<lb />BULKHEAD EDITORIAL<lb /><lb />This is the third edition of 'Bulkhead'. It's clear by now that we're here to stay.<lb />fach issue looks better than the one before, and unlike some G| papers, we haven't<lb />folded after the first issue. We're now long overdue for a critical look at ourselves.<lb /><lb />What has happened to us in the first three months is that the writing, layout,<lb />printing, and distribution of this paper has virtually been forced underground. In<lb />fact, we have faced many of the same problems with this paper that the inmates of<lb />San Quentin faced putting out their underground paper, "The Outlaw." Our civilian<lb />and GI photographers have had their film and cameras taken from them. Our active<lb />duty writers have been court-martialled for trying to get the Navy's side of the story,<lb />and our distributors have been harrassed and in some cases busted for passing out the<lb />paper. The compartment cleaner chief at NAS Alameda has even offered 24 hours<lb />liberty to anyone who turns in a brother he suspects of being associated with ~Bulkhead. '<lb /><lb />These conditions have forced us to do almost all of our newspaper work off-base.<lb />Articles are smuggled off-base, where they are typed, set on a page, and printed in<lb />secret by the people not intimidated by the military agents of the ruling class. The<lb /><lb />sai<lb /><lb />only way we'll be able to make this paper more responsive to the needs of Bay Area<lb />lors is if you work with us in putting it together. We people who put out "Bulkhead!<lb /><lb />are tuming our hate of the military dinosaur and our love for the people it oppresses<lb /><lb />into energy<lb /><lb />You see, we are bound by hate and love both. That's a bond that's<lb /><lb />hard to break. AII we want now is for more of you to share this feeling with us. The<lb />clicks, buzzes, humms, and rustlings of shuffled papers are the music of production.<lb />Our machine is like no other. Why not join us at our next ~Bulkhead! production meeting.<lb /><lb />Call 549-2172 for the time and place.<lb /><lb />We'll be the first to admit our mistakes. They include the following: (I) the<lb /><lb />~BulkheadT is not yet really a Navy paper.<lb /><lb />It's treatment of the news is still too general.<lb /><lb />(2) We have not gotten enough letters-to-the-editor. (3) Because we are forced to<lb /><lb />operate eigay we have not been in close enough contact with one or two<lb /><lb />bases here. (4<lb /><lb />particular<lb /><lb />We have not really explained our twelve point program in detail.<lb /><lb />We're sure that you're all on to many of our shortcomings. The only way we can<lb />recognize them and deal with them is if you tell us, either in person or through the<lb />mail. Remember, this is supposed to be your paper.<lb /><lb />If we were putting out a supplement to 'Navy Times', if we were putting out a<lb />sea scout monthly, we would be able to clear the paper through base authorities, sell<lb />it in the commissaries and cafetarias, and pass it out in barracks without any trouble.<lb />As long as we'd be putting out a paper which did not challenge the security, the<lb />authority, and the legitimacy of the US Navy, they would have no reason to stop us.<lb />The Navy is not fighting us because we're putting out a newspaper. They're trying to<lb />squash us because our paper and our organization are against everything they stand for.<lb /><lb />We are armed with the truth, and we are not kidding around. Their organization and<lb />their lives are built on lies, and they aren't kidding around either. For these reasons we<lb />are partially underground. We expect no mercy from their laws, their courts, or their<lb />prisons. We do not believe in asking permission to make a human revolution. We know<lb />that those who try to openly exercise their 'rights' have always been bitterly disappdnted<lb />to discover that they have all the rights in the world only until they try to exercise them.<lb /><lb />But you ask, "If you are underground, how are we going to find you ?" Our paper<lb />and our office are like the top one-tenth of an iceberg. But our strength lies underwater,<lb />in the unity of our organization both on and off base. And no seaman who has ever<lb />seen an iceberg ever forgets that it's the part of the iceberg you can't see which sinks<lb /><lb />the ship.<lb /><lb />Commie- Pinko-<lb />Prevert Blues<lb /><lb />The brass has told many people that<lb />MDM is a communist supported movement,<lb />and that much trouble can come to you<lb />for possessing this paper. Every one of<lb />those charges are outright lies.