The answer is pretty ob-<lb />vious, and the evidence to support<lb />the answer is just as apparente<lb /><lb />Let*s cite a few actual exam-<lb />ples of real and serious disres-<lb />pect and contempt:<lb /><lb />Take the case of the colonel<lb />at Fort Brass who holds some pri-<lb />vate business interests in a tract<lb />of land adjacent to a nearby small<lb />towne The colonel would naturally<lb />like to develov and profit from<lb />this lands; and, being a shrewd<lb />fellow, he decides to advertise<lb />his holdingse So he orders govern-<lb />ment photographers under his com-<lb />mand to take government cameras<lb />and government film, hop aboard a<lb />sovernment airplane flown by a<lb />sovernment pilot, and take aerial<lb />photographs of his land. This film<lb />is processed and printed in a sov-<lb />ernment lab, then used by a gf0v-<lb />ernment lithographer to make up<lb />posters and brochures written by<lb />government writers and printed<lb />with sovernment paper and inke<lb />ieanwhile government illustrators<lb />are busy with sovernment paint and<lb />posterboard preparing siscns to a-<lb />dorn the colonel's acreage. If<lb />that weren't enough, he uses sov-<lb />ernment vehicles and sovernment<lb />drivers to cart those signs, pos-<lb />ters and brochures about, and for<lb />a good measure has a few lowly<lb />Gil*s taggins alons to lug the<lb />stuff around. When you fifure in<lb />the cost of manpower and mater-<lb />ial, this little caper - having<lb />nothing to do, mind you, with the<lb />mission of the colonel's unit,<lb />perpetrated solely for his own<lb /><lb />(continued on pave 6)<lb /><lb />Youn? and<lb /><lb />disre-<lb /><lb />United<lb />at Fort Brage,<lb />atives to the current militar<lb /><lb />States.<lb /><lb />published in the spirit of the Declaration of Independence and the<lb /><lb />It is a free press published by active duty<lb />North Carolina dedicated to establishing responsible<lb /><lb />and economic stemSe<lb /><lb />bonation<lb /><lb />NCY. This is a milit-<lb />ary regulation which forbids the<lb />press to report on ointelligence<lb />activities, methods of operations<lb />or specific locatione The penal-<lb />ty for any such violation would<lb />be revocation of press credentials<lb />in South Vietname Such a corporate<lb />giant as Newsweek has been warned<lb />not to report on US operations in<lb />Laose Anyone in Southern Asia can<lb />read about our activities if they<lb />buy The Time of India or any news-<lb />paper published in Hong Kong. The<lb />only ones who don't know abou¥<lb />what we are doing is the American<lb />publice<lb /><lb />The present administration has<lb />used censorship to cover up its<lb />escalation in Southeast Asiae With<lb />two token withdrawals of US troops<lb />from South Vietnam, Nixon has been<lb />able to fool many into believing<lb />that he is dis engaging from South-<lb />east Asia, while in reality he has<lb />been escalating in Laos in order<lb />to pressure the North Vietnamese.<lb /><lb />The stalemate in the Laotian<lb />war was upset last summer when US<lb />financed and CIA directed Meo gue-<lb />rillas pushed the Pathet Lao and<lb />North Vietnamese out of the Plain<lb />of Jarse Since then Laotian pea-<lb />sants have been evacuated in order<lb />to set up free fire zones. Air<lb />combat support missions are at the<lb />same intensity as the air war once<lb />was over North Vietname<lb /><lb />The credibility gap of the<lb />Johnson administration has been<lb />embraced by the Nixon regimee The<lb />public's right to know has been<lb />subverted and prostituted.<lb /><lb />GITs UNITED Ist Annniversary - Free Poster on Back<lb /><lb />began in<lb />with<lb /><lb />Lr li Ws<lb /><lb />4<lb /><lb />Free to Servicemen<lb /><lb />COURT ORDERS<lb /><lb />HE-"_--S(TBRIEN RELEASE<lb />. Halliday is a member of<lb />GeI.*s UNITED and an editor on<lb />"BRAGG BRIEFS while a subject of<lb />military repression. He was only<lb />allowed leave at Christmas and one<lb />pass to see his attorneys. WOW!