Sunday was a day of gladness <lb />

The exercises were <lb />
in accordance with the <lb />
previously published. Dr. J, D. <lb />
ilia grand old man whom <lb />
everybody love, delivered the <lb />
historical address it was <lb />
almost like the voice of <lb />
words were earnest, <lb />
so interesting, so uplifting. He <lb />
began with a reference to his love <lb />
for every spot in North Carolina <lb />
and especially ibis eastern section, <lb />
and in- delight at being <lb />
and able to take part <lb />
this service. Then going back to <lb />
days of I he , and early <lb />
settlers, he told bow the Baptists <lb />
came in planted churches here <lb />
and there, their advocacy of re- <lb />
I liter- y, belief in <lb />
nil priesthood and <lb />
brotherhood giving then great <lb />
with the people. The <lb />
he said, acknowledged the <lb />
superiority of no man as able to <lb />
pronounce curses or blessings upon <lb />
the individual, but every believer <lb />
in Christ is a priest himself free <lb />
to approach G d at will com- <lb />
with Him. Then, too, be <lb />
said, Baptists recognize in <lb />
every believer Christ, of what- <lb />
ever name, a brother strike <lb />
bands with him in carrying on <lb />
God's work. <lb />
nearer home Dr. <lb />
told of early history <lb />
of Greenville, how the town was <lb />
first located a few miles distant <lb />
from the present seat was call- <lb />
ed in of <lb />
nor Martin; later town <lb />
moved up on the I of Tar river <lb />
and the changed to Green- <lb />
ville. He told of the establishing <lb />
of the church here in 1827, and the <lb />
organization of the Baptist State <lb />
Convention here three later, <lb />
Greenville, he said, was I lien the <lb />
most accessible paint between <lb />
and Elizabeth City, hence <lb />
this was selected for the <lb />
meeting of those interested in <lb />
movement. So you see what honor <lb />
rests the church. <lb />
But far the existence of a church <lb />
here it is possible that the <lb />
would have been organ <lb />
Dr. d.-o made brief <lb />
mention of early pastors of <lb />
here and their labors, and <lb />
turning to present beloved pas <lb />

bate in years gone, who have <lb />
passed to the better world. He <lb />
missed them, tears welled into <lb />
many eyes as called names of <lb />
some of these faithful saints <lb />
told of virtues. <lb />
Dr. said that Greenville <lb />
had also been very dear to him <lb />
even outside of church. In <lb />
connection he referred <lb />
I i the late Dr and <lb />
paid a beautiful tribute to his <lb />
memory. <lb />
entire address was most in- <lb />
and appreciated by every <lb />
hearer. Rev. J. K. fol- <lb />
lowed in a few remarks, thanking <lb />
Dr. for his admirable ad- <lb />
dress and urging his church to live <lb />
up to the principles that bad dis- <lb />
the Baptists and mark- <lb />
ed growth as a church. At <lb />
night Mr. delivered an <lb />
excellent sermon on and <lb />
that delighted large <lb />
congregation. <lb />
The of <lb />

