GREENVILLE. PITT COUNTY. NORTH CAROLINA FRIDAY, JANUARY 1906. <lb />

TEACHER'S MEETING. <lb />
Interesting Session Saturday of <lb />
Last WeeK. <lb />
Although the weather was bad <lb />
last Friday and Saturday, the <lb />
meeting of Pitt county <lb />
held in the <lb />
school Saturday morning, <lb />
Jan. 13th. was a happy <lb />
A good crowd was present, <lb />
and all enjoy the time <lb />
spent pleasantly <lb />
together. Those teachers who <lb />
came over and roads <lb />
deserve much credit, hut be it said <lb />
injustice to they would <lb />
not have come an cheerfully it they <lb />
had not that there <lb />
something good In store for them <lb />
at the end of their journey, for the <lb />
meetings of Pitt county <lb />
have never other than inter- <lb />
eating and Inspiring. <lb />
Owing to the fact that a number <lb />
of the teachers the <lb />
was not <lb />
and the meeting was made <lb />
informal. The devotional exercises <lb />
were by Rev. H. H. <lb />
Moore. Plat, Smith, <lb />
or the Greenville graded <lb />
school, was introduced to the <lb />
association. He made an excellent <lb />
Impromptu speech, In which he <lb />
spoke highly-, of the work the <lb />
Is doing, and expressed <lb />
a desire to be of service in the <lb />
work. <lb />
Miss formerly a teacher <lb />
of this county, told something of <lb />
her work in the graded <lb />
and represented the <lb />
aloe edited her brother, of New <lb />
York. , <lb />
Last, least, came the <lb />
address by Prof. W. B. Dove. <lb />
graded school. Mr. Dove tried <lb />
a very manner to impress <lb />
upon the teachers the <lb />
of being doing their <lb />
beat, and at the same time veiling <lb />
themselves and their work. <lb />
Severn short talks were made at <lb />
intervals by W. H. <lb />
who la always willing to speak an <lb />
encouraging and helpful word to <lb />
the teachers, over whom he haw <lb />
supervision. Pamphlets by able <lb />
authors on geography and nature <lb />
were distributed. <lb />
Thia meeting, though its attend- <lb />
ant was necessarily smaller <lb />
did much good, and will <lb />
long be remembered by those <lb />
present as a most pleasant occasion. <lb />
May the of the <lb />
continue to grow and spread, lend- <lb />
Cheer and inspiration to its <lb />
members. Dora <lb />

FIGHT <lb />
To Cheapen Goods to American <lb />
Consumers. <lb />
Washington, D. C. Jan. <lb />
Representative made <lb />
splendid fight today to amend the <lb />
Philippine tariff bill so as to give <lb />
the President authority to reduce <lb />
the import duty on the class of <lb />
goods manufactured In this <lb />
try which are sold at a lower price <lb />
In foreign countries than at home. <lb />
In a ringing three-minute speech <lb />
Mr. emphasized the import <lb />
and put the <lb />
stand-pat Republicans in a very <lb />
light. Singular as it <lb />
may a large element of Re- <lb />
publicans led by Mann, of Illinois, <lb />
with the democrats in <lb />
Mr. when he con- <lb />
The speech was one of <lb />
the best the Congressman ever <lb />
made. <lb />
The amendment offered by Mr. <lb />
was of objected to on a <lb />
point of order by the floor leader, <lb />
Payne, and ruled out by the <lb />
siding officer. <lb />
In his speech Mr. said in <lb />
it always happens, <lb />
that whenever any bill is intro- <lb />
duce here which helps the con- <lb />
sumer there la always some little <lb />
rule In the way of It and it seems <lb />
impossible to get it before the <lb />
House. I if yon would <lb />
give me time, and listen to me, I <lb />
show amendment not <lb />
out of order, but from the <lb />
ruling of the Chair I confess have <lb />
bet little hope, and therefore I <lb />
conclude by I have intro- <lb />
this a last resort, in the <lb />
Hope that the baring at <lb />
heart the interest of the million's <lb />
of people who are under the <lb />
nation of the trusts and combines, <lb />
will allow this amendment to <lb />
before this House. If I occupied <lb />
position, so help me God, I <lb />
would put this amendment before <lb />
this House if every other commit <lb />
tee of the every Speaker <lb />
of every Congress, had from time <lb />
Immemorial ruled to the contrary. <lb />
Your rules are a curse when they <lb />
come between and our duty to <lb />
the News and <lb />
Observer. <lb />

