Six months later Elizabeth stood <lb/>
alone in her luxurious suit of rooms <lb/>
rereading the letter which had <lb/>
brought her home. The half year <lb/>
she had spent with her sister, Paul <lb/>
having suddenly determined on go- <lb/>
abroad. He had sent her his <lb/>
commands very briefly a week after <lb/>
she reached her sister's side, not <lb/>
even giving her his foreign address, <lb/>
merely informing her that his valet, <lb/>
went with him. <lb/>
I told ran the letter, <lb/>
am not yet ready to return. But <lb/>
I have asked you to precede me, that <lb/>
you might receive my twin brother, <lb/>
the fellow of whom I spoke at our <lb/>
last parting. He has turned up, <lb/>
greatly to my surprise, will <lb/>
with you tomorrow. Treat him <lb/>
kindly for my <lb/>
Next evening when she heard the <lb/>
newcomer's step in the hall she <lb/>
came out, calmly to meet <lb/>
him. His resemblance to Paul <lb/>
found less marked than she had an- <lb/>
This man was broad of <lb/>
shoulder, deep of chest, with a well <lb/>
poised head and frank, happy <lb/>
eyes. Then she perceived that in <lb/>
features, height and general color- <lb/>
the similarity was exceedingly <lb/>
striking. He might well been <lb/>
taken for Paul, though the voice <lb/>
was fuller than her husband's and <lb/>
far more resonant. <lb/>
good of you, said <lb/>
the stranger joyously, welcome <lb/>
the prodigal. I may call you Eliza- <lb/>
beth, may I not I'm Beverly Van- <lb/>

His warm, strong fingers drew her <lb/>
quickly to him, and lie pressed on <lb/>
her lips an eager kiss. It was only <lb/>
the joy of a returned wanderer, <lb/>
told herself, not seeing the passion- <lb/>
ate look of admiration which <lb/>
fastened on her lithe, rounded <lb/>
figure as she preceded him to tho <lb/>
library. And indeed Elizabeth's <lb/>
beauty was of the Juno type, com- <lb/>
instant attention. <lb/>
She found there was no <lb/>
chance to lie formal with Beverly. <lb/>
He brought his dogs into the <lb/>
and romped all over the library with <lb/>
them, drawing Elizabeth into the <lb/>
game, teasing her and jesting with <lb/>
her. <lb/>
Daily they rode together, and <lb/>
Elizabeth, putting both past and <lb/>
resolutely behind her, entered <lb/>
with all the delight of a perfect <lb/>
horsewoman into the joys of the ex- <lb/>
motion. <lb/>
Beverly's mount seemed often <lb/>
half horse, half tiger, frequently <lb/>
starling capriciously at a leaf and <lb/>
Writhing angrily on the bit. <lb/>
Once as Elizabeth watched her es- <lb/>

and angered horse a voice whispered <lb/>

And, indeed, Elizabeth herself <lb/>

to it as, an hour later, <lb/>
magnetic, compelling tones <lb/>
brought before her the desert <lb/>
speeding to his rendezvous <lb/>
I tho love but <lb/>

The word shocked <lb/>

faded. In it's place Beverly rose <lb/>
from the piano and came swiftly to- <lb/>
ward her, his eyes aflame. <lb/>
stood still. She must <lb/>
face this man coolly, indifferently. <lb/>
He must not guess that she, the up- <lb/>
right Elizabeth, longed to crawl <lb/>
across the room to him and lay her <lb/>
head on his shoulder. <lb/>
go away, she <lb/>
said bravely, locking her hands to- <lb/>

