the lawyers there had previously <lb/>
announced that they would not try <lb/>
any cases before him all the cases <lb/>
wore continued only the motion <lb/>

denied the charges that had been <lb/>
made against him and declared his <lb/>
intention of the mat- <lb/>

being a very dignified way to take <lb/>
revenge. If lawyers or other people <lb/>

looks like bis position to <lb/>

Crime Increasing. <lb/>
Fewer social questions are asked <lb/>
more frequently than, what is the <lb/>
increase of crime The national <lb/>
census bureau is seeking an answer <lb/>
to this inquiry, his undertaking to <lb/>
secure a record of all the persons <lb/>
who are sentenced to the various <lb/>
jails, and other <lb/>
ons in the United States during the <lb/>
year 1904. <lb/>
The wardens of the state prisons <lb/>
and the sheriffs of the counties are <lb/>
being requested to act as special <lb/>
agents to report certain facts con- <lb/>
every delivered into <lb/>
their custody. Some counties have <lb/>
not been from. In some per- <lb/>
haps there are no jails, in others <lb/>
perhaps the local jails are no longer <lb/>
used, in still others the sheriffs have <lb/>
possibly neglected the matter. But <lb/>
the records of census bureau and <lb/>
the resulting statistics will not be <lb/>
complete until all are heard from, <lb/>
and it is hoped that the pressure <lb/>
of other business will not cause the <lb/>
the sheriff of any county to block <lb/>
