THANKSGIVING DAY <lb />
THE JAMESTOWN EXPOSITION <lb />
AND SOCIETY. <lb />
the by <lb />
Oct -The <lb />
President issued a <lb />
naming November 29th <lb />
as a day of thanksgiving. <lb />
The text of the proclamation <lb />
is as <lb />
A Proclamation. <lb />
The time of year has come <lb />
when, in accordance with the <lb />
wise custom of oUr forefathers, <lb />
it becomes my duty to set aside <lb />
a special day of thanksgiving <lb />
and praise to the Almighty be- <lb />
cause of the we have <lb />
received, and W prayer that <lb />
these blessings may be <lb />
another year of wide- <lb />
spread well-being has past <lb />
Never re in our history or i i <lb />
the history of any other nation <lb />
has a people enjoyed more <lb />
abounding material prosperity <lb />
than is ours, a prosperity <lb />
great that it should arouse in us <lb />
no spirit of reckless pride, and <lb />
least of all a spirit of heedless <lb />
disregard of our <lb />
a sober sense of cur <lb />
many blessings, and a <lb />
purpose; under providence, not <lb />
to forfeit them by any action of <lb />
our own. <lb />
well-being, <lb />
sable, though it can never be <lb />
anything but the foundation of <lb />
true national greatness and <lb />
If we <lb />
upon this foundation, then OUT <lb />
national LB will be as meaning- <lb />
less and as a house where <lb />
only the foundation has be <lb />
laid. Upon our well <lb />
being must be built a super- <lb />
of individual and n .- <lb />
life lived in accordance <lb />
with the laws of the highest <lb />
morality, or else our prosperity <lb />
itself will in long run turn <lb />
out a instead or a blessing. <lb />
We should be both reverently <lb />
thankful for what we have re- <lb />
and earnestly bent upon <lb />
turning it into a means of grace <lb />
and not of destruction. <lb />
Accordingly hereby set apart <lb />
Thursday, the twenty-ninth day <lb />
of next, as a day o <lb />

Wilmington, N, C, October <lb />
odd business houses, <lb />
including several down town <lb />
loons, were closed for an hour <lb />
between and o'clock at the <lb />
request of Dr. Hamilton and his <lb />
associates, who are holding a <lb />
big revival at the First Baptist <lb />
church. Yesterday the <lb />
tors of business houses were <lb />
waited upon by active church <lb />
workers and asked to give this <lb />
hour to themselves and their em- <lb />
that they might attend a <lb />
special service at the church. <lb />
The saloons were visited also and <lb />
all who would to close for <lb />
the hour were given a placard to <lb />
display in their windows stating <lb />
that the store would be closed the <lb />
following day between the hours <lb />
named. The cards appeared in <lb />

A Buggy Sixty Years Old. <lb />
The buggy in which Joseph E- <lb />

drove his bride, in 1848, <lb />
from South Carolina to his home <lb />
at Canton, Ga., has been <lb />

Mrs E. L Connally, who had <lb />

The Joseph E. Brown estate <lb />
a formal presentation to <lb />
the town of Canton Friday of <lb />
the old Brown homestead and <lb />
four acres of ground, to be used <lb />
as a park. At this time Mrs. <lb />
Connally also gave the town the <lb />
old buggy in which Gov. Brown <lb />
and his bride rode all the way <lb />
from South Carolina. The <lb />
is very valuable as a me- <lb />
and will be placed in the <lb />
kitchen of the old-fashioned <lb />
country mansion, where it can <lb />
be carefully preserved from the <lb />
weather. <lb />
The buggy, though almost sixty <lb />

Suicide is becoming a national <lb />
grievance. Human life is held <lb />
so cheap some places that men <lb />
and women take their lives for <lb />
frivolous causes. <lb />
It common in Oriental <lb />
countries that persons take their <lb />
lives frequently in mere sport. <lb />
In last week's record a case is <lb />
given of the suicide of a woman <lb />
because she could not procure a <lb />
servant maid, two other cases <lb />
are given of women because <lb />
their cooks had left without <lb />
cause. <lb />
The case of a man who com- <lb />
suicide because his wife <lb />
not allow him to eat on- <lb />
ions at the table is recorded. <lb />
But the queerest of all is the <lb />
case of an old physician seventy- <lb />
five years old who committed <lb />
suicide because he was tired of <lb />
He left a paper writing <lb />
in which he stated that he regret- <lb />
to take his own life and thus <lb />
become a murderer and an in- <lb />
grate and suggested that each <lb />
community should have an <lb />
for suicides whose duty it <lb />
would he to furnish a speedy <lb />
painless death for those who <lb />
desired to leave the world and <lb />
go hence. <lb />
It was a serious subject with <lb />
which he dealt and he met it de- <lb />
He said that he ab- <lb />
death by murder upon <lb />
which God had placed his signet <lb />
of infamy, and he was unwilling <lb />
to back in the face of the <lb />
a gift which he had <lb />
meant as a benediction <lb />
Suicide is r very serious thing. <lb />
Legislation has failed to correct <lb />
it. Religious bodies have de- <lb />
it. In some countries <lb />
respectful burial have denied <lb />

When a widower marries a <lb />
widow, they are both unselfish; <lb />
neither of them thinks of No. <lb />
When a married woman <lb />
throws a hint it is sure to strike <lb />
her husband's pocketbook. <lb />
