.S.<lb /><lb />Thank you Lt Col Hathaway for<lb />the transfer I always wanted to see<lb />Europe.<lb /><lb />Sincerely,<lb />Richard D. Courson<lb /><lb />Seen<lb /><lb />Brothers,<lb /><lb />I'm just another face, of the many<lb />that are in this man's Army. I am<lb />against the war in Indochina, which<lb />automatically puts my name on the<lb />list for harrassment and details. One<lb />particuarly annoying detail is Bat-<lb />talion Police. I am a parachute rig-<lb />ger, which is a critical MOS. So<lb />critical in fact that we're not sup-<lb />posed to wear our red hats on this de-<lb />tail, so that Generals, and Colonels<lb />don't recognize us as riggers.<lb /><lb />The man who decided that there had<lb />to be a battalion Police had to have<lb />some kind of animalistic tendencies,<lb />Who else would work men all morning<lb />long and afternoon in the hot NY¥rth"<lb />Carolina sun without a break, while<lb />the people in charge of the detail sit<lb />around in an office and drink coffee<lb />all day long? What's even better<lb />(for them) is that if they have to go<lb />to the bathroom they can go for as<lb />long as they want and not even have<lb />to stand behind a tree or anything.<lb />There really aren't that many trees<lb />we can stand behind because we police<lb />in the lirers Deck yards, and their<lb /><lb />wives always look out the back windows<lb />and laugh at the men tramping tnrough<lb />their weeds and garbage.<lb /><lb />(cont on page 8)<lb /><lb />HOW COME<lb />THERES NO<lb />BLACKS iN<lb /><lb />THIS HONKIE<lb />OUTFIT 2!<lb /><lb />WG #8 f-{<lb /><lb />UNDERSTAFFED, |<lb /><lb />50 THEY ASSIGNED Le 2<lb />US A RETURNING yo,<lb /><lb />wy Man<lb /><lb />Ps<lb /><lb />COMBAT-OFFICER Gee<lb />ON TEMPORARY ey eh |<lb /><lb />DEAR SIRS,<lb /><lb />I have just Coupleted reading the<lb /><lb />latest issue of Bragg Briefs dated<lb />Oct. 1970. I must ask"where do you<lb /><lb />gather your facts? I trust it is from<lb />an authoratative source since several<lb /><lb />statements evidently supported b oO<lb />ur<lb />Paper are open to question. a:<lb /><lb />quite interesting. The article entitled<lb />"Constitutional Convention" described<lb />by someone known as "we" serves as an<lb /><lb />exquisite example of wha<lb /><lb />considered "hent and ih Mod Sah<lb />ideas expressed by this article are<lb />merely borrowed from gentlemen like<lb />Marx, Lenin, Hitler, and Roosevelt. I<lb />would like to point out two constant<lb /><lb />areas Overlooked by Newton and Co. Take<lb />the "article" and &amp;0 down each para-<lb /><lb />graph and ask yourself "who" will set<lb />the standards for the militia, police,<lb />child-care centers, etc; and "whol will<lb />decide who and who will not serve; and<lb />"who" will be exempt and for what rea-<lb />sons; and "who" will decide what will<lb />be done to those who do not chooseto<lb />serve in the "people's militia" (Volks-~<lb />grenadin in Hitler's time), or the<lb />"people's police," or those who choose<lb /><lb />not to give up their 4 month old child<lb />(or would you rather have me believe a<lb />child can decide for itself, ) Also, ask<lb />yourself "who" will decide what consti-<lb />tutes "social ideas" and what is meant<lb />by "practice." Racism is a social idea,<lb />what is practice? People are to wel-<lb />come grass, acid, and wesealine to dey-<lb />elop a "revolutionary consclousness:"<lb />May I point out that people on acid<lb />trips generally require someone not on<lb /><lb />a trip to supervise and watch that the<lb />ones on the trip don't harm or kill<lb />themseives. Also, people who use grass<lb />state that things move Slower, such as<lb />reaction time and coherent thought. Is<lb />this the great "revolutionary conscious-<lb />ness"=-one that must be superviseq"<lb /><lb />who will supervise? All the drugs men-<lb />tioned, in some way, Suspend or distort<lb />the conscious mind of the individual.<lb />Without supervision many would harm or<lb />~kill themselves while "more aware",<lb /><lb />No one statement ever expresses<lb /><lb />who. It should be obvious. Those who<lb />speak of collectives speak of power,<lb /><lb />and those who speak of power speak of<lb />ruling. One line really deserves study-<lb />"the only solution to air pollution is<lb />revolution." Sheer genius. Burning build-<lb />ings and flags will only serve to pol-<lb />lute the air. Is it not clear now who<lb />Will do the deciding and who will do<lb /><lb />the following? History clearly shows<lb />that no brand of socialism has ever<lb />worked. By what suspension of reason do<lb />you believe it will work in the most<lb /><lb />advanced nation on the globe. Or would<lb />you have us do #way with machines and<lb /><lb />On Weekends HELIS<lb />AvALTLABLE FoR<lb /><lb />MrRacseés AT THE<lb />WEST COAST<lb /><lb />On!<lb /><lb />(cont, on page 11)<lb /></p>