Then from its spoiled city of <lb/>
peace her self rose blindly. <lb/>
She could not him to leave her. <lb/>
She had for the moment lost all <lb/>
power of speech, but she caught a <lb/>
carved ivory fan from the mantel- <lb/>
and struck him heavily, cruel <lb/>

him stagger back from her. <lb/>
Then she found speech. <lb/>

with exceeding bitterness. <lb/>
Beverly, wiping blood from his <lb/>
face, received the blow very strange- <lb/>
His eyes shone as those of <lb/>
do who have been a kiss. <lb/>
His action was stranger. He tore <lb/>
the covering from his right <lb/>

scar. <lb/>

There was honor enough, however, <lb/>

The county of Anson has <lb/>
just paid them sixty dollars apiece <lb/>
for working them six months over <lb/>
time on the chain gang. These three <lb/>
men were convicted at the <lb/>
term, 1904, of Richmond county <lb/>
Superior court of some <lb/>
sentenced to twelve months on the <lb/>
Ai-. county chain gang. They <lb/>
were taken to Anson county <lb/>
at and turned over to the super- <lb/>
of the convict cam p. Later <lb/>
in the term of court the presiding <lb/>
judge reduced the men's sentences <lb/>
to six months, but the Anson county <lb/>
officers were never notified of the <lb/>
fact, so they kept the men at work <lb/>
road building for a whole year. They <lb/>
made claim against the county for a <lb/>
dollar and a quarter a day for their <lb/>
over time, but Dually compromised <lb/>
their cases for ten dollars a month. <lb/>
We reckon they got good pay for <lb/>
their labor. They were clothed, fed <lb/>
and housed during the six months <lb/>
and now get sixty dollars in a lump <lb/>
what their lawyer charged <lb/>
them. Had they been working on <lb/>