<lb /><lb />Seizure<lb /><lb />On Monday, March 9th, Rich<lb />Castelli, another GI*s United<lb />member was petitioning in the<lb />training center when two MI ag-<lb />ents approached him and confis-<lb />cated his petition. They gave him<lb />a receipt but no explanation of<lb />how to get his petition returned.<lb /><lb />The same day that the peti-<lb />tions were returned to Bill and<lb />David, two MI agents visited Rich<lb />in his company and returned his<lb />petition. The<lb />other two points are not neces-<lb />sary for circulating a petition.<lb /><lb />Returned ;<lb />On March 25 Sp/4 William Carothers<lb />a GIs United member was transferred<lb />out of his unit the 612th Qm Co<lb />where he was a parachute rigger<lb />to the 546th Trans Co to be trained<lb />as a truck driver. This was done<lb />even though Sp/4 Carothers has<lb />slightly over one month left in the<lb />Army.After a visit to the 12th<lb />Support Brigade IG he found out that<lb />the order had come from Col Wurley,<lb />the Brigade Commander. Col Murley<lb />felt that Sp/+ Carothers was a pot-<lb />ential threat as he got nearer his<lb />ETS day because of his affiliation<lb />with GIs United. Col Murley refused<lb />to put his thoughts in writing and<lb />the next day Sp/4 Carothers was rete<lb />urned to the %12th.<lb /><lb />Transfer<lb /><lb />Congratulations to the 30lst<lb />ASA Battalion for solving an-<lb />other of its "problems" in the<lb />usual manner. The offical<lb />reason for the transfer and the<lb />loss of his security clearence<lb />was not given.<lb /><lb />This type of repression wil]<lb />Jast only as long as you allow<lb />ite The fact is, it is nearly im-<lb />possible to have your security<lb />clearence taken awaye<lb /><lb />Another Viet<lb />Casualty<lb /><lb />/ INTEND PARTY LINE RATES",<lb /><lb />strike began soon after Cicero<lb />Fowler took over the management<lb />of the shopse The new regime be-<lb />gan by raising haircut prices<lb />from 90¢ to $13 while lowering<lb />the barbers cut on each haircut<lb />from 65¢ to 60¢- The barbers*<lb />response to the exploitative<lb />measures was not long in cominge<lb /><lb />It seems though that there<lb />are few soldiers getting shaggy<lb />around the earse Why? Because on<lb />military pay either a soldier<lb />gets his haircut on post or does<lb />not get one at all since he canTt<lb />afford a haircut off post. Regu-<lb />lations eliminate the second al-<lb />ternative thereby forcing the GI<lb />to assist in breaking the strike<lb />by getting haircuts from the scab<lb />barbers brought in by Fowler.<lb /><lb />The Army has never felt any a-<lb />version to strikebreaking and<lb />through post regulations and a<lb />policy of "benign neglect" it has<lb />provided valuable assistance to<lb />the concessionaire in his attempt<lb />to destroy Local 844 of the Bar-<lb />bers Union on Ft Bragg<lb /><lb />LTC Wattendorf, the PX officer;<lb />claims the Army is not taking any<lb />sides, that it only odesires to<lb />see labor peacee But it is easy<lb />to see just where the Army standse<lb />It condones Fowler's use of "oyel-<lb />low dog" contracts, but does not<lb />allow the union to distribute<lb />leaflets on post explaining its<lb />position. Fowler can hire strike<lb />breakers and scabs, but the union<lb />can't picket in front of the bar-<lb />ber shops or anywhere else on<lb />post for that matter.<lb /><lb />For soldiers who can't get off<lb />post there is little way for them<lb />to know there is a strike foing<lb />one. Anybody see an article in<lb />the Pararlide or Veritas about<lb />the strike?<lb /><lb />The Army claims that the dis-<lb />pute is between Fowler and the<lb />union, and that the Army is not<lb />involved. It is involved in this<lb />strike in the same way that it is<lb />involved in the California table<lb />srane boycott and the recent mail<lb />strikee "<lb /></p>