          <lb />ILLEGAL<lb /><lb />WAR<lb />LOBBY<lb /><lb />"The Association of the United<lb /><lb />States Army welcomes any American<lb />who is interested in the Army and<lb /><lb />national security, and who sub-<lb />scribes to the aims of the As- '<lb />sociation." So goes the official<lb />recruiting line of the AUSA, an<lb />organization only vaguely under-<lb />stood by most GI's. Just what<lb />"the aims of the Association"<lb />actually are and what the AUSA<lb />actually stands for are not inm-<lb />mediately evident but can be quite<lb />important should you be asked or<lb /><lb />coerced to join the AUSA in any fu-<lb />ture membership drive at Fort Bragg.<lb /><lb />AUSA came into being in 1950<lb />with the merger of the United<lb />States Infantry Association and<lb />the United States Field Artil-<lb />lery Association. It was soon<lb />restructured in 1956 to elimin-<lb />ate conflicts of interest by mili-<lb />tary officers by removing active<lb />duty military personnel from the<lb />governing board and key offices.<lb />This change increased the effecti-<lb />veness of the organization and led<lb />to an increase in the membership<lb />to 100,000, most of which were<lb />either in the Army or in defense-~<lb />related industries. AUSA also<lb />established offices in washington<lb />from which it could base and con-<lb />duct its programs. Since that<lb />time, the AUSA has worked to in-<lb />fluence defense policy to pro-<lb />vide for an Army that could meet<lb />smali-scaie agression anywhere in<lb />the worid and give flexibility<lb /><lb />to the strategic nuclear response,<lb /><lb />AUSA currently uses the $6vuU,000<lb />4t coliects in dues from its men-<lb /><lb />bers and untola amounts it collects<lb />from detense industry membership<lb />and ads in its magazine to support<lb />@ number of programs. (Exactly<lb />how it spends its money is aiffi-<lb />cuit to ascertain in that the AUSA<lb />recentiy faliea to even supply<lb /><lb />4ts budget to a member who re-<lb />quested it for his own knowledge.)<lb />tnese programs include support for<lb />oacceleratea procurement of the<lb />most moaern weapons and equip-<lb />ment for the army," support of the<lb /><lb />rw<lb /><lb />y's Ri 7.<lb />us A os<lb /><lb />YOU CAN OVEKIL, US 50 TAS,<lb />ONLY OVERKILL YOUDTIMES, 3<lb /><lb />Se ee<lb />T WE (AN<lb /><lb />(wwaewerwwere = ee foal<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Saturday, October 10, twelve men-<lb />bers of Fort Braggs'<lb />inst the War went to Washington,<lb />North Carolina, in support of a wor-<lb /><lb />kers strike against the local Hamilton<lb /><lb />Beach plant.<lb /><lb />The workers, ,.mostly Black women, are<lb /><lb />members of Local 3678, Communication<lb />Workers of America and are striking<lb />for a 25 cent an hour wage increase,<lb /><lb />recognition of senority, and improve-<lb />ment on benifits. The workers are paid<lb />an average wage of $1.93 an hour, one<lb /><lb />quarter of the workers make only the<lb />minimm wage.<lb />Since the work is of a seasonal<lb /><lb />nature, with a peak period of employ-<lb />ment just prior to the Christmas rush,<lb /><lb />many workers are laid off with no<lb /><lb />regards to seniority. The best way to<lb /><lb />keep working is to brown-nose the<lb />bosses and to keep quite about con-<lb /><lb />ditions. Anyone questioning the worke:<lb />ing conditions will end up on the out-<lb /><lb />side in short order.<lb /><lb />The factory management does not<lb />recognize the union as the auth-<lb />orized spokesman for the workers,<lb />and calls the strike illegal---<lb />this allows the factory to use<lb />scabs (outside workers) and also<lb />to harass the strikers,<lb /><lb />Since the factory is the dom-<lb />inate economic factor in Washing-~<lb />ton, it is able to use local pig<lb /><lb />C5A, "full support of our coun-<lb />try's objectives in Southeast<lb />Asia," endorsement of oworldwide<lb />deployment of U.S. Army forces,"<lb />support for the "development of<lb />an ABM system," and support for<lb />"efforts to make disrespect for<lb />the Flag a federal offense."