<lb /><lb />MDM is mainly a donation-supported<lb />group. We are not communists, but rather<lb />freedom fighters. They cannot legally<lb />prosecute you for being in MDM, or for<lb />reading or possessing 'Bulkhead'.<lb /><lb />MDM was organized to make a better<lb />military by making it a democracy. The<lb />brass cannot let you have democracy with-<lb />out a fight. The only true power they<lb />have over you isfear. From your first day<lb />to your last they must keen you scared,<lb />uninformed and subjugated. We are show-<lb />ing GI's that they have nothing to fear<lb />from the Pig. This strength can only come<lb />from unity and knowledge of the UCMJ.<lb /><lb />Brass all over Galifornia know the<lb />nower of MDM, and fear us. They are<lb />losing a grio on the oppressed enlisted man,<lb />and cannot legally do a thing.<lb /><lb />Many of our beoiiess were harrassed<lb />and some even brigged on totally phony<lb />charges. They only made us stronger be-<lb />cause our Brotherhood is stronger than<lb />their oppression.<lb /><lb />We cannot help more of you brothers<lb />without your aid. The oublic must be<lb />shown the military is corruot and outdated.<lb />This we cannot do without you. Remember<lb />that with us you can break the lifers'<lb />stranglehold. So ignore his idle threats.<lb /><lb />Power to the People<lb />Richard Gould<lb /><lb />FIGHT<lb /><lb />On | June 1970 at about 1500, the<lb />captain of the attack carrier USS Midway<lb />made two announcements. But we are<lb />only concerned with the one pertaining<lb />to MDM, He made it clear that the ship's<lb />officers had intercepted, opened, and<lb />read the letters intended for other members<lb />of the Midway. They had handed them<lb />over to the captain. Only after he had<lb />inspected the contents of the envelopes<lb />did the captain let them be distributed.<lb />He said we were free to read the contents<lb />and make up our own minds whether or<lb />not we agreed with the information in<lb />them. This is a constitutional right given<lb />to all citizens of the USA. Nice of him<lb />to allow us to exercise this right, wasn't<lb />it? But to this 'privilege' he added his<lb />own subtle command by saying if one had<lb />been sent to him he would hand it over<lb />to ONI and let them handle it.<lb /><lb />We also know that on 2 June 1970 he<lb />held a forum which was a real joke. He<lb />made it clear that he had unleashed the<lb />ONI dogs on MDM. He also in his own<lb /><lb />subtle way made the following accusations<lb />against MDM:<lb />|) He said the ~Bulkhead and the pam-<lb /><lb />phlet 'Military Duty, Service or Subser-<lb />vience ?' contained misinformation from<lb />sources of questionable reliability.<lb /><lb />2) Because the return address reads<lb />~Student Research Facility', the captain<lb />thought students had something to do with<lb />the paper.<lb /><lb />3) Following his ridiculous assump-<lb />tion that students were writing a GI paper<lb />he got even more lost by questioning how<lb />students could pay the cost.of the'Bulkhead'<lb /><lb />BACK!<lb /><lb />Our answer to your accusations, oh<lb />captain:<lb /><lb />1) MDM is an organization of active<lb />duty GI's. The 'Bulkhead is written by<lb />active duty Gl's. Aren't GI's a reliable<lb />source? The pamphlet was written by a<lb />newly reborn Army GI for the Student<lb />Research Facility. Isn't he a reliable<lb />source ?<lb /><lb />2) Because of ONI harrassment and<lb />brass harrassment on base, we have an<lb />office in Berkeley at 2214 Grove St. We<lb />share the office with the Student Research<lb />Facility. There are no students in MDM<lb />except students in military schools.<lb /><lb />3) We do not get any funds from Hanoi,<lb />Peking, Moscow, Cuba, or any foreign<lb />governments. We also do not receive our<lb /><lb />funds from the CIA.<lb /><lb />No, captain, the dissent is RIGHT<lb />IN THE MIDST OF YOUR OWN COM<lb />MAND. The GI's in MDM get funds from<lb />their own pockets, from ads in 'Bulkhead',<lb />from contributions we solicit from sympa-<lb />thetic civilians, and from fund raising.<lb /><lb />Food for thought: if the Nuremburg<lb />trials proved one thing, they proved that<lb />each GI is responsible for his own actions.<lb />How many German war criminals went to<lb />their deaths with these words on their lips ?<lb />oBut | was only obeying my orders. <lb />Well, it's true. Big Brother here at<lb />Tl is sneaking around, peeping through<lb />keyholes, listening at holes in the wall.<lb />Brain police are like maggots in the<lb />garbage.<lb /><lb />Last week the fascists herded every-<lb />one in barracks 209-8 over to investigat-<lb />ions for mug shots. It seems that we at<lb />MDM have the brass extremely paranoid<lb />at Tl. It seems that two brothers, Dave<lb />Chapman and Rick Gould had nine pictures<lb />taken when everyone else had only three.