are the expansion of the Monroe <lb/>
diet line, the disarmament of <lb/>
a climate and soil which enables us <lb/>
to cultivate, profit, a greater <lb/>
variety of products any other <lb/>
the world, or the same <lb/>
area, we will in near future see <lb/>
our State rivaling any other section <lb/>
in cultivation of fruits and <lb/>
grapes, and our farmers, the wealth- <lb/>
most prosperous in <lb/>
world. This is no of <lb/>
nation, but a result as sure to follow <lb/>
you did not propose to <lb/>
that dear girl last night, as you in <lb/>
tended to. Ah, my friend, I am <lb/>
afraid you were not fired by the <lb/>
vine spark of live. <lb/>
I was by her lather. <lb/>
often <lb/>
it in <lb/>
In this tiny and time when most <lb/>
people are so and when <lb/>
there is so much grumbling and so <lb/>
much that is calculated to hurt <lb/>
one's it is exceedingly <lb/>
pleasant to do basilicas with men <lb/>
who seem to be of souls. <lb/>
Recently we visited Wilmington <lb/>
or <lb/>
the and our visits were <lb/>
i quite successful, as a glance our <lb/>
advertising will show. As <lb/>
soon as the paper with the <lb/>
in it reached Wilmington, <lb/>
the largest advertisers in the entire <lb/>
wrote us enclosing a subscription <lb/>
the thanking us <lb/>
sincerely Tor the display of their <lb/>
advertisement and tor the <lb/>
manner which we refer- <lb/>
lo them. Now Ibis shows the <lb/>
proper spirit makes the poor <lb/>
j long-suffering editor reel that after <lb/>
all be has not lived in vain. A Tew <lb/>
advertisers seem to think that it is <lb/>
their special to make <lb/>
editor feel as bail as possible. They <lb/>
fail to see a single copy or the paper <lb/>
continuing their advertisement, it <lb/>
is not as prom men t as some other <lb/>
one or believe the <lb/>
brought them a single <lb/>
customer. In a word, they seem <lb/>
determined to make to the <lb/>
editor that be is requiring pay for <lb/>
something for which be gave <lb/>
return, not thinking that in this <lb/>
way do more than any one else to <lb/>
get returns the reasons that pen- <lb/>
will not deal with men of that <lb/>
d alter they find them. <lb/>
They an; actually the time <lb/>
that they will Mime <lb/>
able evidence the and will <lb/>
therefore talk of the influence the <lb/>
in the presence of its readers <lb/>
in such a way that make them <lb/>
anxious to get out or their store to <lb/>
avoid hearing a that they ad- <lb/>
mire reflected upon, thus by <lb/>
their own action, their advertise- <lb/>
is probably worthless to them. <lb/>
If, on the contrary, they would speak <lb/>
favorable of paper and of <lb/>
section, they would please their <lb/>
present customers and gain new <lb/>
ones. People dislike but <lb/>
admire, those who make the host of <lb/>
halves and quarters, I suppose. <lb/>

i fail to see a single copy or the paper <lb/>

do more than any one else to <lb/>
get returns for the reasons that <lb/>
will not deal with men of that <lb/>
d alter they find them. <lb/>
They are actually afraid the time <lb/>
that they will have some <lb/>
able evidence the benefit and will <lb/>
therefore talk the <lb/>
paper in the presence of its readers <lb/>
in such a way that make them <lb/>
anxious to get out of their store to <lb/>

This is a right strong rebuke to <lb/>
the few white bosses who rubbed <lb/>
their heads together in secret over <lb/>
at Elizabeth City and set up C. M. <lb/>
Bernard as the nominee of the <lb/>
Republican party. At the con- <lb/>
of colored men in Raleigh <lb/>
recently they declared that <lb/>
are the Republican and <lb/>
demanded that they should be <lb/>
recognized, but down here in First <lb/>
District they have ignored the no- <lb/>
entirely and did not ask <lb/>
who they wanted for their party <lb/>
candidate. If a handful of Gil- <lb/>
friends got together and <lb/>
asked him to run, he has just as <lb/>
much right to be called the <lb/>
of the Republican party as <lb/>
Bernard has, as they both seem <lb/>
to be in the same boat as to the <lb/>
of their getting before the <lb/>
people. However, Gilliam is <lb/>
honest enough to call himself just <lb/>
what he is, and says he is <lb/>
pendent Republican <lb/>
and proposes to be in the field <lb/>
until there shall be a Republican <lb/>
convention to nominate a regular <lb/>
candidate. As the now <lb/>
stands he has as much right in the <lb/>
field as the other man, and he has <lb/>
the best claim to the support of <lb/>
his party, for his color is the right <lb/>
shade to make him a Republican <lb/>

