WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 2nd, 1889. <lb />
The Durham Daily Sun has <lb />
changed from n, <lb />
A always <lb />
more gorgeous beautiful than <lb />
a rising, and we suppose this <lb />
change will make the Sun the more <lb />
brilliantly for <lb />
The North Carolina editors have <lb />
a soft spot in their hearts for broth- <lb />
Scott of the Lenoir Topic, and <lb />
all of us rejoice with him in, and <lb />
send best wishes for the fifteenth <lb />
anniversary of his paper which he <lb />
celebrated last week. We admire <lb />
the Topic and admire the style of <lb />
its editor. The people of Caldwell <lb />
have every reason to be proud of <lb />
their county paper. <lb />
The Wilmington Star announced <lb />
a. few days ago the beginning of <lb />
its forty fifth half yearly volume. <lb />
The Star is always the first paper <lb />
with us, and we look upon it as the <lb />
pride of North Carolina journals- <lb />
Its present editor. Maj. Duffy, is <lb />
an apt writer. His editorials bear <lb />
evidences of ability and his <lb />
are gems of the brightest <lb />
nature. Long shine the Star. <lb />
We were gratified to see in the <lb />
last Henderson Gold Leaf, that Thad <lb />
Manning had abandoned his idea <lb />
of leaving North Carolina, and was <lb />
going to remain in Henderson and <lb />
continue the publication of his ex- <lb />
paper. Joe Daniels says <lb />
the editors of the State ought to <lb />
hold a meeting and rejoice over <lb />
this good news. We will get in <lb />
some rejoicing at the next Press <lb />
Convention over it. <lb />
It is much disputed where the <lb />
world's fair in 1892 shall be held. <lb />
Our opinion has all along been <lb />
that not the slightest idea of hold- <lb />
it anywhere else than n ash- <lb />
should be entertained. <lb />
New York wants it its and is <lb />
every effort to secure it. Chi- <lb />
says it ought to go there, and <lb />
that city is holding meetings and <lb />
sending out circulars hying to <lb />
create a sentiment in its favor. <lb />
And now St. Louis comes out with <lb />
a map bearing three large circles <lb />
representing a radius of five <lb />
miles around New York, Chi- <lb />
and St. Louis and claiming <lb />
the number of people its own cir- <lb />
to be by far the largest and for <lb />
that reason it should have the fair. <lb />
If all these little towns don't stop <lb />
clamoring for the fair and let it go <lb />
on to Washington where it <lb />
and certainly will go, we. will rise <lb />
up and mention Greenville as a can <lb />
The work on the Baptist Memo- <lb />
rial church at this place has ad- <lb />
until the building is now <lb />
nearly ready to receive the win- <lb />
in the main audience room, <lb />
upper story. When the work was <lb />
started, and since it has been in <lb />
progress, several persons in various <lb />
parts of the State expressed a de- <lb />
sire to place memorial windows in <lb />
this room of the building. If <lb />
wishing to do so will com- <lb />
with Mr. J. J. Cherry, <lb />
Treasurer of the church, they can <lb />
get full information as to size and <lb />
can express their choice of win- <lb />
As it will e necessary soon <lb />
to put in windows of some kind, <lb />
those wishing the memorial win- <lb />
should not delay in the mat- <lb />
The building, when <lb />
will be a memorial <lb />
to the Baptist Convention, <lb />
which was organized in Greenville, <lb />
and it will be a fit place for any <lb />
memorial that may be desired <lb />
placed within it. The <lb />
here has labored hard and <lb />
borne a heavy burden to bring the <lb />
building to its present stage, and <lb />
greatest credit is due them. It is <lb />
now hoped to get the building <lb />
completed at an early day. <lb />
We publish to-day a letter from <lb />
Mr. E. A. Oldham, editor of the <lb />
Durham Globe, concerning some <lb />
recent comments made in the Re- <lb />
Mr. Oldham is not en- <lb />
consistent in all things, as we <lb />
will show. He complains at us <lb />
for not writing him a postal asking <lb />
him to exchange, and says that <lb />
the aid of a newspaper <lb />
directory ho may have overlooked <lb />
some of his Well, he <lb />
managed to find the address of the <lb />
Reflector when his circular was <lb />
sent out, and found it again when <lb />
the first issue of the Globe was sent <lb />
out, so it is strange that he should <lb />
have lost it before another issue <lb />
of his paper. Again, we did not <lb />
think it was necessary or the <lb />
tom among North Carolina journals <lb />
to send a postal card, when a mark- <lb />
ed copy of one paper sent to <lb />
re was sufficient to secure the <lb />
of an exchange. At least this <lb />
has been found to be all that was <lb />
necessary in our twelve years ex- <lb />
and we saw no reason for <lb />
making further advances to the <lb />
Globe than we always had to other <lb />
papers. Of course it is not <lb />
to into print about such <lb />
matters, but we saw several papers <lb />
complaining of the discourtesy of <lb />
the Globe so had our say, too. The <lb />
Reflector does not retract any <lb />
it has said. <lb />
Gen. D. H. Hill, a hero of tho <lb />
late war, died in Charlotte last <lb />
week. <lb />
Last Spring a Business <lb />
was organized in Greenville, <lb />
and started off its work in a man- <lb />
that looked as if the result was <lb />
to be much good to the <lb />
Summer drew on, our people <lb />
began wandering around in search <lb />
of recreation, interest in the <lb />
seemed to wane and <lb />
enough of the officers could not be <lb />
brought together to conduct the <lb />
work of the meetings. Hence <lb />
there has been no meeting in <lb />
months, and the Association <lb />
is pronounced dead by those who <lb />
began preaching its funeral and <lb />
throwing cold water upon it from <lb />
its infancy. But the people are <lb />
all back home now, court is over, <lb />
there is nothing but the usual <lb />
tine of business to occupy the re- <lb />
of this year and the Re- <lb />
suggests that the <lb />
be revived and that it go <lb />
forward in carrying out the work <lb />
upon which it started. Despite <lb />
the croakers, we know that Green- <lb />
ville can be made a growing town <lb />
if her people can only be induced <lb />
to act in concert. There is plenty <lb />
of material here for factories, there <lb />
are ample facilities for all trans- <lb />
there are abundant lands <lb />
for all new comers who wish to set- <lb />
the climate is salubrious, and <lb />
every natural advantage is in our <lb />
favor. What then wait we for <lb />
and indifference will <lb />
see other towns supplant us, while <lb />
Greenville has advantages over all <lb />
her neighbors if they were only <lb />
utilized. We urge the business men <lb />
to action. Don't say nothing can <lb />
be done. Revive the Association <lb />
and go to work earnestly, and you <lb />
will see that something can <lb />
done. I <lb />
Mr. Letter. <lb />
H. C, Sept. <lb />
Editor <lb />
Las been directed to your <lb />
of last week in yon complain <lb />
of not Laving received the Globe, <lb />
and charge me with if <lb />
I remember your comment. <lb />
I confess my surprise <lb />
there has been no intention cl dis- <lb />
on my part or on the part <lb />
of any one connected with the <lb />
so far as the Reflector is concern- <lb />
ed. <lb />
We have never set eyes on the <lb />
exchange list of predecessor, the <lb />
Tobacco Plant, in sending out <lb />
copies of our paper to the papers <lb />
in the State, without the aid of a <lb />
newspaper directory, may have <lb />
overlooked several of our friends. <lb />
Can there be any discourtesy in <lb />
this On the other, how much more <lb />
courteous, how much more <lb />
it would have been to have done <lb />
what other editors did, dropped <lb />
a postal and called our attention to <lb />
the oversight, remembering the <lb />
fact that many things are apt to be <lb />
overlooked in the organization of a <lb />
new morning journal. <lb />
Please publish this letter that <lb />
your readers may see that no dis <lb />
courtesy has been intended yon, and <lb />
farther, that other exchanges not <lb />
getting the Globe may understand <lb />
the probable cause thereof. <lb />
Very Fraternally yours, <lb />
Edward a. Oldham, <lb />
. The Other Side. <lb />
Editor see in <lb />
your last issue, that your <lb />

