the Godwin shop now stands, and <lb />
the freight depot will be just back <lb />

freight traffic. <lb />
The I ii in rd of aldermen at an <lb />

South Pitt street from the <lb />
southern limits of the town to and <lb />
across Ninth street, which gives <lb />
access to the site selected for the <lb />
depots. <lb />
It is said that the construction <lb />
of the road has been divided into <lb />
seven sections, and each section <lb />
let to contract under bond that <lb />
the work be completed before <lb />
the first day September, 1907. <lb />
Bo it is safe to say that the road <lb />
will be completed in operation <lb />
within eighteen months from today <lb />

future of Greenville is With two <lb />

as fast as it can come, don't you see <lb />

Now we want to again refer to <lb />
what we believe would be a and <lb />
profitable investment It is in a <lb />
building and loan association. While <lb />
such an organization could have <lb />
done well here for years past, there <lb />
n was a more propitious time <lb />
for one than right now. <lb />
will certainly prow, people will be <lb />
moving here and there will be a <lb />
demand for houses Look over <lb />
present population of the town and <lb />
it is easy to see that those who own <lb />
their homes are the most interested <lb />
in the welfare and progress of the <lb />
a man to own his home <lb />
he becomes a better citizen. <lb />
A building and loan association <lb />
will make it easy for industrious <lb />
men to secure and own homes and <lb />
the growth of the town will he more <lb />
rapid. At the same time it would <lb />
pay a good dividend to those who <lb />
invested their money. You who <lb />
have means get to thinking over this <lb />
matter, and let one of the steps <lb />
of the new year be the Organization <lb />
of a building and I. an association. <lb />
At Salisbury recently a <lb />

Not a Good Law <lb />
The Merchants Journal, of <lb />
is of the opinion that two- <lb />
thirds of the merchants of the South <lb />
would be forced to retire from <lb />
if the proposed Parcels Post <lb />
law should be enacted by Congress. <lb />
We do not know, of course, whether <lb />
it would be as bad as <lb />
it would work serious harm to the <lb />
home dealers who are entitled to <lb />
every protection that generous laws <lb />
can afford. The scheme is simply <lb />
intended to build up the department <lb />
stores and mail order houses of the <lb />
Bast by putting into effect a postage <lb />
rate much cheaper than anything <lb />
enjoyed to day. The big deficit in <lb />
the Department is <lb />
enough that the government cannot <lb />
order the change, and <lb />
yet there is a powerful influence <lb />
and a powerful lobby at work in the <lb />
interest of the cause It would <lb />
divert trade from Southern business <lb />
houses in d it would build up the <lb />
trade of establishments in New <lb />
York and other cities by depriving <lb />
our merchants of that which rightly <lb />
and logically belongs to them. <lb />
misguided people in North <lb />
Carolina are advocating it. They <lb />
believe that it will help the public <lb />
as a whole and possibly it may, hut <lb />
it them at the expense of <lb />
our merchants without whom we <lb />
could not secure the necessities of <lb />
every day life. of these <lb />

battle ever known to the world. <lb />
They are being applauded by mill- <lb />

yoke of thieving and speculative <lb />
manipulation that has held them so <lb />
long, and has been the means of <lb />
enabling the spinners to grow <lb />
wealthy at the expense of <lb />
the poor farmer. <lb />
Those who stood loyal to the As- <lb />
and accepted its advice, as <lb />
given last January, to fix a price of <lb />
per pound on their <lb />
it and get so, <lb />
standing there were thousands <lb />
decried their efforts by <lb />
foolish, The <lb />
amount of cotton held by the loyal <lb />
ones was sufficient to bring the price <lb />
ti before the present crop was <lb />
ready for market. <lb />
On September 7th. the Association <lb />
advised the farmers to ask for <lb />
their cotton as conditions fully war <lb />
ranted that price Many fixed that <lb />
and sold for it. <lb />
Now, on December 1st, the fact <lb />
the crop is very short has been <lb />
established beyond shadow of a <lb />
doubt, and only a small remnant of <lb />
that unsold; also, that the mar- <lb />

future prices enormously advanced, <lb />
cotton mills loaded down with con- <lb />
tracts orders for goods several <lb />
months ahead, and only with about <lb />
one half enough cotton in sight to <lb />
till them. Will they pay for <lb />

if you ask if If you do not they <lb />
will lake it at as they have done <lb />

let them take it at their price, doc, <lb />
it is as you please, but <lb />
remember that if you sell for less <lb />
than its value you are not only <lb />
injuring yourself, but every other <lb />
owner of cotton is being denied his <lb />
price while you are giving yours <lb />
away, which prevents the advance <lb />
as long as they can get it at less <lb />
than its value. <lb />
Hundreds of thousands of bales <lb />
are being pledged to the Southern <lb />
Cotton Association for enough <lb />
to forte the price to its value very <lb />
s on; unless buyers can continue to <lb />
bpi yours that is not pledged at <lb />
