The means they have taken to <lb/>

The Psalmist tells us days of <lb/>
our years are years and <lb/>
ten, and i f by reason of strength <lb/>
they be four score, yet is their <lb/>

their departed chieftain. While his <lb/>

of the people can be heard <lb/>
everywhere as though the mourn- <lb/>

Jefferson Davis is dead bu bis <lb/>

The great walls of Monroe <lb/>

lotted period in order that he might <lb/>

For myself I have no doubt that <lb/>
in coming when actors <lb/>

My countrymen as we turn away <lb/>
from his grave to day we may take <lb/>
with us consoling thought, the <lb/>
proud reflection that his private life <lb/>
was as an bis public life was <lb/>
exalted. His severest critics, his <lb/>
most inveterate haters have never <lb/>
dared to him with personal <lb/>
wrong. For more than a half a con- <lb/>
from Senate to assume the Pres <lb/>
of the Confederacy, by which <lb/>
parting words he bathed not <lb/>
that body but the entire <lb/>
country in tears. And the first rue. <lb/>
of my indignation ever be- <lb/>
aroused was in reading <lb/>
treatment this poor, feeble, invalid <lb/>
man received at the hands of the <lb/>
conquering army and how this <lb/>
great government when he was <lb/>
ready secured within the walls of <lb/>
the strongest fort showed its cow- <lb/>
and brutality in shackling <lb/>
him with clanking chains to a fever- <lb/>
ed lied. I in I, countrymen, his <lb/>
life has served to teach us the <lb/>
son that defeat has its <lb/>
less than triumph. The Southern <lb/>

will cure you. He is a young man <lb/>
of energy and gives close attention to <lb/>
kind that always succeed. <lb/>
This all the mercantile houses <lb/>
whose advertisements appear in this pa- <lb/>
per. If don't find what you want <lb/>
for Christmas places, J. L. Sugg <lb/>
will take great pleasure in writing an in- <lb/>
policy, and a good large one <lb/>
would make a nice present for your wife <lb/>
Again, H. F. Keel would smile <lb/>
rimes over selling yon a horse. He has <lb/>

