To-morrow morning will usher in j fa through the toil <lb/>

Since the day nearly nineteen <lb/>
years ago, when the angels <lb/>
of God accompanied by u throng <lb/>
of heavenly hosts, announced to <lb/>
the shepherds in the fields of <lb/>
the birth of the Savior of <lb/>
mankind, the heart has <lb/>
turned joyfully and with i lid an- <lb/>
to that day as a day <lb/>
of all others of rest and enjoyment. <lb/>
the day is not observed as it <lb/>
ought to be nor as believe the <lb/>
Creator -intended it should be. <lb/>
Instead of a day of thanksgiving <lb/>
and praise to God for his great <lb/>
love and kindness towards fallen <lb/>
man, it is turned by a great many <lb/>
into a of revelry and <lb/>
But we must recollect that <lb/>
human nature has always been, is, <lb/>
and always will be human nature, <lb/>
and we must not expect perfection. <lb/>
So let us all take it as a day of rest <lb/>
and enjoyment, for it is nothing <lb/>
but right that we should rejoice <lb/>
be glad. Men of all <lb/>
after the worry, vexation and <lb/>
anxiety of a year need a season of <lb/>
real free from all care. Our <lb/>
schools are closed for a whole <lb/>
and we hope the school <lb/>
will enjoy themselves. In- <lb/>
deed we feel sure that the average <lb/>
school boy will have his share <lb/>
fun and frolic. After four months <lb/>
of study and worry over books of <lb/>
various kinds, let him. as well as <lb/>
others, have his rest. Let him <lb/>
take it and enjoy it, return to <lb/>
his work with light heart and a <lb/>
good conscience. determined to do <lb/>
a better year's work next year than <lb/>
the past. And the teachers, too, <lb/>
poor, patient creatures. <lb/>
rest. After their hard and <lb/>
work, after the <lb/>
small pay, and little sympathy <lb/>
r , or <lb/>
I the store and room, <lb/>
cause his mind is constantly run- <lb/>
forward to the close of the <lb/>
season his accounts will be <lb/>
bin paid off and his <lb/>
old ledger laid aside. The editor <lb/>
is not like other folks. He, though <lb/>
incessantly surround- <lb/>
ed by duties extremely irksome, <lb/>
looks joyously through all to the <lb/>
time when the last paper for the <lb/>
year is issued and all left for him <lb/>
to do is to collect some bills, draw <lb/>
the line, count up his <lb/>
cash, smallest task of kick <lb/>
out a few dead beats and turn over <lb/>
a new leaf ready for a new year. <lb/>
And so we find ourselves to-day, <lb/>
the anticipations of the year <lb/>
most realized. <lb/>
In looking back through <lb/>
year just past there is cause for <lb/>
congratulation, that all the shoals <lb/>
of embarrassment and quicksands <lb/>
of debt have been avoided, and <lb/>
the annual voyage has been a <lb/>
prosperous one. The Reflector <lb/>
not made money enough to <lb/>
start a bank or to endow a college, <lb/>
but it Las paid its printers every <lb/>
Saturday night, always be- <lb/>
our first it baa met its <lb/>
bills as they fell due, it has pro <lb/>
for those who looked to it <lb/>
for a support, it owes no man any- <lb/>
thing but what it is able to pay. <lb/>
it has enough ahead to enjoy <lb/>
a right good Christmas and buy <lb/>
rations for two weeks. <lb/>
But, to speak seriously, to con- <lb/>
duct a country newspaper, make <lb/>
it worthy the name and acceptable <lb/>
to the people, is no idle play. <lb/>
There is hard worn about it that <lb/>
those uninitiated cannot realize, <lb/>
and we look back through the <lb/>
upon the scores of nighs in <lb/>
which the oil has been <lb/>
burned, almost as a dream. <lb/>
that this was intended only when <lb/>
the States failed to make such reg <lb/>
and was not intended to <lb/>
give Congress control of elections, i <lb/>
When several States satisfied the <lb/>
constitution they passed <lb/>
that Congress shall not in <lb/>
any manner interfere with times, <lb/>
place, or manner of holding <lb/>
except when the Legislature <lb/>
of any State shall neglect, refuse <lb/>
or be disabled by invasion or re- <lb/>
to prescribe the same, and <lb/>
North Carolina refused to ratify it <lb/>
on account of that clause. For a <lb/>
hundred years this principle was <lb/>
carefully guarded, but now a <lb/>
party is in control and has <lb/>
driven the people from its ranks, <lb/>
it seeks thus to override the spirit <lb/>
and principles of the constitution <lb/>
in order to keep itself in power. <lb/>
are glad that the more con- <lb/>
clement of the <lb/>
can is opposed to that <lb/>
it is very probable that enough of <lb/>
them will combine with the Demo- <lb/>
to defeat the measure. <lb/>
come to see us, we are <lb/>
one away. <lb/>
If yon want a nice <lb/>
Christmas present for your <lb/>

People of all professions, of all <lb/>
axes, of all ages, and of all colors <lb/>

But above all whom <lb/>
enjoy Christmas the young J <lb/>
are the ones. Well do me <lb/>
remember the days of our boyhood, <lb/>
how fondly we looked forward to <lb/>
the coming of Santa Clans, how <lb/>
impatiently we awaited the com- <lb/>