<lb /><lb />It also turns out that NISO (the Navy<lb />answer to the CIA) has been showing peo-<lb />ple pictures of brothers Rick and Dave and<lb />asking about their political affiliations<lb />and beliefs. Then when brother Rick was<lb />called to NISO about another man's state-<lb />ment, the Pig decided to find out first<lb />hand. Rick didn't deny or admit anything.<lb /><lb />se<lb /><lb />iT inic + a y :<lb />RINSTON, N.C.<lb /><lb />His reply to the charges and a sneakthoto<lb />of him and brother Dave was, "So?".<lb /><lb />The brass can only contro! people who<lb />fear them and are apathetic. Our brothers<lb />from MDM here at TI have no fear of the<lb />fascists because we know, that with all<lb />their power, they still fear the Movement.<lb /><lb />Brother Dave was stopped one morn-<lb />ing for not wearing socks with his uniform.<lb />That means the pig must be hiding every-<lb />where to watch us dress and do many<lb />other things.<lb /><lb />The Gestapo is everywhere, but they<lb />are useless as long as our Brothers are<lb />there. And we will always be there to<lb />protect and defend our Brothers.<lb /><lb />Power to the People<lb />signed, The Political Prisoners<lb /><lb />of Treasure Island<lb /><lb />GETTING IT TOGETHER<lb /><lb />On Friday, May 22, at about 9:30am<lb />the pigs came to 209-8 to byst 4 people<lb />for possession of weed. In f¥,ir travels<lb />they managed to kidnap 9? others. How they<lb />went about it is like reading "The Rise<lb />and Fall of the Third Reich. "<lb /><lb />While downstairs at the MAA office,<lb />someone upstairs allegedly called them<lb />~pigs'. How did they know anyone thought<lb />enough of them to waste their breath unless<lb />they were paranoid of the truth? They<lb />gathered 9 of us, everyone on the top floor,<lb />excluding the watch (how did they know he<lb />didn't do it?). When they couldn't extract<lb />a ~confessionT there, they herded us into<lb />the pigmobile, four of us, some in only T-.<lb />shirts, were forced to ride in the back of<lb />an open pick-up truck.<lb /><lb />When we arrived at the main gate, we<lb /><lb />were informed they only wanted one of us<lb />and we could stand there until 6am. It was<lb /><lb />cold and windy there, too. Then one of<lb />our brothers had his beads stolen. When he<lb /><lb />asked for a receipt he was told by some<lb />chief who was straight out of Crumb's Head<lb /><lb />Comix, that he would get one when he was<lb />~goddamn good and ready to give him one',<lb />which was never.<lb />One of us went to dispencary and over-<lb />heard the pigs talking about how they could<lb />~ make a believer out of us 'punks' by driving<lb />through a car wash with a prisoner in the<lb /><lb />Oug<lb /><lb />TI's own suver Dick Tracy does it<lb />again. He found four more brothers of<lb />209-8 that he could fuck over while just<lb />trying harrass one brother who is an<lb />active participant in MDM. The four<lb />brothers had special 'detail' at the Com-<lb />missarry Store where the MAA ran the<lb />brothers liberty instead of barracks 209-8.<lb />The MAA at the store told the brothers to<lb />put a chit in for liberty on Friday, May<lb /><lb />29, 1970, so they could have the three<lb /><lb />day holiday along with he rest of the base.<lb /><lb />When you run such a chit through,<lb />you must have it cleared by every office<lb />which holds your records. They went to<lb />discipline because their records were<lb />kept there. Then they were told to take<lb />the chits over to super Dick Tracy or<lb />Tough Tommy to have them cleared. Like<lb />the shithead he is, he disaoproved them.<lb />Since when does the Navy let a civilian<lb />or a blundering stuvid moron such as ,<lb />Prettyman sign a chit for a military man's<lb />liberty ?<lb /><lb />He doesn't have the name Tough<lb />Tommy for nothing. It wasn't good enough<lb />for him to disaonrove the clits. He ran<lb />out of his office and over to the billetting<lb />office and had all four brothers pulled off<lb /><lb />our brother was to be taken to the barracks<lb />as soon as possible. This enraged the most<lb />active fascist of the whole abortion, BT<lb />Sweat. He said that he might be back by<lb />6am. This happened at ||:30pm.<lb /><lb />At 12:j5am, the doctor was informed<lb />of what was happening, and called the<lb />main gate and issued the order again. He<lb />was then taken to MG, handed a report<lb />chit, and when he tried to read it, had it<lb />snatched out of his hands and told to read<lb />it on the way to the brig.