Will Back Home. <lb/>
The editor received a letter <lb/>
week from E. A. Davis, one of <lb/>
colored men who left here with <lb/>
last winter. Davis is <lb/>
last <lb/>
the <lb/>
the <lb/>
carpenter and having a good trade of <lb/>
course stood a much better showing <lb/>
than those who went as common <lb/>
laborers. He is at a little <lb/>
town in Louisiana. He says lie is <lb/>
doing a luge contracting business <lb/>
there, but his life has been threat- <lb/>
because he does better work <lb/>
than other contractor in the <lb/>
town. He says he would be much <lb/>
better satisfied at home and intends <lb/>
to come back after this year. <lb/>
To The Citizens of <lb/>
I wish to thank our friends out- <lb/>
side of the Baptist Church for their <lb/>
kindness in helping us to finish our <lb/>
church and for their kind offer to aid <lb/>
us in taking care of our Association. <lb/>
A good part the delegates and <lb/>
pastors may expected Wednesday <lb/>
evening, October 8th. Preaching <lb/>
that nigh, in our new room by Rev. <lb/>
Mr. Duke. The crowd will be much <lb/>
larger on Saturday and and <lb/>
of the delegates may not <lb/>
rive until Friday or Saturday. I <lb/>
hope those taking company will <lb/>
have supper at or as near six o'clock <lb/>
as possible. This is far better for <lb/>
the speakers and gives those taking <lb/>
company an opportunity to attend <lb/>
the exercises at night. I hope all <lb/>
who can will attend the meetings. <lb/>
A. D. <lb/>
L. Wyatt. <lb/>
Mr. W. A. or well <lb/>
remembered by our people as an ex- <lb/>
photographer, has sent the <lb/>
Reflector a photograph of Henry L. <lb/>
Wyatt, who was. the first soldier <lb/>
killed in the late war. The photo- <lb/>
graph was copied from an old <lb/>
i the young confederate. We <lb/>
showed it to a citizen of this town <lb/>
who remembered Wyatt and were <lb/>
told that the picture was a perfect <lb/>
likeness of him. Mr. is furn- <lb/>
copies of the picture at <lb/>
cents each. Wyatt went into the <lb/>
army from Pitt county, but belonged <lb/>
to the gallant old Edgecombe Guard. <lb/>
A great deal has been said in the <lb/>
State papers about Wyatt bis <lb/>
nativity, and this may not be void of <lb/>
interest. The person to whom <lb/>
showed the photograph said Wyatt <lb/>
was born in Richmond but came to <lb/>
Greenville to live with relatives when <lb/>
he was a very small boy. We sup- <lb/>
pose there are many persons here <lb/>
ho remember him. <lb/>

The Standard Keeper was around <lb/>
Monday testing the weights an <lb/>
measures of the town merchants. He <lb/>
kipped by the office and <lb/>
did sot stop to inquire if we bad a <lb/>
quarter weight for testing the <lb/>
of delinquent subscribers. <lb/>
On Thursday Sheriff Tucker show <lb/>
an account of sales that <lb/>
he made with D. Y. Cooper, <lb/>
the 23rd. He sold something <lb/>
over pounds at average of <lb/>
about cents, one lot bringing as <lb/>
high as SI cents and another SO <lb/>
cents <lb/>
Mr. J. J. Nobles left us s twig <lb/>

that shown a prolific production. Ia <lb/>

large, well formed bolls. He says <lb/>
his cotton had a splendid August <lb/>

The extension of the Scotland <lb/>
Neck A Greenville railroad is com- <lb/>
through to Kinston. That <lb/>
town will have a grand celebration <lb/>
over it on the 9th instant. In that <lb/>
respect Greenville is left behind. <lb/>
This town had more <lb/>
than a year but has never yet shown <lb/>
any public appreciation of it. <lb/>
Dropped Dead <lb/>
A colored girl about years of <lb/>
age, died very suddenly in this town <lb/>
last Friday. She bad been out pick- <lb/>
cotton all day and was returning <lb/>
home in the evening. Just before <lb/>
reaching borne she fell upon the <lb/>
ground in an unconscious condition. <lb/>
Parties with her picked her up and <lb/>
carried her into the house, but she <lb/>
was dead in a few moments. She <lb/>
had been heard to complain of the <lb/>
headache during the day. <lb/>
The New Firm. <lb/>
In announcing the new firm that is <lb/>
to open in Greenville the <lb/>
styled it as Young A The <lb/>
Wilson Advance corrects us and says <lb/>
Mr. C. W. is the partner of <lb/>
Mr. Young. Just a misunderstand- <lb/>
of he name on our part. The <lb/>
Advance further says they are a <lb/>
strong team, that they are the <lb/>
est firm in Wilson, have a branch <lb/>
store in Dunn and a large clothing <lb/>
in <lb/>
Correction. <lb/>
Two big errors got into one small <lb/>
local in last week. <lb/>
The first error was saying the county- <lb/>
canvass would open at Falkland on <lb/>
the 8th. The date is all right, but <lb/>
the place is Farmville instead of <lb/>
Falkland. The other error was in <lb/>
the list of appointments would <lb/>
be found in that issue. Through an <lb/>
sight the appointments be- <lb/>
put in type were left standing on <lb/>
a galley and did not get in the paper <lb/>
until when you can find them <lb/>
on first page. <lb/>
Bead Cures. <lb/>
Mr. B. F. Patrick told us Monday <lb/>
that Mr. A. P. Murray, of <lb/>
county, had cured barns of <lb/>
co for him this season, and made a <lb/>
success of every one of them. Since <lb/>
the curing was completed Mr. <lb/>
ray has remained and done all the <lb/>
grading and packing. From what <lb/>
has been sold good and satisfactory <lb/>
returns were made. Mr. Patrick <lb/>
goes to Oxford to day to sell several <lb/>
thousand pounds. He says Mr. <lb/>
Murray is the beet all around <lb/>
co man be has known. <lb/>
Will Come Back <lb/>
editor received a letter last <lb/>
week from E. A. Davis, one of the <lb/>
colored men who left here with the <lb/>
last winter. Davis it. a <lb/>
carpenter and having a good trade of <lb/>
course stood a much better showing <lb/>
than those who went as common <lb/>
laborers. He is at a little <lb/>
town in Louisiana. He says he is <lb/>
doing a large contracting business <lb/>
there, but his life has been threat- <lb/>
because be does better work <lb/>
than any other contractor in the <lb/>
town, He be would be much <lb/>
better satisfied at borne and intends <lb/>
to come back after this year. <lb/>