<lb /><lb />The Braxton Bragg Chapter of<lb />AUSA, headed by Joe Barr,<lb /><lb />has as its chief activity the an-<lb />nual membership drive at Fort<lb /><lb />Bragg.<lb /><lb />The drive is actually carried<lb />out by scores of appointed project<lb />officers and employs the same or-<lb />ganization and tactics as other<lb />drives except that it focuses<lb />mainly on officers and NCO's,<lb /><lb />Last year's drive produced 3,632<lb />new members and $27,756 and main-<lb />tained the Braxton Bragg Chapter's<lb />stature as one of the largest in<lb />the world.<lb /><lb />The legality of such a drive for<lb /><lb />a political lobbyist organization<lb /><lb />GI's United Aga-<lb /><lb />one anit<lb /><lb />forces to arrest workers on chicken-<lb />shit charges, and to keep the pick-<lb />eters from interfering with the op-<lb />erations of the factory.<lb /><lb />Twenty-six workers have been<lb /><lb />arrested so far, including one wo-<lb />man who struck the driver of a car<lb />who slammed into the picket line,<lb />injuring a women severly.<lb /><lb />Members of GI's United of Fort<lb />Bragg decided to show solidarity with<lb />the workers, and went by motor<lb />Caravan to help with the picket-<lb />ing. Within minutes there were three<lb />state patrol cars, two city and<lb />county pig cars, and the local dog<lb />catcher on the scene.<lb /><lb />The pigs stopped the GIs at the<lb />strike and asked to see registra-<lb />tions, ID cards and passes, Fortu-<lb />natly, all the GIs had come prepared<lb />for such harassement, and had their<lb />shit in order.<lb /><lb />Of course the local press did<lb />not cover any of the action because<lb />it's all controlled by Hamilton.<lb /><lb />The strikers have recieved, and<lb /><lb />are continuing to recieve aid from<lb />student groups and womensT organ-<lb /><lb />izations, They can still use help.<lb />For more information contact:<lb /><lb />Comminications Workers of America<lb />Local 3678<lb />Washington, N.C.<lb /><lb />Power to the Workers! !<lb /><lb />which employs federally-employed<lb />officers on duty and in uniform to<lb />carry it out, as well as the other<lb />activities--advertisement on post,<lb />use of the Fort Bragg Public In-<lb />formation Office for publicity,<lb />voluminous publicity in the semi-<lb />official Paraglide, and the offer-<lb />ing of adniniettats¢ leave to<lb />attend the annual convention as an<lb />incentive for membership-has not<lb />as yet been formally questioned.<lb /><lb />The Hatch Act, passed by Con-<lb />gress years ago to eliminate poli-<lb />tical activity and corruption among<lb />federal employees places strict<lb />limitations upon such activities<lb />and opens a question of illegality.<lb />@ust what provisions or standards<lb />of fairness allow the AUSA to main-<lb />tain offices, conduct membership<lb />drives, and distribute and display<lb />printed material on Fort Bragg while<lb />GI's United and other groups are<lb />denied that right is also a yet an<lb />unanswered question.<lb /><lb /></p>

It is an example<lb /><lb />bo?<lb /><lb />what he felt to be the reasons why<lb />reveille had to be maintained.<lb /><lb />A.*It serves as a focal point in<lb />time to assure all men in the bar-<lb /><lb />racks are up and accounted for,<lb /><lb />B. It sets in motion the necessary<lb />and orderly personal and inter-per- -<lb />sonal actions necessary for morning<lb />ablutions, cleaning of barracks and<lb />breakfast prior to work formation,<lb />Officers and men not living in hhe<lb />barracks must arise as early or earl-<lb />ier to ready themselves for duty."<lb /><lb />Regarding the first point, ac-<lb />countability is taken at the seven<lb />o'clock formation for off-post per-<lb />sonnel, the same could be done for<lb />personnel living in the barracks,<lb /><lb />Regarding the second point, every-<lb />one in the 39th Group is able to get<lb /><lb />up, Wash, clean the barracks, have<lb /><lb />breakfast and put on dress greens<lb />prior to the seven o'clock payday<lb />formation. <lb />Withdraw Now ~<lb /><lb />The weakest link in the chain of<lb />American Imperialism was Vietnam--<lb />now Indochina. It should be clear<lb />Since the extension of military<lb />action into Cambodia and Laos, that<lb />the present Nixon administration<lb />intends to hang on in Southeast Asia<lb />as long as it is able, vainly hop-<lb />ing for a military victory.