<lb />reply when asked what he was going to. the<lb />brig for was, "Any fuckin' thing | can<lb /><lb />of special detail.<lb /><lb />Being the asshole he is, he fucked<lb />over three other brothers so he could sub-<lb />jugate and harrass me because of my pol -<lb /><lb />itical beliefs and my association with all<lb />my brothers at MDM.<lb /><lb />Super Dick Tracy, not being so tough<lb />or smart, has fun and builds his ego up by<lb /><lb />His (BTI Sweat's)<lb /><lb />ommy retftfyman<lb /><lb />No one in our group was informed of<lb />Article 3l, our rights.<lb /><lb />Five of our brother who wouldn't, or<lb />rather couldn't sing, were put in the "back<lb />room". Then the brother who had been to<lb />sick bay inquired about the medical order.<lb />In two minutes they were herded into the<lb />back of the open pick-up, and driven to<lb />the barracks at 45 mph, base speed being<lb />25 mph.<lb /><lb />This is just atypical example of fascist<lb />Oppression and subjugation at Tl. This type<lb />of criminal justice must come to a scree-<lb />ching halt.<lb /><lb />RISE UP AND ABANDON THE<lb />CREEPING MEATBALL<lb /><lb />POWER TO THE PEOPLE<lb /><lb />holding up my records and statements for<lb />as long as he wants to, in order to harrass<lb />me over my political beliefs. Tommy likes<lb />to keep you a political prisoner for as<lb />long as sixty or ninety days.<lb /><lb />Prettyman does this because he is<lb />paranoid of MDM. He'll try to make a<lb />man change his political beliefs by hold-<lb />ing him prisoner in 209-8, by holding him<lb />prisoner in the Navy.<lb /><lb />Because of MDM, me and others like<lb />me can be helped and shown the way to<lb />use the UCMJ and other methods to out a<lb />stop to the bullshit Prettyman tries to do to<lb />all the brothers in 209-8 and around TI.<lb /><lb />With the advice and help from my<lb />brothers in MDM, | used the lifers' own<lb /><lb />rules and beat them at their own game.<lb />By taking the issueT to a request mast, me<lb />and three brothers got put back on special<lb />detail. When lifers realize that we're<lb /><lb />organized and can fight back, theystop<lb />fucking with us.<lb /><lb />put the pig in the brig<lb />power to the people<lb />signed, The Political<lb />Prisoners of Treasure Island<lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />WELCOME TO FT. ORD..<lb /><lb />AY |<lb /><lb />On May |6, twenty-five bases around<lb />the country called off Armed Forces Day<lb />on the suggestion of the Pentagon. In<lb />some cases, bases were totally closed and<lb />GI's restricted to base because the brass<lb />felt the necessity for extra people to be on<lb />hand for 'riot control dutyT.<lb /><lb />Since MDM was already considered a<lb />major threat to military security in the IIth<lb />and 12th Naval Districts, it was fitting that<lb />NAS Alameda prepared for an armed-land<lb />and sea invasion. What's outasight is that<lb />WE forced them to show their real face.<lb />There was no display of too-shiny brass and<lb />too-well shined shoes and too-well discip-<lb />lined squads of troops. Instead there was<lb />just evidence everywhere of a brass scared<lb />shitless. Its gates were locked, its soldiers<lb />confined, and its power mobilized to defend<lb />itself from us, the people, you and me.<lb /><lb />While Alameda brass were scanning<lb />radar scopes for sub units of the Peoples'<lb />Navy, while Hamilton and Travis airmen<lb />paced nervously on scramble alert, ready<lb />to intercept the fighter-bombers of our<lb />PeoplesT Air Unit 5, 3500 people had<lb />gathered in a sandy lot near Fort Ord.<lb />Marching to show support for the GI's at<lb />Ft. Ord was the order of the day. Under<lb />threats of parking bans, community har-<lb />rassment and CID provocation, people<lb />gathered in good spirits hoping to meet<lb />and rap with GI's.<lb /><lb />While marching to the main gate of<lb />the fort, marchers could be heard cheer-<lb />ing as GI's would flash fists and peace<lb />signs from the other side of the barbed<lb />wire and concertina wire. All this time<lb />helicopters filled with CS gas droned<lb />overhead waiting for the slightest provo-<lb />cation. At this point the people piled up<lb />in front of the gate. Marchers tried to rap<lb />to MPs, but to no avail. People felt that<lb />it just was not enough to march up to the<lb />gate and then turn back again; they wanted<lb />to break down the barriers between them-<lb />selves and the GI's.<lb /><lb />Later that day at the rally, a message<lb />was read to us from an MDM brother who<lb />had managed to have this note smuggled<lb />off base. "The brass. . . are reacting as<lb />if they were under attack by another armed<lb />army. They have closed the fort totally.