The social order is founded<lb />on a very small number of very large corpora-<lb />tionse The managers and owners of these corpor-<lb />ations form an elite class dictatorshipe The<lb />goals and policies of our society are just vari-<lb />ations on those necessary for the businessmen,<lb /><lb />who control the economy, culture, and government<lb />of the United States...<lb /><lb />oe Py a8 %,'.° eee." 8 08 ¢,'o. @ 6 ste ,<lb />ose 4 Sf ate ROY ee 0¢ eee se G Se<lb />aie 9, *0 ~ / T ed . * * Ose T vA T .<lb />ie eee ons. . y 7,9 4<lb />oe of Xx AC oh 8 OOg a ¢ Or ope G+,<lb />weeiinTd, . @ * oe oof we Ce .9 eee p<lb />; ~ 4, T - oe e*s ee<lb />,<lb /><lb />" "_""_"_" " - eed "-"-<lb /><lb />a EOLA LOOT OD OFDM<lb /><lb />a et<lb /><lb />ing militarism and get us involved in Vietnam and<lb />many other conflicts. At every turn the govern-<lb />ment has served the interests of capitalists and<lb />hurt the interests of the people.<lb /><lb />The war in Vietnam, in connection with the<lb />black movement, has resulted in an uprising of<lb />the people which grows stronger every day. The<lb />veneer of liberal legality is stripped away and<lb />the class nature of the government is exposed.<lb /><lb />We see our rulers go to ever more repressive<lb /><lb />measures,T attempting to smash the popular drive<lb />for peac® and ecomomic and political democracy.<lb /><lb />Why Vietnam?<lb /><lb />The government must try to put down the move-<lb />ment because the survial of capitalism depends<lb />on imperialism. Where the peace movement and the<lb />Civil rights movement realized that war and rac-<lb />ism were not accidents but policies of the ruling<lb />class they became one movement demanding one<lb />thing - POWER TO THE PEOPLE!<lb /><lb />The war in Vietnam and Laos is being fought to<lb />protect the imperialists. It was easy for them<lb />to start this war without popular consent because<lb />of the militarism and the oarms race which has<lb />been the foundation of their profits since the<lb />Second World War.<lb /><lb />The UeS.e got involved in Vietnam after W.W.II<lb /><lb />Their goals are to make their businesses ever<lb />larger, richer, and more powerful. Their policy<lb />is to attain this goal by exploiting the people<lb />of the world in every way and in any degree pos-<lb />Sible - what they call minimizing cost and max-<lb />imizing profitse<lb /><lb />The name for this policy is imperialism. At<lb />home this struggle for capitalist survival takes<lb />such forms as exploitation of wage earners, rac-<lb />ism and male supremacy, militarism, thought con-<lb />trol, political repression, cheating consumers,<lb />waste of natural resources, and pollutione A-<lb />broad imperialism means gobbling up natural re-<lb />sources and investments, exploiting "cheap for-<lb />eign labor", fighting for control of foreign<lb />markets, and forever waging war to protect in-<lb />vestments from other capitalist countries and<lb />the countries being robbed.<lb /><lb />To do all this the imperialists must control<lb />the people of the world. They do so by setting<lb />up puppet governments=- dictatorships abroad and<lb />phony democrocies at home.<lb /><lb />Politics in*capitalist society takes a lot of<lb />moneys The rich thus control the political sys- .<lb />teme Besides controling the politicians they<lb />control the media for political education -<lb />schools, newspapers, radio and television. To<lb />fool the. people they use the jingoism of super-<lb />patriotism, racism,, and red - baiting. But the<lb />laws that get passed are the laws the ruling<lb />class wants.<lb /><lb />In the last twenty years this has become clearT<lb /><lb />as we have seen the government cheat thepoor,<lb />undercut the blacks, waste money on ever increas-~<lb /><lb />et Ph gy a wats<lb />es a ir AP Ot a<lb />""_""<lb /><lb />gaa a Oe AO MILLIE Wr a a <lb /><lb />by supporting the colonial ambitions of France.<lb />The UeSe has stayed in Vietnam since the French<lb />defeat because of the U.-S. imperialist's neo-<lb />colonial ambitionse Military intervention war<lb />begen in order to sabatoge the democratic process<lb />in Vietname The ruling class knew, as Eisenhower<lb />admitted in a speech in 19§6, that the vast ma-<lb />jority of the people in southern Vietnam would<lb />vote to be reunited with the Democratic Republic<lb />of Vietnam under Ho Chi Minh. Besides removing<lb />an area from imperialist exploitation this would<lb />also be a major political defeat since the capit-<lb />alist ideology says no people would ever democra-<lb />tically elect a communist government.