<lb /><lb />Washington will not get out of<lb />,Indochina one day sooner than the<lb />Indochinese revolution coupled with<lb />a broad American anti-war move-<lb />ment compel it to.<lb /><lb />President Nixon's October 7th<lb />proposal in no way signals,a shift<lb />in the United States military or<lb />political objectives in Southeast<lb />Asia, but arrogantly asserts the<lb />"right" to militarily occupy and<lb />dictate the terms of government tbo<lb />the nations and people of Indochina.<lb /><lb />If Nixon's administration really<lb />Wants peace, as it seems by the<lb />withdrawal program currently in<lb />progress, why doesn't it dump Thieu,<lb />Ky and Khiem now instead of next<lb />year or year after?<lb /><lb />Washington realizes, just as<lb />Saigon knew long before the Viet-<lb />namization program began, that the<lb />present Thieu-Ky group could not<lb />stand total U.S. withdrawal, yet<lb />Nixon maintains in public that he<lb />is pulling out support while in<lb />fact preserving the puppets.<lb /><lb />Why not make a firm declaration<lb />that the United States is getting<lb />out and negotiations for a per-<lb />manent peace begun? What is Nixon<lb />holding onto? It can only be the<lb />4llusory hope of a military tri-<lb />umph.<lb /><lb />The search for peace demands not<lb />only military de-escalation, but<lb />also political de-escalation in<lb />the sense that those caught in<lb />between the two extremes must begin<lb />to share the power.<lb /><lb />Disassociation of the United<lb />States position at Paris from the<lb /><lb />position of the Saigon government,<lb />the U.S. negotiating only for its<lb />own withdrawal, can be the only<lb /><lb />way to achieve a reasonalbe and just<lb />peace for the people of Indochina<lb /><lb />to establish self-determination.<lb /><lb />That the United States can jus-<lb />tify 1ts military intervention in<lb />Vietnam on the basis that it must<lb />defend the principle of self-de-<lb />termination for the people of South<lb />~Vietnam is beyond comprehension.<lb /><lb />The establishment of peace in<lb />Indochina only requires conditions<lb />in which the people can determine<lb />their own future for themselves.<lb /><lb />It has been for this free choice<lb />that the National Front for Lib-<lb />eration has fought for ten years and<lb />not to impose a political monopoly<lb />on the people.<lb /><lb />Mme. Of this Brigade letter<lb />this commander says" It is recommend-<lb /><lb />ed that part of its intent 1s to answer<lb />the oabsentee landlord syndrome" iden-<lb />tified in inter-racial seminars." ..,.<lb />There is little demonstrated benefit<lb /><lb />to be derived. In the recent<lb />past a bedcheck was initiated against<lb />the 5th Evacuation Hospital with a<lb />result that many already know about.<lb />On three consecutive nights the AWOL'S<lb />numbered twenty-three, twenty six, and<lb />ten. All this from an approximate<lb />twenty seven men.<lb /><lb />If bedcheck is re-initiated, Ft.<lb />Bragg will see such a rash of AWOL'S,<lb />mass disobedience, and mutiny as has<lb />not been seen since the G.i. It comes from the<lb />Mafia businessmen who control the<lb />largest "corporation" in America.<lb /><lb />RENNIE DAVIS<lb />| AT<lb /><lb />HAYMARKET SQUARE<lb /><lb />(cont.from page 1)<lb /><lb />plan, and the growing dissent against<lb />the war among popular leaders in the<lb />Saigon government.<lb /><lb />Rennie brought out the Vietnamese<lb />proposals, that when Nixon agrees,<lb />even in prinicipal, to a withdrawal .<lb />date, that all U.S. prisoners of war<lb />will be released, and a cease fire<lb />will begin. The PRG has stated that<lb />_the present Saigon government struc- |.<lb />ture and ARVN forces can remain intact<lb />and coalesce with ail major forces and<lb />personalities to form a provisional<lb />government. This government will hold<lb />the long promised free elections that<lb />the U.S. government has continually<lb />thwarted,<lb /><lb />On the other hand, Nixons proposal<lb /><lb />speaks of negotiations for a cease-<lb />fire, but says nothing about re-<lb />moving U.S. troops at any time. This<lb />is the main reason the people of Viet-<lb />nam, Laos, and Cambodia have said no<lb />to it---there is no sign of any break<lb />in U.S. control.