<lb />They issued live ammunition to the GI's<lb />who were forced to pull riot control duty,<lb />and then took it back from everyone ex-<lb />cept the handful of lifers they knew they<lb />could trust. They have barricaded every<lb />gate. They have developed elaborate com-<lb />municgtions systems. They have put lights<lb />and 'restricted area' signs around the stock-<lb />ades and SPD. They have made all the<lb />brothers pull a full day of duty to insure<lb />that they won't be able to rap to you. They<lb />are locking us in when we work and posting<lb />guards at the door They are even making<lb />us keep all windows closed to be sure we<lb />can't hear anything. .. ."<lb /><lb />Here's a message to you Pentagon<lb />strategists who're clipping this article and<lb />xeroxing it in triplicate. If you thought<lb />May I6 was heavy, you ain't seen nothin'<lb />yet. This is only the beginning.<lb /><lb /></p>

You are with us,<lb />or in the silent majority, afraid to stand<lb />up and be counted. Why? You do not<lb />want any trouble. You do not want in<lb />the brig, or whatever the case may be.<lb />We are not looking for trouble either. All<lb />we want is what we are fighting for, and<lb /><lb />as<lb /><lb />Two years later | got drafted. | re-<lb />ceived the same harrassment, almost the<lb />same living quarters, the same rotten food,<lb />and we all had the same uniforms. They<lb /><lb />didn't know my rame, but brothers, they<lb />had my number!<lb /><lb />| feel more people should know how the<lb />Navy is. This is why I'm writing this letter<lb /><lb />to tell how it has made my life and my mar-<lb />riage so difficult.<lb /><lb />About one year ago my husband and |<lb />were married. About one week before our<lb />wedding he got orders so he went UA. When<lb />| became pregnant he stayed UA to see if<lb />he could get a job. It was hard to find one<lb />because of his situation with the Navy.<lb />When he went back, my nerves got so bad<lb /><lb />an Army brother<lb /><lb />Dear MDM,<lb /><lb />| lost my child. He served his time in the<lb /><lb />brig. | didn't get my allotment check<lb />until September. When he got out he<lb />went UA to get a job again. So when<lb /><lb />it was time for his next duty station, we<lb />didn't have enough money to get him<lb />there.<lb /><lb />When he went back this time, the<lb />judge asked him why he went UA again.<lb />He told him that he had to support his<lb />family, because | can't live on $100 a<lb />month and he has not been paid by the<lb />Navy for over a year. They took away<lb />his pay and he went from a 2nd class<lb />all the way to a fireman's apprentice,<lb />which is next to a recruit. The judge<lb />told him his first obligation was to the<lb />Navy - his family came second. So my<lb />husband asked him who supported his<lb />family, fed them and clothed them. The<lb />judge said he was not obligated to say<lb />because he was not on trial.<lb /><lb />| am pregnant again so he went UA.<lb />The doctor told me if | want this baby |<lb />can't work. Before he got a job to sup-<lb />port me, the Navy picked him up. He<lb />was gone only 34 days but they are trying<lb />to get him for 67 days. His counsellor<lb />told him he could expect from 4 to 6<lb />months in the brig.<lb /><lb />| cannot live on a hundred dollars<lb />a month and get things for our.baby. You<lb />just can't keep an apartment and support<lb />a baby on it. My husband is an epileptic<lb />and it came back just recently while he<lb />is in the brig. He hasn't had it for over<lb />5 years. All the Navy is doing about it<lb /><lb />is es him doped up on darvon and<lb />phenabarbatol.<lb /><lb />All | can say is | don't see why we<lb /><lb />should be treated this way in the ~richest<lb />and freest' country in the world. ,<lb /><lb />a Navy Wk<lb /><lb />Dear MDM,<lb /><lb />tourscore and seven years ago our fathers<lb />brought forth on this continent a new<lb />nafion conceived in liberty and dedicated<lb />to the proposition that all men are created<lb /><lb />equal. Do you believe that all are equal<lb />todayT? Now we are engaged in what<lb />might turn into a civil war. Are you wil-<lb />ling to stand up and be counted for.what<lb />you believe in? The men who fought in<lb />the battle at Gettysburg believed in what<lb />they were fighting for. Why can't you?<lb />They fought because they had a reason.<lb />Give me one real reason why we are in<lb />Vietnam? You don't know do you? |<lb /><lb />see no reason why we are fighting some-<lb />oneel ses' battle when we are not wanted.