COUNTY CROPS <lb />
GREENVILLE SCHOOLS. <lb />
drive through the rural sections <lb />
of this county is a rare treat. We <lb />
believe that no county in the state <lb />
has more fertile fields or more in- <lb />
men of brown who till <lb />
Notwithstanding the recent co- <lb />
and daily thunderstorms <lb />
the crops in this section are most <lb />
excellent. Political upheavals and <lb />
partisan discussions disturb not the <lb />
even tenor of our way and despite <lb />
all these things, Pitt county <lb />
are forging to the front. If cotton <lb />
brings prices this fall and <lb />
crops continue as they now are there <lb />
The people of Greenville and <lb />
surrounding community are greatly <lb />
pleased with success of our Grad- <lb />
ed schools here both white and <lb />
colored. We consider ourselves <lb />
fortunate in having as our Supt. <lb />
Prof W. U. Dove, who is a great <lb />
educator and a Christian gentleman. <lb />
Last year, which was the first year <lb />
of the school system in our <lb />
town, proved the system to be a good <lb />
one, four hundred students having <lb />
been enrolled during the year. This <lb />
is a great increase over the number <lb />
that attended school last rear. <lb />

Law without public sentiment to <lb />

On any question it is always well <lb />

vastly broader and deeper than any <lb />

the ruling power <lb />
whether it be man or <lb />

that is imperialism. Whenever the <lb />

Editor <lb />
As the time is drawing near <lb />
primaries and county conventions to <lb />
be called for the selection of <lb />
dates to the various offices of Pitt <lb />
county and also a legislative tie-ct. <lb />
I therefore leg your indulgence for <lb />
a few unsolicited remarks in <lb />
of L. W. Tucker for sheriff. <lb />
He is a young man of high <lb />
and of a great business capacity, <lb />
which his public career of the past <lb />
four or five years abundantly proves, <lb />
and stands without contradiction. <lb />
Some may say that he is rather young <lb />
to shoulder the responsibilities of <lb />
the office of high Sheriff of Pitt <lb />
county, but I declare unto you, that <lb />
it is not right, adequate, or just, <lb />
that a man ho by the height of his <lb />
ambition, ski and self <lb />
has reached the goal of maturity in <lb />
physical, mental and business <lb />
ties earlier than the average man, <lb />
that he should be haltered and tied, <lb />
so to speak, his inferiors might <lb />
reach his equal. <lb />
On the contrary, Mr. Editor and <lb />
friends, I do say and verily believe, <lb />
that a man of such eminent <lb />
and broad business qualifications as <lb />
Mr. Tucker, having served the office <lb />
of sheriff as deputy for four or five <lb />
years with such a marked degree of <lb />
success, makes him throughly <lb />
competent and to serve the <lb />
office itself to the entire satisfaction <lb />
of the people of Pitt county, <lb />
thereby be honored himself and an <lb />
honor to Pitt And when the <lb />
Democratic county convention is <lb />
called upon to name a date for <lb />
sheriff. I believe the people will be <lb />
glad to show him the honor of rise- <lb />
as a unit and with one accord <lb />
say, nominate L. W. Tucker by <lb />
acclamation. <lb />
M. T. <lb />

and complains that county officers <lb />
doing so little to enforce the <lb />
Watts law, leaving the execution of <lb />
liquor laws to the Federal <lb />
ties, who last month captured forty <lb />
illicit an increase of <lb />
eight over the preceding month It <lb />
seems that the county authorities <lb />
through the state have taken no in- <lb />
in the enforcement of the <lb />
Watts law, and yet it is a State stat- <lb />
and it the business of the local <lb />
officials to it. If the <lb />
were as indifferent as <lb />
those of the counties, the liquor laws <lb />
would be defied and trampled under <lb />
foot from one end of the State to the <lb />
other, It i tote hoped that the <lb />

The temperance k <lb />
God, is dominant in North Carolina. <lb />
That was very clearly shown at <lb />
Greensboro, and the triumph at <lb />
emphasizes the power and <lb />
effectiveness of the movement. Hut <lb />
the v is not yet won by any <lb />
he liquor men are astute <lb />
and wily and tin long and <lb />
experience in politics gives then <lb />
a advantage. They know <lb />
the importance of attending the <lb />
and selecting delegates <lb />
to their interests. Our people <lb />
are n it so well up on this game. If <lb />
we are not awake alert the <lb />
people will win the Legislature <lb />
and neutralize all the legislation <lb />
that has been so hardly wrung from <lb />
our law-makers. The matter of <lb />
importance now before us is <lb />
to see. that men are nominated who <lb />
will faithfully carry oat the will o <lb />
the moral element of North <lb />
No matter how strong the pres- <lb />
sure brought to bear, if our people <lb />
will let it clearly and fully under <lb />
stood they will positively not <lb />
vote for a man who is not an out- <lb />
spoken and avowed advocate of <lb />
legislation, the other sort <lb />
will not be nominated, for the slate- <lb />
makers have their ears to the ground <lb />
and they will see that the men the <lb />
people want will be nominated The <lb />
politicians arc perfectly willing to <lb />
give us the right sort of men as <lb />
if we only demand <lb />
them, and we must demand them. <lb />
The fate of the temperance cause is <lb />
now in the hands of the citizens, <lb />
