          <mods:abstract>Early metallurgical microscopes were inconvenient to use for many engineering applications.  Bausch and Lomb designed this inverted instrument specifically for use in metallurgy with a large view camera.  The objectives use a clip changer.  Two types of light sources were available: the 100-watt low voltage ribbon filament (as in this example) and a carbon arc lamp (similar to A24).  Inverted metallurgical microscopes are still being manufactured.  This microscope was manufactured in the 1920's.</mods:abstract>
