<lb />FT HOOD GIs<lb />BOYCOTT RIP-OFF<lb />ALLEY JEWELERS<lb /><lb />ItTs a street that goes by many names. You'll find<lb />it in every military town. ItTs usually a couple of<lb />blocks long.<lb /><lb />Garish, hastily constructed shops selling flashy<lb />clothes, jewelry, and skin flicks. ThereTs a pool hall,<lb />some finance companies and auto rent places, a<lb />drug store or two featuring Archie comics and<lb />Playboy, several pawnshops, an arcade of pin-ball<lb />machines and rifle ranges.<lb /><lb />Gls call it Rip-Off Alley. In Killeen, Texas, the<lb />town closest to the Army huge military installation<lb />of Fort Hood, itTs Avenue D. And right smack in<lb />the middie of Ave. D is Tyrrell Jewellers Inc., a<lb />world-wide jewelry army base spread ~round the<lb />world (including Saigon)<lb /><lb />"an ex-G/ stationed at Fort Hood<lb /><lb />TyrrellTs specialty is getting Gis to buy expensive<lb />pieces of jewelry for the girl back home, whether<lb />it's mom or a girl friend. They do a fast trade in<lb />engagement rings and a thing called the Golden<lb />Clover Pin"an expensive diamond pin sold as a gift<lb />to mother.<lb /><lb />TyrrellTs gives each new salesman a 20 page<lb />manual that includes detailed sales pitches, written<lb />out word for word that have to be memorized. Here<lb />is part of one pitch:<lb /><lb />Bill, may | ask you a question before you leave?<lb />What would you do to any man who insulted your<lb />mother? Before you start sounding off, remember:<lb />indifference and neglect can hurt a woman worse<lb />than cruel words.<lb /><lb />Now tell me how long has it been since you did<lb />something nice, | mean really nice for your mother?<lb />Not on her birthday, or MotherTs Day, or Christmas<lb />or some other big holiday, but just out of the clear<lb />blue sky, when did you do something extra nice to<lb />say, ~Mom, | love you.T<lb /><lb />(Pause a moment to give your prospect a chance<lb />to digest this question, but not long enough for<lb />him to raise any defenses. )<lb /><lb />If you're like most fellows, Bill, you're always<lb /><lb />intending to probably do something, but you never<lb />quite get around to it. Bill, we have something here<lb />that in one moment will express to your mother all<lb />the love that is in your heart. (Keep box top closed,<lb /><lb />but tap it significantly with one finger. Speak<lb />Slowly and reverently.)<lb /><lb />If this hasnTt made you sick, check out the next<lb />one:<lb /><lb />The salesman tells a prospect that he has just<lb />talked to another young man who was buying a<lb />spray of orchids for his motherTs coffin. The sales-<lb />man cautions him: ~DonTt wait until your mom is in<lb />her coffin. Honor the living, not the dead. With this<lb />pin your mother will always have you with her.T<lb /><lb />TyrrellTs honors the dead by keeping an ~honor rollT<lb />of Gls killed in Vietnam before they had paid off<lb />their bills to Tyrrells.<lb /><lb />This spring, brothers stationed at Ft. Hood, Kil-<lb />leen, Texas, decided to blow the whistle on Tyrrell.<lb /><lb />At the Armed Forces Day demonstration May 15,<lb />the Killeen Spring Offensive Committee moved<lb /><lb />for a Gl-civilian boycott of TyrrellTs. They made<lb />four demands:<lb /><lb />"stop sidewalk soliciting and other high pressure<lb />sales techniques.<lb /><lb />"stop exploiting GI homesickness<lb /><lb />"end Army intervention and cooperation in pay-<lb /><lb />ments; the Army deducts the money Gis owe<lb />TyrrellTs ffom their paychecks.<lb />"remove the honor roll<lb /><lb />They began the boycott with leafletting in front<lb />of the store a few days before the monthly payday<lb />weekend at the end of May. TyrrellTs owners,<lb />pissed off since they had only one sale that week-<lb />end, swore out arrest warrants against two women<lb />who work at the GI coffeehouse there called the<lb />Oleo Strut. Then, that night, Gls and friends set up<lb />a picket line in front of the jewelry store.. The<lb />picketline, watched closely by Killeen pigs, contin-<lb />ued the entire weekend and not one sale was made.<lb /><lb />By May 31, KilleenTs business cats were uptight.<lb />Rumors began going around that the boycott was<lb />going to grow, expand and shut down the whole<lb />town. When the picket line started again the next<lb />day, the pigs moved in and without warning ar-<lb />rested everyone on the line"8 Gls and 2 friends.<lb />Four of the Gls were Nam vets. All were held over-<lb />night and were charged the following morning with<lb />parading without a permit and participating in an<lb />illegal secondary boycott. Bail was set at $2200, but<lb /><lb />later knocked down to $600. Within a day, all were<lb />out of the can.