A BABOON HERO. <lb/>
An a Monkey <lb/>
In Africa. <lb/>
The German naturalist, Herr <lb/>
tells this story of his ad- <lb/>
venture with baboons in <lb/>
dogs, beautiful, slender <lb/>
greyhounds, accustomed to fight <lb/>
successfully with hyenas and other <lb/>
beasts of prey, rushed toward the <lb/>
baboons, which from a distance <lb/>
looked more like beasts of prey than <lb/>
like monkeys, and drove them <lb/>
up the precipices to right and <lb/>
left. But only the females took <lb/>
flight. The males turned to face <lb/>
the growled, beat the ground <lb/>
with their hands, opened their <lb/>
mouths wide, showed their glitter- <lb/>
teeth and looked at their ad- <lb/>
so furiously and malicious- <lb/>
that the hounds, battle hardened <lb/>
and usually bold, shrank back dis- <lb/>
and almost timidly sought <lb/>
safety beside us. <lb/>
we had succeeded in stir- <lb/>
ring them up to show tight the <lb/>
of the monkeys had changed <lb/>
considerably, and when the dogs <lb/>
charged a second time nearly all the <lb/>
herd were in safety. <lb/>
one little monkey, about <lb/>
half a year old. had been left be- <lb/>
hind. It shrieked loudly as the dogs <lb/>
rushed toward it, but succeeded in <lb/>
gaining the top of a rock before <lb/>
they had arrived. Our dogs placed <lb/>
themselves cleverly, so as to cut off <lb/>
its retreat, and then we thought <lb/>
that they would catch it. <lb/>
was not to be. Proudly <lb/>
and with dignity, without hurrying <lb/>
in the least or paying any heed to <lb/>
us, an old male stepped down from <lb/>
the security of the rocks toward the <lb/>
hard pressed little one, walked to- <lb/>
ward the dogs without betraying the <lb/>
slightest fear, held them in check <lb/>
with glances, gestures and sounds <lb/>
that seemed almost like intelligible <lb/>
speech, slowly climbed the rock, <lb/>
picked up the baby monkey and re- <lb/>
treated with it before we could <lb/>
reach the spot and without the <lb/>
slightest attempt to prevent him on <lb/>
the part of the dogs. <lb/>
the patriarch of the troop <lb/>
this brave and unselfish <lb/>
the other members, densely <lb/>
crowded on the uttered sounds <lb/>
which I had never before heard from <lb/>
baboons. Old and young, males and <lb/>
females, roared, screeched, marled <lb/>
and bellowed all together, so that <lb/>
would have thought that they <lb/>
were struggling with leopards or <lb/>
other dangerous beasts. <lb/>
learned later that this was the <lb/>
battle cry. It was intend- <lb/>
ed to intimidate us and the dogs; <lb/>
possibly also to encourage the brave <lb/>
old giant who was running into such <lb/>
evident danger before their <lb/>
Youth's Companion. <lb/>
Acid, and Water. <lb/>
Acids have a strong affinity for <lb/>
water, which they will even extract <lb/>
from any substance containing it <lb/>
with they are brought in con- <lb/>
tact ; hence when an id comes in <lb/>
contact with the mucous membrane <lb/>
of the mouth and throat the watery <lb/>
secretion which keeps these parts <lb/>
moist and flexible is so far absorbed <lb/>
as to give rise to that dry, harsh and <lb/>
stringent sensation which is com- <lb/>
spoken of as the <lb/>
mouth, and so as a result a copious <lb/>
supply of fresh saliva is produced. <lb/>
Mineral acids, by their chemical <lb/>
action, not only draw the mouth <lb/>
and set the teeth on edge as they <lb/>
are taken, but also injure the <lb/>
el of the unless the <lb/>
is taken to sink them in <lb/>
through a glass tube or quill. <lb/>
His Punishment. <lb/>
Father has gone into the <lb/>
pantry unexpectedly and finds <lb/>
aged ten, stealing <lb/>
Now, William, what do you mean by <lb/>
this Do you know that the law <lb/>
punishes people for small offenses <lb/>
you stole once and did not <lb/>
get <lb/>
father. Yon stole mother's <lb/>
my son, but, remember, I <lb/>
got severe punishment for that. <lb/>
got a life sentence and am at it<lb/>
Quito Another <lb/>
Uncle of wear- <lb/>
diamonds, don't you think it <lb/>
would be more becoming to pay your <lb/>
tailor's bills <lb/>
if I paid my tailor's <lb/>
bills how could I afford to <lb/>
And if people didn't buy <lb/>
diamonds what would keep the <lb/>
merchants from starving to <lb/>
death <lb/>
Uncle you don't pay <lb/>
for your diamonds either. <lb/>
now you are wander- <lb/>
from the point. <lb/>
Two Professionals. <lb/>
When Professor of Vi- <lb/>
was asked if he had any sons <lb/>
he answered, <lb/>
what professions have they <lb/>
chosen <lb/>
howl and two was <lb/>
the laconic reply. <lb/>
A couple of his sons were preach- <lb/>
and the other two were doctors. <lb/>
A Strange Threat <lb/>
Policy holders in one of the <lb/>
life insurance companies are <lb/>
receiving with their notices of <lb/>
due a little pamphlet sighed by <lb/>
the president, which he warns <lb/>
that any insurance that <lb/>
may be passed and any statement <lb/>
may lie uttered reflecting against <lb/>
the management or of the <lb/>
company will affect the interest of <lb/>
every policy holder <lb/>
Evidently he is perfectly serious <lb/>
about it. but in view of the unsavory <lb/>
secrets which he and the other <lb/>
of have been <lb/>
compelled to before the in- <lb/>
committee in New York, <lb/>
his suggestion that the policy balder <lb/>
lie still and let the go on <lb/>
unchecked is rather curious. <lb/>
To those who pay his a <lb/>
year salary and furnish him with <lb/>
campaign contributions, lobby funds <lb/>
and other little luxuries, be imputes <lb/>
such a low order of intelligence that <lb/>
after going on the stand and admit <lb/>
ting that he has been deceiving them <lb/>
for years, he coolly addresses to <lb/>
them the threat that if they don't <lb/>
keep quiet they may be hurt worse <lb/>
than they have been. <lb/>
If there is anybody who wants the <lb/>
companies reformed, it is the policy <lb/>
holders. They are the investors, <lb/>
the owners. They are the ones whose <lb/>
welfare and the welfare of whose <lb/>
wives and children depend upon the <lb/>
wisdom and economy with which the <lb/>
affairs of the companies are <lb/>
They know, as well as the <lb/>
dent knows, that there will have to <lb/>
be a tooth pulling in the companies, <lb/>
and that it is going to hurt all over; <lb/>
but they also know that they will be <lb/>
vastly better off when the tooth is <lb/>
North American. <lb/>

That is a city that <lb/>

goes there must realize that he must <lb/>

thousands who are struggling for <lb/>
success. Where one young man rises <lb/>
above the waves many fail and are <lb/>
lost sight of. It is particularly true <lb/>
In New York, that there is a <lb/>
