This gentleman was recently <lb />
nominated by the Democratic Con <lb />

people throughout tho District <lb />

issue of the <lb />
Mr. John M. King, of this place, died <lb />
on last Friday morning. His death came <lb />
not unexpected to family and friends. <lb />
From the day on which he was so cruelly <lb />
shot down in our town by a man who <lb />
had murder in his heart, during all the <lb />
weary months and days of his suffering, <lb />
his condition was such as to afford hut <lb />
little hope of his recovery. The nature <lb />
of the wound he received was almost <lb />
necessarily fatal, and the general <lb />
all while was that his death <lb />
was only a question time. None but <lb />
those who were at his bed- <lb />
side can ever know how he suffered and <lb />
with what patient fortitude he-bore it <lb />
all. At first he himself was a very hope- <lb />
man. He believed that he <lb />
would be a well man again, his <lb />
being always in the cheerful <lb />
but as he passed through weeks of agony <lb />
growing weaker and weaker day after <lb />
day. he seemed to become resigned to <lb />
whatever fate should decree, we <lb />
may believe that it was at last the relief <lb />
he craved when be sank into that dream- <lb />
less sleep and passed into the visible <lb />
presence of death. <lb />
The circumstances of his death need <lb />
not here be recited. He died a <lb />
man. His life was taken by the <lb />
red hand of murder. On the day <lb />
of April, last, John M. King appeared <lb />
upon the streets of Greenville a stalwart <lb />
strong, handsome man, greeting friends <lb />
and acquaintances with that warmth of <lb />
cordiality so characteristic of the man. <lb />
He no personal encounter with <lb />
any man. He rather wished to keep out <lb />
of the way of those were disposed <lb />
to assail him. He endeavored as best <lb />
be could to avoid the tragic that <lb />
Jo wed later in the day. While sitting <lb />
down quietly talking to a friend, two <lb />
men soon came him, maintaining <lb />
their purpose of violence, by words and <lb />
act, and almost in a moment J. X. <lb />
King lay wounded upon the ground, <lb />
helpless, doomed to many weeks of <lb />
and to grave. It was a bloody <lb />
deed and most cruelly done. For no <lb />
cause, without excuse he was shot down <lb />
in very of bis vigorous man- <lb />
life was taken him juSt <lb />
at the time when it seemed sweetest and <lb />
dearest to him. The circumstances <lb />
rounding his death can only be <lb />
plated with feelings of the deepest <lb />
row and pain. <lb />
The deceased had a host of friends <lb />
who will long remember his exceeding <lb />
kindness to them. His friendships with <lb />
man were warm and sincere. He never <lb />
forgot a friend, and was always generous <lb />
and open-hearted. He had no conceal- <lb />
and despised hypocrisy shams <lb />
wherever they showed themselves. He <lb />
loved to be with his fellow-men and en- <lb />
joyed the companionship of his friends. <lb />
He had an active mind, endowed with <lb />
strong common sense, and could always <lb />
meet the requirements of any duty that <lb />
devolved upon him. He had the <lb />
age of his convictions, and always ex- <lb />
press himself freely fearlessly. <lb />
physical or moral cowardice was no <lb />
part of his nature. He was a brave man- <lb />

A meeting was called in the Court <lb />
House, Monday evening, to further <lb />
investigate the establishing of a male <lb />
school of high grade in Greenville. <lb />
The meeting was large enough t <lb />
manifest that deep interest and en- <lb />
worth such a movement, <lb />
still enough were present to give that <lb />
and impetus to the enterprise <lb />
as will warrant its success. <lb />
Dr. C. J. was chosen to <lb />
preside over the meeting, upon <lb />
taking the chair made such <lb />
marks as to the zeal <lb />
in advocating measures of progress, <lb />
especially those looking to higher <lb />
and better <lb />
of that gentleman. Mr. J. B. Yellow <lb />
Icy, chairman of the committee <lb />
pointed at the former meeting, was <lb />
called upon to report the result of the <lb />
committee's investigations. He said <lb />
the committee found plenty of mate- <lb />
rial here to maintain a good school.; <lb />
that the citizens were ready to be- <lb />
slow their patronage, that numerous suggest <lb />
applications had been received from summer vacation <lb />
There is a well on the premises of <lb />
Greenville Institute that is attract- <lb />
no small attention from the <lb />
pie of the community. The well was <lb />
bored in May last, and is feet deep. <lb />
When depth was readied I he <lb />
water suddenly boiled about hall <lb />
way up the well. There was emitted j <lb />
from the well such a strong sulphuric . <lb />
as to create the belief that the; <lb />
water contained high pup- <lb />