<lb /><lb />During one -conversation with the mayor, city<lb />manager and city council, the Oleo Strut people<lb />found out that the ten were busted after Mayor<lb />Lindley called the major of Wrightstown, New Jer-<lb />sey, near Ft. Dix, where a similar boycott happened<lb />some time ago. The Wrightstown mayor said they<lb />had ~closed the town down...T Mayor Lindley<lb />wanted to make sure that Killeen stayed open. The<lb />mayor reminded the coffeehouse staff of ~what<lb />happened in WrightstownT, where a similar coffee-<lb />house was shot into and later bombed.<lb /><lb />Local business owners are trying to fight the boy-<lb />cott. One guy tried to file a complaint for violation<lb />of a local noise ordinance. A local Baptist minister<lb />and gun shop owner even started a ~Fed Up With<lb />the Oleo StrutT campaign.<lb /><lb />But outside support has also surfaced. The Texas<lb />AFL-CIO has offered legal help, since the secondary<lb />boycott law has been used against Texas unions.<lb />On June 30, a nationwide boycott of TyrrellTs<lb />began. In Killeen, over 100 people marched, daring<lb />local police to bust them again. They didnTt. The<lb />next day, fewer pickets kept the store closed. They<lb />are now open only a few hours a day, and business<lb />is terrible. San Francisco and Seaside, California,<lb />and Fort Bragg, North Carolina stores have also<lb />been picketed with great results. There'll be more<lb />on this story as the boycott builds.<lb /><lb />NYG BREAKDOWN<lb /><lb />(New York, June 7) - On the morning of June 7,<lb />this is what New York City looked like: all but two<lb />of the 29 drawbridges connecting the five borroughs<lb />were locked open. Traffic was backed up on all<lb />major routes for miles. And heavy trucks blocked<lb />strategic access routes.<lb /><lb />These actions were organized by hundreds of<lb />bridge tenders and other city workers who've been<lb />fighting for months for the same kinds of salaries<lb />and pension benefits that cops and firemen are<lb />already getting. It just so happens that most of the<lb />cops and firemen are white. And at least 35% of the<lb />bridge tenders and sanitation workers are black and<lb />Puerto Rican. The New York state legislature ap-<lb />proved a fair contract for cops and firemen, and then<lb />refused to do the same for District 37 of the Ameri-<lb />can Federation of State, County and Municipal Em-<lb />ployees (AFSCME).<lb /><lb />~Governor Rockefeller needs to be reminded that<lb />we are made of sterner stuff than the people of<lb /><lb />Czechoslovakia and Austria who caved in so easily<lb />to Hitler three decades ago,T said one union militant.<lb /><lb />One of Rockefellers politicians in Albany, the<lb />state capital, hit the nail on the head: ~This has got<lb /><lb />to stop. Government cannot exist in a state of<lb />anarchy.T<lb /><lb />Lindsay called the strike ~immoral, illegal, out-<lb />rageous and offensive to the public interest.T But in<lb />fact, the strike was selectively aimed at disrupting<lb />suburban commuters who for years have used city<lb />services without ever having to pay for them since<lb />they live outside its tax borders. The people who<lb />live in New York, in the inner city, were not affected<lb />since subways ran on schedule. Also, one of the two<lb />bridges left open was the one linking Welfare Island<lb />(a large hospital site) to Manhattan proper.<lb /><lb />~Unlike Rockefeller,T said one of the bridgeten-<lb /><lb />ders, ~we do not wage war on the sick and infirm.T<lb />~This is auerrilla warfare aaaineat the rich Renublican<lb /><lb />commuters, said a Teamster spokesman. ~We'll<lb />have to study Mao...use hit and run tactics. ItTs not<lb />just the pension. New York is an occupied city and<lb /><lb />we have to fight back...WeTre with the poor, the<lb />blacks, and Puerto Ricans.T<lb /><lb />The beauty of these actions is that these city<lb />workers knew that without them, the city would<lb />stop working. Without the repair and maintenance<lb />workers of the Dept of Water Resources, who would<lb />make the water flow? Without the incinerator op-<lb />erators, who would burn the garbage?<lb /><lb />Like the city workers who shut down New York,<lb />your power comes from the beastTs dependence on<lb />you. Without flight maintenance crews, planes donTt<lb />fly. Without clerks to move paper, orders donTt get<lb />cut and materiel won't get shipped. This is it. With-<lb /><lb />out the beast we can do everything. Without us, the<lb />beast can do nothing. O<lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />ASSAULT ON COMMANDING OFFICER OKAY!<lb />Washington (June) - The Court of Military Appeals<lb />has dismissed charges against a Marine Corps pvt<lb />who KOTd his CO. The officer accused Pvt Daniel<lb />Struckman of being a coward with ~a streak of yel-<lb />low down his backT and asked him ~what he would<lb />like.T Dan said heTd ~like to see the Marine Corps flat<lb />on its back with its heels in the air.T The officer got<lb />very excited, and challenged Dan to try it with him.