<lb /><lb />Davis showed how the "backward"<lb />nation of Vietnam has stood up against<lb />all the tremendous U.S. firepower that<lb />has been leveled at it for the last 10<lb />years. Vietnam shows that ordinary<lb />people can win against the, "machine*,<lb />The question is, how are we going to<lb />end imperialism? End racism? End<lb />sexism? End a system based on pri-<lb /><lb />vate greed? Rennie Davis said that we<lb />have an obligation to build our own<lb />future, and so did the audience,<lb /><lb />The work towards the development of<lb />@ peoples peace is now starting, and<lb />GI's are an important of it. That's<lb />why Rennie Davis came to Fort Bragg---<lb />te start letting people know whats<lb /><lb />WELCOME WE'VE MET MANY OF YOUR VICTIMS. we must come together to deal with<lb /><lb />Herman Khan, Pentagon egghead researcher,<lb /><lb />the head of the RAND (research and deve-<lb />Lopment corporation), did a study for<lb />the U.S. Government on the strength of<lb />the Mafia and concluded that "the Mafia<lb />is so powerful that all the U.S. can<lb /><lb />do about it is negotiate. wWhy would<lb /><lb />hey want to negotiate? They work<lb /><lb />well together in their destruction<lb />and oppression of people.<lb /><lb />One of the reasons I think that<lb />we see so much smack is that smack<lb />slavery is an attack on our people by<lb />the power structure of this country.<lb />Drugs like LSD, pot, mescaline, can<lb />help people have experiences that are<lb />about learning to live in new ways.<lb />The youth culture in this country 1s<lb />linked to these life-giving experiences.<lb />WE ARE NOT ABOUT SMACK OR SPEED OR THE<lb />SYSTEM OF LIFE IN THIS COUNTRY THAT IS<lb />OPPOSED TO OUR SEARCH FOR LIFE. If we see ourselves as a<lb />community of people who are trying to<lb />live a new kind of life together,<lb /><lb />being done. It's time to get to-<lb />gether to end the war, and every<lb />individual must do his part, mst<lb />begin to take control of his own life.<lb /><lb />This was Rennie Davis' message.<lb />Port Bragg GI's can play an integral<lb />part in the action, but its up to ua,<lb />it's our lives. 3<lb /><lb />the problems that face us. One<lb />thing that we know about America<lb />is it's isolation. Many of us are<lb />trying to be hip im response to<lb />the isolated futures that this<lb />country has laid out for us. Arrests can now be made<lb />without warrants, offices broken<lb />into, and detainees kept incom-<lb />municado for three months on end<lb />without charges,<lb /><lb />The wave of repression, includ-<lb />ing the use of armed troops in the<lb />city of Montreal, began soon after<lb />the FLQ kidnapped James Cross,<lb />British Trade Commissioner in<lb />Canada, and Laporte.<lb /><lb />The action of the FLQ, a re~<lb />volutionary socialist group fight-<lb />ing for a Quebec independent of<lb />English and USedominated Canada,<lb />has provoked strong reactions,<lb />negative and positive, among the<lb />French in Quebec, who are 83% of<lb />the Quebec population and 43% of<lb />all the unemployed in Canada.<lb /><lb />As Minister of Labor, Pierre<lb />Laporte was a despised figure who<lb />stymied the interests of Quebec's<lb />working class movements up and<lb />down the line, a man who could do<lb />nothing to stave off unemployment<lb />and misery, and a man who worked<lb />for the English. He was also an<lb />"assimilationist" who did not<lb />~believe that the Quebecois are a<lb />people who have a country of their<lb />own,<lb /><lb />Thus when Laporte's body was put<lb /><lb />on public display in Montreal,<lb />local TV stations were forced to<lb />carefully edit their tapes of the<lb />osolemn mourners" in front of the<lb />casket--too many of them were<lb />cracking jokes, poking each other<lb />in the ribs, and smiling.<lb /><lb />ONCE AND FOR ALL!<lb /><lb />-""""<lb /><lb />|<lb />|<lb />|<lb /><lb />both |<lb /><lb />|<lb /><lb />The most dangerous result of the<lb />kidnapping/execution may not be the<lb />crushing of the FLQ itself; instead<lb />the brunt of-government repression<lb />is falling on the entire spectrum<lb />of the Quebec liberation movement,<lb />of which the FLQ is only a small<lb />segment.