During the past year we and our <lb/>

Force Bill. <lb/>
Until a few days ago we were <lb/>
somewhat gloomy fearing that the <lb/>
Force Bill, advocated by Harrison, <lb/>
Reed, Lodge, Frye, Hoar Co., <lb/>
would become a law but now mat- <lb/>
seem to be brightening up a <lb/>
little. The Democrats are deter <lb/>
mined to fight it to the bitter end, <lb/>
and many of the Republicans seem <lb/>
to be giving away in their sup <lb/>
port. It has been known all along <lb/>
that some of the Republicans were <lb/>
opposed to it, but last Friday Mr. <lb/>
Stewart of Nevada came oat and <lb/>
boldly made a speech in <lb/>
to it, in which he takes a very <lb/>
sensible view. He opposed it on <lb/>
the ground that it would cause <lb/>
great race trouble in the South <lb/>
and would cause great damage to <lb/>
both the white man and the black <lb/>
man. Mr. Stewart was not one of <lb/>
the members counted on by the <lb/>
Democrats as opposed to it. As <lb/>
to the constitutionality of the bill <lb/>
the Philadelphia Record has an <lb/>
able comment on Senator Gray's <lb/>
speech in which he exposes <lb/>
of the Republican plea that <lb/>
the clause, States shall <lb/>

he went to s steel trap for the ins <lb/>
A young man named, W. H. <lb/>

Mr. Martin decided lo set both not <lb/>

was gone, having been broken loose <lb/>

He went little further to examine the <lb/>

Entertainment <lb/>
At In <lb/>
Last evening Prof. Dick, gave <lb/>
a public entertainment the closing <lb/>
exercises of his school for Christ- <lb/>
mas holidays. For of space <lb/>
we must omit printing the <lb/>
and confine ourselves to a short <lb/>
comments. <lb/>
The exercises opened by reading <lb/>
the minutes of the last meeting of <lb/>
the Athenian Society, of which Miss <lb/>
Lillie Wilson is President, and Miss <lb/>
Baker, Secretary. <lb/>
The Salutatory was rendered by <lb/>
Master Hugh in his own <lb/>
masterly style. <lb/>
The of the <lb/>
was rendered well by Misses <lb/>
Lula White, Tyson, Lina <lb/>
Sheppard, and Rosalind <lb/>
and reflected ere lit on both <lb/>
and teachers. <lb/>
was well read <lb/>
by Miss Minnie Cox. The <lb/>
by Master Richard White was <lb/>
quite short, but showed what a boy- <lb/>
can do. <lb/>
The Instrumental Solo, Fall <lb/>
imagine would <lb/>
really remind an old soldier of war <lb/>
limes. Master Forbes showed <lb/>
that boy's being small was no reason <lb/>
why he cannot speak. <lb/>
Recent <lb/>
read by Miss Pattie Smith was an <lb/>
interesting and instructive piece. <lb/>
Misses Sugg and Tints <lb/>
Ward gave a very beautiful <lb/>
mental three little <lb/>
girls can was recited by three <lb/>
little girls who seemed to enjoy it as <lb/>
well as anybody else. <lb/>
Miss Bettie recited in fine <lb/>
style, -Seven times <lb/>

little girls, each one baring one of <lb/>
the letters which compose the words. <lb/>
Alter this we another <lb/>
mental duet by <lb/>
Misses Annie and Bessie <lb/>
Harding. <lb/>
on Laura <lb/>
showed how sense of touch can <lb/>
be cultivated in a deaf, blind, <lb/>
and dumb person. <lb/>
The Instrumental <lb/>
was remarkably well <lb/>
don when we consider the size of <lb/>
misses who it. <lb/>
was recited by a <lb/>
Dumber of little girls, seventeen in <lb/>
number. <lb/>
Girls elicited much <lb/>
merriment and doubtless evinced <lb/>
more truth than poetry and showed <lb/>
well how fast girls change their <lb/>
Is. Rendered In Miss Novella <lb/>
by Mi- s Tuck- <lb/>
showed that the author had been <lb/>
reading State papers. <lb/>
was admirably <lb/>
rendered by Miss Lula White. The <lb/>
piece was doubtless by a mar <lb/>
man whose wife was indeed his <lb/>
better half. <lb/>
The song Live and Love <lb/>
by Misses Annie and Ora <lb/>
and <lb/>
put no Flowers on my papa's <lb/>
by Miss Lina Sheppard were well <lb/>
performed. <lb/>
Miss Annie Forbes gave us a beau- <lb/>
vocal solo. In the <lb/>
by Miss Maude Moore, some things <lb/>
were especially enjoyed. They were <lb/>
the young ladies the ties <lb/>
is the most prevailing <lb/>
style. The brilliant gem may be <lb/>
purchased from Mr. Rawls, and <lb/>
ties from Mrs. Ella Sheppard. <lb/>
One of the teachers seems to have <lb/>
become very partial to the <lb/>
St. Matthews clay was observed at <lb/>
the Institute by some or the ladies <lb/>
on Sunday, Dec. <lb/>
by Miss <lb/>
Carrie Latham, was an amusing <lb/>
It made some of us think <lb/>
of past days. Much good advice <lb/>
was given to young fellows starting <lb/>
on mission. Take heed, <lb/>
boys. <lb/>
The of the <lb/>
by Miss Myrtle Wilson, <lb/>
gave a vivid description of the future <lb/>
her schoolmates. <lb/>
Jolly an <lb/>
mental solo, was given by Misses <lb/>
Annie Sheppard and Annie . <lb/>