establishing an Agricultural Fair in <lb />

the prosperity the laboring class- <lb />

fer with him in just this one <lb />
have not much experience <lb />

goes, it teaches toe that Fairs <lb />
fit the capitalist, -he speculator and <lb />
the gambler at the ex- <lb />
of the honest tillers of the <lb />
soil. If I am correct this, there <lb />
is no other argument needed to <lb />
prove a Fair In our county <lb />
would be a curse instead of a bless- <lb />
to the masses or our people. In <lb />
my humble opinion there arc too <lb />
many Fairs in the State now for the <lb />
good of our people. The amount of <lb />
which goes out of Pitt <lb />
to these Fairs is no doubt many <lb />
hundreds of dollars each year. Our <lb />
people are not able to afford this. <lb />
It seems to me it must be plain <lb />
to the mind of every reasonable <lb />
thinker that as well as our <lb />
farmers are growing poorer and <lb />
poorer each year. If this is so <lb />
is it so It must be because too <lb />
much of the little we raise is spent <lb />
non-essentials, and too little for <lb />
permanent improvements. Then we <lb />
should try to husband our resources <lb />
and instead of investing cur money <lb />
in fairs, let us put it in permanent <lb />
improvements on our farms. I <lb />
we will try this plan a few years <lb />
the old county will show up to much <lb />
better advantage than she would <lb />
