NORTH CAROLINA, FRIDAY, 1909 <lb />
It is now in Mr. <lb />
to and p to Congress <lb />
to <lb />
This i the week that all are glad <lb />
is here mi. I will be equally glad <lb />
when it is over. <lb />
New York is out with her bank <lb />
examiner must have been ex <lb />
mining some the banks. <lb />
The hanging of Mr. Mary <lb />
i few in Vermont is <lb />
mill exist in <lb />
that state. <lb />
The Henderson Gold Leaf has <lb />
up its twenty-fourth year. <lb />
It rinks with the best weekly papers <lb />
in suite. <lb />
The windy city is coming around <lb />
for more notoriety. <lb />
It is well enough to arouse Wall <lb />
street even if it takes a <lb />
Chicago bank failure to do it. <lb />
Three Chicago banks failing with <lb />
combined liabilities of <lb />
is enough to give that city a financial <lb />
jolt. <lb />
Remember your greatest <lb />
is derived through making <lb />
somebody else happy. Let this be <lb />
your Christmas motto. <lb />
A building and loan association <lb />
and some factories should be organ <lb />

Una <lb />
Just as well poking fun at <lb />
the mother in-law until it seen <lb />
how it turns out with the Winston <lb />
man who married his. <lb />
Buying for Christmas is easier <lb />
than paying for it. Don't over do <lb />
your pocket book in the effort to <lb />
make an impression. <lb />
If South Carolina does have a <lb />
hanging as a result of that hotel <lb />
tragedy at it will lie <lb />
miscarriage of justice, in which <lb />
that state has already noted. <lb />
A New Jersey woman dreamed <lb />
that were in the house and <lb />
leaped out the second story window. <lb />
Wonder what she would have done <lb />
had I lie dream been about mice in- <lb />
stead of burglar <lb />
The large state dailies issued <lb />
mammoth Christmas editions on <lb />
Sunday. Some of them were equal <lb />
to <lb />
Of course the hotel keeper <lb />
was going to put up the plea of self- <lb />
defense, or else. He ought <lb />
to hang just the same. <lb />
The National Republican party is <lb />
about for a political funeral. <lb />
Mr. Cleveland could preach a nice <lb />
this <lb />
There will be activity in real <lb />
estate around Greenville the coming <lb />
year and demand for building <lb />
material Good time for somebody <lb />
to start a brick manufacturing plant <lb />
We shall rot take at a <lb />
New York preacher for saying that <lb />
a man cannot honestly draw a salary <lb />
in excess of a year. He <lb />
certainly could not have anybody in <lb />
this quarter in mind. <lb />
It continues to be hard to predict <lb />
just what the price of cotton will do. <lb />
It may go to fifteen cents, but those <lb />
who buy it are acting just like they <lb />
do not believe the reports as to the <lb />
of cotton ginned and think <lb />
the farmers are holding more than <lb />
is claimed. is going to <lb />
get fooled <lb />
Charlotte is making a spread be- <lb />
cause a lull grown deer was seen on <lb />
a street there the other day. That's <lb />
nothing. Greenville's streets are <lb />
alive with dears any day, some grown <lb />
some that are not grown. <lb />
Do you owe anybody anything, if <lb />
so hurry and pay it so they will <lb />
have something to enjoy Christmas <lb />
on. Don't think that because the <lb />
amount you owe is small it makes <lb />
no Every little counts, <lb />
and one small payment may be the <lb />
means of getting others paid. <lb />
The president is realizing the <lb />
spirit of the crowd he has to deal <lb />
with. The last rumpus between <lb />
leading North Carolina Republicans <lb />
who have rushed to him with their <lb />
grievances has provoked from him <lb />
the expression that he wished to the <lb />
very bottom of his heart that there <lb />
was no patronage to distribute <lb />
among the Republicans in the South. <lb />
If his wish were granted there would <lb />
soon be i Republican party on this <lb />
side the Potomac, for it is only the <lb />
hope of patronage that keeps the <lb />
in it. <lb />
General F. I. Os- <lb />
borne, of Charlotte, has located in <lb />
New York for the practice of law. <lb />
In his leaving the state North Caro- <lb />
loses another of her able men. <lb />
The Girl. <lb />
If people would atop and think <lb />
about the heart-aches they cause; <lb />
the needless they give when <lb />
they rail out against the telephone <lb />
girl or the local manager, they <lb />
have a more care. <lb />
The girls in central are laboring for <lb />
their bread. They are doing the <lb />
best they know how to do, as a <lb />
rule, and it is <lb />
wants to curse them through the <lb />
or who is short and <lb />
dent in bis demands and answers, <lb />
The is always trying to <lb />
make his success de- <lb />
pends his position and salary. If <lb />
find that something wrong <lb />
they could call attention to the fact <lb />
in a way that would not cause <lb />
for the girl or the <lb />
they could understand that if <lb />
their ungrounded kicks reached <lb />
headquarters that off would go the <lb />
heads of the subordinates, and after <lb />
the dismissal would be too late to <lb />
regret the haste and anger. Every- <lb />
thing. <lb />
There is much common in <lb />
the foregoing and it applies not <lb />
only to telephone service but in <lb />
other positions where the public <lb />
must be catered to. Persons are <lb />
prone to forget the thousand and one <lb />
courtesies shown them from time to <lb />
time by those who hold such <lb />
and will almost kick their <lb />
heads off with impatience over one <lb />
instance of imaginary inattention, <lb />
when the one serving them is at the <lb />
time burdened with demands equally <lb />
as important, The public n-eds to <lb />