The speech abounded in Mr. <lb />

was by many severe <lb />
and thrusts <lb />
at the President. At times he <lb />
wept over what he regarded as the <lb />
indignities to Mrs. Morris, and his <lb />

his fellow Senators that he would <lb />
demand an investigation of the <lb />

If the evening train is <lb />

Origin of the Legend That on the <lb />
Old One Cent Piece. <lb />
A United States one cent piece <lb />
bearing the motto, for de- <lb />
not u penny for <lb />
extensively circulated early in the <lb />
last century. <lb />
One of the principal incidents <lb />
that led to the adoption of this <lb />
seems singularly out <lb />
of place on an American coin, es- <lb />
niter the United Slates <lb />
had just achieved its Independence <lb />
of Great when <lb />
the Males merchant ship <lb />
Dauphin of Philadelphia was seized <lb />
near the strait of by a <lb />
warship of Algiers and her crow <lb />
passengers were thrown into <lb />
man bondage to await an exorbitant <lb />
ransom. <lb />
About the same lime the <lb />
can Maria of Huston <lb />
and Minerva of New York also were <lb />
seized in the Mediterranean, and <lb />
their people met a similar fate, <lb />
a total of American citizens <lb />
in danger of being sold into the <lb />
slave marts of the east. At that time <lb />
the United States was without a sin- <lb />
ship of war or naval officer <lb />
navy yards. <lb />
The cause of unprotected con- <lb />
of the country was the strong <lb />
opposition to a permanent nary <lb />
well as to a standing army, and con- <lb />
resorted to the plan of paying <lb />
an annual tribute to the <lb />
powers of north Africa, so <lb />
there would be no further <lb />
of our commerce in the Med- <lb />
Twenty-two of the prisoners were <lb />
ransomed by the government for <lb />
about while the others died <lb />
in captivity or were ransomed by <lb />
their friend-, hi a short time the <lb />
animal tribute from the United <lb />
States amounted to over <lb />
when the in con- <lb />
realized that the tribute was <lb />
far exceeding the cost of maintain- <lb />
a navy. <lb />
Then the cry of Millions for de- <lb />
not a penny for was <lb />
raised and did not a little toward <lb />
securing the appropriation for the <lb />
first group of war vessels that made <lb />
the United Slates famous. <lb />

During the delivery of his lines <lb />

accompanied his words, so much so <lb />
that the teacher, surprised at his <lb />

