The Salisbury J. B. <lb/>

its fifth birthday. Since <lb/>

weeks since the is <lb/>

Poor Wilson We certainly <lb/>
sympathize with the good people <lb/>
of the town and county. Coon <lb/>
loving Wanamaker has appointed <lb/>
a named Sam as post- <lb/>
master of that town. It is a shame, <lb/>
to say the least of it, and John will <lb/>
live to reap his reward for such an <lb/>
outrage upon decent people. <lb/>
Every tax payer this year will <lb/>
pay cents on the valuation <lb/>
for the benefit of the pension fund <lb/>
for disabled Confederate soldiers, <lb/>
their widows and orphans. Each <lb/>
poll tax will be increased cents <lb/>
for the same purpose. There is <lb/>
not a man in North Carolina but <lb/>
who should M willing and glad to <lb/>
pay this tax. <lb/>
Several of our exchanges are <lb/>
publishing clubbing arrangements <lb/>
with a sheet called <lb/>
Farmer and giving that paper <lb/>
loud advertising. We venture <lb/>
that by the time they are through <lb/>
with the experiment they am ready <lb/>
to say they never tried anything <lb/>
more unsatisfactory. The <lb/>
is sufficiently amused along <lb/>
that line. <lb/>
The proposed colonizing of Ge- <lb/>
band of Indians in the <lb/>
extreme mountainous section of <lb/>
North Carolina has caused no lit- <lb/>
comment of late. Secretary of <lb/>
War Proctor wrote Governor <lb/>
Fowle about the matter and the <lb/>
latter in his reply opposed such a <lb/>
step. He said he thought such an <lb/>
arrangement would be the cause <lb/>
of much dissatisfaction in the <lb/>
State. The Governor is commend- <lb/>
ed in his course. <lb/>
BOYLE <lb/>
Special to the <lb/>
The following telegram was re- <lb/>
at the office <lb/>
Sunday, October <lb/>
X. <lb/>
He to be <lb/>
the 29th of November next. S. <lb/>
Other telegrams received later <lb/>
were to the effect that the jury was <lb/>
out only three and a <lb/>
in up verdict, that <lb/>
after it was rendered Boyle made <lb/>
an address to the Court which <lb/>
he denounced the persecuting at- <lb/>
with hitter invective and <lb/>
created the greatest sensation ever <lb/>
known in a court room in the <lb/>
State. His counsel asked for a <lb/>
new trial on the ground that <lb/>
verdict was contrary to the Judge's <lb/>
charge, and on account of <lb/>
tiled that the Judge did not <lb/>
charge the jury specially with re- <lb/>
to the cries made by the girl. <lb/>
Judge declined to set <lb/>
aside the verdict and giant a new- <lb/>
trial, saying such a cause would <lb/>
not be proper unless the verdict <lb/>
was palpably contrary to the <lb/>
weight of evidence. After sen- <lb/>
was passed upon Boyle his <lb/>
counsel arose and appealed to the <lb/>
Supreme Court, which appeal was <lb/>
granted. <lb/>
While in our office the other <lb/>
night Mr. Frank Powell, editor of <lb/>
the Tarboro Southerner, told us <lb/>
there had been 2.100 errors report- <lb/>
ed against Mr. Bryan, the postal <lb/>
clerk on the A. A- B. road, during <lb/>
two months. Why the Govern- <lb/>
will persist in keeping such <lb/>
incompetent men in the service, we <lb/>
are unable to see. It is not only <lb/>
so with the eh on the A. B. <lb/>
road, but the majority of the <lb/>
in this State arc little <lb/>
or no better. It is a shame to the <lb/>
present administration that such an <lb/>
inefficient mail service is being <lb/>
furnished. <lb/>

The reports of correspondents of <lb/>
the Weekly Crop Bulletin by <lb/>
the IT. C Experiment Station and <lb/>
State Weather Service, <lb/>
with the United States Signal <lb/>
Service, show that, during the week <lb/>
ending Friday, October 4th, there <lb/>
was a deficiency of rainfall, an av- <lb/>
temperature very much <lb/>
sunshine. No rain fell excepting <lb/>
light showers on September 30th. <lb/>
and the has been nearly cloud- <lb/>

occurred again the early part <lb/>
the week but caused no damage. <lb/>
The nights have been cool with <lb/>
heavy dews while during the day <lb/>

The large percentage of sun- <lb/>
shine has caused the bolls in the <lb/>
cotton fields to more rapidly, <lb/>
except on very large plants. Far- <lb/>

very favorable for this important <lb/>
work. No complaint has reached <lb/>
the office of damage done <lb/>
by the caterpillars; dry <lb/>

their spreading. The corn is <lb/>
probably rips enough to gather now <lb/>
in places. The prospects seem to <lb/>
be for continued fine, weather <lb/>
farmers are good spirits. <lb/>

Senators Hampton, of South Car <lb/>

very wide apart in their ideas of a <lb/>
correct solution of the race problem. <lb/>
Senator for a long <lb/>
time advocated the purchase of land <lb/>
in Mexico, or an island, and the <lb/>
colonization thereon of the <lb/>
of the Southern States. Senator <lb/>
Han-is being asked what he thought <lb/>
such a scheme, replied do not <lb/>
consider it practical at all. The <lb/>
does not want to be colonized <lb/>
and if the devil only had those who <lb/>
are trying to make practical capital <lb/>
of him there would be no <lb/>

To Tell the Age of Cattle. <lb/>
A heifer has no rings on her horns <lb/>
until she is two years of age. <lb/>
one is added each year thereafter. <lb/>
Yon emu, therefore, tell the age of a <lb/>
with tolerable accuracy by <lb/>
counting the on her horns and <lb/>
adding two to the number. The <lb/>
bull has no rings, as a rule, until he <lb/>
is five old. To tell hiS age <lb/>
after that period, add five to the <lb/>
number of rings. The. best way to <lb/>
tell the age is by the teeth, which it, <lb/>
of course, the only way with polled <lb/>
cattle. What arc called the milk <lb/>
gradually disappear in front. <lb/>
At the end of three years, the sec- <lb/>
pair permanent teeth are <lb/>
well grown, at four years the third <lb/>
pair, and at five the and last <lb/>
pair have and at this <lb/>
time the central pair are full size. <lb/>
At seven years the dark line, caused <lb/>
by the wearing of the teeth, appears <lb/>
on all of them, and on the central <lb/>
pair a circular mark. At eight <lb/>
years thin circular mark appears on <lb/>
all of them, and at nine years the <lb/>
central pair begins to and <lb/>
the third at eleven. After this <lb/>
the age only be <lb/>
ed by degree of shrinkage gen <lb/>
At fifteen years the <lb/>
are nearly all gone. <lb/>