<lb />Dan jumped at the invitation, and punched him out.<lb />The court ruled that the officer, by his words and<lb />actions, abandoned his position and rank. And so<lb />when Dan punched out his CO, he just knocked out<lb />someone who was asking for it. If you try the same<lb />thing, the case to refer to is: US v. When asked about the decision he said, ~I'd<lb />rather be in jail than sell out the poor black people<lb />and be a rich Negro. I'll be happy to be in jail.<lb />Everybody can see me. ITm a Muslim. ITm black. I'm<lb />helping the world wake up. If it means | have to<lb />suffer to help open up eyes, that means more to me<lb />than gold.T About his boxing, he said, ~ITm thinking<lb />about all those people in every ghetto in every city<lb />in the USA. ITm out to whup all the hypocrites in<lb />the power structure. ITm fighting here for my free-<lb />dom and carrying the hope of my 30 million black<lb />people here, and thatTs what my mission is.T (LNS)<lb /><lb />CHU LAI ANTIWAR RALLY ON JULY 4<lb />Vietnam (July) - On Independence Day, guys at<lb />Chu Lai held an antiwar rally on the beach, daring<lb />the CG to bust them. After getting ahold of a leaflet<lb />announcing the rally, the CG warned people that<lb />the rally was illegal, and that participants would be<lb />arrested. Not only did guys go ahead with the rally,<lb />but they held it right next to the officersT July 4th<lb />program. The 75th Rangers were put on alert. Mysteriously, the story never ran in<lb /><lb />the papers, on the radio, or over television (GSB)<lb /><lb />POISONING THE KIDDIES<lb />New York (July) - The ~Washington PostT recently<lb />printed this gem on J. He donates these delectables<lb />to orphanages and other institutions.T (LNS)<lb /><lb />AIRMEN MARCH 40 MILES THROUGH DESERT<lb />TO PROTEST THE WAR<lb /><lb />Mountain Home AFB, Idaho (August) - During the<lb />first weekend in August, a group of airmen, led by<lb />the grandson of one of the founders of the biggest<lb />construction companies in Indochina, marched 40<lb />miles thru the desert to protest the ~genocide being<lb />conducted by the US Air Force in Southeast Asia.T<lb />Air Force Capt. The<lb />march route stretches from Mountain Home AFB to<lb />the MKBR hq in Boise. The company president, Bert<lb />Perkins, said the company considered It an ~obliga-<lb />tion and duty to respond to requests of the govern-<lb />ment.T So did Alfred Krupp, a Nazi war industrialist<lb />and he was found guilty of war crimes at Nurem-<lb />burg. They are also being<lb />charged with assault on an officer and riot, and<lb /><lb />Priest is also being charged with arson.<lb />The riot involved 50 people. Harvey, a black man,<lb /><lb />and Pirest, who is white, are the only ones being<lb />charged.<lb /><lb />The uprising began when a prisoner in ~CT com-<lb />pound, the segregated compound of the stockade,<lb />was denied medical attention. The man _ hadn't<lb />eaten for several days, and had been reportedly<lb />beaten by guards. As the manTs condition worsened,<lb />other prisoners in ~CT compound began banging on<lb />the walis in hopes of calling attention to the situa-<lb />tion. They were ignored, and many of the men gave<lb />up and went to bed.<lb /><lb />Shortly afterwards, they were awakened abruptly<lb />to discover that the building was on fire. About 100<lb />MPs were brought in to smash the uprising which<lb />now included C,D, and E compounds.<lb /><lb />The brass tried to pass the rebellion off as a<lb />racial disturbance, but it wasnTt. According to<lb />those who participated, it was a rebellion against<lb />stockade conditions. Some of the grievances were:<lb />85% of the prison is non-white, while less than 10%<lb />of the guards were non-white; most of the prisoners<lb />in segregated are non-white; prisoners are con-<lb />stantly harassed and goaded; black inmates are not<lb />allowed to exchange the clenched fist salute; racial<lb />slurs are used against the inmates; medical atten-<lb />tion is inadequate; cell conditions are unsanitary;<lb />solitary confinement is cruel and unusual punish-<lb />ment (5x8 cells, poor food, etc.)<lb /><lb />Harvey and Priest have been in solitary since July<lb />7. Two captives of the Navy, Michael<lb />Gleaves and Dennis Rupert, were both busted<lb />recently and charged with Article 134 (promoting<lb />disloyalty) and Article 92 (failure to obey a lawful<lb />order). Both charges came down cause they were<lb />supposedly passing out underground papers and<lb />pocket guides to Gi rights. Also, both are members<lb />of the American ServicemenTs Union (ASU). On the<lb />island today, there are so many guys refusing in-<lb />duction and evading the draft that the government<lb />canTt even begin prosecuting. The object of this terror, according to a<lb />Reserve colonel, was to ~prepare men for the kind of<lb />treatment they might expect if captured.T While<lb />captives of this Reserve