<lb />Don't you agree? In the discussions to<lb />which this interest has given rise, and in<lb />that arrangement by which they may<lb />terminate, the occasion has been deemed<lb />proper for asserting as a principle the<lb />rights and interests of our cause. If they<lb />will not listen to words, then I say give<lb />~em violence. If they will not fight with<lb />word, then neither will we. God gave<lb /><lb />the only way to get it is to fight for it.<lb />Don't you agree?<lb /><lb />Pepper<lb /><lb />Brother Pepper:<lb /><lb />We read in your letter that you were<lb />readly to fight, but you never told us<lb />what for. If you believe that all men<lb />should be equals today, then that leaves<lb />you at war with better than half the<lb />world's population: women.<lb /><lb />There's nothing good or honorable<lb />about just fighting for a cause. The USA<lb />is fighting for a cause in Vietnam. The<lb />ruling class of America needs new mar-<lb />kets for its products and new resources<lb />for its factories. Without the oil and<lb />rubber of Indonesia, without the tungsten<lb />of Thailand, without the cheap labor of<lb />Asians, the American economy would<lb /><lb />take a nosedive which would make this<lb />recession look like a minor dip. Then the<lb />ruling class tells its puopet ~dita brass<lb />to tell its soldiers that they are fighting<lb />to keep Ky and Thieu in power and to<lb />keep communism from American shores.<lb />Our task, as revolutionaries within the<lb />American military, is to expose the lies<lb />we're force-fed in the military, expose<lb />the brass as the darlings of the American<lb />corporate dite (see our article on ~Brass<lb />in the Corporationg), and then organize<lb />enlisted men and women in the military<lb />as a power to be dealt with.<lb /><lb />This is what we're for. If you'd come<lb />down to our office on 2214 Grove Street<lb />in Berkeley, we'll tell you how we're<lb />fighting for it.<lb /><lb />Dear 'Bulkhead'<lb /><lb />When | was about seventeen years<lb />old, | visited a cousin of mine who at the<lb />time was serving a five year sentence in<lb />Louisiana State Penitentiary, and the<lb />things that came down on those guys were<lb />really bad. When | first got there, | had<lb />to go through a lot of red tape just to see<lb />him. Then | went ona so-called tour.<lb /><lb />Six to seven men shared a very small cell<lb />or room. A mess hall that was nothing<lb /><lb />but a long room. | heard from many people<lb />that the food was rotten. Then | found out<lb />what kind of trades these men were taught,<lb />so they could get a job when they got out.<lb />Dig, they learned how to repair shoes,<lb />become auto mechanics and many other<lb /><lb />low paying jobs. | was also told that most<lb />of their time was used up on useless hard<lb /><lb />labor. But if you were a brown=nose you'd<lb />get something really easy to do.<lb /><lb />After seeing the mess hall, we went<lb />on top of this wall where there were guards<lb />who stood with high powered rifles. From<lb />there | could see all of the prison yard. In<lb />the yard | saw all the men had short hair<lb />and the same uniforms who were being mar-<lb />ched. These men weren't known by their<lb />name, but by a number they were given.<lb /><lb />Yes, it is time to stop apologizing to<lb />youth. It is time to start listening to them.<lb />The youth of today are among the best ed-<lb />ucated people to ever live on this earth.<lb />From this education they have also become<lb />the most humanitarian of the earth's inhab-<lb />itants. They believe that a democratic form<lb />of government will work only if the law-<lb />makers allow it to work. The dissent on the<lb />campuses of today stems largely from this<lb />deep belief in a democratic form of gov-<lb /><lb />ernment. The United States Consititution<lb />uarantees that Congress cannot abridge<lb /><lb />the right to free speech, but Seaman Roger<lb />Priest was given a bad conduct discharge<lb />from the Navy for publishing an anti-war<lb /><lb />ee<lb /><lb />he Constitution guarantees that no<lb />one shall be held in involuntary servitude.<lb />But we still have the draft.<lb /><lb />The Constitution guarantees that all<lb />men are equal in the eyes of the law. But<lb />see which is granted permission to rally if<lb />permit applications are submitted by a pro-<lb />war. and an anti-war group on conflicting<lb />dates. Better yet, tell me what would<lb />happen if a black family tried to move<lb />into "good ole" West Frankfort. | venture<lb />to say that the most "Chirstian People"<lb />would cast the first stone.