It is a com moil thing to hear <lb />
people in almost any town or <lb />

some people seem to take de- <lb />

TAKE NO <lb />
An Old Time Who <lb />
too Sharp for a Newspaper <lb />
Man. <lb />
There is no comparison be- <lb />
tween an old time and the <lb />
of the present day; the <lb />
new man is not in it; tho old <lb />
lows lived tight next to the <lb />
white mail and imbibed a <lb />
deal of was either good <lb />
bad. most of which he has never <lb />
forgotten, though only a very <lb />
few of these old fellows are <lb />
There is one, however, at <lb />
Jackson Springs, where Press <lb />
Correspondent Joyner a <lb />
week recently. Now Mr. Joy- <lb />
has traveled; his <lb />
been wide and he has no doubt <lb />
felt that the man who could <lb />
work a game on him did <lb />
not live. the sharpest get <lb />
caught when least expecting it. <lb />
It was so with Mr. <lb />
Quite a bevy of ladies were there, <lb />
among them Mrs. Ransom, wife <lb />
of the late Senator and <lb />
several other ladies from the <lb />
eastern part of the State, from <lb />
which section Mr. Joyner comes; <lb />
lie prides himself on being a <lb />
down caster; he talks like one. <lb />
One pretty day some of the <lb />
who were posted, told <lb />
Mr. Joyner that an old <lb />
by name, who was <lb />
to be seen around tho place eve- <lb />
day, was from down east and <lb />
could yet give the so <lb />
common among the of <lb />
that section in the days before <lb />
the war. A man who has ever <lb />
heard this will never <lb />
forget it; it is only novel, but <lb />
has music in it and to hear a <lb />
coming home from <lb />
the at eventide giving it <lb />
in unison raises a man's hair on <lb />
end. And so it was that Mr. <lb />
Joyner was soiled with a moving <lb />
desire to hear it once more. He <lb />
was told that did <lb />
not like to give it and would have <lb />
in be but Mr. Joy- <lb />
said he was equal to the task <lb />
and inviting Mrs. and <lb />
the other ladies to remain at the <lb />
spring, be tackled the old fellow; <lb />
he told him where ho came from, <lb />
how he loved to hear the old <lb />
sound and so on and so on. <lb />
was modest and <lb />
did not want to then <lb />
the newspaper man gave him a <lb />
quarter and the old <lb />
lowed up a little, but still he <lb />
would not seeing be <lb />
was not exactly in the notion, <lb />
Mr. Joyner gave him another <lb />
quarter, making DO cents in all. <lb />
Then scratched <lb />
his bead and to his <lb />
friends that tho tangled <lb />
at the Springs did not <lb />
relish the sound and had a habit <lb />
of making fun of him, so ho <lb />
would just down do road <lb />
a and when out of sight, <lb />
would let her go. lie <lb />
off and Mr. Joyner hastened to <lb />
the ladles and told them to just <lb />
wait for tho music which was <lb />
coming. The went <lb />
on and on, but no ever <lb />
came back, nor did <lb />
The truth finally dawned on <lb />
the wide man that he <lb />
had been The old <lb />
was a Moore county <lb />
and hearing Mr. Joyner's <lb />
appeal, saw a chance to make i <lb />
few cents and he did. <lb />
never heard the down <lb />
easier in his life, but <lb />
he made a down caster holler. <lb />
Mr. Joyner declares he is go- <lb />

