Revolutions and riots are to be <lb/>
deplored, it is hard to get Amer- <lb/>

Sunday morning <lb/>
Russia's internal troubles as in- <lb/>

If the bill for a reformatory for <lb/>
youthful criminals fails to pass at <lb/>
this legislature it will not be the <lb/>
fault of the friends of the movement. <lb/>
It is a pleasure to learn that <lb/>
editor of the Progressive Far <lb/>
who recently went to New York <lb/>
to confer with the publishers of a <lb/>
new magazine relative to a position <lb/>
they bad offered, has decided to re- <lb/>
main at his post in North Carolina. <lb/>
The offer he declined was editor-in <lb/>
chief of the new magazine at a <lb/>
of a year and later on a <lb/>
share in the profits of the magazine. <lb/>
A party here from another town <lb/>
in which barrooms operate tells it is <lb/>
ft Strikes OS that the legislature <lb/>
has made great mistake in doing <lb/>
sway with the reading of the journal <lb/>
mi each day of the proceedings of <lb/>
the day before. The verification of <lb/>
the journal is left to a committee Its <lb/>
members may not be posted on what <lb/>
was done, but they pass upon it- <lb/>
Were the journal read in open <lb/>
any member interested in a <lb/>
measure about which a mistake bad <lb/>
been made would be much more apt <lb/>
to detect that mistake than would <lb/>
the committee hurriedly looking <lb/>
over the records of the preceding <lb/>
day. We are afraid this <lb/>
will be the cause of many mistakes <lb/>
being made by this legislative body. <lb/>
Another mistake we think this leg- <lb/>
has made is the leaving so <lb/>
much power in the hands of com- <lb/>
The whole body seems to <lb/>
be run by the committees. The <lb/>
rule that any bill which receives <lb/>
favorable report from the committee <lb/>
to which it has been referred shall <lb/>
for that reason be tabled without <lb/>
further investigation is a bad one. <lb/>
It puts too much power in the bands <lb/>
of the committees end eliminates to <lb/>

course this story is told for effect, <lb/>
and it is very amusing to those who <lb/>
know better. We really would like <lb/>
for somebody to try to find the <lb/>
twenty-five vacant houses Green- <lb/>

now and then Friday the lower <lb/>

On a train on the Western road <lb/>
the other day, when it stopped at <lb/>
Barber Junction, was a man and <lb/>
his wife and two small children, <lb/>
their destination being Barber's. <lb/>
The man had a dog tied in the bag <lb/>
gage car and when the train stopped <lb/>
hi went back for his dog and took <lb/>
it off the train, leaving his wife and <lb/>
children to get off as best they j <lb/>
could. The woman had a child in <lb/>
her arms and another by her side <lb/>
that was probably about months <lb/>
old, and the care of the children, <lb/>
with some bundles, so delayed bar <lb/>

AN EXCITED ANGLER. <lb/>
He Lost His Head For Awhile, but <lb/>
Landed His Fish. <lb/>
If there is any place requiring a <lb/>
cool head it is when one is in a <lb/>
light boat or canoe angling for heavy <lb/>
fish in deep or swift water. Undue <lb/>
excitement has cost many a life <lb/>
such circumstances. <lb/>
A curious example of the outcome <lb/>
of undue excitement has just been <lb/>
related to me by a fact, <lb/>
the individual himself. <lb/>
Unfortunately for my friend, <lb/>
though a man of thirty-five <lb/>
yet only once previous to this <lb/>
had be experienced the joys <lb/>
of angling. <lb/>
Business took him up near the <lb/>
pine woods, and between trains, aft- <lb/>
his business bad been transacted, <lb/>
he was invited by two of his <lb/>
to try the And <lb/>
off they started, he throwing out his <lb/>
lure and within a few moments get- <lb/>
ting a vicious tug at his line <lb/>
bent his rod and set his reel screech- <lb/>
The tug on the line, the bend- <lb/>
of the rod and the screeching, <lb/>
whirring too much for him, <lb/>
and, giving a spasmodic leap, he <lb/>
cleared the boat and landed feet first <lb/>
on the bottom of the lake, that was <lb/>
covered with live feet of water, <lb/>
holding fast meanwhile to the rod. <lb/>
The cool water calmed bis nerves at <lb/>
once, and, being a six footer, he <lb/>
ply elevated his chin and arms and <lb/>
in his own fashion began to <lb/>
the rod and reel. The be- <lb/>
to leap and run. When he turn- <lb/>
ed his head toward the boat to ask <lb/>
for advice as to the proper way to <lb/>
handle the fish, no one was to be <lb/>
seen in the boat. Both his friends <lb/>
had just simply rolled off their seats <lb/>
and were guffawing with laughter; <lb/>
the only thing to he seen by him <lb/>
were two corncob pipes that his <lb/>
friends had removed from their <lb/>
mouths and held aloft while they <lb/>
roared with amusement. <lb/>
He landed the fish. I asked him <lb/>
what it weighed. was a <lb/>
he replied, <lb/>

HE OBEYED ORDERS. <lb/>
After They Had Been Interpreted by <lb/>
Ingenious <lb/>
A smart officer belonging <lb/>
to a cavalry corps in India was sent <lb/>
on sick leave to the convalescent <lb/>
of Simla and recovering <lb/>
his health among the hills there <lb/>
was robbed of his heart and in re- <lb/>
turn captivated the charming thief. <lb/>
The young fellow proposed and was <lb/>
accepted, and with all possible dis- <lb/>
patch the wedding day was fixed. <lb/>
But the colonel of expectant <lb/>
bridegroom's regiment was strongly <lb/>
opposed to the lieutenant marrying <lb/>
and telegraphed an unwelcome <lb/>
at to the amorous sub. <lb/>
The chagrined soldier handed tho <lb/>
peremptory message-to Ilia fair one. <lb/>
She glanced at it and then, with a <lb/>
becoming blush of sweet simplicity, <lb/>
am more than glad, dear, that <lb/>
your colonel so approves of your <lb/>
choice, but w hat a hurry he is in for <lb/>
the wedding I don't think can <lb/>
ready quite so soon, but I'll try, <lb/>
for, of course, the colonel must lie <lb/>

plan we have made. You see, he <lb/>
says at <lb/>
ho does, replied <lb/>
the lady, looking up with an arch <lb/>
smile, it is you who don't seem <lb/>
to understand it. When the colonel <lb/>
says at what does he <lb/>
mean but get married immediately <lb/>
What else, indeed, can he possibly <lb/>
mean <lb/>
else, indeed, de- <lb/>
exclaimed the ardent lover, <lb/>
rejoicing in the new reading, which <lb/>
he received with the utmost alacrity. <lb/>
So forty-eight hours had scarcely <lb/>
passed before the colonel received <lb/>
the orders have <lb/>
been carried out. We wore joined at <lb/>
World. <lb/>
A Concord boy was cut in two <lb/>
and his body mangled almost beyond <lb/>
recognition by a freight car under <lb/>

things there will be fewer of these <lb/>
accidents. <lb/>