<lb /><lb />The Vietnamese freedom fighters are waging a<lb />war of national liberation, like other third world<lb />countires Vietnam is under-developed because of<lb />imperialisme Much of the wealth that could be<lb />invested goes into the bank accounts of the im-<lb />perialistse Moreover, these countries are de-<lb />liberately kept weak and divided so that the<lb />wealth will continue to go to the imperialists.<lb /><lb />All the people of the world including us cit-<lb />izens of the capitalist countries are victums of<lb />the imperialist system. <lb />April 1970<lb /><lb />must learn to see through their leis, we must<lb />unite to bring them down. The war is being ;<lb />fought to protect the economic interests of the<lb />capitalists. But every gain for them is a loss<lb />for use They tell us we're fighting to protect<lb />the freedom of the Vietnamese, but we support<lb />dictators. They tell us its a war for human dig-<lb />nity and yet it is based on and breeds blatant<lb />racism. Would My Lai have happened if instead of<lb />being "little Slanty-eyed gooks the people of<lb />Vietnam were white Europeans? Racisim is a dead-<lb />ly enemy of our interests. The white supremecy<lb />used to make us hate the Vietnamese and keep us<lb />divided is also used to keep us divided at home<lb /><lb />Racism<lb /><lb />The war in Vietnam is a racist ware But then,<lb />the U-eS.- is a racist country. Racism, as we know<lb />it, is a product of a class society with a profit<lb />economye It was created and sustained by those<lb /><lb />who profit from cheap labor and a divided people -<lb /><lb />the capitlists. Racial prejudice and discrimina-<lb />tion are profitable because they lower wages, di-<lb />vides the people, divert our attention and allow<lb /><lb />members of the dominant race to feel superior evan<lb /><lb />when they are bad off.<lb /><lb />Racism is a result of imperialism. The Indians<lb /><lb />and spanish-speaking peoples are national minor-<lb />ities because white people stole their lands.<lb />Blacks are a national minority because whites<lb />Stole them just like any other onatural resource"<lb />of Africa.<lb /><lb />Racism continues because of the established<lb />Systeme It is difficult even under the best con-<lb />ditions for individuals to destroy pre judices<lb />they acquired as children. But it is impossible<lb />to destroy them in a class society which is based<lb />on the acceptance of inequality, which is racist<lb />in its basic structure, which breeds the fear<lb />and frustrations on which racism feeds, and<lb />which offers petty rewards to the people of the<lb /><lb />dominant groups for giving in to the rest of th<lb />pressures. |<lb /><lb />The movement for social, economic, and polit-<lb />ical power for the national minorities is the<lb />most advanced part of the progressive movements.<lb />The minorities are in the same situation as other<lb />third-world peoples in Asia, Africa, and South<lb />Americae Neo-colonialism and racism are their<lb />enemies. The end of racism can come only with<lb />black power, brown power, yellow power, and red<lb />powere Equality and human dignity will exist<lb /><lb />only when all peoples can meet as real equals.<lb />This means that the national minorities must<lb /><lb />have the same control over their economies, soc-<lb />ieties, politics, and cultures that white people,<lb />aS a group, have over theirs.<lb /><lb />Because the leading elements in the black<lb />struggle have reached these conclusions they have<lb /><lb />come out against the imperialists. Like the Viet-<lb /><lb />namese they too are fighting the battles for<lb /><lb />white Americans freedom and receiving the bulk of<lb /><lb />the repressione None of us shall be free until<lb />we unite against the racism that keeps us dis-<lb />united in the face of our common enemv.