why be Profane <lb/>
To one who will think and <lb/>
calmly human speech, it is <lb/>
really a puzzle why men pro- <lb/>
In the first place, most <lb/>
men know else why will <lb/>
they not swear in the of <lb/>
ladies or preachers of the <lb/>
Somehow men who swear just feel <lb/>
like it is not the polite thing to <lb/>
before ladies or other <lb/>
presence. <lb/>
And yet those who are addicted <lb/>
to the habit will forget their <lb/>
even strangers <lb/>
and use profanity which often <lb/>
time shocks those who bear, <lb/>
the man who does the <lb/>
swearing seems almost <lb/>
of what he has said. While <lb/>
it is not becoming in any to <lb/>
anywhere, very <lb/>
polite and clever <lb/>
times express themselves in <lb/>
language which for time <lb/>
may shock some one for whom the <lb/>
swearer would have more <lb/>
he knew him. Recently we <lb/>
heard a man seemed to be a <lb/>
clever gentle- <lb/>
man slip some expression of <lb/>
for which he afterwards <lb/>
wished to but did not <lb/>
get a convenient Opportunity. It <lb/>
was a small company, perhaps <lb/>
all stranger to each one <lb/>
whom was a minister of the <lb/>
gospel. The company was dis- <lb/>
cussing some current events the <lb/>
day, when the one of unguarded <lb/>
said some things which he <lb/>
regretted when he that <lb/>
one of the company was a minis- <lb/>

better if he had left off the <lb/>
entirely And so would be <lb/>
better if men in every walk and <lb/>
life could learn how use- <lb/>

A boy's hair grows one-half slow- <lb/>

The human hair forms a profitable <lb/>

DAYS TRIAL <lb/>
Wow th. Win Man Confounded an <lb/>
Artful Plotter. <lb/>
In the ancient times there lived <lb/>
a wonderfully wise man, of whom it <lb/>
was said that he could answer <lb/>
any question put to him. <lb/>
There was one, however, who j <lb/>
thought himself clever enough to I <lb/>
outwit the sage. This man took a <lb/>
poor, captive bird and clasped it so <lb/>
tightly in his hand that only the <lb/>
head and tail were visible. <lb/>
said he to the renown- <lb/>
ed guesser of riddles, bird <lb/>
which I hold in my hand alive or <lb/>
dead <lb/>
If the answer wen- <lb/>
thought this artful plotter, he would <lb/>
just open his hand and let the bird <lb/>
fly. If the answer were he <lb/>
would with one little squeeze crush <lb/>
the poor bird to death. <lb/>
But the wise man proved himself <lb/>
equal to the occasion replied, <lb/>
is as you <lb/>
Each one of you children holds <lb/>
within his or her grasp the fair bird <lb/>
of life. Which is it to be, n blessing <lb/>
or a bane It is you <lb/>
A Useful Little Bird. <lb/>
Do you remember the size of the <lb/>
chickadee You have probably seen <lb/>
many of these little birds hovering <lb/>
about the orchards the past summer, <lb/>
and perhaps have wondered what <lb/>
good such n small creature could do <lb/>
to mankind. <lb/>
Often and often they have saved <lb/>
the crops of apples, how- <lb/>
ever, from the dangerous attack of <lb/>
the The canker- <lb/>
worm's eggs are very small and very <lb/>
numerous, and it takes the bright <lb/>
little chickadee's eyes to find them, <lb/>
and when he has found them he eats <lb/>
them for breakfast, dinner or up- <lb/>
per, it matters not which, and as <lb/>
he eats at for one meal, <lb/>
his every meal is a great benefit to <lb/>
the farmer. <lb/>

Future of the Eiffel Tower. <lb/>
The future of the Eiffel tower is <lb/>
now becoming a topic of serious dis- <lb/>
It has been a familiar ob- <lb/>
to the holiday maker- of the <lb/>
world for some now and in <lb/>
1910 was to become the property of <lb/>
the city of Paris. This fact raised <lb/>
the question as to whether by that <lb/>
time the tower might be regarded <lb/>
as having accomplished its destiny <lb/>
and as ready for demolition. Sci- <lb/>
however, like it as a point <lb/>
of observation; others aver that it <lb/>
acts as a lightning conductor for <lb/>
Paris, and military engineers <lb/>
consider it a useful and ready made <lb/>
station for wireless telegraphy. <lb/>
the influence of these strong <lb/>
credentials the city fathers have <lb/>
prolonged the Eiffel tower agree- <lb/>

The Spread of <lb/>
Leprosy is increasing in <lb/>
North and South America. Co- <lb/>

Such a medical authority as Dr. <lb/>

State lotteries add to the incomes <lb/>

A HARD WORKED CLERK. <lb/>
In Paris, M. minister <lb/>

caustic wit. The other day he was <lb/>

Perforated <lb/>
Although the assertion recently <lb/>
I., an Italian sea captain that <lb/>
the power of sails was increased by <lb/>
their being perforated was ridiculed, <lb/>
it has just been proved that he was <lb/>
right. His theory was that the force <lb/>
of the wind cannot fairly take <lb/>
on an sail because of the <lb/>
immovable air that fills <lb/>
hollow. To prevent the <lb/>
creation and <lb/>
ion he pierced his sails with many <lb/>
holes, through which the wind blew, <lb/>
the balance of the air pressure <lb/>
against and exercising <lb/>
its fall effect. Several experiments <lb/>
