KNEW HIS OWN VALUE. <lb />
rot Hot <lb />
Before the war, in the days of <lb />
slavery, a New York Jeweler of a <lb />
prominent family, who can be called <lb />
Mr. X., bad owing to him a bill of <lb />
from a reputedly wealthy <lb />
family in the south. Time after <lb />
time the bill was rendered, but there <lb />
was no response, and finally Mr. X, <lb />
as he chanced to have other <lb />
taking him beyond the Mason <lb />
and Dixon line, decided to call at <lb />
the house of debtor in New Or- <lb />
leans and see if he could get some <lb />
satisfaction for claim. <lb />
On arrival there he found that <lb />
his debtor was in a bad way <lb />
and had little money, <lb />
though running an expensive <lb />
A proposition was made <lb />
that Mr. X take in payment of his <lb />
bin a Jim, a very <lb />
bright fellow and considered to be <lb />
worth tally Jim was an ex- <lb />
pert horseman, and through all his <lb />
life had been working in the stables <lb />
of master. <lb />
Mr. X was in a quandary. His <lb />
abolitionist ideas prevented him <lb />
from being a slave owner, but his <lb />
natural anxiety to receive <lb />
for the bill due him almost demand- <lb />
ed that he should accept the slave <lb />
as payment. Finally a bright idea <lb />
suggested itself, and he called the <lb />
to him. <lb />
said he, am going <lb />
to be your new master. I do not <lb />
want to live here in the south and <lb />
look after you, nor do I wish to take <lb />
you to the north with me. Now I've <lb />
been thinking of this Will <lb />
you be honest, sober and attentive <lb />
to business if I set you up In the cab <lb />
trade in this city Will you turn <lb />
over every cent to me and not steal <lb />
from me If you promise, I will set <lb />
you up in business, and when you <lb />
send me the money that you earn I <lb />
will credit half of it to you. When <lb />
your half of the money above all <lb />
the expenses amounts to you <lb />
can buy your freedom, and then <lb />
can continue partners in the <lb />
or you can buy me If yon <lb />
do not want to make any promises <lb />
or if you will not keep the promises <lb />
that you may make, I will sell you, <lb />
and then you may get a hard mas- <lb />
Jim, of course, promised, and <lb />
what is morn remarkable, he kept <lb />
his word. Mr. X. bought for him <lb />
three cabs and as many teams, and <lb />
allowed him full management of <lb />
the business. <lb />
So well did Jim take care of the <lb />
enterprise that within a year he had <lb />
charge of nine cabs and several <lb />
teams of horses for each cab. He <lb />
sent his money regularly to New <lb />
York, and within two years his <lb />
share of the profits amounted to <lb />
over But still he made no <lb />
suggestion that any of his <lb />
. river for <lb />
Mr. X did not w to speak about <lb />
the matter to Jim, but he was <lb />
to get some cash value for the <lb />
slave. He accordingly sent a friend <lb />
to see Jim and find what was <lb />
the matter. The friend went to Jim <lb />
and said to <lb />
you have sent to Mr. X <lb />
nearly haven't <lb />
Maid Jim. <lb />
of that money will <lb />
be yours if you buy your freedom, <lb />
won't <lb />
said Jim again. <lb />
it will only cost your <lb />
to buy your freedom, and when you <lb />
do you will have left, and <lb />
can still continue in partnership <lb />
with Mr. X Why don't you buy <lb />

have stocked it with shells which I <lb />
obtained in many instances far out <lb />
at sea. My pearl shell farm covers <lb />
miles. Over most it <lb />
the water is shallow. In shallow <lb />

I ship my pearls to London in my <lb />

Experts in furniture are much <lb />
guided in their judgment to par- <lb />
by the wood which <lb />
are made. Mahogany furniture, <lb />
purporting to be much as two <lb />
centuries old, is subject to <lb />
mahogany was little <lb />
used in until about the <lb />
middle of the eighteenth <lb />
A colonial New England piece i <lb />
much more likely to tie of oak than <lb />
of mahogany, unless it belong to the <lb />
late colonial period. Mahogany was <lb />
a luxury even then, and oak was <lb />
used in ordinary households sat be- <lb />
at once moderate in <lb />
durable. <lb />
It is easy to tell whether a pro- <lb />
fessed European piece of walnut fur- <lb />
is genuine, by the quality of <lb />
the walnut. European walnut is a <lb />
denser and finer wood than moat of <lb />
our walnut. A piece of furniture <lb />
made of ash at points <lb />
is almost certain to be of American <lb />
manufacture, but a baring <lb />
beech at such points is likely to be <lb />
of European manufacture. Beech <lb />
is plentiful in Europe and relatively <lb />
scarce in this country, and with <lb />
American makers of furniture ash <lb />
la a cheap substitute for beech and <lb />
oak. A chair made entirely of beech <lb />
is almost certain to be of European <lb />
manufacture. Such chairs are often <lb />
beautiful in form and extremely <lb />
durable. Modern taste demands, <lb />
however, that the be stained <lb />
to imitate mahogany. <lb />
New woods have come into use of <lb />
late years, partly timber of <lb />
the sort long used in furniture <lb />
has become scarce, partly be- <lb />
cause modern machinery makes it <lb />
possible to work woods that in ear- <lb />
lier times could not be profitably <lb />
worked. Birch, which is tough, <lb />
crooked and difficult to work, is <lb />
coming into use for factory made <lb />
furniture. This wood warps easily, <lb />
but it looks well and serves the <lb />
needs of the factory makers. Aspen <lb />
also is coming into use for the man- <lb />
of furniture, though it, <lb />
too, is a crabbed wood, unfit to be <lb />
worked save by modern cutting <lb />
machinery. Another of the woods <lb />
that the furniture makers have been <lb />
driven to use is sycamore. It is fair- <lb />
abundant and cheap in tho United <lb />
States, and its markings are dis- <lb />
and beautiful, but it la <lb />
trustworthy because of its tendency <lb />
to warp. It is sometimes used a <lb />
veneer over less but more <lb />
trustworthy wood. Some of the <lb />
North river ferryboats are veneered <lb />
with sycamore. All of these <lb />
woods have been improved <lb />
for use in furniture -y <lb />
methods of rapid <lb />
Birch, sycamore and the other <lb />
crabbed woods a not used by the <lb />
cabinet makers because their <lb />
is made, and the labor and <lb />
expense of working these woods <lb />
tho aid of make <lb />
unprofitable for <lb />
furniture. Mahogany is much softer <lb />
and more easily worked than these <lb />
woods. Some New England folks <lb />
before the middle of the present <lb />
had a craze for furniture made <lb />
of ironwood, otherwise known <lb />
hornbeam, and cabinet made fund. <lb />
of this material is found now <lb />
and then in Connecticut The wood <lb />
Is regarded by modern wood work- <lb />
era as utterly unfit for working into <lb />
furniture. New York cabinet <lb />
avoid the use of beech, and it is <lb />
used in this country mainly for fine <lb />
tool handles, in planes and tho like, <lb />
just lignum is in furniture <lb />
casters, blocks for pulleys and other <lb />
small articles. <lb />
Very old furniture in cherry is <lb />
most as highly prized as mahogany, <lb />