This suggestion may be all right <lb />
but it the idea in establish- <lb />
this great central exposition is <lb />
to eliminate those held from time to <lb />
time in other cities throughout the <lb />
country, then we do not agree with <lb />
it. While the benefit arising from <lb />
these expositions is in a sense gen- <lb />
of course the greatest benefit <lb />
goes to the city holding it, and one <lb />
city is no entitled to have all <lb />
this benefit than another. Wash- <lb />
is already getting its bare <lb />
of maintenance at the expense of the <lb />
entire country without giving it a <lb />
monopoly of expositions. <lb />
Because Washington is visited by <lb />
practically everybody in the country <lb />
L no reason that city should be the <lb />
place in which people can go to <lb />
attend an exposition. Such a <lb />
I would become monotonous. <lb />
The people know something <lb />
about other cities and their <lb />
and in no other way can they <lb />
get this knowledge so well as by a <lb />
to these cities. How many <lb />
people went to Philadelphia, <lb />
Chicago, Atlanta, Charleston, St <lb />
Louie, Portland, and other cities <lb />
who would never have gone there <lb />
but for the expositions held in them <lb />
And there will he thousands to at- <lb />

but for this attraction. all <lb />
should Know more of our vast <lb />

Every city and every State con- <lb />
tributes its share to support of <lb />
the government; and it is the duty <lb />
of the government to help out every <lb />
section whose people have the enter- <lb />
prise to inaugurate and hold an ex <lb />
position. All should have a square <lb />
deal in this particular. <lb />
Wonder how it makes the <lb />
dent feel to know that the country <lb />
is cognizant of the fact that his <lb />
election was bought with the big <lb />
campaign contributions pumped out <lb />
of insurance companies and corpora <lb />
And to think that when <lb />
Judge Parker made this charge just <lb />
before the last election, the <lb />
dent himself came out in a signed <lb />
card of denial. Truth will come to <lb />
the surface when the spirit of <lb />
form take hold of the people. <lb />
A. building and loan association <lb />

business for the man who sells food <lb />

business for everybody who is in <lb />

THE PRESIDENT'S SALARY. <lb />
B. Duke admits that he is worth <lb />
Well that is enough <lb />
to keep him out of the poor house <lb />
without hi. to bleed the to- <lb />
tanner, to death to add a few <lb />
ore millions to his pile. <lb />
Blackburn has been deposed as <lb />
dispenser of a part of the govern- <lb />
pie, and will have to content <lb />
himself with sitting in the corner <lb />
and nibbling his own little piece <lb />
He will lose even that when the next <lb />
election comes. <lb />
A good deal has recently been <lb />
said of the insufficiency of tin- <lb />
President's salary of <lb />
There are many who believe <lb />
he should have at least twice as <lb />
much, in view of the demands <lb />
made upon him financially. This <lb />
idea is by the state- <lb />
inert that is any <lb />
American citizen has a license to <lb />
spend even in the White <lb />
and in the course of the <lb />
debate investigator has en- <lb />
tho world on all forms <lb />

The President is paid <lb />
a year into his private purse, <lb />
and the following, who may be <lb />
classed as the clerical force em- <lb />
ployed in executive work, are <lb />
paid by the <lb />
secretary, assistant <lb />
private secretary, <lb />
1,800; live <lb />

clerks at salaries ranging from <lb />
to telegraph <lb />
two ushers, each, <lb />
night usher, <lb />
a WOO. These em- <lb />
perform government <lb />
ties, in addition to the <lb />
for this purpose, the <lb />
government furnishes a man to <lb />
lake care of the tires at a <lb />
year; a Stewart at and <lb />
lows two special funds of <lb />
and a year. Of tho <lb />
largest sums, is for re- <lb />
pairs and for re-furnishing the <lb />
White House; is for fuel; <lb />
for the greenhouse; <lb />
for gas, matches, th <lb />
of the stable and various <lb />
matters. The is <lb />
for stationery, carpets, the care <lb />
of the stable as distinguished <lb />
from expenditures for feed <lb />
equipage and the like. Alto- <lb />
therefore, it is figured <lb />
that the President gets about <lb />
a year. The President <lb />
of the French Republic receives <lb />
a salary of probably <lb />
the smallest paid highest <lb />
in any European country, <lb />
for expenses, and be- <lb />
sides he is furnished a palace or <lb />

States has many expenses <lb />