<lb /><lb />Democracy in the Army<lb /><lb />The Armed Forces of the U.S- have only one<lb />purpose - the protection of established business<lb />interests and the accumulation of new markets and<lb />investment opportunitiese The form of the U.S.<lb />Army is derived not from military necessity but<lb /><lb />from socio-economic necessity. The army is a cor-<lb /><lb />rupt, authoritarian caste system because our soce<lb />iety is one too. No other form of organization<lb />could hold men in line for purposes that have<lb />nothing positive to contribute to their lives.<lb />Unquestioning obedience to osuperiors is neces-<lb />Sary only because a soldier who questioned what<lb />our army is doing would not be a good tool of<lb />imperialism.<lb /><lb />Our leaders know this is true. After W.W. II<lb />democratic forms of army organization were im-<lb />Dosed on Japan and Germanye The U.S. imperial-<lb />ists kept theirs organized along the old Prussian<lb />linese We wonder why?<lb /><lb />We want the U.eS. to be a truly democratic and<lb />peace-loving country. If world imperialism where<lb />ended no country would need a large armye But if<lb />we have an army then we would want it to be a<lb /><lb />BRAGG BRIEFS<lb /><lb />KINSTON, N. C. seme ie<lb /><lb />democratic one. An arm$ that exists solely to<lb />answer the real needs of the people would be able<lb />to function without authoritarian control and the<lb />absurd regimentation found in our armiese Such<lb />an army would be under the careful control of the.<lb />people as a whole where recruitment is truly<lb />voluntary and where a soldier can quit at will.<lb />Further, in such an army enlisted men would have<lb />a strong control over the selection of officers<lb />and NCO*s and the regulation of day to day life.<lb />Finally, in such an army the political and social<lb />rights of soldiers would be strictly protected.<lb /><lb />If we are going to do political work, to devel-<lb />op ourselves and our movement we must defend our<lb />human and democratic rightse While the constitu-.<lb />tion as a whole serves only to underwrite the<lb />power of the ruling class, the Bill of Rights it<lb />contains has traditionally served as a basis for<lb />defense of the rights of dissenters.<lb /><lb />We must therefore resist any attempt to take<lb />away the rights allowed use Further we must<lb />fight for our oconstitutional rights" to freedom<lb />of the press, speech, and assemblye Since pol-<lb />itical involvement by the people around our own<lb />issues is a deep threat to imperialism, our<lb />struggle for our rights in the army is a direct<lb />attack on imperialism itself.<lb /><lb />Part of this struggle is to unite in defense<lb />of those caught up in the repressive apparatus<lb />of the army and the civilian government.<lb /><lb />Free All Political Prisoners<lb /><lb />This is particularly important for GeI.~s<lb />since every dissenting GeI. is a political pris-<lb />onere Either drafted or recruited under threat<lb />of the draft, into an army ~he can't quit, the<lb />soldier is a prisoner of the statee We must<lb />fight political oppression both to protect move=<lb />ment people and to fight for our own rightse<lb /><lb />GITs UNITED<lb /><lb />Gel.*s United at Fort Bragg is an organization<lb />of active duty G.I.*s who are part of the world<lb />wide progressive movement. For a start, you can a-<lb />void emulating your elders and<lb />keep an eye out for the type of<lb />activities we've been discussing.