unit, they were given elec-<lb />trical shocks, chained to logs, and then thrown in a<lb />deep pond. (San Francisco Chronicle)<lb /><lb />AIRMEN KEEP MARCHING IN LONDON<lb /><lb />London (June) - In early June, 300 brothers, most of<lb />them airmen, marched to the US embassy. His<lb />crime: advocating peace, independence and neu-<lb />_ trality by drafting a Peoples Peace Treaty with<lb />American students almost a year ago. Thieu has<lb />had Mam tried once already before a military court,<lb />but a civil court threw out the conviction since at<lb />that time even Thieu couldn't try a civilian in a<lb />military court. ThieuTs answer was to rewrite the<lb />Constitution. Thieu is now running against no one<lb />in the fall elections, another great victory for the<lb />great American policy of democracy for all, like it<lb />or not. To make sure that no one knows about the<lb />fraud, Thieu has arrested the editor of SaigonTs<lb />largest daily newspaper, Ngo Cong Duc (SFC).<lb /><lb />NO SANCTUARY FOR GEN. Two days before the bust, the ASU<lb />was told that Gis had overheard officers in the 2/11<lb />talking about how Bob would be ~gotten.T Bob was<lb />charged with possession and sale of both weed and<lb />heroin, even though BobTs people knew he was<lb />trying to get other guys to kick. ItTs kind of strange<lb />that theyTd charge Bob with dealing junk just as it<lb />hits the papers that the CIA and the Saigon tyrants<lb />have been pushing the shit for years. The Navy left the base entirely, and the city<lb />didnTt even want it for a zoo. According to the Sioux<lb />Treaty of 1868, unused Federal land automatically<lb />becomes Indian land again. So our friends took it<lb />to set up a village. One morning at 5am, five hours<lb />before Senator Mondale was to meet with them,<lb />their camp was broken into by 150 US marshalls,<lb />county deputies, naval reservists, and Marines.<lb /><lb />Two weeks later, the scene repeated itself in<lb />Richmond, California where 50 Indians seized an<lb />abandoned Nike missile base. Just four days earlier<lb />their village on Alcatraz Island was destroyed by<lb />federal marshalls. So the Indians took back the<lb />Nike base to set up a school and health clinic. <lb />OKINAWA -<lb /><lb />LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT<lb /><lb />The first American to visit Okinawa, a beautiful<lb />island in the chain that runs from Japan to Taiwan,<lb />came with the idea that it should be liberated from<lb />Japan, and be included as a foothold of ~our mara-<lb />time rights in the East.T This stomping militarist,<lb />Commodore Matthew Perry, soon made it clear<lb />what good times this would bring to the Okinawan<lb />people"he paraded his troops and heavy guns,<lb />charged into the kingTs palace without invitation,<lb />and demanded gifts. One of his favorites was a<lb />great temple bell, with this saying cast around it:<lb />~May the sound of this bell shatter illusory dreams,<lb />perfect the souls of mankind, and enable the king<lb />and his subjects to live so virtuously that barbarians<lb />will find no occasion to invade the kingdom.T The<lb />Okinawans were forced to present the bell to the US<lb />Naval Academy, where every year it rings out the<lb />score in the Army-Navy game.<lb /><lb />ae<lb /><lb />Since World War Il, Okinawa .has become one of<lb />the major Amerikan bases in Asia. License plates on<lb />Amerikan vehicles are dominated by the slogan<lb />~Keystone of the Pacific,T and more of the island is<lb />fenced in every year to make the keystone stronger.<lb />Every fence is plastered with signs warning, ~Re-<lb />stricted Area"US Government Property"Keep out.T<lb />The Okinawans who used to farm the land now must<lb />work as Amerikan slaves at 30 cents an hour on the<lb />base and in the houses of lifers.<lb /><lb />With the military came US business to take over<lb />the finest bays and beaches in the area for refine-<lb />ries to gas the war machine. Every day Okinawans<lb />see B-52s leave for S.E. Asia. The Okinawans live<lb />under the dictatorship of the US High Commissioner<lb />and have no say about what schemes Amerikan<lb />military planners have for their island. Okinawa is<lb />a storehouse for chemical, biological and nuclear<lb />weapons ready to be used on other Asian people.<lb /><lb />Faced with this death machine, the Okinawans<lb />continue to fight as their ancestors did against<lb />Chinese and Japanese invaders. Last December, an<lb />American officer killed an Okinawan woman with a<lb />truck and was immediately released. The people<lb />countered this outrage by burning over 80 Ameri-<lb />kan MP and pig cars. Black and white Gls at Kadena<lb />Air Base supported the demonstrations: they passed<lb />Out leaflets of support and many refused riot duty.