hour there was one constant rush <lb />
for the depot until the platform and <lb />
some distance up and down each <lb />

At seven o'clock the tram <lb />
came thundering in amid the shouts <lb />

Greenville at last had a railroad. <lb />
Four our beautiful young ladies, <lb />

In conversation with Mr. Weill, <lb />
from the Auditor's office, and who <lb />
is also a general solicitor for the <lb />
company, he told us that road <lb />
bed between Scotland Neck and <lb />
Greenville was the best of any new <lb />
road be ever saw. He said Capt. <lb />
Smith had done his work of grad <lb />
well and skillfully. Mr. Weill <lb />
also expressed himself as highly <lb />
pleased with what he saw of Green- <lb />
ville in his short visit. <lb />
Mr. J. It. Moore, the agent, is a <lb />
popular man and skilled in rail- <lb />
road work. He is making many- <lb />
friends.<lb />
Mr. George J. Smith, the <lb />
said to us, am just delight- <lb />

No, sir. Moore did not get <lb />
inn into by the first train, and <lb />
didn't try to stop it either. But we <lb />
tell you what he did do. He had <lb />
some good turnouts right there, <lb />
scooped in the railroad men <lb />
passengers, took them to Hotel <lb />
Macon and treated them so clever <lb />
that I hey decided at to make <lb />
his place headquarters. The <lb />
docs a good thing to Jail into <lb />
his hands.<lb />
Mr. route agent for the <lb />
Southern Express Co., came down <lb />
to look after the establishment of an <lb />
express office here. He said the <lb />
office will be opened September 1st. <lb />
Mr. D. Haskett will lie agent.<lb />
People love to see the trains and <lb />
crowds go over to the depot nearly <lb />
evening. <lb />
Dr. Eugene Grissom has ten- <lb />
tiered his resignation as Super- <lb />
of the North Carolina <lb />
Insane The Hoard of <lb />
Directors held a meeting on the <lb />
22nd when his resignation was <lb />
presented and accepted. He <lb />
will remain in charge until the <lb />
11th of September when the Di- <lb />
rectors will again meet to elect <lb />
his successor. <lb />
Ma. hope will <lb />
us for again asking for space <lb />
in your paper, in order that may <lb />
reply to the would-be great logician <lb />
who we suppose is the <lb />
the author of the communication <lb />
in the titled, <lb />
Jury with which title he <lb />
heads his last article an instead of <lb />
discussing his subject, proceeds to <lb />
display his knowledge of <lb />
of logic by giving vent to his vicious <lb />
disposition indignant feelings <lb />
by delivering of a personal <lb />
of criticism and sarcasm, <lb />
because some obscure little man, <lb />
presumed to give his views bis <lb />
article, in a brief and reasonable <lb />
manner. , <lb />
We are from the woods and <lb />
most of the book learning we have <lb />
which, we admit is quite limited <lb />
we had to get it by the light of pine <lb />
knots and lamps after having done <lb />
Laid days labor for the support of <lb />
an afflicted family, so you we <lb />
can't help being and little, <lb />
we have not like our friend J., <lb />
imbibed so much self-esteem as to <lb />
imagine we arc so much larger than <lb />
other people. However, we do not <lb />
oiler our as an apology <lb />
for short never ask <lb />
odds or sympathy of any man how- <lb />
ever great he may be, in his <lb />
own estimation or other peoples, not <lb />
because we know as much <lb />
as any man, but because we are <lb />
never afraid or ashamed to speak <lb />
in what we believe to be <lb />
right may say it in a <lb />
weak and illogical style. <lb />
We are aware of our littleness <lb />
feel it very sensibly, but in our <lb />
conflicts with the world and bigoted <lb />
men, we have long since learned <lb />
that it requires a very small <lb />
when properly applied to <lb />
empty a gas-bag, and very small <lb />
insignificant things sometimes up- <lb />
set and destroy the heaviest and <lb />
most powerful locomotives. <lb />
Oh, no Mr. J., were not grieved <lb />
nor insulted at your nonsense, and <lb />
think so, you are as badly <lb />
mistaken as you are estimating <lb />
yourself to be a great man and a <lb />
logician, but we do say, when any <lb />
man, lie he great or small, learned <lb />
or unlearned, young or old, says <lb />
that nine-tenths of the men who go <lb />
into the jury box have not sense <lb />
enough to comprehend the simplest <lb />
points of law, and arc not possessed <lb />
of brain sufficient to enable them to <lb />
remember a simple sentence three <lb />
inches long, and know no more <lb />
about law than a mule knows about <lb />
psychology, and calls I hem a set of <lb />
uncivilized ignoramuses, ac- <lb />
them of bribery and <lb />
he utters language at which <lb />
nine tenths of the men and women <lb />
of Pitt or any other county have <lb />
just cause to be, ought to be, and <lb />
will lie indignant, and no reasonable <lb />
or halt sane man believe any such <lb />
stuff or expects anybody else to <lb />
believe it, when a man uses <lb />
such language he tells what no <lb />
man believes to be the <lb />
A large number of the business <lb />
men of Greenville are going on <lb />
an excursion over the new rail- <lb />
road to day, for the purpose of <lb />
looking at the country and meet- <lb />
with the business men and <lb />
people along the road. They <lb />
will go as far as Weldon. We <lb />
hope to see all the people along <lb />
this road brought into a close re- <lb />
with each other. <lb />
Score one for the Salisbury <lb />
The last issue of that <lb />
paper was printed on a new <lb />
Campbell power press which has <lb />
just been purchased. The many <lb />
friends of the editor of the Her- <lb />
Mr. J. R. Whichard, here at <lb />
his old home, learn gladly that <lb />
he is meeting with such success <lb />
since going to Salisbury- His is <lb />
the first power press ever used <lb />
in the town. <lb />
The National Editorial <lb />
met in Detroit, <lb />
yesterday. There are in <lb />
attendance from North Carolina, <lb />
Messrs. W. W. of <lb />
the Lumberton ; J. B. <lb />
Sherrill, of the Concord Times <lb />
Josephus Daniels, of the <lb />
Chronicle; T. B. ridge, <lb />
of the Lexington Dispatch; Thad. <lb />
R. Manning, of the Henderson <lb />
Gobi Leaf. Mr. W. E. Christian, <lb />
of the Charlotte Democrat, was <lb />
one of the delegates appointed <lb />
from this State, but was <lb />
vented from going on account of <lb />
sickness in his family. We wish <lb />
all the brethren a pleasant trip <lb />
and are sorry Mr. Christian <lb />
could not go with them. <lb />
He may say he has not claimed to <lb />
be a logician or a great man. It is <lb />
lair to assume when a man sets <lb />
himself up as a critic that he pro- <lb />
fesses to understand the subject of <lb />
his criticism, and when be feels so <lb />
large that nearly everybody <lb />
everything looks small in bis <lb />
it is fair to assume he con- <lb />
great. <lb />
He says he has fear of b- <lb />
classed with the changed initial <lb />
mail by anybody whose opinion he <lb />
would hold in esteem. Certainly <lb />
there is much difference in <lb />
our sentiments when brought in <lb />
comparison. No reasonable, man <lb />
would ever suspicion him of holding <lb />
in esteem the opinion of any <lb />
nary man. To a man <lb />
bis imaginary greatness good- <lb />
real fool hardiness, at l <lb />
nine-tenths of tho people are too in- <lb />
significant for their opinions to be <lb />
worth anything, and we have no <lb />
doubt he thinks they have no right <lb />
to opinion at all. <lb />
He prides himself on being such <lb />
a peaceable, law abiding citizen, <lb />
if he is such, tho jury system <lb />
can't hurt him very much, as we <lb />
told in before. We have known <lb />
several men who never had any <lb />
suits court, but were in <lb />
the bar while the court was sitting <lb />
and seemed to have a good deal of <lb />
confidential business with <lb />
A great many men are <lb />
shrewd enough to their <lb />
meanness such a way as not <lb />
be caught the meshes of tho law, I <lb />
but always manage to some <lb />
less guilty man between them and <lb />
justice. J. seems to a good <lb />
deal about what goes about the <lb />
Court House, though he has cases, <lb />
perhaps if he would spend less time <lb />
the bar during court week, he <lb />
might have less to complain He <lb />
may live such a manner as to <lb />
lead his and some other <lb />
people to think him a good man, if <lb />
so, ho is a for we are told <lb />
in the scriptures that the <lb />
abundance of the heart the mouth <lb />
and surely none but an <lb />
evil heart and wicked brain could <lb />
conceive such thoughts as he has <lb />
on the jury system and my- <lb />
self, lie even borrows, misquotes <lb />
and besmirches with his slanderous <lb />
lips the saying the good old Dr. <lb />
Closs, about ideas, if we are to judge <lb />
by his writing would say if <lb />
one good bright idea was to get into <lb />
his it would burst it as quick <lb />
as dynamite. <lb />
He says he has said nothing at all <lb />
against respectable jurymen and <lb />
lawyers, then he would have us be- <lb />
that nine-tenths of are <lb />
not. respectable. We have not ac- <lb />
of saying that all juries <lb />
were picked and dishonest. lie <lb />
says he is not fool enough to make <lb />
a Statement and that he has a <lb />
little more regard for truth and <lb />
Now we believe that a <lb />
man who will write such a piece as <lb />
Jury without <lb />
cation is fool enough to say almost <lb />
anything, the man who will <lb />
write and have published such <lb />
wholesale and abuse about <lb />

