aged years, was shot <lb/>
and killed and his sou, <lb/>
fatally wounded by Jeff <lb/>

pot platform here this afternoon. <lb/>
A previous disagreement, it is told <lb/>
was revived when the men met. <lb/>
The younger Bennett was shot first <lb/>
and while bis father stepped over <lb/>
to assist him he was killed, four <lb/>
bullets entering his body. The <lb/>
parties are well to do reside at <lb/>
near Jefferson, Tex. <lb/>
Tex, March <lb/>
eight miles south of here, <lb/>
a Mexican named Ramon overtook <lb/>
a vehicle containing two young <lb/>
women and a little boy yesterday. <lb/>
Ramon climbed into the <lb/>
rear of the buggy and cut <lb/>
the throat of one of the women, <lb/>
causing instant death. The horse <lb/>
became frightened and began to <lb/>
run, whereupon Ramon drew a <lb/>
revolver and shot the other woman <lb/>
dead. Jealousy prompted the <lb/>
deed. <lb/>
Ga., March <lb/>
was received here to day of the <lb/>
death of John Brant, years old, <lb/>
at bis home at Nashville, <lb/>
as the result of injuries <lb/>
inflicted by his son, Bob <lb/>
aged years. The report says <lb/>
that the younger man, the <lb/>
influence of liquor, Saturday <lb/>
night, attacked and abused his <lb/>
father, left him for dead. Bob <lb/>
Brant defied arrest, but finally <lb/>
was overpowered and lodged <lb/>
jail, with the charge minder <lb/>
against him. <lb/>

NAMING RACE HORSES. <lb/>
Many Turf Called After <lb/>
People In Every Walk of Life. <lb/>
From statistics compiled here is <lb/>
gleaned the interesting fact that <lb/>
many great turf performers have <lb/>
been oddly named for people in <lb/>
walk of life. The best horse ever <lb/>
named for a policeman was Inspect- <lb/>
or It., a very brilliant race horse and <lb/>
famed in the stallion rank.- as the <lb/>
sin of Endurance by Right. He <lb/>
was named as a compliment to <lb/>
Thomas then in- <lb/>
of police in Ken <lb/>
horse ever named for a govern- <lb/>
or was Luke Blackburn, and Senator <lb/>
Wand as the horse ever named <lb/>
for a United States senator. Hugh <lb/>
Penny won more races than any <lb/>
named for a jockey. The <lb/>
mighty Domino, the largest winning <lb/>
horse in American history, re- <lb/>
his name from his color, be- <lb/>
a black horse, as a eon- <lb/>
sequence, was so called for the <lb/>
masquerade costume Instead of the <lb/>
popular game, as many supposed. <lb/>
Daily American and Enquirer were <lb/>
the horses ever mimed for news- <lb/>
papers, and David Garrick was the <lb/>
most brilliant race horse ever <lb/>
bore the name of an actor. Butter- <lb/>
flies, the Futurity winner of 1894, <lb/>
was the best performer ever named <lb/>
for a piny in this country, and <lb/>
Drake Carter was the most <lb/>
horse ever named for a doc- <lb/>
tor. Iroquois, the only American <lb/>
bred winner of the English Derby <lb/>
and St. Leger, stands as the <lb/>
performer ever named for an Indian <lb/>
chief, and Boston Mas by long old- <lb/>
the best horse ever mimed for a game <lb/>
of cards. <lb/>
Lexington was the greatest horse <lb/>
ever named for a city or town and <lb/>
Kentucky the best horse named for <lb/>
n state. George Kinney and <lb/>
Cotton were the two best horses ever <lb/>
named for men In the <lb/>
and the noted was the best <lb/>
mare ever given a name in honor <lb/>
a nun. Senator J. C. S. Blackburn <lb/>
had two bores named for him. One, <lb/>
a very high priced yearling, the <lb/>
a maiden, while Blackburn, <lb/>
Si. Marlin. was a fairly good <lb/>
winning twelve races during <lb/>
City Star. <lb/>