<lb /><lb />The Constitution guarantees the right<lb />to select the men in prominent positions of<lb />our government. But who selects the men<lb />who run? Certainly not the people. The<lb />Constitution guarantees that only Congress<lb />can wage war. Buf Took what the President<lb />did in Cambodia. For the first time in our<lb /><lb />nation's 200 year history WE ARE THE<lb />AGGRESSORS. Yes as much as our<lb />God-fearing, flag-waving Silent Majority<lb />hates to admit it, WE ARE AGGRESSORS.<lb /><lb />Today, approximately 40% of the col-<lb />leges in the United States are closed bec-<lb />ause of the War Protests. Don't you think<lb />it's time our ~Silent MajorityT realized that<lb />they are now a minority. Don't you think<lb />that our government realized that whenever<lb />this many people are dissenting to govern-<lb />ment policy that it's about time to re-eva-<lb />luate the issues ?<lb /><lb />| will admit that the Communist nations<lb />gleefully watch the campus disturbances.<lb />But | can guarantee that this nation was not<lb />founded by a 'Silent MajorityT.<lb /><lb />| would like to close by quoting the<lb />philosopher Stephen Byington in saying,<lb />"It can never be unpatriotic to take your<lb />country's side against your government. It<lb />must always be unpatriotic to take your<lb />government's side against your country."<lb /><lb />continued on page 7<lb /><lb />" : ;<lb />j<lb /><lb />+ <lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />KNOW LEDGE<lb />IS POWER<lb /><lb />| have been to many other Marine<lb />Corps indoctrinations before. But the<lb />propoganda that was unleashed upon us<lb />at 'Domestic DisturbanceT (Riot Control)<lb />training, on the 28th of April was so<lb />unreal, that | could not believe it.<lb /><lb />We have training once a week, and<lb />| knew that riot control would eventually<lb />find its way into the curriculum of the<lb />lifer pigs. It started out with the hippies.<lb />We were told that the hippies from Berk-<lb />eley and Frisco plan to take over Treasure<lb />Island, not to just occupy the B of A or<lb />the post offce, but to "kick every Marine<lb />and sailor's ass. "<lb /><lb />"Men, they want to come here and<lb /><lb />take a chunk out of every one of your<lb />asses. " hate you because you have<lb /><lb />short hair (like we have a choice) and<lb /><lb />they are going to come here and kick<lb />your ass. Are you going to let that .<lb /><lb />happen ?<lb /><lb />At this time the boots and non-Vietnam<lb />vets yell no.<lb /><lb />"Are you going to let the dirty hippies<lb />piss on us and spit on us?"<lb /><lb />This time one of the Viet-vets could<lb />hold his piece no longer, and explained<lb /><lb />to the men that the people who comprise<lb />these riots have tried every peaceable way.<lb /><lb />All non-violent efforts have been exhausted<lb />and a lot of the rioters are veterans too.<lb /><lb />. so many friends that | saw killed in Nam)<lb /><lb />But this Marine was shouted down by the<lb />people who have not seen what is huppen-<lb />ing in Vietnam first hand. And then the<lb />discussion was turned to the real reason<lb />why we are in Vietnam. This Marine Gun-<lb />nery Sergeant had the audacity to tell us<lb /><lb />that our immediate goal should be to fight<lb />CHINA (800 million people) with GROUND<lb /><lb />iROOPS. 2<lb /><lb />At this point, many of the Nam vets<lb />began shouting Peace, and the lifers were<lb />shouting War, and the discussion was com-<lb />pletely disrupted. The Gunny told everyone<lb />to go outside, and have a cigarette to cool<lb />off, and then return in five minutes. Well,<lb />we're tired of having to listen to fascists<lb />talk their Kill trash. So when we left the<lb />class, we didn't return.<lb /><lb />To all of you lifer Marines who may<lb />be reading this article, when you are lay-<lb />ing in the mud with your arms and legs<lb />blown off, and your buddies are dead (like<lb /><lb />remember that you could have participated<lb />ina Peace Movement. Then and only then<lb />would you have the opportunity to raise a<lb />family and strive to achieve your personal<lb />goals for life. But-if you remain in the<lb />same train of War thought that you are in<lb />now, then you deserve what your fate<lb /><lb />is certain to be. DEATH. Not by the<lb /><lb />Chinese or Vietnamese forces, but killed<lb />by the capitalistic War Machine that the<lb />United States of America has become.<lb /><lb />DISCLAIMER<lb /><lb />This paper does<lb />not represent the views of the<lb /><lb />US Navy. Neither do the views<lb />of the Navy represent us. And<lb /><lb />that goes. for the US government<lb />foo.<lb /><lb />We do something they dont do.<lb /><lb />After a nice weekend, far away from<lb />the lifers, it is standard procedure to re-<lb />turn on a Monday and again face the fact<lb />that the Marine Corps is really fucked up.