<lb />Do a little detective work, fer-=<lb />ret out the evidence, get the<lb />facts down cold, then hang the<lb />SOB*se A casual, well-documented<lb />note to the IG (preferably a civ-<lb />ilian representative thereof)<lb />would do for a starte Now, let us<lb />guess what your thinking: "Sure,<lb />I'm really going to turn them in<lb />to the IG and get my ass ina<lb />jame Well, you don*t have to set:<lb />in a jam if you use a little dis-<lb />cretion and subterfugee (1) Hang<lb />onto the lethal information until<lb />youfre about to ETS, then drop it<lb />by the IG while you're clearing<lb />poste (2) Write your congressman<lb />or, better yet, find a guy from<lb />Arkansas and get him to write<lb />Fulbright. (3) If you can*t wait<lb />to see the fur fly and you aren't<lb />short enoush to try the first<lb />suggestion, get a buddy who is<lb />short to drop in the complaint or<lb />contact GI*s UNITED (we'll be<lb />glad to help). (4) Write an an-<lb />onymous letter to the guilty par-<lb />ty and threaten to spill the<lb />beans; that should be good for a<lb />few clandestine sweat beads on<lb />his brows<lb /><lb />At any rate, don't let them<lb />get by with ite The guys mention=<lb />ed in our examples certainly are<lb />not going to, and if they guess<lb />who they are, they'd better start<lb />Sweating, because this is a pub-<lb />lic notice that their number is<lb />UPe<lb /><lb />Whatever you do, man, when you<lb />sev the goods, cause a hassle!<lb />Just think of all the ulcers that<lb />will invade those brass stomachs<lb />when the bigwigs learn that every<lb />GI at Bragg is making like a<lb />snoope Needless to say, this ep-<lb />istle isn*t aimed at honest of-<lb />ficers and NCO*s, but there are<lb />enough dishonest ones to make<lb />things on the American system<lb />and budgete Okay, soldier, you're<lb />sworn to uphold the Constitution,<lb />So set to ite Just think how much<lb />easier it will be to breath down<lb />below if you car clean the scum<lb />off the ton of the barrele<lb /><lb />Page 6<lb /><lb />Military Court of Appeals Rules<lb /><lb />Against Priest: Trial Date Set<lb /><lb />On March 13th, the US Court of<lb />Military Appeals upheld the right<lb />of a commanding officer to over-<lb />rule a decision of a military<lb />judgee The decision centered on<lb />whether or not the Commandant of<lb />the Nava]. District of Washington<lb />applied improper influence on the<lb />court-martial judge in the case<lb />of anti-war sailor Roger Priest<lb />who faces court-martial because<lb />of statements he made in his ser-<lb />vicemen*s newsletter "OM".<lb /><lb />The court-martial proceedings<lb />were stopped on December 8th when<lb />Priest appealed to the highest<lb />military court to prevent prose-<lb />cution on two charges which had<lb />been dismissed by military judge<lb />CPT Be Raymond Perkins but were<lb />later reinstated after the con-<lb />vening authority, Rear Adm George<lb />P Koch, ordered the judge to re-<lb />consider his decisione Priest's<lb />lawyers charged that the admiralT<lb />action was a ogross usurpation of<lb />the authority of the military<lb />judge, an unpardonable interfer-<lb />ence in the course of the pro-<lb />ceedings and a denial of due pro-<lb />cess of law." They asked that the<lb />two charges alleging that Priest<lb />solicited servicemen to desert<lb />and commit sedition be again<lb />droppede Though the court's de-<lb />cision refuted the defense law-<lb />yer*s position, it did acknow-<lb />ledge that ocertain anomalies in<lb />military practice exist in com-<lb />parison with the procedures in .<lb />the Federal civilian courts, but,<lb />says the court, " a difference of<lb />procedure is not tantamount to a<lb />due process defecte"<lb /><lb />Priest, the first serviceman to<lb />face court-martial for statements<lb />made in an anti-war newsletter, |<lb />will now stand trial in Washington<lb />on April 14th.<lb /><lb />In a final pre-trial hearing on<lb />March 20th Judge Perkins denied<lb /><lb />all motions by the defense, includ-<lb /><lb />ing a request that correspondence<lb />between I.Mendel Rivers and the<lb />Pentagon be subpcened, letters<lb />which plainly indicate that the<lb />House Armed Services Chairman ap-<lb />plied improper influence on the<lb />Navy in the casee<lb /><lb />Priest is also charged with mak-<lb /><lb />ing statements advising and urging<lb />insubordination, disloyalty, and<lb />refusal of duty by members of the<lb />Armed Forces and making statements<lb />disloyal to the United Statese He<lb />faces a maximum punishment of 39<lb />years in prisone<lb /><lb />©1967 Mi MGHTS OeseevED<lb /><lb />ze. ele. eit):<lb /></p>

