When a crop is matured and ready <lb/>
for market, just half tie work is <lb/>
done. remaining half is to <lb/>
house, pack, sell and receive <lb/>
for them a fair sum of money, which <lb/>
is due every farmer that com- <lb/>
his part of work, and give <lb/>
value received. While many men <lb/>
grow a crop others <lb/>
make e failure in grading their <lb/>
stock which is very important <lb/>
Herein the secret between <lb/>
success and failure, profit and lose, <lb/>
so your potatoes close, as it <lb/>
always pays to do so, put your <lb/>
twos in a package to themselves <lb/>
and the number in a package <lb/>
separate and apart from the cull <lb/>
and twos. If it pays t do a thing, <lb/>
it pays to do it well. If tho market <lb/>
is grade them, if it is low and <lb/>
weak be sure and grade them, for <lb/>
without being packed as they should <lb/>
have an elephant on your hands. <lb/>
You do not want any potatoes in <lb/>
your barrel of number ones that is <lb/>
mailer than a turkey egg, for if you <lb/>
put smaller ones in with the larger <lb/>
ones, do not fill up very fast <lb/>
damage the sale of the better <lb/>
goods. inferior goods may be <lb/>
sold though it is not advisable to <lb/>
put on the market as it has a <lb/>
tendency to lower the market on <lb/>
the better all means do <lb/>
not allow them to sun burn as they <lb/>
are very hard to sell at all and bring <lb/>
a very low price on tho market. <lb/>
In order to have your barrels well <lb/>
filled when the consumer receives <lb/>
you must fill well at <lb/>
lie sure that they are well filled be <lb/>
fore letting them go. Fill your <lb/>
barrel half or two-thirds full and <lb/>
then shake well, fill up am <lb/>

ISSUE DEFEATED. <lb/>
The bond issue election in <lb/>
county Saturday <lb/>
for for macadamizing <lb/>
roads was defeated by a very <lb/>
small majority. Tho good <lb/>
advocates express determination <lb/>
to push the measure again as <lb/>

change in favor of the bond is <lb/>
sue the past few weeks was <lb/>

hoped to give Rockingham the <lb/>
It is doubtful if the average <lb/>
annual income of lawyers, in- <lb/>
all members of the pro- <lb/>
-good, bad, and <lb/>
13.000. While a <lb/>
few are able to command large <lb/>
fees and pile up comfortable for- <lb/>
tunes, the majority are far less <lb/>
fortunate. And the lower strata <lb/>
of the profession contain an <lb/>
number who live from <lb/>
hand to mouth, and many of <lb/>
whim are undeserving of any <lb/>
sort of a living in that <lb/>
although they might be <lb/>
worthy of respect if engaged in <lb/>
for which they were <lb/>
fitted by nature and attainments. <lb/>
In all professions is <lb/>
ways room on and by the <lb/>
same token there is always a <lb/>
crowd at or near the bottom. <lb/>
Among the may thousands of <lb/>
lawyers, doctors, and clergymen <lb/>
whom the schools grind out eve- <lb/>
year there are not a few who <lb/>
have mistaken their calling. As <lb/>
mechanics or laborers they might <lb/>
have lived useful lives, and all <lb/>
lives that are useful, in that they <lb/>
contribute to the welfare of com- <lb/>
are honorable. There <lb/>
is no way of rendering any <lb/>
service to the Creator. Tl e <lb/>

His creatures. Therefore, the <lb/>
truest and most acceptable man- <lb/>
of showing one's love to the <lb/>
Father of All is to live tho kind <lb/>
of life and, in right spirit, to do <lb/>
that kind of work for which one <lb/>