<lb />Take for example what happened Friday<lb />night while | was far away on liberty,<lb />not even distantly relating myself to the<lb />military machine. It seems that some<lb />juice freaks, one an E-5, came into the<lb />barracks late Friday night or real early<lb />Saturday morning, and started making<lb />noise, kicking lockers, and causing an<lb />all around disturbance. They woke people<lb />up, went into the Squid (Navy) barracks,<lb />and punched some of them around, while<lb />provera fights with people who they<lb />ad just woken up. And somehow, a mat-<lb />tress was burned.<lb /><lb />why people comprising the Armed Ser-<lb /><lb />Now the hole in the mattress was only vices must get together and rule ourselves.<lb /><lb />about as big as a half-dollar. | have big-<lb />ger ones on my mattress. But the Ist Sgt<lb /><lb />decided that it was time to make a big<lb /><lb />thing out of somethina. So he said that<lb />we, the people who are supposed to live<lb /><lb />in that barracks, would have to have a<lb />field day (scrub the walls and such) every<lb />night after work until someone admits to<lb />burning the mattress. The Marine who<lb />did it was probably drunk when he did<lb /><lb />it, and can't even remember if he did it<lb />or not. But regardless, everyone is sup-<lb />posed to suffer. There are quite a few<lb />heads in the barracks, and we don't cause<lb />disturbances when we come in at night,<lb />and so don't feel that we should have to<lb />put up with this illegal infringement of<lb />our free time. It is just one more reason<lb /><lb />If it is necessary to defend this country<lb />from outside aggressors, then we will<lb />stand ready and tall. But we must no<lb />longer allow some high-ranking, rich,<lb />non-combat-eligible lifers make our daily<lb />decisions for us. If you want hair, then<lb /><lb />_ we can get hair. If you do your job, why<lb /><lb />should they ask you to look like a lawn<lb />mower ran over you? We must relate to<lb />each other, and strive to participate in<lb />and learn about politics. We must organ-<lb />ize amongst ourselves and get together,<lb />and stand together when the shit hits the<lb />fan. We owe it to ourselves, living and<lb />serving the richest country in the world,<lb />to maintian the military as professionals<lb />with no infringements of our basic per-<lb />sonal or constitutional rights.<lb /></p>

We will<lb />attempt to answer your letter by comment-<lb />ing point-by -point.<lb /><lb />Yau give a series of Constitutional<lb />guarantees followed by their practical<lb />contradictions. The Constitution is a paper<lb />law like any other. Those laws got on<lb />paper because people fought long and bit-<lb />ter struggles for what they thought their<lb />rights should be. For example, a consti-<lb />tutional amendment granted voting rights<lb />to women. That in itself did not guarantee<lb />women's rights. Women themselves strug -<lb />gled for and won that right only after many<lb />years of fighting. And only their continued<lb />vigilance guaranteed that the paper law<lb />meant anything.<lb /><lb />On your point that this is the first<lb />time that "we are aggressors". The North<lb />American continent was colonized by Eur-<lb />opean powers. In order to set up those<lb />colonies, native Indians were bought off,<lb />moved out, or decimated. What was man-<lb />ifest destiny if not the continuing westward<lb />expansion of white power? Colonial ag-<lb />gression necessitated the ~slave traffic.<lb />Westward expansion demanded "coolie"<lb />slave gangs. And now capitalism demands<lb />new markets, new resources, and cheap<lb />labor. We are just beginning to find out<lb />that America has been the aggressor from<lb />the word ogo.<lb /><lb />Referring to your fifth paragraph. Yes,<lb />we do believe that the issues should be<lb />re-evaluated. Even that is an understate -<lb />ment. However, we can't leave it at that.<lb />We believe that the only way we're going<lb />to get our rights is to fight for them.<lb />Neither Nixon nor the Congress intends<lb />to serve them up to us on a silver platter.<lb /><lb />If you'd come into the office, we'll tell<lb />you just how we're fighting now for the<lb /><lb />rights we think are ours.<lb /><lb />GILLETTE<lb /><lb />continued<lb /><lb />To Concerned Peoples of MDM,<lb /><lb />This is to inform you that we on Al-<lb />catraz have not changed our stand. In<lb />the words of Joseph, "If the white man<lb />wants to live in peace with the Indian he<lb />can... just let me be free. . . free to<lb />follow the religion of my fathers, free to<lb />think, talk, and act for myself.