<lb /><lb />But the brass aren't satisfied with racist attacks<lb />and oppression of Okinawans, and so run the same<lb />shit on Gls. But Gls are also fighting back, and have<lb /><lb />legal help to shove the shit back where it came from.<lb />In the past several months .. .<lb /><lb />LIFERS FREAK ON KNUCKLE-KNOCKING<lb /><lb />Lifers who donTt dig signs of solidarity, especially<lb />among black Gls, _ prohibited knuckle-knocking.<lb />On April 26, some black Gils raced through the NCO<lb />barracks, overturned chairs and broke windows to<lb />protest the order. Later about 15 brothers were<lb />ordered by a Captain and several pistol-waving MPs<lb />to disperse as they stood outside their barracks.<lb />They refused. Pvt Arnold Clark was charged with<lb />disrespect and participation in a riot. During the<lb />special court martial, the pigsT only witness on the<lb />disrespect charge was the Captain. But ClarkTs wit-<lb />ness against the charge had ETSTd, so the lawyer<lb />demanded that this witness should be returned at<lb />military expense under paragraph 115, Manual for<lb />Court Martial. The Convening Authority refused,<lb />violating the UCMJ. The judge decided that since<lb />this witness could have refuted the Captain's testi-<lb /><lb />mony, the charges should be dismissed.<lb />ARTICLE 138<lb /><lb />PFC Tony Preston filed Article 138 charges<lb />against his CO for prejudice and harrassment. The<lb />CO came back with an Article 15. Preston demanded<lb />a Special, and was put on base restriction until he<lb />was acquitted 41 days later. His lawyer filed to dis-<lb />miss charges, and argued that Preston might have<lb />taken the Article 15 if heTd known that he would<lb /><lb />have to spend 41 of a possible 60 days on restriction.<lb /><lb />Another lifer eats some of his own.<lb />SPIRIT IN THE DARK<lb /><lb />On June 24, Marine Pvt Michael Anderson was<lb />tried in General Court for allegedly threatening a<lb />Major with : ~You may be a Major tonight, but tom-<lb />Oorrow you'll be a Captain or. dead.T In the same<lb />court, he was charged with maiming a sergeant.<lb />Both of these incidents happened at night. The sgt<lb />wasn't wearing his glasses, was under the influence<lb />of medication, and later misidentified three men in<lb />a lineup. This pig was the prosecutionTs only wit-<lb />ness, while ten witnesses swore Anderson wasn't<lb />anywhere near the scene. On the threat charge,<lb />the Major was also the only witness, and testified<lb />that he heard Anderson make the threat from a<lb />group of 25-black Gls and 25 Okinawan women<lb />over 75 yards away! This middle-aged white Sou-<lb />therner stared for three solid minutes at the court<lb /><lb />recorder when he was asked to identify the accused.<lb />Despite all of these fuckups, the Judge changed<lb />the threat wording to, ~I'm going to kill that Major,T<lb />found Anderson guilty, gave him one year at hard<lb />labor a BCD, and forfeiture of all pay. He ruled not<lb />guilty on the maiming charge. If the threat charge<lb />had been tried as usual in a Special, heTd have<lb />gotten a maximum six months and maybe a BCD.<lb />So these racists shafted a black Marine with a wife<lb />and two kids, who has no education, and who pro-<lb />bably won't get back his job with US Steel.<lb /><lb />BLACK PVT STANDS WITH OKINAWANS<lb /><lb />This spring Okinawans called for a general strike,<lb />and Gls were assigned to riot duty. To many Gls,<lb />it was clear who the enemy was, as it had been clear<lb />for 43 black Gls in the 82d Airborne who refused to<lb />vamp on people in Chicago during the unDemocratic<lb />convention of 1968. Two days before the strike, Pvt<lb />Adams of 1st Special Forces Group, refused riot<lb />duty. He laid it out this way:<lb /><lb />~| didnTt want to go out and club lots of Okinawan<lb />people becuase thatTs what the Pig is doing to Black<lb />people back in the States. | feel that the Okinawan<lb />PeopleTs struggle is the same struggle as all oppres-<lb />sed (or Third World) people"against one common<lb />foe"the fascist, Amerikan military regime. |, as a<lb />member of the Third World, refuse to harm my bro-<lb />thers and sisters for these racist, unethical maniacs<lb />who cause so many people suffering. We people of a<lb />Third World frame of mind must and we will fight<lb /><lb />to the last man. We need solidarity among oppressed<lb />people.T<lb /><lb />THE KEYSTONE CRUMBLES<lb /><lb />The pigs have tried to divide the fucked-over Gis<lb />from the people of Okinawa. Riot duty for three or<lb />four days builds anger among Gls which lifers hope<lb />will drive them to keep the people down. The Oki-<lb />nawans in this jam build up their own hatreds<lb />against Gls who carry out the orders. But the split<lb />has been bridged. Now Gls join in snake-dancing<lb />demonstrations, getting high from the enthusiasm<lb />of the Okinawans. And Okinawans supported the<lb />meeting for ~Brotherhood and UnityT held by Gls<lb />to oppose Armed Forces Day on May 16. People<lb />who used to shout ~Yankee Go Home!T now shout<lb />~Antiwar Gls join us!T<lb /><lb />The keystone of the Pacific is starting to crumble,<lb />and is now the keystone of the Pacific resistance.