The Cotton Convention. <lb/>
A eon vent ion of <lb/>
Rumens null factors has called <lb/>
lo meet in New Orleans February <lb/>
Kith to consider means lo <lb/>
the in or lo lake <lb/>
some other step that will insure a <lb/>
price for the staple. <lb/>
several years these conventions <lb/>
have ban called, have met <lb/>
to reduce the <lb/>
and devote attention to <lb/>
other crop,, and yet just us regular- <lb/>
it, the season rolls we <lb/>
the acreage mid <lb/>
another <lb/>
of cotton on Every <lb/>
who the question at <lb/>
all knows it is ruinous to continue <lb/>
to raise enormous crops of cotton <lb/>
for less than coat of production. <lb/>
And yet it is continued, con- <lb/>
by men who know <lb/>
such a policy result <lb/>
impoverishment. <lb/>
What good do these convent ions <lb/>
As soon us the delegates <lb/>
reach home the farmer to <lb/>
say to himself, acreage will <lb/>
ho reduced; most of the farmers are <lb/>
, to plant leas cotton this year, <lb/>
I Will plant more, tho price is <lb/>
certain to Isn't the <lb/>
truth. If that is not the case, how- <lb/>
ls it the is increased <lb/>
instead of being reduced. <lb/>
It is probably a good thing to <lb/>
cull attention to the facts the <lb/>
case as com cut ions have done lie- <lb/>
fore, but it is not likely that <lb/>
New Orleans convention will ac- <lb/>
any more than its <lb/>
News. <lb/>

Rawls tired again. The three <lb/>
shots were as near together <lb/>
as they could After <lb/>
shot Rawls turned off, holding to <lb/>
one of his legs. I asked if he was <lb/>
hurt, he said and <lb/>
went on toward street. Hyman <lb/>
laid King down on the ground <lb/>
left. I think King was hit by <lb/>
both shots but am not positive, i <lb/>
was doing business at the stables. <lb/>
King was there often. Will <lb/>
and a colored man named Ed <lb/>
were in the stables at the time <lb/>
of homicide. not <lb/>
seeing one else. <lb/>
did not <lb/>

how long before. He had been <lb/>
absent from the county sometime <lb/>
and had returned a few days l. <lb/>

I did not know King was after <lb/>
when I took him out, King <lb/>
asked me to stop when had <lb/>

draw pistol on Bawls in road <lb/>
King unhitched team to <lb/>
buggy, he did not strike Bawls; <lb/>
they cursed each other. Do not re <lb/>
member seeing at stables <lb/>

agreement was that the man be <lb/>
left at my stables the trouble <lb/>

think King was arrested for as- <lb/>

long ago I do not remember it <lb/>
At shooting Monday <lb/>
i I saw only King, Hyman, Rawls, <lb/>
and Harris. Harris did <lb/>
not out of stables until <lb/>
I called to go for doctor. <lb/>
I did not sec Sheppard or While <lb/>

the shooting, I did not sec a <lb/>
young man come around Hie corn <lb/>

It was nothing unusual for <lb/>
to pass through there. It was <lb/>
a near way to go to <lb/>

I don't remember words, King <lb/>
made two steps toward stables. <lb/>
Hyman struck King and knocked <lb/>
off bis hat. <lb/>
they may have passed another lick <lb/>
or two, don't Bawls <lb/>
was standing over near corner of <lb/>
stables and shot King. Two more <lb/>
shots were tired. I don't remember <lb/>
who shot first or second. I saw <lb/>
Bawls pull pistol, he bud hand in <lb/>
pocket as he MUM down alley. I <lb/>
saw pistol just before he shot. <lb/>
When he shot Bawls was near <lb/>
stables on outside. I was in stable <lb/>
door, Bawls was to my right. <lb/>
Think Bawls was of IS feet from <lb/>
Hyman King. Kiwis shot <lb/>
twice. King was bit in left leg. <lb/>
don't know whether ho was hit <lb/>
elsewhere. I to Mr. King <lb/>
and then wont after doctor, Keel <lb/>

by King at same time taking his <lb/>
pistol. Rawls Hyman were <lb/>
talking when they came down alley. <lb/>
Cross working <lb/>

how long had been there. Was <lb/>
there Saturday before and hitched <lb/>
up horse for Keel and King, did <lb/>
not hear them say whore they were <lb/>

back. Do not remember about <lb/>
being there. They brought <lb/>
a mule back with them. Do not re- <lb/>

near to King, ha bad there <lb/>
long. King myself were the <lb/>
only ones there at the time. Hyman <lb/>
and did not come clear up <lb/>
to stable but when they got about <lb/>
middle door of room Hyman <lb/>
asked King to stand up. When <lb/>
King got up he made a step or two <lb/>
towards them, they met about <lb/>
of bar-room. After passing a <lb/>
lick or two Hyman and King <lb/>
clinched moved over to left of <lb/>
stable door. was over on <lb/>
right hand side. I WM still in <lb/>
stable when shot. Several <lb/>
people were outside but they run. <lb/>
I don't remember any one except <lb/>
Skinner. I was where I could see <lb/>
any one in alley. Remember seeing <lb/>
Cherry after shooting was over, <lb/>

I was not more than half way <lb/>

were three quick shots. <lb/>
Rawls was feet away- <lb/>
over toward ls-11 post. King held <lb/>
pistol outside of arm and <lb/>
tired toward alley way where <lb/>
Rawls was standing. King fired <lb/>
first shot. Ho seemed trying to <lb/>
get something out of his pocket <lb/>
while Hyman was pushing him <lb/>
King held on to pistol after <lb/>

I know Henry Keel, knew John <lb/>
King. Keel was dealing horses <lb/>
and mules 1890. I remember <lb/>
the day of shooting <lb/>
and King but was not present. I <lb/>
was town the Saturday evening <lb/>
before and drove up to Keel's <lb/>
stable. was there at the <lb/>
time. Some time was consumed <lb/>
here by argument of objection <lb/>
raised by State that the testimony <lb/>
of this witness was collateral <lb/>
matter. Court decided testimony <lb/>
was competent. Keel turned <lb/>
buggy around and told colored <lb/>
to bring nut his fast horse. Keel <lb/>
asked me if met Is. I told <lb/>
him yes, I met on bridge. I <lb/>
asked what was the matter, he said <lb/>
nothing. Keel told me put up my <lb/>
horse and he and King drove off. <lb/>
I was there when they returned. <lb/>
Keel of King and <lb/>
they were gone half hour. <lb/>
I Keel what this meant, he <lb/>
replied, we got what we went after. <lb/>
Keel helped unhitch mule. Keel <lb/>
walked up and down with hand <lb/>
behind him while and <lb/>
were talking. I took <lb/>
arm and told him not have any <lb/>
thing to do with it, he told me not <lb/>
have anything to do with it. King <lb/>