so hard a time. <lb />
Owing to a strike in the <lb />
grand opera in New York was given <lb />
without tho chorus. The audience <lb />
was enthusiastic and wants it eon- <lb />
tinned. With only the sing- <lb />
is no interruption to con- <lb />
during the performance. <lb />
There is no better way to judge a <lb />
man than by his speech, and those <lb />
who heard Judge II. F. <lb />
charge to the grand jury Monday <lb />
were quick to reach the conclusion <lb />
that ho is a man of high character <lb />
and ability, a keen between <lb />
right and a good judge <lb />
men and what is in At times <lb />
he gave emphasis to the point under <lb />
discussion in very plain language, <lb />
calling spade a when the <lb />
subject justified it. Following him <lb />
in his charge run jotted <lb />
down seine notes here thereto <lb />
speak of more fully than could be <lb />
done in the first reference to what <lb />
lie said. <lb />
In speaking of the dignity <lb />
rounding the office of grand jurors <lb />
and tin duties upon <lb />
them he said they should make <lb />
of such offenses us came <lb />
within their own knowledge. They <lb />
should even go further and make <lb />
presentment when matters come to <lb />
them upon creditable information. <lb />
Hut there distinction as lo what <lb />
creditable information is. If a man <lb />
come mouthing around tho grand <lb />
jury Mom with some complaint and <lb />
they him to be a common liar, <lb />
he should be dismissed at <lb />
without further ado. the word <lb />
f men known to be honest Hue <lb />
in character is worthy of considers, <lb />
lion and information coming from <lb />
such a source was creditable. <lb />
Judge Long expressed surprise at <lb />
finding upon reaching here that <lb />
there were cases on the criminal <lb />
locket, yet it had been only a abort <lb />
time since a criminal court. Should <lb />
from u foreign land drop in and <lb />
look at this record, without looking <lb />
into the faces of the would <lb />
include that all were bad. Hut the <lb />
criminal class are in the minority, <lb />
and thank God it is so, for it they <lb />
were not in the minority there would <lb />
on mil he house left stand- <lb />
Vet such conditions existing <lb />
in I i large and intelligent a county <lb />
law adding citizens <lb />
fail in their duly to assist officers in <lb />
repressing crime. <lb />
lie expressed disapproval of <lb />
present jury system that re <lb />
quires twelve men to a verdict. <lb />
When much is at slake, the prevail <lb />
fool idea about selecting juries <lb />
makes the temptation strong to get <lb />
one man to hang a jury, and with <lb />
the defendant having twenty-three <lb />
peremptory challenges while the <lb />
State only four makes this easy <lb />
to accomplish. In this respect the <lb />
jury system ought to changed, <lb />
and three fourths of the jury should <lb />
sufficient for n verdict in a capital <lb />
and a majority or two thirds in <lb />
minor offenses, To help bring <lb />
about a reformation in this <lb />
he would like to be a member of <lb />
the Legislature about twenty min <lb />
for he would make a speech m <lb />
it long if he did nothing else. <lb />
way of parenthesis to show <lb />
that the present jury system had <lb />
horns, outlived its urn be gave two <lb />
illustrations One was tho home <lb />
a man f real <lb />
estate and personal estate I <lb />
good Ian just after the war when <lb />
men were impoverished and needed <lb />
relief from debt, but now a dis <lb />
of thrift in that it held <lb />
some men back from <lb />
more than the homestead through <lb />
fear of having to pay their debts. <lb />
The other was the government sys- <lb />
of pensioning every fellow who <lb />
powder in the war. He <lb />
believed the valiant disabled soldier <lb />
t to have a pension, but this <lb />
way of every deserter, every fellow <lb />
who hid behind a stump or took to <lb />
the woods being on the pension list <lb />
and getting something for nothing <lb />
is absurd. These and present <lb />
jury system are abuses that ought to <lb />
corrected. <lb />
Before coming into this court he <lb />
asked the register deeds for <lb />
as to what the courts of Pitt <lb />
county were costing the tax payers. <lb />
The figures furnished showed that <lb />
the courts of the past fiscal year cost <lb />
the clerk collected in jury <lb />
taxes leaving the net cost <lb />
and the people got back <lb />
in fines for the school fund only <lb />
f I courts costs too <lb />
much. <lb />
liquor brings more cases to the <lb />
criminal docket come from any <lb />
other source. The trouble in get- <lb />
ting the illegal selling of liquor <lb />
stopped is that there is too much <lb />
lying about it. Neither those who <lb />
sell it nor those who buy it will go <lb />
on the witness stand and tell the <lb />
truth. <lb />
Another trouble hard to correct is <lb />
carrying concealed weapons. While <lb />
this law is the statute books it <lb />
ought to he enforced, but even <lb />
the habit is not stopped He some <lb />
times felt that the judges of the <lb />
State ought to come together and <lb />
agree upon some uniform penalty <lb />
for this offense. <lb />
The foregoing is only a part of <lb />
the strong Judge Ling made. <lb />
His interesting charge left an <lb />
press for good upon every lover of <lb />
law and order who heard him. <lb />
The Common Sense. <lb />
Oar attention was called not long <lb />
ago lo the origin of the word <lb />
that we honor so much <lb />
and refer to so often The man <lb />
with common sense, oar informant <lb />
explained, was the man who voiced <lb />
the common of the community <lb />
the conclusion, in other words, <lb />
upon which public sentiment finally <lb />
settled down. This a good theory <lb />
at least and is strictly true of the <lb />
men possessed of rare gift. He <lb />
who is not endowed this saving <lb />
common sense is the man who is not <lb />
correctly read the mind upon <lb />
any given question, and who fails to <lb />
interpret the of opinion <lb />
among neighbors. We have all <lb />
seen these rarely gifted men, and <lb />
they are always leaders and guides, <lb />
valuable alike to stimulate or re- <lb />
strain the public conscience, <lb />
men arc not nor usual- <lb />
the ones upon whom the people <lb />
rely in times of Stress, The man of <lb />
marked personal gifts is usually- <lb />
over confident in his own <lb />
He does not pause to feel the public <lb />
pulse or take counsel of the many <lb />
minds about him, while the man of <lb />
common sense, thinking of rs <lb />
than of himself, balances the <lb />
conflicting opinions of those about <lb />
him, and out of the Babel of voices <lb />
weighed in the scales of his <lb />
reason reaches the same and safe <lb />
conclusions that satisfy the public <lb />
mind. It not toadying to the <lb />
opinions of the populace, but it is <lb />
the great truth so often quoted, that <lb />
in the multitude of counsels there is <lb />
wisdom. The fact is, that exactly <lb />
at tins point the highest wisdom <lb />
may be found, and the man who first <lb />
discovers and gives it expression <lb />
he who is gifted with we call <lb />
good old common sense. And one <lb />
f the vital elements in his success <lb />
is ability to bridle his own <lb />
tongue, for the man whose words <lb />
outrun his thoughts will never com- <lb />
the confidence of his fellows. <lb />