these few plain <lb />
standing laws to the contrary, <lb />
whiskey is being acid in <lb />
on Sunday. Notwithstanding the <lb />
town has two police they <lb />
fail lo bring the violators before <lb />
the Mayor. We have been told <lb />
that three bar rooms are engaging <lb />
in these violations and that the <lb />
policemen are aware of it. To <lb />
these officers people look. <lb />
Instead of saying more at present <lb />
as to what may or may not done <lb />
in this matter, we will merely refer <lb />
back to some three <lb />
years ago. It was then told that <lb />
whiskey was being sold in town on <lb />
and that the officers were <lb />
aware of it. We went to a police <lb />
man personally with this matter <lb />
and be denied emphatically having <lb />

work to ferret the matter. The <lb />
result was that on the next <lb />

violation, discovered the identical <lb />
police officer to be of the guilty <lb />
parties, and the next week the <lb />
whole matter was made <lb />

is remembered by our readers. <lb />
Now it is charged again that <lb />
whiskey is sold in Greenville <lb />
on Sunday. If the policemen don't <lb />
know it they ought to know it, and <lb />
bring violators before the Court. <lb />
One thing is sure, if the <lb />
has to have the violators de- <lb />

particularly, arrested our attention. <lb />
late we have read of several ca- <lb />

the of these <lb />

them smoke cigarettes. Take a <lb />
five, feet high and stick a cigarette <lb />
in his mouth and it stretches him <lb />
out to about five feet eleven inches ; <lb />
in other words it takes only a few <lb />
packages to make a man <lb />
of him. The man who advertised <lb />
as above, with other sensible people <lb />
no doubt was convinced that <lb />
king neither makes a man of a boy <lb />

Smoking cigarettes is an injurious <lb />

an exhibition of nonsense and costs; <lb />
money and health. <lb />
