discredited North Carolina's record <lb />

There are some people who will <lb />
steal at every opportunity, but who <lb />
ever thought there was a man living j <lb />
who would steal flowers f r a grave <lb />
in a cemetery This has been going <lb />
on for years and a newly made grave <lb />
at Greene Hill; if covered with beau- <lb />
flowers, is almost sure to lie <lb />
robbed. Sunday afternoon <lb />
man happened to visit his plat rather <lb />
late the afternoon and caught a <lb />

this practice is not new; it has been <lb />

The cemetery flower thief must <lb />
exist around every town. At least <lb />
there have been instances almost <lb />
like the above in Greenville. We <lb />

Roosevelt has found an imitator <lb />

Republican nominee for Senate in <lb />
that county, visiting the <lb />
homes of and taking meals <lb />

It is surprising that the Southern <lb />
people, are displaying so much <lb />
apathy in regard to the coming <lb />
election. To our mind it is <lb />
the important one that has occurred <lb />
i many years. The South will go <lb />
solid for Parker, but this fact should <lb />
not cause any man to loose interest. <lb />
No Southern man can afford to miss <lb />
the opportunity of casting a vote <lb />
against Roosevelt, <lb />

The Democratic ticket, as we have <lb />

There was no secrecy or <lb />

They are worthy of the sup- <lb />
port of every citizen who desires to <lb />
secure and preserve the blessings <lb />
of good government. From the very <lb />
moment they were nominated there <lb />
has been no doubt as to who were <lb />
the Democratic candidates. <lb />
were oar candidates then, they are; <lb />
now, and will be on the day of j <lb />
With us there has been no <lb />
shifting of candidates, no nickering, <lb />
no trading, no taking one down and <lb />
putting another up, and indeed, j <lb />
there can be none, for our candidates <lb />
were put up by the people and no- <lb />

them. They are now going from <lb />
place to place in the open day and I <lb />
in speech telling the what <lb />
they stand for and what may be i x- j <lb />

Now look on the other. It is said j <lb />
we are to have an opposition ticket I <lb />
on day of election Who knows <lb />
what that ticket will be Will it be I <lb />
Republican or Populist or a little of <lb />
both, or of neither Who can j <lb />
now say what names will be on it , <lb />

was this done We know how Mr , <lb />
W. J. Dr. R. J Grimes, I <lb />
Dr. J. E. Nobles and Mr. W, L. i <lb />
Smith were retired. They retired <lb />
themselves, lie it said to their credit <lb />
they all published cards declining <lb />
to permit their names to be used in <lb />
any such connection and for any <lb />
such purpose. It was manifest that <lb />
undue liberty Lad been taken with <lb />
their names and they were prompt <lb />
to say so. But how about the other <lb />
changes that are said to have been <lb />
made. Who made them and by <lb />
what authority What secret agree- <lb />
and influences brought them <lb />
about Who knows What other <lb />
changes are to be made before the <lb />
election and what influences are to <lb />
bring them about Who knows <lb />
This much, however, we do know. <lb />
The people have had nothing to do <lb />
with making this Republican <lb />
list combination ticket, nor with <lb />
making the changes in it. They <lb />
have not been consulted, nor per- <lb />
to take any part in it if they <lb />
had been so inclined to do. We <lb />
the assertion that out of the <lb />
four thousand white votes in Pitt <lb />
county are not today forty who <lb />
can name the whole of the mongrel <lb />
ticket they will be asked to vote. <lb />
On the other hand we venture the <lb />
further assertion that there not <lb />
forty voters who cannot name the <lb />
men on the Democratic ticket. One <lb />
ticket will be of a trade. <lb />
The other will be the work of the <lb />
people Voter, which will you take <lb />
It is for you to say. <lb />
Herald Loses Faith. <lb />
The New York Herald has been <lb />
doing some marvelous stunts since <lb />
the nomination of Judge Parker. <lb />
Up to a few days ago the Herald has <lb />
been supporting the <lb />
date ardently and predicting his <lb />
election Now the Herald has lost <lb />
faith and declares editorially that <lb />
President Roosevelt's election is <lb />
most a foregone conclusion. The <lb />
Herald is a great political <lb />

Fifty Fatal Spree. <lb />
Fifty drunken goats caused a <lb />
great deal of excitement in Old <lb />
Forge. Some men dumped a <lb />
of fermented wheat in a vacant <lb />
lot near where a number of <lb />
were pasturing. <lb />
The odor arrested the attention of <lb />
the goats as being very tempting. <lb />
They swarmed down the mountain <lb />
and had a glorious time eating the <lb />
wheat, The effect on the <lb />
proved fatal, as they had eaten so <lb />
much that they were poisoned. The <lb />
residents feel the loss severely, as <lb />
they derived their milk supply from <lb />

It's saying a good deal when the <lb />

The Political Apathy May Not Be <lb />
After All. <lb />
The of interest in political <lb />

Usually a presidential <lb />
year, above all others, <lb />
out the people and arouses their en- <lb />
to a high pitch, but this <lb />
year apathy i- the word all along the <lb />
line. In speaking of matter to- <lb />
day, an observant <lb />
am not at all distressed over <lb />
the failure of the to become <lb />
excited over politics this year. That <lb />
shows that they hare something <lb />
else on their it is a good <lb />
sign. It is not necessary for people <lb />
to go wild over politics in order to <lb />
the and when the <lb />
country is in such condition that the <lb />
people lire too busy to attend all the <lb />
political meetings it is safe to say <lb />
that things are in pretty good shape- <lb />
I am in politics, as all <lb />
good citizens should be, but I have <lb />
learned that political activity should <lb />
not be a predominating <lb />