The anniversary were <lb/>
in accordance with the <lb/>
previously published Dr. J. Ii. <lb/>
the grand old man whom <lb/>
everybody delivered <lb/>
historical address it was <lb/>
almost like voice of <lb/>
words were So <lb/>
so interesting, so uplifting. He <lb/>
began with a reference to bis love <lb/>
for every spot in North Carolina <lb/>
and especially ibis eastern <lb/>
and bis delight at being <lb/>
pie-eat and able to take part <lb/>
this service. Then going back to <lb/>
days of , and early <lb/>
settlers, he told how the Baptists <lb/>
came and planted here <lb/>
and there, their advocacy of re- <lb/>
and belief in <lb/>
and <lb/>
giving the n great <lb/>
with tie people. The <lb/>
list-, he said, acknowledged the <lb/>
superiority of no man as able to <lb/>
pronounce curses or blessings upon <lb/>
the individual, but every believer <lb/>
in Christ is a priest in himself free <lb/>
to approach d at will com <lb/>
with Him. Then, too, be <lb/>
said, the Baptists recognize in <lb/>
believer in Christ, of what- <lb/>
ever name, a brother and strike <lb/>
bands with him in carrying on <lb/>
God's work. <lb/>
nearer home Dr. <lb/>
ham told much of early history <lb/>
of Greenville, how the town was <lb/>
located a few miles <lb/>
from the present seat and was call- <lb/>
ed Mart in in honor of <lb/>
nor Martin; later the town <lb/>
moved up on lank of Tar river <lb/>
and the name changed to Green- <lb/>
ville. He told of the establishing <lb/>
of the church here in 1827, and the <lb/>
organization of the Baptist State <lb/>
Convention here three later, <lb/>
in <lb/>
Greenville, be said, was then <lb/>
most accessible between Hal <lb/>
and Elizabeth City, hence <lb/>
this was selected for <lb/>
meeting of those interested in the <lb/>
movement. So you see what honor <lb/>
rests upon the church. <lb/>
But the existence of a church <lb/>
here it is possible that the <lb/>
would not have organ <lb/>
r. made brief <lb/>
mention of early pastors of <lb/>
here and their labors, and <lb/>
turning to present beloved pas <lb/>
tor have a line <lb/>
of noble succession and I know <lb/>
you will do nobly in carrying on <lb/>
Then look- <lb/>
over the large congregation <lb/>
with voice he <lb/>
those dear he hail known <lb/>
long gone, who have <lb/>
passed on to the better world. He <lb/>
missed them, and tears welled into <lb/>
eyes as ho called of <lb/>
Borne of these faithful saints and <lb/>
told of their virtues. <lb/>
Dr. said that <lb/>
had also been very dear to him <lb/>
even outside of th In <lb/>
this connection he referred <lb/>
I i the Dr. <lb/>
paid a beautiful tribute to bi <lb/>
memory. <lb/>
The entire address was moot in- <lb/>
and appreciated by every <lb/>
hearer. Rev. J. E. fol- <lb/>
lowed a few remarks, thanking <lb/>
Dr. for his admirable ad- <lb/>
dress and urging bis church to live <lb/>
up to the principles that had dis- <lb/>
the Baptists and mark- <lb/>
ed their growth as a At <lb/>
night Mr. delivered an <lb/>
excellent sermon on and <lb/>
that delighted the large <lb/>
congregation. <lb/>
The feature of the <lb/>
was superb, <lb/>
excellent condition and render- <lb/>
every selection faultlessly. <lb/>
The solos at the service <lb/>
by Mrs. Brown and evening <lb/>
service by Miss Tyson were <lb/>
exceptionally and <lb/>
full choir <lb/>
-pedal by male <lb/>
voices came in for their snare of <lb/>
admiration. <lb/>
The entire services of day <lb/>
were truly delightful and will <lb/>
prove to the community in <lb/>
welding spirit of Christian <lb/>
brotherhood among people. <lb/>
While this is the first anniversary <lb/>
Memorial Baptist church has <lb/>
held, we hope it will be followed <lb/>
each year by such an inspiring <lb/>
service. <lb/>

