London fortunately covered <lb />
with red brick a number of <lb />
boys were playing cricket. Sudden- <lb />
there came a loud <lb />
like the combined droning of thou- <lb />
sands of bees, and a great stone <lb />
larger than a man's fist whizzed <lb />
across the center of the pitch and <lb />
I itself in u bank. Almost <lb />
immediately it was followed by an- <lb />
other and then a third. <lb />
Although they waited in hiding <lb />
for some time, there was no <lb />
of the mysterious missiles. The <lb />
question then arose, Where could <lb />
they have come from. The nearest <lb />
house was quite yards away, and <lb />
a machine to have sent these large <lb />
stones whirling at such a frightful <lb />
pace over this distance would be <lb />
rather an extraordinary article of <lb />
furniture for a suburban villa. So <lb />
the cause of this remarkable occur- <lb />
yet requires explanation. <lb />
In same district a few years <lb />
back four young men were in <lb />
a room playing whist. Suddenly, <lb />
after midnight, the door, which <lb />
ad been latched, opened slowly <lb />
it had reached its fullest limit. <lb />
In surprise the players looked up, <lb />
but no one was standing in the door- <lb />
way. Then, ere one of them could <lb />
move, the door slowly closed itself <lb />
again. Immediately one of the <lb />
men jumped up, pulled the <lb />
floor open and stared up and down <lb />
the hall, but there was absolute <lb />
and no one about. <lb />
Some years ago a gentleman was <lb />
sealed at a table busily writing. At <lb />
the moment he was alone in the <lb />
house. Suddenly he heard the pat- <lb />
of feet outside the door and then <lb />
the sound of R dog barking. Going <lb />
outside the room, he saw to his <lb />
prise that his dog found its way <lb />
from the garden into the house and <lb />
for some reason was violently bark- <lb />
Crash The room behind him was <lb />
suddenly in darkness, and a smell <lb />
of escaping gas pervaded the air. <lb />
Directly he understood what had <lb />
happened and hurried to seal up the <lb />
broken pipe of the chandelier. The <lb />
latter was lying in a thousand pieces <lb />
on the floor. <lb />
But for the mysterious instinct <lb />
that caused the dog to enter the <lb />
house and attract this gentleman's <lb />
attention he would probably have <lb />
been killed by the falling chandelier, <lb />
for he had been sitting directly be- <lb />
neath it. <lb />

There are some sharp politicians <lb />
South Carolina. The campaign <lb />

a lively contest in prospect between <lb />