<lb />The Okinawan people will get back their land, and<lb />everything that was ripped off by Amerika for the<lb />last hundred years. a)<lb /><lb />oHe took the wraps off our secret weapon!<lb /><lb />,<lb />4<lb />%,<lb /><lb />pit PENTAGON PAPER QUOTES<lb /><lb />small one.T<lb /><lb />~The size of the lie is a definite factor in causing it to<lb />be believed. The primitive simplicity of their minds<lb /><lb />renders them a more easy prey to a big lie than a<lb /><lb />Hitler<lb /><lb />~Listen, if you think any American official is going<lb />to tell you the truth, then youTre stupid!<lb /><lb />that? <lb />WAF SISTER REFUSES ORDERS TO THE PHILIPPINES<lb /><lb />Norma Welshams is a WAF at Travis Air Force Base in California. After two years in, she got herself<lb />a job as an x-ray technician at David Grant Medical Center, where she helped piece together guys<lb />returning from the Nam. But in June she got orderes for the Philippines, putting her in a real jam. On the<lb />one hand, she enjoys medical work. But on the other, she strongly opposes the presence of the American<lb /><lb />military in other countries.<lb /><lb />Take the Philippines. HereTs a country where 80% of the income and wealth is in the hands of less<lb />than 10% of the people, and 8% of the labor force unemployed with 25% underemployed. Three-fourths<lb />of the people who have jobs make under $600 a year. One reason they make so little is that for every dollar<lb />invested there by American businessmen, three dollars leaves. Part of the US military mission is devoted<lb />to keeping an unpopular tyrant (Ferdinand Marcos) in power, so that he, in turn, can favor American<lb />investments and make possible the rip-off of the Filippino land and people. The other main military<lb />function there is as a rear area strike base and supply depot for the war against Indochina.<lb /><lb />Norma wants nothing to do with both of those functions. She knows that by refusing orders she risks<lb />1-5 years. The following interview shows why sheTs taking that risk. By the way, Norma needs support.<lb />Do as she has done, and write her c/o Travisty, PO Box 487, Suisun City, California 94585.<lb /><lb />Travisty: How did you feel when you received<lb />notice of your assignment?<lb /><lb />Norma: I spent a great deal of time analyzing the<lb />situation in the Philippines. There are hard feel-<lb />ings toward the Americans by the Filippinos.<lb />They donTt want us there. They want us to leave<lb />and I think we should.<lb /><lb />Then I started thinking about all the other coun-<lb />tries we have military bases in and they donTt<lb />want us either. Having all those bases in all those<lb />countries looks suspicious to me and ITm sure it<lb />looks suspicious to them. The military establish-<lb />ment says we are in all those foreign countries to<lb />prevent the spread of communism, when in actual.<lb />ity we are in a better position to ~take over the<lb /><lb />worldT since we have more foreign military bases<lb />than any other country (3,401 to be exact).<lb /><lb />Travisty: The leaders of our country also tell us<lb /><lb />that we are protecting our democratic system.<lb />Do you think thatTs true?<lb /><lb />Norma: No! First of all we go over there to estab-<lb />lish military power. I think that it is not for them<lb />at all, it is for us. To protect us and help us take<lb />over the world. I donTt think that the statement<lb />~to make the world free for democracyT is right.<lb />Why is it up to us to make the world free for our<lb />brand of democracy? Why canTt people decide<lb />for themselves what kind of government they<lb />want? Certainly when American military people<lb />are being stabbed, drowned, and beaten up, it<lb />should be perfectly clear to our government that<lb /><lb />we are not wanted over there. We should get the<lb />hell out.<lb /><lb />Trav: In light of what youTve said, how do you<lb />see your role in the military? Since you are re-<lb />fusing to go to a foreign country and not trying to<lb />get out of the military, do you feel there is a need<lb />for a defensive military?<lb /><lb />Norma: ITm not sure we need a defensive military.<lb />But if we do, it is indeed the only kind we need. I<lb />cannot support one that invades other countries<lb />or intervenes in another countryTs civil war. We<lb />already have enough bombs and ships to destroy<lb />the whole world. We donTt even need a military.<lb />We just have to push some buttons. I feel bad<lb />about serving in the military in any way, but I did<lb />sign a contract. I work in the hospital and I help<lb />people, wounded men from Vietnam and little<lb />kids who break their arms. Everyone in this coun-<lb />try supports the war in some way when they pay<lb />taxes and go to work.