WASHINGTON LETTER. <lb/>
Our <lb/>
C, Mar. 31.1906. <lb/>
Washington fog and dust still <lb/>
involve the rate bill. The meas- <lb/>
has reached the point where <lb/>
the whole question is involved in <lb/>
th i right of judicial review and <lb/>
in this provision if any whore will <lb/>
be concealed joker that is to <lb/>
make the measure acceptable to <lb/>
the railroads. For the benefit <lb/>
of the uninitiated, it may be said <lb/>
that the now is for an <lb/>
to an amended bill <lb/>
that will provide for a more or <lb/>
less broad court review. The <lb/>
object of the friends of the <lb/>
measure will be to frame this <lb/>
re. provision s-- that will <lb/>
not interfere with the obvious <lb/>
of the law and make the <lb/>
delays possible under the bill <lb/>
more than offset any benefits <lb/>
that the measure might confer. <lb/>
Naval officers as a whole are <lb/>
pleased over the sanction of the <lb/>
Naval appropriation bill by the <lb/>
committee, not only because it <lb/>
gives a little short of <lb/>
for the execution of the <lb/>
plans that the department <lb/>
has on hand but because it also <lb/>
provides for at least one battle- <lb/>
ship that will rival the English <lb/>
Dreadnought in size and <lb/>
There is a provision in <lb/>
the bill for one battleship of not <lb/>
over that will be all <lb/>
that even the Navy department <lb/>
could desire. <lb/>
While the work of defensive <lb/>
naval construction is going on, <lb/>
there is appropriation made also <lb/>
for a new dry dock that will <lb/>
equal the Dewey in size and will <lb/>
be retained in American waters. <lb/>
The prop headquarters of <lb/>
this dock will be Solomon's Is- <lb/>
land in the Chesapeake, but <lb/>
though this spit affords unusual <lb/>
facilities in the way of deep water <lb/>
and a good channel, the dock, <lb/>
once it is be avail- <lb/>
able for use anywhere on the At- <lb/>
coast where there is water <lb/>
deed enough to submerge it and <lb/>
where the exigencies of the <lb/>
call for its presence. <lb/>
It is estimated that an agree- <lb/>
on the statehood bill is in <lb/>
sight. This is more or less <lb/>
cheering news, not that it makes <lb/>
any vital difference whether or <lb/>
not the territories that have been <lb/>
waiting years for admittance to <lb/>
the Union are admitted just at <lb/>
this time or not, that agree- <lb/>
foreshadowed has the show <lb/>
of reason and decency about it <lb/>
and consequently reflects the <lb/>
same qualities on the conferees<lb/>
The President has <lb/>
mended to Congress the enact- <lb/>

there is serious danger of the <lb/>

The exercises were <lb/>
in accordance with the <lb/>
previously published. Dr. J, D. <lb/>
ilia grand old man whom <lb/>
everybody love, delivered the <lb/>
historical address it was <lb/>
almost like the voice of <lb/>
words were earnest, <lb/>
so interesting, so uplifting. He <lb/>
began with a reference to his love <lb/>
for every spot in North Carolina <lb/>
and especially ibis eastern section, <lb/>
and in- delight at being <lb/>
and able to take part <lb/>
this service. Then going back to <lb/>
days of I he , and early <lb/>
settlers, he told bow the Baptists <lb/>
came in planted churches here <lb/>
and there, their advocacy of re- <lb/>
I liter- y, belief in <lb/>
nil priesthood and <lb/>
brotherhood giving then great <lb/>
with the people. The <lb/>
he said, acknowledged the <lb/>
superiority of no man as able to <lb/>
pronounce curses or blessings upon <lb/>
the individual, but every believer <lb/>
in Christ is a priest himself free <lb/>
to approach G d at will com- <lb/>
with Him. Then, too, be <lb/>
said, Baptists recognize in <lb/>
every believer Christ, of what- <lb/>
ever name, a brother strike <lb/>
bands with him in carrying on <lb/>
God's work. <lb/>
nearer home Dr. <lb/>
told of early history <lb/>
of Greenville, how the town was <lb/>
first located a few miles distant <lb/>
from the present seat was call- <lb/>
ed in of <lb/>
nor Martin; later town <lb/>
moved up on the I of Tar river <lb/>
and the changed to Green- <lb/>
ville. He told of the establishing <lb/>
of the church here in 1827, and the <lb/>
organization of the Baptist State <lb/>
Convention here three later, <lb/>
Greenville, he said, was I lien the <lb/>
most accessible paint between <lb/>
and Elizabeth City, hence <lb/>
this was selected for the <lb/>
meeting of those interested in <lb/>
movement. So you see what honor <lb/>
rests the church. <lb/>
But far the existence of a church <lb/>
here it is possible that the <lb/>
would have been organ <lb/>

