diseases can be prevented if followed. <lb />
Any one interested can got a copy of <lb />
the pamphlet free by <lb />
Richard II. Lewis, Raleigh, N. C. <lb />
The story that comes from <lb />
ville sounds almost like the days of <lb />
Sherman's Georgia. <lb />
It said the First Regiment of <lb />
North Carolina returning <lb />
from developed a <lb />
of toughs who left the train at <lb />
and proceeded to plunder <lb />
several stores in the vicinity of the <lb />
depot. Is that the kind of big stand- <lb />
army we are fostering <lb />
President Roosevelt's letter of ac <lb />
is out, and as an epistle of <lb />
length it takes undisputed rank. He <lb />
occupies a good bit of space in tell- <lb />
that the Democratic party has no <lb />
issues, and at even more length pa- <lb />

High tariff and increased <lb />

hint <lb />
is indeed a great pleasure to <lb />
welcome to this of <lb />
representatives of the great <lb />
can press, one of the mighty forces <lb />
in the up building and strengthen- <lb />
of a sturdy American citizen- <lb />
ship. <lb />
leaders who have made a <lb />
thoroughfare through history down <lb />
which through all their <lb />
frame will march with giant strides <lb />
have been men who, though <lb />
moved by hasty of the <lb />
hurried judgment of the people, <lb />
were, yet guided in all their public <lb />
acts by the knowledge of what the <lb />
deliberate mature judgment of <lb />
the people would be. So the great <lb />
papers are those which anticipate the <lb />
careful judgment of the majority. <lb />
Though the instant judgment of the <lb />
people may be often at the <lb />
ripe and final decision is always for <lb />
the right. And the part of leader- <lb />
ship is to know the right and hon- <lb />
patriotically, fearlessly and <lb />
zealously advocate it. Just as long <lb />
as the press can discern and lead the <lb />
unhurried and well-considered <lb />
of people, so long will its <lb />
power grow mightily, and so long <lb />
will it hold its place in front ranks <lb />
of the unfaltering and vigorous <lb />
march of national progress. To the <lb />
up building of the power of the press <lb />
and to the best use of that power <lb />
you have devoted yourself. <lb />
am not taking up your time <lb />
with any of the great issues upon <lb />
which our party, through its plat- <lb />

peals to the people for endorsement, <lb />

The indebtedness of the municipal <lb />
governments are still piling up, <lb />
bond issues are increasingly <lb />
and the people have not the <lb />
satisfaction, in many of a <lb />
full equivalent in improvements for <lb />
the money expended. And the Fed- <lb />
government is leading the race <lb />
of great expenditures. Ere long the <lb />
people will demand a reform in ad- <lb />

they will do it now if they <lb />
are made to appreciate the whole <lb />

H. L. CARR<lb />
MAYO COMMISSIONER <lb />
As next Thursday is convention, <lb />
and as it is the duty of the delegates <lb />
to select or nominate five county <lb />
commissioners to serve for the next <lb />
two years, I write this to name a <lb />
from the North side of the river <lb />
who would make us an ideal com- <lb />
missioner. <lb />
We all know that our roads are <lb />
in bad condition, and getting worse. <lb />
I travel the roads right much and <lb />
know this is We need a set of j <lb />
commissioners who will lend some ; <lb />
help to the road supervisors and <lb />
overseers in this effort to bet-1 <lb />
roads, or at least to work in <lb />
with them in order that the j <lb />
best results may be accomplished. <lb />
I will suggest to the convention <lb />
as one the commissioners from <lb />
the North side the name of Lewis A. <lb />
Mayo. The people of Pitt county <lb />
know Mr. Mayo, and know him to <lb />
be a good an intelligent <lb />
man and a true democrat. Mr. <lb />
Mayo has been a magistrate for the <lb />
last ten or twelve years, and has <lb />
been a road supervisor during that <lb />
time, and he knows what the county <lb />
needs along that line. If something <lb />
is not done in the next two veal's <lb />
the roads will become impassable in <lb />
bad weather. The road <lb />
and overseers arc powerless to do <lb />
unless they have the cooperation of <lb />
the board of commissioners. <lb />
I will also second the name of <lb />
John L. Woolen of i <lb />
was mentioned some time ago as-one <lb />
of the board. We all know Sir. Wooten <lb />
to be a financier of the first class., <lb />
and if nominated would render <lb />
county valuable service in <lb />
department. <lb />
Let the delegates nominate these <lb />
two men and we will not suffer <lb />
thereby. <lb />

Some days ago at a hotel table we <lb />
beard the conversation of a number <lb />
of gentlemen concerning certain <lb />
conditions in the South, and the <lb />
conversation interested us very much. <lb />
One of the gentlemen was from Ohio, <lb />
and of course the conversation had <lb />
to take a turn at lynchings in die <lb />
South. The gentleman from Ohio <lb />
did not say anything harsh about <lb />
the South, nor about the lynching <lb />
here. the contrary he said that <lb />
for the same crimes for which <lb />
are lynched in the South, they would <lb />
be as he put it, in the <lb />
North. He said that the people in <lb />
the North do not really care as much <lb />
tit as do the people in the <lb />
South, lie says the people here <lb />
understand the race better than the <lb />
people there do. But the most inter- <lb />
part of the conversation turn- <lb />
ed up on the question of reading. <lb />
The gentleman from Ohio said that. <lb />
he has much in the J North <lb />
and in the South and so has had <lb />
opportunity to make observations of <lb />
the people in the different sections. <lb />
He said that the people in the North <lb />
read many times more than the <lb />
pie in the South. <lb />
Some one, he said, made close ob- <lb />
on a railroad car of the <lb />
number of people reading as they <lb />
leave a city. In the North on a train <lb />
leaving a city he observed that <lb />
most every one is reading; but in <lb />
the South on a train leaving a city <lb />
very few are ling. One person <lb />

the North you can buy a paper for i <lb />
penny while in the South you have <lb />
to pay five cents for one of equal <lb />
size. It was not admitted, however, <lb />
that the price of paper could not be <lb />
the cause of such a discrepancy be- <lb />
tween the reading of the people of <lb />
the two sections. The gentleman <lb />
from Ohio stuck to his proposition, <lb />
that the people in the North like to <lb />
read much more than the people of <lb />
the South. From his view of the <lb />
matter the people of the South are <lb />
too they talk too much <lb />