<lb /><lb />The latest polls show that 73% of the people in<lb />this country donTt support the war, but we are<lb />still there. If we really had a democracy we would<lb />pull out. Even if there were no other facts, this<lb />alone should make us wonder if our system isnTt<lb />breaking down. Our government says we should<lb />make changes through the system, but the way<lb />our system is I donTt think we can. There is no<lb />room in our system for the drastic changes we<lb />need. We are too controlled by the military-indu-<lb />strial complex to change. The people cannot<lb />demonstrate their beliefs without the country<lb />turning into a police state. They bring out the<lb /><lb />tear gas and guns. ItTs really frightening to take<lb />a stand. But I for one cannot support it any longer.<lb /><lb />Trav: Why do you think our country does not<lb />respond to the will of the people and is so un-<lb />willing to grant them their human rights?<lb /><lb />Norma: Because they would have to put the will<lb />of the people before their own profit. That would<lb />mean better housing, better medical care for all<lb />the people, more food, more jobs, etc., instead of<lb />bigger bombs, more wars, and higher salaries for<lb />government officials. ItTs an imbalance of power.<lb /><lb />ThereTs a funny saying in our country, everyone is<lb />equal. But some people are more equal than others.<lb /><lb />Trav: What made this inequality?<lb /><lb />Norma: MONEY! The people who own big industry<lb />have the money and the power. They tell us how<lb />to think and live through advertisements. They<lb />tell us to buy this and that and we canTt live with-<lb />out all the things they tell us to buy. So most of<lb />us are so involved in the race to acquire all these<lb />things that we donTt have time to think about what<lb />we are really doing. We just consume! It seems as<lb />if that is what they want us to do. To them we are<lb />just consumers, not human beings.<lb /><lb />')<lb />%<lb /><lb />Trav: How do you see this aspect of American<lb />society being manifested in the military?<lb /><lb />Norma: In the military it is very hard not to be-<lb />come a zombie. You stifle any opposition in your-<lb />self. You just do what you are told and even stifle<lb />your thoughts. Then all of a sudden you stop and<lb />look at yourself and you say...what am I doing?<lb />What is this thing that has me so enveloped that<lb />I canTt even think anymore? ITm not even myself<lb />anymore. ITm just a robot...It makes you stop and<lb />think. They dangle the promotions over you like<lb />you dangle a carrot over a horseTs nose. If you are<lb />a good little girl or boy, do your job well and donTt<lb />make any trouble, then you will get promoted.<lb />The reason people want to get promoted is be-<lb />cause there is more money to buy more things.<lb />And you donTt have to do so many shitty details.<lb /><lb />Trav: Do you think that promotions are the only<lb /><lb />thing that keep people from standing up for their<lb />beliefs?<lb /><lb />Norma: It goes deeper I think. You are indoctri-<lb />nated and brainwashed when you first come into<lb />the service. ThatTs what basic training is all about.<lb />They want to steal your individual thoughts from<lb />you. You have to think of yourself as part of the<lb />Air Force ~missionT. ItTs implanted in you that it<lb />would mean disaster if you would ever refuse an<lb />order or do something wrong. You feel like the<lb />heavens would open up, lightning would strike<lb />you down, and the earth would swallow you. So<lb />you automatically shove all those thoughts aside<lb />before you have a chance to enact any of them.<lb />Unless you take stock of your life and what is<lb /><lb />happening to you in the military, you are still a<lb />zombie.<lb /><lb />A MARCH<lb />AT CLARK AF'B<lb /><lb />Trav: What have you done to overcome this fear?<lb /><lb />Norma: I really havenTt overcome it. I just feel it<lb />is more important for me to stand up for my be-<lb />liefs than it is for me to overlook them and do<lb />what they tell me. That would be the easier thing<lb />to do but I canTt do that. Even if I have to go to<lb />jail they wonTt break my spirit.<lb /><lb /></p>