discover beneficial result from <lb />
drinking the water, it helped <lb />
the digestion and materially tone <lb />
up his system. Mr. Allied Forbes <lb />
was induced to try it and noticed <lb />
from the beginning that the use of <lb />
was followed by pleasant I <lb />
beneficial results. He sends to the <lb />
Institute twice each day for his sup- <lb />
ply of drinking water from this well. <lb />
Capt. C. A. White also tried the I <lb />
found that it benefited bin <lb />
he, too, sends up for a supply I <lb />
nearly every day. Others have tried . <lb />
the water speak of its the spot cash <lb />
Coming to the belief that this well I <lb />
was a most valuable one and that the <lb />
waters contained such medicinal I <lb />
properties as would prove a blessing <lb />
to the community, Prof I <lb />
some of the water in sealed <lb />
tics to the State Chemist for analysis. <lb />
He returns from this last <lb />
week and sis shows one <lb />
S. gallon of the water contains only <lb />
grains solid matter, while it <lb />
shows in an existence of bi- <lb />
carbonate iron, chloride sodium, <lb />
chloride magnesium, sulphate <lb />
um, sulphate lime, sulphate <lb />
silica. Dr. says <lb />
with such an analysis as that the <lb />
well ought to furnish good water. <lb />
With such fountains of pure, <lb />

least should be raised for the <lb />
work necessary. <lb />
Mr. John Flanagan thought a <lb />
larger sum than by tho coin <lb />
should be raised that <lb />
building could be ma in every way <lb />
creditable to the town. <lb />
B. John saw no reason <lb />
why a good sum could be raised, <lb />
and why Greenville should not have <lb />
an excellent school. Towns with <lb />
less population, with less advantages <lb />
and less surrounding resources than <lb />
had conic together, erected fine <lb />
buildings and established splendid <lb />
schools. Such was needed here and <lb />
it could be accomplished. <lb />
Messrs, J. D. Williamson, W. S. <lb />
Rawls and Sheriff Tucker made re- <lb />
marks upon the necessity of a good <lb />
school, all pledging themselves to <lb />
contribute their part both in cash for <lb />
the building and boys for the school. <lb />
Contributions were then asked for <lb />

It is earnestly requested that there <lb />

when I spoke of some new writers lie <lb />

Is Manly, Generous, Bold, Fearless, <lb />
Warmhearted and Has Small Feet. <lb />
Cowboy life has in the last few years <lb />
lost of its roughness. The cattle <lb />
barons harm discharged most of the <lb />
men who drank and have frowned so <lb />
persistently upon gambling that little <lb />
of it is done. On the ranches kept <lb />
fence they little to do when <lb />
not on the drive or in branding time, <lb />
the cattle being all safely But <lb />
they must take their turns at line rid- <lb />
which means a close inspection of <lb />
the fences and the repair of all breaks <lb />
and damages. Where night overtakes <lb />
them there they staking their <lb />
horses and rolling themselves in their <lb />
blankets. These rides of inspection <lb />
take days to accomplish, for there are <lb />
ranches in Texas which extend in a <lb />
straight line over seventy-five miles. <lb />
Those ranches which are not kept <lb />
fence necessitate more work. The <lb />
boys must then keep their cattle in <lb />
sight, and while allowing them to graze <lb />
in every direction must see that none <lb />
hi the many thousands stray beyond <lb />
the limits of their own particular pas- <lb />
They go then in parties, scat- <lb />
over the territory, for they must <lb />
cover hundreds of thousands of acres <lb />
in a day. <lb />
It is not a life of hardship, and pays <lb />
well enough. Everything is furnished <lb />
to them free and of the very and <lb />
they are paid besides thirty dollars per <lb />
mouth. Each stays out from <lb />
two to three weeks at a time; but they <lb />
take with them the finest of camp wag- <lb />
ons, with beds and bedding, cooking <lb />
utensiLs, the best of groceries of all <lb />
kinds, and as excellent a cook money <lb />
can employ. The prairies are full of <lb />
game, and their rifles are ever handy. <lb />
The life Is free, fascinating and <lb />
healthy. <lb />
These men are exceedingly chivalrous <lb />
to all women. This seems to be a trait <lb />
born in them, as much a part of their <lb />
moral nature as it is of their physical <lb />
to have small feet, for it is seldom that <lb />
a genuine Texas cowboy can be found <lb />
who has not the distinguishing mark <lb />
of a handsome foot, and his boots arc <lb />
to him all that the sombrero is to a <lb />
Mexican. He will deny himself many <lb />
pleasures, he will go without a coat <lb />
and lie seen in most dilapidated attire, <lb />
but his boots must be of the and <lb />
most beautiful make that the country <lb />
Ban afford; high of heel and curved of <lb />
instep, a tine upper and thin sole, fit- <lb />
ting like a glove and showing the hand- <lb />
some foot to perfection. <lb />
Take the cowboys as a class, they <lb />
are bold, fearless and generous, a warm- <lb />
hearted and manly set, with nothing <lb />
small, vicious nor mean about them, <lb />
and Texas need not be ashamed of the <lb />
brave and skillful riders who traverse <lb />
the length and breadth of her <lb />

Mr. looks over the mail and <lb />

the stenographer starts for York, <lb />
while Mr. sits down to break- <lb />
fast with his family. By the time he <lb />
gets to his office and has got rid of the <lb />
first hour's work the letters <lb />
which he has dictated are written out <lb />