passed to the better world. He <lb/>
missed them, tears welled into <lb/>
many eyes as called names of <lb/>
some of these faithful saints <lb/>
told of virtues. <lb/>
Dr. said that Greenville <lb/>
had also been very dear to him <lb/>
even outside of church. In <lb/>
connection he referred <lb/>
I i the late Dr and <lb/>
paid a beautiful tribute to his <lb/>
memory. <lb/>
entire address was most in- <lb/>
and appreciated by every <lb/>
hearer. Rev. J. K. fol- <lb/>
lowed in a few remarks, thanking <lb/>
Dr. for his admirable ad- <lb/>
dress and urging his church to live <lb/>
up to the principles that bad dis- <lb/>
the Baptists and mark- <lb/>

night Mr. delivered an <lb/>

that delighted large <lb/>

WASHINGTON LETTER. <lb/>
Our <lb/>
C, Mar. 31.1906. <lb/>
Washington fog and dust still <lb/>
involve the rate bill. The meas- <lb/>
has reached the point where <lb/>
the whole question is involved in <lb/>
th right of judicial review and <lb/>
in this provision if any where will <lb/>
be concealed joker that is to <lb/>
make the measure acceptable to <lb/>
the railroads. For the benefit <lb/>
of the uninitiated, it may lie said <lb/>
the now is for an <lb/>
agreement to an amended bill <lb/>
that will provide for a more or <lb/>
loss broad court review. The <lb/>
object of the friends of the <lb/>
measure will be to frame this <lb/>
review provision s- that i will <lb/>
not interfere with the obvious <lb/>
lent of the law and make the <lb/>
delays, possible under the bill <lb/>
more than offset any benefits <lb/>
that the measure might confer. <lb/>
Naval officers as a whole are <lb/>
pleased over the sanction of the <lb/>
Naval appropriation bill by the <lb/>
committee, not only because it <lb/>
gives a little short, of <lb/>
for the execution of the <lb/>
plans that the department <lb/>
has on hand but because it also <lb/>
provides for at least one battle- <lb/>
ship that will rival the English <lb/>
in size and effect- <lb/>
There is a provision in <lb/>
the bill for one battleship of not <lb/>
over that will be all <lb/>
that the Navy department <lb/>
could desire. <lb/>
While the work of defensive <lb/>
naval construction is going on, <lb/>
there is appropriation made also <lb/>
for a new dry dock that will <lb/>
equal the Dewey in size and will <lb/>
be retained in American waters. <lb/>
The prop headquarters of <lb/>
this dock will be Solomon's Is- <lb/>
land in the Chesapeake, but <lb/>
though-this spot affords unusual <lb/>
facilities in the way of deep water <lb/>
and a good channel, the dock, <lb/>
once it is be avail- <lb/>
able for use anywhere on the At- <lb/>
coast where there is water <lb/>
deed enough to submerge it and <lb/>
whore the exigencies of the <lb/>
call for its presence. <lb/>
It is estimated that an agree- <lb/>
on the statehood bill is in <lb/>
sight. This is more or less <lb/>
cheering news, not that it makes <lb/>
any vital difference whether or <lb/>
not the territories that have been <lb/>
waiting years fur admittance to <lb/>
the Union are admitted just at <lb/>
this time or not, that agree- <lb/>
foreshadowed has the show <lb/>
of reason and decency about it <lb/>
and consequently reflects the <lb/>
same qualities on the Conferees <lb/>
The President has <lb/>
to Congress the enact- <lb/>
of the laws recommended <lb/>
