Another Gen Spiked. <lb />
In reply to a clipping from the <lb />
North Carolina Christian Advocate <lb />
of which Rev. Blair is ed <lb />
circulated this week la the <lb />
interest of open saloons, as opposed <lb />
to dispensary in Greenville, <lb />
We to the public the fol- <lb />
low in, personal letter to J. <lb />
A. <lb />
I regret to learn <lb />
your letter just received <lb />
bar should attempt to use <lb />
said good Intent, <lb />
to the advantage Of their cause. <lb />
I trust yon may gain the <lb />
I am today preparing an editorial <lb />
which will appear in <lb />
Advocate, and I send you <lb />
advance sheet, so that you <lb />
use it and this letter as you <lb />
w best. IT. M. <lb />
OF <lb />
i. <lb />
we denominate an attempt <lb />
of the barkeepers and their <lb />
in a few to OS <lb />
what we have had to say against <lb />
the dispensary, as a campaign <lb />
document In favor of the open <lb />
saloon. Whatever we have had to <lb />
say against the dispensary has <lb />
been on general principles, and <lb />
with no thought of giving comfort <lb />
to the of the , saloon. <lb />
dispensary is bad, but the open <lb />
saloon is infinitely worse, and <lb />
where it becomes necessary to <lb />
choice between the two, <lb />
there should be no hesitation on <lb />
the part of Christian men. <lb />
The only question is that of <lb />
expediency in dealing with a <lb />
that Is sapping the very life of the <lb />
and nation, . e see no <lb />
reason why, In most communities, <lb />
Under the Wits Law, we should <lb />
i -o to stop at a <lb />
in this matter. It is con- <lb />
ceded by all real friends of <lb />
the dispensary <lb />
must finally yield to the demands <lb />
enlightened Christian <lb />
which ultimately drive i <lb />
out. Therefore, where we have i <lb />
good fighting chance we <lb />
array all our forces- in a <lb />
to the whole business. <lb />
The e be some exceptions. <lb />
but we are t f the that <lb />
in all our towns at present <lb />
it would be almost as easy to drive <lb />
out the saloons altogether to <lb />
drive the business into a <lb />
As to any who have attempted <lb />
to use what we had to say in <lb />
to dispensary, as in any way <lb />
favoring the open saloon US a mat- <lb />
of preference, have only to . <lb />
that they are a <lb />
hypocrites, and, in keeping wit. <lb />
saloon element general. <lb />
would not at the <lb />
any crime by which to foster their <lb />
wicked business, Their business <lb />
to their coffers by taking <lb />
human weakness, and <lb />
need not b surprised to find <lb />
them distorting utterances of <lb />

The sudden acquisition of wealth <lb />
and the equally as sudden of <lb />
riches through the heavy in <lb />
cotton futures have given people in <lb />
section of the country an <lb />
to make interesting <lb />
of strenuous humanity. The <lb />
gaining of large money, with its ac- <lb />
of independence, is <lb />
bound to have its effect on the char- <lb />
of any man. Usually it is <lb />
is apt to make one selfish, <lb />
and not so considerate of other <lb />
pie. His circle of acquaintances, <lb />
increases, but his heart gets colder <lb />
and ho knows fewer friends. He <lb />
loses naturalness, and narrow <lb />
that he had hitherto concealed crop <lb />
out in jarring boldness, lie has <lb />
been put to a great test, and he has <lb />
become a loser at the point where he <lb />
should have gained most. He be- <lb />
comes a snob within his limitations <lb />
and is secretly laughed at. This <lb />
does not apply to all men who make <lb />
much money suddenly, nor does it <lb />
apply to those who acquire it by <lb />
slow, laborious methods, but most <lb />
men do turn fools when money comes <lb />
unexpectedly. Yet losing money <lb />
has a far worse effect, of course. <lb />
in any guise is bad enough, <lb />
but the poverty that has come <lb />

sort that wrecks a man's peace, <lb />
ages him and makes him a poor <lb />
In a word, one looks in <lb />
for the smallest element of good that <lb />
has come to this part of the world <lb />
through speculation. In rare in- <lb />
stances it has enabled a man to be <lb />
bettered financially, hut day after <lb />
day it shows oftenest and excited <lb />
lot of humanity that has to pay a <lb />