WASHINGTON LETTER. <lb />
Our <lb />
C, Mar. 31.1906. <lb />
Washington fog and dust still <lb />
involve the rate bill. The meas- <lb />
has reached the point where <lb />
the whole question is involved in <lb />
th right of judicial review and <lb />
in this provision if any where will <lb />
be concealed joker that is to <lb />
make the measure acceptable to <lb />
the railroads. For the benefit <lb />
of the uninitiated, it may lie said <lb />
the now is for an <lb />
agreement to an amended bill <lb />
that will provide for a more or <lb />
loss broad court review. The <lb />
object of the friends of the <lb />
measure will be to frame this <lb />
review provision s- that i will <lb />
not interfere with the obvious <lb />
lent of the law and make the <lb />
delays, possible under the bill <lb />
more than offset any benefits <lb />
that the measure might confer. <lb />
Naval officers as a whole are <lb />
pleased over the sanction of the <lb />
Naval appropriation bill by the <lb />
committee, not only because it <lb />
gives a little short, of <lb />
for the execution of the <lb />
plans that the department <lb />
has on hand but because it also <lb />
provides for at least one battle- <lb />
ship that will rival the English <lb />
in size and effect- <lb />
There is a provision in <lb />
the bill for one battleship of not <lb />
over that will be all <lb />
that the Navy department <lb />
could desire. <lb />
While the work of defensive <lb />
naval construction is going on, <lb />
there is appropriation made also <lb />
for a new dry dock that will <lb />
equal the Dewey in size and will <lb />
be retained in American waters. <lb />
The prop headquarters of <lb />
this dock will be Solomon's Is- <lb />
land in the Chesapeake, but <lb />
though-this spot affords unusual <lb />
facilities in the way of deep water <lb />
and a good channel, the dock, <lb />
once it is be avail- <lb />
able for use anywhere on the At- <lb />
coast where there is water <lb />
deed enough to submerge it and <lb />
whore the exigencies of the <lb />
call for its presence. <lb />
It is estimated that an agree- <lb />
on the statehood bill is in <lb />
sight. This is more or less <lb />
cheering news, not that it makes <lb />
any vital difference whether or <lb />
not the territories that have been <lb />
waiting years fur admittance to <lb />
the Union are admitted just at <lb />
this time or not, that agree- <lb />
foreshadowed has the show <lb />
of reason and decency about it <lb />
and consequently reflects the <lb />
same qualities on the Conferees <lb />
The President has <lb />
to Congress the enact- <lb />
of the laws recommended <lb />
by the Waterways Commission <lb />
with a view of saving Niagara <lb />
Palls. He says in effect that the <lb />
appropriation of the falls for <lb />
water power gone so far that <lb />
there is serious danger of the <lb />
great, scenic wonder being spoil- <lb />
ed for spectacular purposes alto <lb />
Mr. C. C I; i. of <lb />

was in the city Tuesday to <lb />
dispose of some meat raised. <lb />
Mr. success as a farmer <lb />

Johnstown, Pa., plays in tough <lb />
luck. Some years ago the town was <lb />
nearly ruined and hundreds of lives <lb />
lost by a flood from a breaking mill <lb />
dam, and recently it has almost <lb />
been swept aw by fire- <lb />
by his client. Thia represents <lb />
the true lawyer. Now for the <lb />
other kind, and I believe they <lb />
are greatly in the majority. The <lb />
lawyer that will the <lb />

knowingly mislead the judge; <lb />
knowingly use false testimony <lb />

are things to use, to trade on and <lb />

are so many stage habits <lb />
which he may or may not as- <lb />

There is a much larger part of <lb />
the latter class now than there <lb />
was or years ago. It is <lb />
the latter class that a prominent <lb />
Southern railroad official is <lb />
with saying that must <lb />
control the Senate. We prefer <lb />

The foregoing letter from Mr. J. <lb />

in the Sunday issue of the <lb />

line with an editorial that appeared <lb />
in The Reflector a few days ago, <lb />
and the letter also drew forth a <lb />
strong editorial in the News and <lb />
Obs. warning the people <lb />
against the danger of electing <lb />
lawyers to our legislative <lb />
bodies. The people cannot be <lb />
pealed to too strongly along this <lb />
line, as there was never a time in <lb />
the history of our State and Nation <lb />
when this danger was greater. The <lb />
trusts, the railroads, the great in- <lb />
companies and large <lb />
generally are using every <lb />
to control our legislative bodies, <lb />
and they can readily accomplish this <lb />
through their lawyers and <lb />
being elected to seats in these bodies. <lb />

The average railroad attorney <lb />

that it is all prejudice on the <lb />
part of this writer, but it is not <lb />
true. I consider the profession <lb />
of law a most honorable one, and <lb />
some of my most valued friends <lb />
