The Republicans of <lb />

ticket, virtually surrendering the <lb />
field to the Democrats. They is- <lb />

Better follow the example of his <lb />
Mississippi brethren and with- <lb />

Last week it was our pleasure <lb />
to attend the services conducted <lb />
by Rev. Mr. Pearson, at Tarboro. <lb />
We heard him three times and <lb />
were very much impressed with <lb />
his ability. Ho is beyond <lb />
the most thorough Bible scholar <lb />
to which we ever listened, and he <lb />
the Scriptures freely in his <lb />
discourses, bringing the Word to <lb />
bear directly on every point. <lb />
limited and then crops are a failure. <lb />
Men paid dollars per <lb />
month to a farm here. <lb />
The Oklahoma country has <lb />
been taken up and shanties, tents <lb />
and dugouts break the monotony of <lb />
space. There is out little timber <lb />
for miles and miles, and if this Win <lb />
should severe, I fear the <lb />
will <lb />
times. the towns it is differ <lb />
the houses, as a rule, are neat <lb />
and substantial, and <lb />
Oklahoma City are indeed cities. <lb />
Coal has been found near <lb />
These new towns very orderly <lb />
considering the mixed population ; <lb />
however, one murder in Oklahoma <lb />
City last week. <lb />
South Canadian is the <lb />
the west and Silver <lb />
City is the nation, <lb />
one mile from the river. The <lb />
is one of the most treacherous <lb />
rivers in this whole Its <lb />
bed is the water <lb />
either comes down in rolling billows <lb />
or the river bed is dry. Sometimes <lb />
one may start across and before <lb />
he has reached the opposite <lb />
where but a few moments before was <lb />
dry the threatening whirls <lb />
will be ready to engulf him. Then <lb />
are no bridges in this country, con- <lb />
the streams have to be <lb />
forded. <lb />
The roads here are said to be <lb />
very good roads, but to me, <lb />
accustomed to the smooth roads of <lb />
Eastern Carolina, they are a terror. <lb />
Two weeks ago I spent several days <lb />
at the home of a <lb />
wealthy who part Chi- <lb />
rode each day <lb />
in a dogcart. I had to travel over <lb />
some of the good roads and as <lb />
the fiery steed along over hills <lb />
through valleys, the way <lb />
who thinks the administration <lb />
owes its existence to him, stands <lb />
ready to accept the guardianship. <lb />
friends here are quietly <lb />
hedging. they say that he <lb />
has had no idea of being elected but <lb />
only went into the campaign or- <lb />
to get absolute control of the <lb />
party machinery so Coat be could <lb />
fix up the delegation to the next <lb />
national republican renominating <lb />
convention. This is not a very <lb />
likely story, and it would be just as <lb />
well for the Virginian democrats to <lb />
keep up the lively light they are <lb />
making until election day. <lb />
Statistics already collected by <lb />
the Census bureau show that the <lb />
number of cotton mills the South <lb />
have more that doubled since 1.380. <lb />