Mr. Nolan had received a long <lb />

the wisdom of vindicating his honor <lb />

he's more than me <lb />

The of Curia <lb />
Bits and Docking. <lb />
The horse, the most useful of all <lb />
animals, is the one marked for the <lb />
most of men's ill treatment; For <lb />
the most part housed in ill lighted, <lb />
ill ventilated and ill <lb />
worked to its full capacity, <lb />
eared for only to tut degree that <lb />
selfish interest prompts, the animal <lb />
u delivered over as the unprotected <lb />
object of the unrestrained passions <lb />
of man. The average man fails <lb />
to understand that <lb />
have a nervous system, among <lb />
them to a marked degree the horse, <lb />
and that were he to govern his own <lb />
temper he could, with a little pa- <lb />
get control of the horse's <lb />
nervous system and make out of it <lb />
a servant vastly more efficient than <lb />
it is under the system in which he <lb />
beats and jerks and drives it to dis- <lb />
traction. <lb />
A short walk in any city will dis- <lb />
cover many blind horses. Why <lb />
There are no blind cows <lb />
And yet the sight of the <lb />
one naturally is as good as that of <lb />
the other. The difference is simply <lb />
that the horse from the beginning <lb />
has been abused, ill housed, over- <lb />
worked and worked under <lb />
that have driven him blind. <lb />
His eyes are shut in by blinders at <lb />
each side, for which there is no use <lb />
but to satisfy the caprice or fashion <lb />
of man. So, his vision interfered <lb />
with and deprived of air, the wonder <lb />
is that with the other treatment he <lb />
gets ho is not blind Be- <lb />
sides this, in other eases his neck <lb />
is almost pulled out of joint by over- <lb />
head that raise his face <lb />
to the air and turn his eyeballs to <lb />
the glare of the sun unprotected. <lb />
Or, on the other hand, deprived of <lb />
he is bitted curb <lb />
that pulls his jaws to his breast and <lb />
tortures him in this fashion. And <lb />
then, according to the spreading <lb />
fashion of the day, he is subjected <lb />
to the most cruel of all practices, <lb />
docking, which not merely tortures <lb />
in the practice, hut leaves him to <lb />
the torment of flies for the rest of <lb />
his life. It is the merciful man <lb />
that is merciful to his beast, and if <lb />
it is the merciful that obtain mercy <lb />
we have, as a people, some way to <lb />
come before we get that blessing. <lb />

OUR FIRST REPUBLIC. <lb />
It Was Not States, bat I <lb />
Louisiana <lb />
Tut first republic in this <lb />
to succeed in recognition of <lb />
Its independence was. of course, the re- <lb />
public whose proud capital Is Washing- <lb />
ton. But there was an earlier one <lb />
which died soon after its birth, of <lb />
which little or nothing is said in our <lb />
American historian. <lb />
When France, in ceded <lb />
to Spain, the subjects of King <lb />
XV. objected to the transfer <lb />
without their consent. The local gov- <lb />
submitted the question to the <lb />
council, which, under the lead of <lb />
de rose in re- <lb />
volt called a convention <lb />
of the people at New Orleans, while the <lb />
new Spanish governor was on way <lb />
to the colony, and the convention <lb />
n delegate to go to to dis- <lb />
the French king from his course. <lb />
Louis XV. however, rebuffed the <lb />
gate and sent back word that the <lb />
must the authority of <lb />
Spain. <lb />
It was then that the people of <lb />
resolved on a radical course. <lb />
the night of Oct. the rebels <lb />
took possession of the French forts and <lb />
the gates of the town in the name of <lb />
the republic of Louisiana. The old <lb />
French governor offered no resistance, <lb />
while the new Spanish governor took <lb />
refuge on a ship and sailed for Havana. <lb />
On Oct. the council at New <lb />
Orleans adopted a formal declaration <lb />
of Independence, officially named it- <lb />
self the republic of Louisiana, elected <lb />
and prepared a <lb />
written constitution. This interesting <lb />
government lasted from October, 1708, <lb />
to July, 1700, when a Spanish squadron <lb />
of twenty-four vessels, with an army of <lb />
men, arrived at New Orleans. <lb />
The new republican state was destroy- <lb />
ed and live republican leaders, <lb />
were put to death. <lb />
Then all the republic's official papers, <lb />
including its declaration of <lb />
and constitution, were burned in <lb />

It is not the highest forms of <lb />
plants always produce <lb />
greatest effect in this way. of <lb />
the most striking scenes upon the <lb />
earth owe their characteristic <lb />
to mosses and lichens. The <lb />
famous of Green- <lb />
land, which for miles north- <lb />
ward from Cape York, derive their <lb />
splendid color from the growth of <lb />
red lichen which covers their faces. <lb />
The cliffs between 1,700 and <lb />
feet straight from the <lb />
edge, and, being composed of <lb />
gray granite, their aspect would be <lb />
entirely different from what it is <lb />
but for the presence of the lichen. <lb />
Coming to less magnificent but <lb />
not less beautiful scenes, the rocky <lb />
pass called the Golden Gate in the <lb />
Yellowstone National park owes its <lb />
rich color and its name to the <lb />
low lichen covering its <lb />
and the indescribable of the <lb />
great hot spring terrace arise main- <lb />
from the presence of minute <lb />
plants flourishing in the water that <lb />
overflows them. <lb />