Most of our rivers and<lb />lakes have water which is so full<lb />of industrial filth and sewage<lb />that the fish and other life in<lb />them are dying, and our air is so<lb />full of pollutants from automo-<lb />biles and factory smoke that it<lb />is estimated that within a few<lb />years some people in large cities<lb />(mainly infants, the sick and<lb />elderly) will begin to die from<lb />breathing Ite<lb /><lb />We know how to stop this kind<lb />of thing - filter the air and<lb />purify all water before returning<lb />it to the rivers and lakes. It is<lb />even possible to build a virtu-<lb />ally smog-free car enginee But<lb />these things are not being done.<lb />Why?<lb /><lb />The filters and other devices<lb />needed to purify man-made wastes<lb />cost money. The businessmen whose<lb />factories and cars pollute the<lb />environment won't install these<lb />devices because it is not profit-<lb />able for them to do soe Because<lb />doing these things might cut into<lb />their exhorbitant profits or<lb />weaken their competitive position<lb />in the market, the businessmen do<lb />not do them, and all of us suffer<lb />from irritated eyes and noseSs»<lb />higher cancer rates, and fewer<lb />places to swim or fish in clean<lb />watere The profit makers put<lb />their selfish interests above the<lb />common good of all the peoplee<lb /><lb />One might suggest passing laws<lb />to force the companies to clean<lb />the air and water they uS@,e This<lb />would probably work, if the laws<lb />could be passed and enforcede<lb />But can they be? The businessmen<lb />who refuse to act responsibly to-<lb />ward our environment are the same<lb />ones who control the legislatures.<lb />Their money is necessary for a<lb />senator or congressman to pay for<lb />his election costs - naturally he<lb />is going to defer to their inter-<lb />ests. The companies also in-<lb />fluence legislation by means of<lb /><lb />the powerful lobbies they main-<lb />tain in Washington and in the<lb />state capitolse<lb /><lb />Even if the necessary laws<lb />could be passed, there is very<lb />little hope of their being effec-<lb />tively enforced. The record of<lb />American business is one of con-<lb />stant contempt for the laws (such<lb />as those concerning price-fixing<lb />and monopoly) designed to regulate<lb />theme And when caught, how are<lb />they punished by the courts? They<lb /><lb />are given absurdly small fines<lb />which they can pay easily and us-<lb /><lb />ually a slap on the wrist and a<lb />warning not to break the law againe<lb />This is understandable, because<lb />the same politicians who serve<lb /><lb />the businessmen also appoint the<lb />judges:<lb /><lb />The only conclusion that can<lb />be drawn from the above evidence<lb />~is that the ae gdria and des-<lb />truction of ou® natural environ-<lb />ment will continuee It will con-<lb />tinue until the American people<lb />rise up and force the preedy<lb />corporations and corrupt poli-<lb />ticians to act for the common<lb />TOO e<lb /><lb />Page 7<lb />Unpopular War, USA<lb /><lb />Yes, we are in an unpopular War<lb />Since we can't understand what<lb />we are fighting for<lb /><lb />No more of this fighting we can<lb /><lb />lives. are at stake<lb />We realize this so called war on<lb />communism isnTt real<lb />Since our capitalists gain<lb />wealth while we fight and<lb />natural resources and raw ma-<lb />terials they steal<lb />We demand the fighting to cease<lb />Before more deaths and injuries<lb />increase<lb />Our people, we want brought back<lb />home where they belong<lb />Because we need them to help the<lb />struggle here along<lb />A struggle for freedom and peace<lb />Which our system does not preach<lb />Now, Every war will be unpopular<lb />to people as me<lb />Until our home in American is<lb />truly Free<lb /><lb />B.C.<lb /><lb />War to be Outlawed in Massachusetts<lb />A bill has been introduced in<lb /><lb />the Massachusettes legislature<lb />that, if passed, would make com-<lb />pliance with orders for Vietnam<lb />illegal.
