One would think from reading <lb />
late issues the Raleigh Times <lb />
that it had discovered a <lb />
Possibly it is trying to <lb />
hide own misconduct in being <lb />
caught with the four thousand. <lb />
Not the first instance of trying <lb />
to hide one's misdoings by kick- <lb />

One only among p <lb />
farmers to learn that <lb />
Tobacco <lb />
to grow in popularity. <lb />
farmer who through a bit of <lb />
prejudice on his own part, or <lb />
misrepresentation on the of <lb />
others, stands aloof and refuses <lb />
to co operate with the company, <lb />
is simply not awake to his bast <lb />
interest. As long as the farmer <lb />
is at the mercy of the buyer i f <lb />
his products so far as price is <lb />
concerned, just so long will <lb />
play the small end of the game. <lb />
is the only means <lb />
through which the farmer can <lb />
be independent and the <lb />
price of his own products. <lb />
manipulations of he cotton mar- <lb />
against him is a <lb />
proof of this. The Con- <lb />
Tobacco <lb />
offers the opportunity of being <lb />
in control of at least on of his <lb />
products. It on its <lb />
business and the profits arising <lb />
from it go back into the <lb />

a min of such address to <lb />

The industrial edition of The <lb />
was issued and it was a <lb />
one, being praised through <lb />
length and breadth th. <lb />
State and even in other States. <lb />
It was a real benefit to Green- <lb />
ville and Pitt county, and for <lb />
that part of it we fell glad. <lb />
Where the stinging came in was <lb />
the mean advantage Sherman <lb />
took of a circumstance that befell <lb />
us just as the special edition <lb />
being circulated and while col- <lb />
were being made. <lb />
A sudden death occurred in our <lb />
home which necessitated our ab- <lb />
from th office for the time <lb />
and during such absence <lb />
and his wife skipped <lb />
t he town. <lb />
It later that Sher <lb />
man had forged our name in <lb />
ordering cuts, printing and other <lb />
matter necessary for the special <lb />
edition which under the contract <lb />
he was to pay for, and had paid <lb />
none of these bills To protect <lb />
reputation of the paper wt <lb />
ad to for these bills <lb />
It is net pleasant to publish <lb />
such an article as this, nor to ac- <lb />
knowledge being stung, at the <lb />
same time it may be the proper <lb />
thing to do, so that other <lb />
may be warned against such a <lb />
rascal. <lb />

How <lb />
An contributes to <lb />
the Des Capital the fol- <lb />
owing very pertinent <lb />
is to why the mail order houses <lb />
succeed in getting the business <lb />
f the rural communities away <lb />
merchants <lb />
the mail order get <lb />
out of this country each <lb />
that belongs to the home <lb />
the fault is with the <lb />
themselves. <lb />
houses advertise and give <lb />
i- prices on everything they <lb />
offer sale. They tell us what <lb />
have and what they want <lb />
or it. Of course we get soaked <lb />
once in a while and if we do we <lb />
can try some other house. Most <lb />
of the home merchants who ad- <lb />
at all don't quote prices. <lb />
They neglect to tell us what we <lb />
want to price. Of <lb />
course we can go to the store and <lb />
ask price of this article, and <lb />
but you know how it is <lb />
one doesn't know so well exactly <lb />
what he wants to buy when he <lb />
in a store as when he is at <lb />
home. And there is where the <lb />
mail order houses make their hit <lb />
send their advertising mat- <lb />
into homes and we read it <lb />
when we have nothing t to do <lb />
and every member of the family <lb />
who reads their stuff usually <lb />
finds something that he or some <lb />
other member of the family <lb />
wants and many orders arc made <lb />
up and sent out just at such <lb />
times. <lb />
here is where the home <lb />
merchant falls down. If he talk- <lb />
ed up his business to us in our <lb />
homes the same as the mail order <lb />
houses do the people would be in <lb />
to see him the next time they <lb />
came to town, and in many cases <lb />
extra trips would be made to get <lb />
the things at that we didn't <lb />
know we wanted until they were <lb />
brought to our attention. <lb />
home merchant can save <lb />
the expense of getting up a <lb />
We people read the home <lb />
papers more carefully than we do <lb />
the and if the mer- <lb />
chant wants to talk business with <lb />
us let him put his talk in the <lb />
home papers, and put it in so that <lb />
we know he means business <lb />
The home merchant likely, nine <lb />
times out of ten, sells his goods <lb />
as cheap as the mail order houses, <lb />
and I believe on many things <lb />
they are much cheaper but how <lb />
are we to know if he doesn't tell <lb />
us about it. <lb />
merchant must not think <lb />
that even his best customers <lb />
know his goods so well that they <lb />
can tell what he has without be- <lb />
shown. <lb />
is none of my business how <lb />
the home merchant runs his bus- <lb />
but don't like to see these <lb />

US fellows get a little <lb />

Graded Notes. <lb />
People living within the bounds <lb />
of the Greenville graded school <lb />
district are hereby that <lb />
no children who are beginners <lb />
will be admitted to the school <lb />
after Nov. 1st. . <lb />
Children who will be six years <lb />
old before Dec. may enter at <lb />
any time before Nov. 1st. <lb />
Children who are not begin- <lb />
will be admitted at any time <lb />
during year. <lb />
Oct. H B. Smith, Supt. <lb />
next session of legislature. <lb />
We would be exceedingly glad <lb />
to see this vexing question set- <lb />
in this way. We believe it <lb />
would go far towards allaying <lb />
the feeling that now exists <lb />
against the railroads. <lb />
And we believe further, that <lb />
if after a fair trial the cent <lb />
rate proves too low that the <lb />
of the state will see to it that <lb />
justice is done the railroads. <lb />
hope that some <lb />
such amicable solution as that <lb />
suggested above may be reached <lb />
at an early date.<lb /><lb /></p></div></body></text></tei:TEI></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec>