FROM SECOND <lb/>
the burden or the cause tor which <lb/>
he died <lb/>
In dignity and honor be met the <lb/>
common W <lb/>
with courage faced its <lb/>
charges. In retirement and <lb/>
a quarter a century he bore <lb/>
without a murmur <lb/>
calumny of our enemies, the <lb/>
of defeat, the disgrace of shack- <lb/>
and the shame of <lb/>
Other leaders have had their <lb/>
triumphs, conquerors have won <lb/>
crowns, and honors have been plied <lb/>
on the victors of earth's greatest <lb/>
battles, but never yet was man <lb/>
ed more by people, never conqueror <lb/>
wore prouder diadem, than the love <lb/>
sustained him in his <lb/>
and which he bears with <lb/>
the grave. Never King in- <lb/>
habited more splendid than <lb/>
in the millions of pure brave <lb/>
hearts in which his dear name and <lb/>
fame are forever enshrined. <lb/>
But, friends, it is a consoling <lb/>
thought that the great good do <lb/>
not die. that can not M <lb/>
entombed. When the soul rises in <lb/>
majesty and rower she breathes <lb/>
forth the life that cannot <lb/>
fountains or life that shall cross the <lb/>
boundary of time in harmony with <lb/>
eternity, they lash against its <lb/>
and brighten amid the war <lb/>
or elements. <lb/>
some tall cliff it lifts its awful form. <lb/>
As when from the vale and mirage bears <lb/>
the storm. <lb/>
Though round its breast the rolling <lb/>
clouds arc spread. <lb/>
Eternal sunshine settles over its head <lb/>
Eighteen, centuries ago the bead <lb/>
of the great Apostle, fell before the <lb/>
sword of the bloody executioner, <lb/>
but through long ages of oppression <lb/>
his example animated the <lb/>
church, and to-day stimulates <lb/>
its missionary spirit to press on and <lb/>
through rigors of every climate <lb/>
and the darkness of every heathen <lb/>
system, to the universal and final <lb/>
triumph of that Cross for which be <lb/>
died. Four centuries ago the body <lb/>
of John was and <lb/>
burnt ashes, and those ashes cast <lb/>
into the water, but the doctrines for <lb/>
which he died cover and bless the <lb/>
world. Half a century ago the <lb/>
voice of was hushed, <lb/>
but voice today stirs the <lb/>
of every true Irish <lb/>
heart. In this hour the voice of <lb/>
Jefferson Davis is silent, bis pen <lb/>
laid to rest, and he can think no more <lb/>
for the people he loved so well; but <lb/>
who can the distant ages down <lb/>
whose corridors will clearly and res- <lb/>
ring his voice proclaiming <lb/>
the eternal doctrines of Slate <lb/>
and individual liberty. In <lb/>
what distant time shall memory fail <lb/>
to recall his martyrdom for our cause, <lb/>
and in what distant century shall <lb/>
the Southern heart grow so cold as <lb/>
not to be indignant at the treatment <lb/>
this one feeble invalid received at <lb/>
the bands strongest govern- <lb/>
in this civilized world. With <lb/>
this hour his body away, <lb/>
be still and will forever live <lb/>
hearts of bis countrymen. Tis <lb/>
but bis dost lives <lb/>
patriotism into <lb/>
our and energizes oar <lb/>
with a voice <lb/>
his sainted spirit calls upon liberty <lb/>
sons to check the political <lb/>
of hour protect the <lb/>
republic. <lb/>
From these memorial services held <lb/>
this hour in every city, town and <lb/>
hamlet; will be crystallized a <lb/>
I refer not to that shaft, <lb/>
as it may that shall <lb/>
mark his last resting place, nor to <lb/>
those statues of bronze or marble <lb/>
that shall decorate and add <lb/>
to every capital city in the <lb/>
South. But a monument that shall <lb/>
have for its base every inch of <lb/>
Southern toil, Its height not com <lb/>
passed by human eye, I it up by an <lb/>
clouded sun reaches the spacious <lb/>
of the Armament, measured <lb/>
In breadth and only by <lb/>
the intense feeling of the heart, the <lb/>
clinging affection of our nature, <lb/>
the patriotism of brave and faith- <lb/>
people. This monument, felt <lb/>
while not seen, will serve to teach <lb/>
a lesson that should be brought <lb/>
to our hearts and handed down <lb/>
to our is, to never <lb/>
lower our standard or public or <lb/>
honor, to be true to ourselves, <lb/>
country and God, love our govern- <lb/>
venerate the constitution, op- <lb/>
pose centralization whether in <lb/>
material or political world, promote <lb/>
weal and maintain the welfare <lb/>
of the people. he who saves <lb/>
bis country saves himself, and saves <lb/>
all things, and all things saved do <lb/>
bless him. Ho who lets bis country <lb/>
die, lets all things die, dies himself <lb/>
Ignobly, and all things dying curse <lb/>
Measured in Southern hearts by <lb/>
this standard, the life of Jefferson <lb/>
Davis was a full one and his exam- <lb/>
deserves to live throughout <lb/>
ages. <lb/>
was his work is done ; <lb/>
But while races of lad endure. <lb/>
Let his great example stand <lb/>
more, lit is reproach or <lb/>
praise. In tin- of <lb/>
grave his body is ibis day laid to <lb/>
moulder in dust. Ins <lb/>
noble spirit passed through <lb/>
gate nay of death into eternity. <lb/>
with the march of he <lb/>
fell and sleeps in peace forever. <lb/>
J. B. Yellowley, Esq., made the <lb/>
closing speech, using these <lb/>

As one who knew Mr. Davis In <lb/>

and became with bis ca- <lb/>

as the grandest of all sous, I <lb/>
am prompted to add something in <lb/>
my feeble way to the re- <lb/>
marks which have been delivered <lb/>
regarding his genius, his states- <lb/>
and bis oratory <lb/>
It was the winter of 1876 when <lb/>
first met Mr. Davis, and even <lb/>
now I seem to fed the cordial grasp <lb/>
of bis band; seem to the <lb/>
expression bis face <lb/>
and hear the friendly words which <lb/>
fell his lips. His manners <lb/>
were exceeding, his <lb/>
voice was was filled with <lb/>
such melody as upon <lb/>
reuses long after sound <lb/>
pears. After hearing talk I <lb/>
could well account for that <lb/>
sing eloquence of speech with which <lb/>
he swayed multitudes, with <lb/>
which lie. won the applause of <lb/>
Senates and the ad-i <lb/>

the exciting scenes of a <lb/>
convince that it was use- <lb/>

man and best for bis people <lb/>
be should cease hostilities and re- <lb/>
tire beyond the Mississippi. It was <lb/>
this winning which, <lb/>
during the war the street. of <lb/>
were filled with an ex- <lb/>
cited and desperate crowd or <lb/>
and desperate men, women and <lb/>
children on the point of <lb/>
a bread riot, enabled <lb/>
him to prevail upon to pause <lb/>
in their desperation, listen to his <lb/>
words, yield to bis persuasion <lb/>
go back to homes. <lb/>
As an orator he will always <lb/>
the greatest this country <lb/>
has produced. His farewell add res <lb/>
at time he took leave of the <lb/>
United States Senate, when <lb/>
bad seceded he felt that <lb/>
his allegiance was first to her, was <lb/>
a of oratory. He <lb/>

burning eloquence Cicero and <lb/>
could employ at will the stinging in- <lb/>
of Demosthenes. <lb/>
