The toe has been and is a <lb/>
steadfast supporter of the Alliance <lb/>

who believe the prosperity of the <lb/>
farmer means the prosperity of <lb/>
all other classes. It seemed to us <lb/>
that the depression in agriculture <lb/>
called for some organization among <lb/>
those who were engaged in the <lb/>

watched the progress and wonder- <lb/>
growth of this order with a <lb/>

the nomination of the very ablest <lb/>
various wood factories; it should <lb/>
have water works; it should have <lb/>
electric lights, above all it <lb/>
should have a good modern hotel. <lb/>
Of course all these can not be had <lb/>

Ex-Speaker Samuel J. Randall, <lb/>

may seem a probability of passing <lb/>
the aid of Republican votes, <lb/>
provided that the Republicans make <lb/>
a attempt to pass their bill <lb/>

same night and was burning when <lb/>
Miss shot herself, and <lb/>
town was wild with excitement. <lb/>
The same there was a woods <lb/>

the light from it thought <lb/>
was ablaze also. But Greenville is <lb/>
all tight, our town is the <lb/>

Roughly Handled. <lb/>
Mr. W. W. a young man <lb/>
of Greenville, who for a few weeks <lb/>
has been filling the roll of emigration <lb/>
agent, was roughly handled in Scot- <lb/>
land Neck last Wednesday. He had <lb/>
been warned not to visit that town, <lb/>
but went in defiance of the warning. <lb/>
Leggett got no people to go with him <lb/>
from here, but had arranged to take <lb/>
fifty from Scotland Neck, and it was <lb/>
when he went for them that <lb/>
occurred. Some of the people <lb/>
were highly incensed and but for the <lb/>
interference of some cooler heads it <lb/>
might have been serious with him. <lb/>
Crop work is to much under way for <lb/>
agents to be interfering with the las <lb/>
borers, and they should desist <lb/>

He was summoned back home by tel <lb/>

Vigorous at <lb/>
-v tells us of a remarkable <lb/>
man in Farmville township. It is <lb/>
Mr. James H. who lives on the <lb/>
Capt. L. J. Barrett land. Mr. <lb/>
is years old and has been married <lb/>
years. This year he has broken <lb/>
up thirty acres of land and laid off <lb/>
every row himself. He is an <lb/>
man and very active for his <lb/>
age. All his life has been spent in <lb/>
Pitt county and he never voted any <lb/>
but the Democratic ticket. He is <lb/>
very fluent in talking of old times <lb/>
and says he has not seen such a <lb/>
winter as the present one since 1834. <lb/>
He has a large number of children <lb/>
and grandchildren and greatly en- <lb/>
joys visiting them. <lb/>
Cruelty. <lb/>
A society for the prevention of <lb/>
cruelty to animals has been <lb/>
ed in and it has been <lb/>
by several exchanges that <lb/>
every town in the State should have <lb/>
one. This is a good suggestion, and <lb/>
the Reflector glad to see <lb/>
such a society in Greenville. It is a <lb/>
common thing to see animals mis- <lb/>
treated and such inhumanity should <lb/>
be suppressed. Only last Saturday <lb/>
a case on our streets for <lb/>
which the perpetrator ought to be <lb/>
punished. A young man was <lb/>
driving n horse down Third <lb/>
The noble band of Christian work- <lb/>
known as the Kings Daughters, <lb/>

selves rich treasure Heaven. The <lb/>
good they have already done cannot <lb/>
be estimated, though the <lb/>
has been in existence here only <lb/>
a few months. They have fed the <lb/>
hungry, clothed the naked, nursed <lb/>
the sick, comforted the distressed, <lb/>
and taught the unlettered, all being <lb/>
done His Those in com- <lb/>
circumstances and busily <lb/>
occupied with their daily avocations <lb/>
little know of the misery and want <lb/>
existing here around us and <lb/>
be surprised at the large work these <lb/>
women with the love of Jesus in their <lb/>
hearts are finding to do. To hear <lb/>
them talk of their ministrations and <lb/>
tell of the they often find, <lb/>
can but arouse one to a feeling of <lb/>
sympathy. The Reflector was a <lb/>
few days ago waited upon and asked <lb/>
to aid them a special undertaking <lb/>
they now have on hand by making <lb/>
an appeal through this paper. Of <lb/>
course we are glad to do so and we <lb/>
believe the citizens of the town will <lb/>
be ready to cheerfully lend their as- <lb/>
to such a worthy cause. It <lb/>
is There is an afflicted <lb/>
living at the County Poor House, <lb/>
for one of young lady <lb/>
who cannot <lb/>
wish to purchase an invalids <lb/>
ling chair. To make this purchase <lb/>
are a very small <lb/>
amount when divided among the <lb/>
large number who will no doubt be <lb/>
glad to give something toward <lb/>
it. Merely to mention this should <lb/>
be all the appeal that is necessary. <lb/>
young lady is an inmate of the <lb/>
poor so afflicted that she can <lb/>
not walk a step. And with the aid <lb/>
of the chair that is proposed to give <lb/>
her she can get some enjoyment out <lb/>
of her sad life. Donations to the <lb/>