Reflector is not going to do <lb />
much crowing over its esteemed <lb />
contemporaries, some of them <lb />
must come along if they want to <lb />
keep up. It has not been long since <lb />
we told that King Edward was a <lb />
subscriber this paper, and now n <lb />
train has been named for it. We <lb />
will just say in passing that King <lb />
Edward paid his subscription in <lb />
advance, and the Spec- <lb />

time. <lb />
The Raleigh Times stated at the <lb />
time that it only took over the <lb />
mechanical equipment of the <lb />
Post and agreed to fill out the <lb />
unexpired subscriptions <lb />
it seems that the grudge against <lb />
the News and Observer went along <lb />
with the deal. We never could see <lb />
why newspapers in the same town <lb />
should keep fighting each other in <lb />
stead of working to build up <lb />
their town, public does not take <lb />
much inter, st in such quarrels. <lb />
Scientists claim that electricity <lb />
can make a man forget <lb />

No doubt about that, if he only <lb />
gets enough of the stuff he will <lb />
forget that he ever lived. <lb />
Call for Mammoth Convention. <lb />
The cotton producers of the South, <lb />
bankers, merchants and <lb />
of other business interests are <lb />
hereby called to meet in convention <lb />
at the City of New Orleans, La., <lb />
11th, 18th and 13th, <lb />
We want five thousand delegates to <lb />
be present, representing the entire <lb />
cotton territory of the South when <lb />
the convention is called to order at <lb />
one o'clock P. M., on Mil <lb />
in the splendid auditorium of the <lb />
Washington Artillery building. <lb />
The farmers generally have ex- <lb />
pressed B desire for this convention <lb />
similar to the one held at New Or- <lb />
leans last January. The South has <lb />
won a notable victory in handling <lb />
her great staple crop since that time <lb />
and it is but meet and proper that <lb />
the people should come together and <lb />
rejoice over great blessings which <lb />
they have enjoyed and to emphasize <lb />
their determination to continue the <lb />
present reign of prosperity through <lb />
the future. There arc many things of <lb />
The great development of <lb />
in the fourteen Southern <lb />
States is set forth by figures <lb />
taken from The <lb />
Record, of Baltimore, and secured <lb />
from other sources, all of which are <lb />
reliable. In manufactured products <lb />
the from 1880 to 1890 was <lb />
from a valuation of to <lb />
in 1900 the figures <lb />
were 11,000,000,000, while for 1905 <lb />
the valuation is placed at <lb />
The output of pig iron in <lb />
1880 was tons, and this <lb />
year it is <lb />
In the Southern States had <lb />
invested in cotton mills, <lb />
operating spindles, while <lb />
ten years later <lb />
the amount invested in the <lb />
industry and the <lb />
of spindles; this year <lb />
is invested and there are <lb />
spindles. These mills now con <lb />
bales of cotton, as <lb />
against only bales in <lb />
The possibilities of the industry are <lb />
shown in the statement that there are <lb />
in the world a total of <lb />
spindles and the South can supply <lb />
cotton for while there <lb />
are in the section in which the <lb />
staple grows but spindles. <lb />
These figures would seem to indicate <lb />
that, other tilings being equal, there <lb />
is no danger of too many mills be <lb />
built in the South. This sec- <lb />
raises the staple and it should <lb />
also manufacture the greater part <lb />
it, thus to greater extent reaping the <lb />
benefit to be derived therefrom <lb />
Twenty live years ago there were <lb />
but cotton oil mills in the South, <lb />
with a capital stock of <lb />
and in most places cotton seed were <lb />
regarded as worthless, being used <lb />
mainly for Idling gullies and <lb />
fertilizer. Now there are <lb />
cotton oil mills in operation and <lb />
their total capitalization is <lb />
more than half the amount in- <lb />
vested cotton manufacture in this <lb />
sec ton. <lb />
The figures quoted above give <lb />
me idea of the rapidity with which <lb />
the Southern States are coining to <lb />
the front in the matter of <lb />
and are indeed gratifying. <lb />
Taken in connection with the fact <lb />
this development may now be <lb />
said to have only fairly begun they <lb />