Henry L. <lb/>
Mr. W. A. of Tarboro, <lb/>
remembered by our people as an ex- <lb/>
photographer, has sent the <lb/>
a photograph of Henry L. <lb/>
Wyatt, who w. first soldier <lb/>
killed in the late war. The photo- <lb/>
graph was copied from old <lb/>
of the young confederate. We <lb/>
showed it to a citizen of this town <lb/>
who remembered Wyatt and were <lb/>
told that the picture was a perfect <lb/>
likeness of him. Mr. is furn- <lb/>
copies of the picture at <lb/>
cents each. Wyatt went into the <lb/>
army from Pitt county, but belonged <lb/>
to the gallant old Edgecombe Guard. <lb/>
A great deal has been said in the <lb/>
State papers about Wyatt and his <lb/>
nativity, this may not be void of <lb/>
interest. The person to whom <lb/>
the photograph said Wyatt <lb/>
was born in Richmond bat came to <lb/>
Greenville to lire with relatives when <lb/>
he was a very small boy. We <lb/>
pose there are many persons here <lb/>
ho remember him. <lb/>

A Scrap of Paper Saves her Ufa. <lb/>
It was just an ordinary scrap of wrap- <lb/>

was in the last stages of consumption, <lb/>
told by physicians that she was incurable <lb/>
and could live only a short tune; she <lb/>
v. sighed less than seventy pounds. On <lb/>

a large bottle, it helped her more, bought <lb/>

Sang a little child one day; <lb/>
And a weary woman listened <lb/>
To the darling's happy lay. <lb/>
AU her life seemed dark and gloomy, <lb/>
And her heart was sad with care; <lb/>
Sweetly sang out body's treble <lb/>
our sins and griefs to <lb/>
She was pointing out the Saviour, <lb/>
Who could carry every woe; <lb/>
And the one who sadly listened <lb/>
Needed that dear Helper so <lb/>
Sin and grief were heavy burdens <lb/>
For a fainting soul to bear; <lb/>
But the baby, singing, bade her <lb/>
it to the Lord in <lb/>
With a simple, trusting spirit <lb/>
Weak and worn, she turned to God, <lb/>
Asking Christ to take her burden, <lb/>
As he was the sinner's Lord. <lb/>
Jesus wag the only refuge. <lb/>
He could her sin and care. <lb/>
And he blessed the weary woman <lb/>
When she came to him in prayer. <lb/>
And the happy child still singing, <lb/>
Little knew she had a part <lb/>
In God's wondrous work of bringing <lb/>
Peace unto a trouble heart. <lb/>

On yesterday two young colored <lb/>
children, brother and sister, were <lb/>
before Judge Boykin upon the charge <lb/>
of stealing corn. The children stat- <lb/>
ed that their mother was in <lb/>
ville and that they had been trying <lb/>
to gel to her, but had no money. <lb/>
The judge thereupon stated to the <lb/>
solicitor that he did not wish to try <lb/>
them under such circumstances and <lb/>
upon such a charge, and suggested <lb/>
that money be raised by collection to <lb/>
send the children to their mother. <lb/>
The sheriff proceeded to take up a <lb/>
collection at the suggestion of the <lb/>
court, and the necessary amount of <lb/>
money was collected, the Judge and <lb/>
solicitor both contributing generous- <lb/>
as well as members of the bar and <lb/>
visitors in the court room. The <lb/>
amount thus raised was not only <lb/>
sufficient to the traveling <lb/>
expenses of the children to <lb/>
ville, but left a which was <lb/>
given to them for their mother. This <lb/>
merging of justice into mercy and <lb/>
sweet charity reflects the highest <lb/>
credit upon Judge Boykin, and will <lb/>
meet with universal approval by the <lb/>
people <lb/>
