Two Dickinson Avenue <lb />
Destroyed. <lb />
Just before o'clock Sunday <lb />
morning lire started the kitchen <lb />
to the building on Dickinson ave- <lb />
occupied by Mr. J. T. A brains <lb />
as a boarding house. Mr. Abrams <lb />
Bays he was awakened by a noise <lb />
caused by something fulling. His <lb />
room was full smoke and look- <lb />
out he saw the kitchen was on <lb />
tire. The boarders in the Louse <lb />
were awakened and the alarm <lb />
given. <lb />
The lire had made good head- <lb />
when discovered and burned <lb />
so rapidly it could not be stopped. <lb />
There was lime to save only a <lb />
of the content of the lower <lb />
floor, and everything up shuts was <lb />
lost. Some of the boarders lost <lb />
everything they had, only having <lb />
time to put on a clothes. <lb />
a short while the flames <lb />
spread to the of Mr. S. <lb />
B. Wilson, was only a few- <lb />
feet and was also <lb />
destroyed. The crowd that had <lb />
gathered in the meantime succeed- <lb />
ed in letting all the furniture out <lb />
this building. <lb />
The residence of C. A. <lb />
White on one side and of Dr. <lb />
Ernul on the other, narrowly; <lb />
escaped. A wood house on <lb />
White's Sparks <lb />
fell the roof of the old Corey <lb />
building, further the avenue, <lb />
set it on lire but it was easily <lb />
put out. <lb />
The total is about <lb />
Mr. had insurance <lb />
on his furniture. <lb />
United Warship Needed Within <lb />
Easy Range. <lb />
Washington, Aug. <lb />
state department today received a <lb />
cablegram from Minister <lb />
in which he stated advices from <lb />
the American consults at <lb />
and Beirut were to the effect that <lb />
while the Americans those <lb />
places are of suffering <lb />
from an uprising at any time the <lb />
situation was not at the time of <lb />
sending the dispatches as grave as <lb />
earlier reports would indicate. Mr. <lb />
has been instructed to <lb />
notify the government <lb />
that it most keep the peace, and <lb />
that it will be held to a strict ac- <lb />
countability for any lawless act- <lb />
toward citizens. <lb />
The navy department has re <lb />
a cablegram from Rear Ad- <lb />
Cotton saying that the <lb />
Brooklyn and Ban Francisco will <lb />
sail from Genoa for Beirut <lb />
They have been delayed by coaling. <lb />
The order for them to proceed to <lb />
Beirut has not been changed. <lb />
MAD WITH LOVE. <lb />
Died Prom Mosquito Bite. <lb />
Durham, N. August <lb />
William a young white <lb />
man, died at his home a few miles <lb />
from this city Saturday night, <lb />
his death being caused by blood <lb />
poison brought on by the bite of <lb />
a mosquito. It was two weeks <lb />
ago Saturday that the Insect bit <lb />
Mr. Strayhorn the little finger. <lb />
In a short while the ringer in- <lb />
flamed and blood poison develop <lb />
Physicians derided to <lb />
late his in but in <lb />
his condition became such that <lb />
afraid to attempt the <lb />
Young Man Kills His Sweetheart <lb />
and Himself. <lb />
Richmond, Vi., Aug. <lb />
Herbert B. Bates, son of assistant <lb />
city engineer, shot and killed <lb />
Miss Gentry at the young <lb />
lady's in this city this morn- <lb />
and then killed himself. <lb />
Bates was madly in love with the <lb />
young woman, and it is believed <lb />
that it was because of her refusal <lb />
of his proposal of marriage that <lb />
the tragedy resulted. Bates ac- <lb />
companied Miss Gentry and a lady <lb />
friend to last evening re- <lb />
apparently in the best of <lb />
.-pints. He left his home, a Short <lb />
distance from that of Miss Gentry <lb />
at o'clock this morning and went <lb />
down town, secured a pistol and <lb />
came back to the borne of his <lb />
sweetheart. He van into <lb />
the parlor at o'clock two <lb />
shots were heard. Members of the <lb />
family rushed to the rooms, the <lb />
place being tilled with smoke. <lb />
was dead, the <lb />
bullet having entered the right <lb />
temple and Bates was in the throes <lb />
of death. He lived three minutes. <lb />
Miss Gentry was a music teacher <lb />
and very pretty and popular <lb />
Bates was note clerk in the First <lb />
National Bank and was an <lb />
in every respect. <lb />