AN EVENING TOWN <lb/>
We are going to make a plea <lb/>
for our n that we hope and <lb/>
trust will be in tie <lb/>
spirit in Mb it is g. en, <lb/>
if We good <lb/>
will be accomplished. Not long <lb/>
ago it was suggested to us by a <lb/>
woman that we write an article <lb/>
on the habit that so many men <lb/>
of getting up from the sup- <lb/>
per table and marching off down <lb/>
town to spend the hours <lb/>
in the company of their men <lb/>
friends, instead of the <lb/>
time with their wives and <lb/>
It is a timely topic and <lb/>
one that deserves serious con- <lb/>
The men who do <lb/>
this mean no harm, of course. <lb/>
They do not remember that it is <lb/>
a plain preference for the <lb/>
of others to those they love <lb/>
best. The little woman left at <lb/>
home is compelled to feel this <lb/>
way about it, anyhow. She will <lb/>
never say so in words; she too <lb/>
proud for that, but in her heart <lb/>
she is bound to believe that the <lb/>
attraction down town is stronger <lb/>
than that at home, for everybody <lb/>
knows that a man will where <lb/>
he enjoys himself most. Various <lb/>
excuses are offered. The mail <lb/>
must be looked over. Business <lb/>
engagements must be met. <lb/>
Conferences of various kinds <lb/>
must be held. This that and <lb/>
the other must be done; but <lb/>
all, the man who never fails <lb/>
to spend from seven to ten <lb/>
o'clock every night away from <lb/>
his family, can not convince the <lb/>
wife that her company is as con- <lb/>
genial or as pleasant as that of <lb/>
the gentlemen he meets in the <lb/>
grocery, drug store, and other <lb/>
popular places for the nightly <lb/>
In his place of <lb/>
all day, with a glimpse of <lb/>
him at the three meals, it is hard <lb/>
that the wife and the children <lb/>
must remain alone through the <lb/>
three hours from supper until <lb/>
bedtime, and there can be no <lb/>
business reason strong enough <lb/>
to justify his leaving them. Now <lb/>
and then, cf course, he is com- <lb/>
to meet emergencies, but <lb/>
we are not talking about that. <lb/>
We are referring to the daily <lb/>
habit some men have, as regular <lb/>
as the coming of the night, of <lb/>
leaving their families at the <lb/>
time they have every right to <lb/>
claim his <lb/>

Representative Small has in- <lb/>
a bill which may be of <lb/>
great importance in the drain <lb/>
age and reclamation of the swamp <lb/>
lands, particularly of Eastern <lb/>
North Carolina. Recently Rep- <lb/>
of Min- <lb/>
introduced a bill <lb/>
the receipts from the <lb/>
sale of public lands in certain <lb/>
States to the drainage of swamp <lb/>
lands in those States. The <lb/>
of States which now have <lb/>
public lands is comparatively <lb/>
small. Mr. Small has redrafted <lb/>
this bill, making <lb/>
changes, the principal of <lb/>
which is that the funds can be <lb/>
used for draining swamp lands <lb/>
in any State whether having <lb/>
public lands or not. The bill <lb/>
provides that the United States j <lb/>
shall be reimbursed by easy pay- <lb/>
for the expenditure re- <lb/>
quired in the reclamation. <lb/>
bill of Mr. Small further pro- <lb/>
that lairds located in the <lb/>
State and susceptible of <lb/>
may also drained under <lb/>
provision of the act at the option <lb/>
of said State. <lb/>
As North Carolina still owns <lb/>
large bodies of swamp lands <lb/>
which are after the tic <lb/>
has been removed, unless <lb/>
they can be reclaimed, it will <lb/>
seen how the State could utilize <lb/>
this act for its benefit. These <lb/>
swamp lands in North Carolina <lb/>
are owned by the State Board of <lb/>
Education, and any improvement <lb/>
or enhancement in value would <lb/>
increase the assets of our public <lb/>
schools. <lb/>
Mr. Small states that the idea <lb/>
is not at all impracticable, <lb/>
that really conditions may be <lb/>
such in the near future as to re- <lb/>
in the passage of the bill. <lb/>
Texas, which has no public <lb/>
lands as well as the delegations <lb/>
from other influential State.-, is <lb/>
actively favoring this legislation. <lb/>
And why not We are utilizing <lb/>
the proceeds of sale of public <lb/>
lands, and there is no possible <lb/>
reason why should not use <lb/>
part of the same funds for <lb/>
the surplus water from <lb/>
swamp lands and, thereby, open <lb/>
up to settlement lands which will <lb/>
be infinitely more fertile and <lb/>

Shakespeare's description of tho <lb/>
Republican situation, wore he <lb/>
waited back to this world again. <lb/>
The Radical is turbulent, <lb/>
national and sensational. <lb/>
Judge Prichard refuses to say <lb/>