On the fourth Monday this <lb/>
month, there will be a meeting <lb/>
at Mi. Ashley of those <lb/>
interested in the drainage of <lb/>
Creek. <lb/>
Mr. A. N. Ryan set up his hand <lb/>
some soda fountain last week and is <lb/>
ready for the summer. The I Ml <lb/>
Ton was honored with the first lemon- <lb/>
of the season and returns thanks <lb/>
for the same. <lb/>
There are many items of personal <lb/>
news Greenville that would <lb/>
gladly be mentioned in the <lb/>
tor if friends would only report them <lb/>
to us. Can you not let us know when <lb/>
you have visitors or when any of <lb/>
your family come and go. <lb/>
Mr. W. R. Whichard tells us there <lb/>
was a large forest fire out in Carolina <lb/>
township last Saturday. The fire <lb/>
extended over an area of about two <lb/>
and a half miles and the neighbor- <lb/>
hood had to do hard work to prevent <lb/>
its spreading further. Many rails <lb/>
were burned. <lb/>
One of the King's Daughters make <lb/>
weekly visits to the poor house to <lb/>
teach the inmates how to read. It <lb/>
is a painful fact that several invalids <lb/>
out there never heard of the Garden <lb/>
if the crucifixion of Christ <lb/>
is a new thing to them. Here is a <lb/>
good place for missionary work and <lb/>
are truly glad the King's <lb/>
are taking such a deep interest <lb/>
in them. <lb/>

Mr. John of Wilmington, <lb/>

town with a corps of hands to <lb/>
erect the new depot here. We have <lb/>
had pleasure of meeting Mr. <lb/>
and find a very <lb/>
gentleman. He tells the de- <lb/>

buildings on Coast Line. The <lb/>
structure is to be of wood, of it <lb/>
two stories high, with large <lb/>
comfortable re- <lb/>

At the last meeting of Pitt county <lb/>

the depot, and submit the same at <lb/>
the next meeting to be held the <lb/>

hold a Farmers Institute also <lb/>
ting Profs. Massey and Chamber- <lb/>

and inviting Messrs. R. <lb/>

A very important step taken by <lb/>

Potatoes Without Vines. <lb/>
Mr. Cos brought on <lb/>
Saturday two Irish potatoes, about <lb/>
as large as hickory nuts, that have <lb/>
attained their growth in an unusual <lb/>
nay. r. Cox says his potatoes <lb/>
were planted about the usual time, <lb/>
but as no vines came up he <lb/>
ed the seed potatoes were not good. <lb/>
After wailing sometime to see if they <lb/>
would come up he dug down to find <lb/>
if the seed had over sprouted and <lb/>
much to his sunrise found every hill <lb/>
containing a number of small <lb/>
toes like those brought us. but there <lb/>
was no vine sprout at all. The <lb/>
seed of these potatoes came from a <lb/>
variety ordered by Mr. M. F. Sum- <lb/>
last year. They were planted <lb/>
were prolific and had luxuriant vines <lb/>
lie saved a quantity for seed to plant <lb/>
this year and Mr. Cox procured sonic <lb/>
of them. He says he is going to let <lb/>
them grow and sec what of ma- <lb/>
they will reach. The <lb/>
potatoes arc not as prolific as those <lb/>
last year with vines. <lb/>

OBITUARY. <lb/>
It is sad to record the death of <lb/>
our sister, Mrs. Maggie E Daniel, <lb/>
wile of Beverly Daniel, who died <lb/>
at her home near Pitt Co., <lb/>
N. C, 5th, 1890, aged years <lb/>
mouth pad days, after an illness <lb/>
of several months. None know her <lb/>
disease God. Physicians failed <lb/>
to learn her disease, do <lb/>
to alleviate her suffering. <lb/>
Sister Maggie embraced religion <lb/>
while very young and joined the <lb/>
Methodist church at Mount Zion, <lb/>
Co., lived a consistent <lb/>
Christian. She bore her <lb/>
with Christian resignation, often <lb/>
saving to her family and friends <lb/>
that nursed her, be patient with me <lb/>
it won't be and would I'm <lb/>
trusting, and waiting en <lb/>
the Lord. She passed away as <lb/>
as an infant Bad, <lb/>
yes, .-o sad to part with one we <lb/>
ed fondly, but amidst the <lb/>
and desolation of our lacerated <lb/>
hearts there is a silver lining to the <lb/>
night of our affliction the <lb/>
that our loved one has <lb/>
she is now <lb/>
forever securely sheltered from all <lb/>
pain and she is in <lb/>
full realization of a <lb/>
she is now in Hie <lb/>

the I <lb/>
the balm to our bleeding hearts, <lb/>
as husband, children, mother <lb/>
friends, we feel the soft touch of <lb/>
these reliving memories swooping <lb/>
over cords OUT affections. <lb/>
We would not have her back. She <lb/>
has the good <lb/>
though we miss her so much here, <lb/>
we would not disturb the sweet re- <lb/>
pose she now enjoys from her faith- <lb/>
earthly labors. Her remains <lb/>