The peace demonstration season<lb />is over but there is still a lot of stuff going on. | think in<lb />general the demonstrations had a good effect. Holy<lb />shit, is this the kind of democracy that the US is bringing<lb />to Vietnam. No wonder they donTt want us there. <lb />FT ORD RIOT<lb /><lb />VOLAR CANNED<lb /><lb />June 27, a sunny Sunday afternoon at Fort Ord,<lb />California, has to rate as one of the strangest days<lb /><lb />that base has ever seen. In what turned out to be<lb />one of their last desperate attempts to pacify 40,000<lb />pissed off Gis, base Special Services took VOLAR to<lb />heart and staged a rock concert on base. TheyTre<lb />still wondering how it turned into an insurrection.<lb /><lb />For starters, they booked in three super conserva-<lb />tive groups: Canned Heat, Southwind, and Abdulah.<lb />Then they marched several units of basic trainees<lb />into the scorching stadium, and sat them all in<lb />formation. Other Gis and friends got to sit on the<lb />grass. But no one was left to themselves. CID, Army<lb />Intelligence (or lack of it), and MPs were all over<lb />the area with .45s, walkie-talkies, and the usual<lb /><lb />garbage. Just to keep everyone jumpy, beer was<lb />made available.<lb /><lb />Canned Heat, who came on last, told the people,<lb />~You shouldn't mind going to Vietnam. That's where<lb />the best grass is.T Soon after that, a small fight<lb />broke loose. MPs, primed for action, started firing<lb />their .45s in the air, and then just moved on this<lb />group of people swinging riot clubs at anyone they<lb />could reach. One GI who was there said, ~MPs<lb />moved into the crowd to break up a fight, and<lb />started hitting all the people in the area.T<lb /><lb />When MPs started carting off just black brothers<lb />only, other brothers quickly came together. Every<lb />one started bombing MPs with wine bottles. All the<lb />time, Canned Heat played on. By the time they<lb />finished, Gls were already heading for the streets.<lb />A Greyhound bus was trashed and overturned. The<lb />drill sergeant training school was broken into and<lb />its supply building set on fire. Fire trucks were held<lb />off easily since MPs started avoiding the uprising.<lb /><lb />Later in the night, the celebration moved into<lb /><lb />the Fourth Brigade area. A clerkTs classroom building<lb /><lb />was broken into, as well as the PX and snack bar. At<lb />this point, MPs started beating on people again. A<lb />line of people who were waiting to get into the base<lb />movie theater were vamped on suddenly. As the<lb /><lb />When the uprising was written up in the big daily<lb />newspapers, it was painted as a ~racial incident,T<lb />thanks to the post information office. ItTs true that<lb />there were racial incidents all over the base on the<lb />27th (like MPs arresting only black Gls). But that<lb />somehow doesnTt explain the beautiful strength of<lb />guys of all races hammering away together at a<lb />military beast thatTs stealing the best years of their<lb />lives, and opposing people everywhere who're taking<lb />back control of their own lives, their own countries.<lb />It was best put by one white GI who said, ~Who are<lb />you trying to kid? The guy right next to me throwing<lb />rocks last night was a Brother!T<lb /><lb />Evidently, the flak from the rebellion flew as far<lb />as Washington. On June 29, Col. Ford, commander<lb />of the Basic Administration Army Course (BAAC)<lb />revealed the word: scrap VOLAR as of July 6. He<lb />held a meeting, and ordered the re-establishment<lb /><lb />fighting spread, base entertainment centers were } ~ GZ)<lb /><lb />¢-<lb /><lb />all shut down. ia"<lb />i<lb /><lb />4,<lb />a<lb /><lb />A medic at the bus station reported, ~An MP, a<lb />staff sergeant, ordered a Gi to put his hands on his<lb />head and back up against a railing. The GI obeyed<lb />the order. The MP sergeant then hit the GI in the<lb />stomach with his club, kneed him in the groin, and<lb /><lb />as the Gi doubled over, the MP hit him on the head.<lb />When the victim fell to the ground, the MP sergeant<lb /><lb />kicked him and jumped on him several times.T<lb /><lb />Another medic said at least 100 people were<lb />treated in Emergency on Sunday. A !ot of those in-<lb />juries came down cause MPs had declared ~unmar-<lb />tial lawT - beat people first, ask questions later.<lb />Since the insurrection was directed at the buildings<lb />and machinery of repression, almost all injuries<lb />happened when MPs tried defending Army property<lb />or when beserk lifers used the uprising and ~unmar-<lb />tial lawT as an excuse to beat on _ people.<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb />iN Sg<lb /><lb />of the merit system and the old hair regs, no more<lb />beer in the barracks, tighter hold on AWOLs, etc.<lb />The whole premise of VOLAR is that they can<lb />take from you years of your life, treat you like an<lb />animal, teach you to distrust everything you know<lb />and everyone you trust, but that no one will mind<lb />as long as thereTs go-go girls in the cafeteria, beer<lb />in the barracks, and a little more hair on guysT<lb />heads. When you get down to it, they think we're<lb />fools enough to want to trade iron chains for plastic<lb />ones. The uprising at Ord showed them that people<lb />iust aren't willing to settle for a more comfortable<lb />form of oppression. That's why theyTve scrapped<lb /><lb />VOLAR in Col. FordTs outfit. And thatTs why they'll<lb />scrap it elsewhere, too. Oo<lb /><lb /></p>
