An Indian Boy's With a Wolf <lb />
In Old Newfoundland. <lb />
With the following somewhat <lb />
gory scene Theodore Roberta opens <lb />
his story of old Newfoundland, <lb />
of boy <lb />
struck again with his flint knife, and <lb />
again the great wolf tore at is <lb />
shoulder. The eyes of the boy <lb />
fierce as those of the boast. Neither <lb />
wavered. Neither showed any signs <lb />
of pain. The dark spruces stood <lb />
above them, with the shadows <lb />
of night in their branches, and the <lb />
western sky was stained red where <lb />
the sun had been. Twice the wolf <lb />
dropped his antagonist's shoulder <lb />
in a vain attempt to grip the throat. <lb />
The boy, pressed to the ground. <lb />
Hung himself about like ii dog and <lb />
repeatedly drove his- clumsy weapon <lb />
into the wolf's shaggy side. At last <lb />
the tight ended. The great timber <lb />
stretched dead in awful <lb />
His fangs gleamed like <lb />
ivory between his scarlet jaws and <lb />
black lips. A shimmer of white <lb />
menaced the quiet wilderness from <lb />
the recesses the half shut eyelids. <lb />
n moment the boy lay still, <lb />
with the fingers of his left hand <lb />
buried in the wolf's mane and his <lb />
right hand a blot of red against the <lb />
wolf's side. Presently, staggering <lb />
on bent legs, he went down to the <lb />
and washed his mangled <lb />
and shoulder in the cool water. The <lb />
shock of it cleared his brain and <lb />
steadied his eyes, lie waded into <lb />
the current to his middle, stooped <lb />
to the racing surface and drank <lb />
Strength flooded back <lb />
to blood and muscle and the slender <lb />
limbs regained their lightness. <lb />
this time a few pale stars <lb />
gleamed on the paler background of <lb />
the eastern A long linger streak <lb />
of red, low down on the hilltops, <lb />
still lightened the west. The hoy <lb />
saw nothing of the changing beauty <lb />
of the sky. He returned to the dead <lb />
wolf and set about skinning it with <lb />
his rude blade. He worked with <lb />
skill and speed. Soon head and pelt <lb />
were clear off the red can-ass, and, <lb />
collecting his arrows and bow, he <lb />
flung the prize across his shoulder <lb />
and started along a faint trail <lb />
through the spruces. <lb />
rapidly for nearly <lb />
an hour the boy came out on u small <lb />
meadow with tires. Nineteen <lb />
or twenty conical wigwams made of <lb />
birch poles, bark and caribou hides <lb />
stood about the meadow. Two <lb />
women who were broiling meat at <lb />
the lire looked from the shaggy, <lb />
blood stained pelt to the stalwart <lb />
stripling. They cried to him softly <lb />
in tones of love and admiration. <lb />
Now give me my man de- <lb />
the boy. <lb />
stalwart the chief of the <lb />
village, strode from the dark in- <lb />
of wigwam, <lb />
eyes gleamed at the sight of his <lb />
boy's lorn arm and the white teeth <lb />
of wolf. he cried. <lb />
He turned to the women. <lb />
he repented. this be <lb />

Those by Shoplifter Keep D.- <lb />
To detect the female shoplifter <lb />
obi to be the easiest thing in the <lb />
world. Nowadays her wiles call out <lb />
I he lynx eyed vigilance of lady de- <lb />
says Answers. <lb />
They are in our big drapery and <lb />
furnishing they <lb />
have a busy time. <lb />
The shoplifter, bear in mind, is <lb />
not, as a rule, the homeless creature <lb />
in rugs. She is a fashionable butter- <lb />
fly, who flutters about the most ex- <lb />
pensive stalls. She has a <lb />
smile, a patronizing air <lb />
and the majestic grace of a newly <lb />
presented And she <lb />
sweeps crowds <lb />
wearing a bag skirt and a belt of <lb />
fish hooks. <lb />
This hook device is ingenious. <lb />
The shoplifter wears them level <lb />
with the knee underneath her loose <lb />
and skirts. They are spaced <lb />
far enough apart to keep them <lb />
from becoming entangled. To the <lb />
inner side of the underskirt a <lb />
band of oiled silk is sewn. This, <lb />
with similar bands around the <lb />
knees, saves both the thief and her <lb />
skirts from being hooked and per- <lb />
the hooks themselves to hang <lb />
free. <lb />
The thief who wears these fish <lb />
honks wears also two little <lb />
projections at the back of the <lb />
French heels of her shoes. With <lb />
these she picks up handkerchiefs, <lb />
j silk and other materials of <lb />
a like nature and raises them be- <lb />
her skirts to the other hooks. <lb />
All this can be done by an expert <lb />
in the manner <lb />
possible, beneath the eyes of <lb />
the detective, without giving that <lb />
individual the slightest intimation <lb />
of what is <lb />
Another thief uses a large hook <lb />
and heavy sinker, these being <lb />
pended beneath the skirts and <lb />
of being raised or lowered by <lb />
means of a small reel carried inside <lb />
the shoplifter's pocket. The <lb />
knock the article to be stolen oil <lb />
the counter as if by accident and <lb />
stands over it. With one hand she <lb />
proceeds to lower the hook <lb />
until it touches the floor and <lb />
catches the blouse or piece of silk <lb />
there. Then up conies the hook <lb />
with the stolen goods, and the shop- <lb />
lifter walks quietly away. <lb />

u valid claim to their consideration, <lb />

was duly painted by n London artist, <lb />
